We arrived at the Watermill Theatre about fifteen minutes before the show began and immediately remembered why we love this venue so much. The remote, picturesque mill buildings, the warm welcome from staff, and the cosy, intimate atmosphere all contributed to the sense of returning somewhere special. Inside the theatre, that closeness is even more pronounced, and from our seats in the front row at the side of the stage, we had an excellent view throughout the performance.

From the moment the show started, we were completely drawn in. Set in Cornwall, the story felt both familiar and fresh, and the cast’s wonderful Cornish accents added an unexpected charm. Every performer impressed us with their talent and versatility, both musically and dramatically.

We were especially captivated by Annabelle Aquino’s portrayal of Merryn, The Little Mermaid. Her voice was stunning, and she brought warmth and sincerity to the role, making her performance unforgettable. Tom Babbage’s portrayal of Cadan was another highlight; the chemistry between him and Merryn’s character felt natural and heartfelt, making their scenes together particularly engaging. The entire cast worked beautifully as an ensemble, supporting one another with energy and skill.

This production is a brilliant adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, brilliantly directed by Elgiva Field, with a thoughtful script by Lara Barbier and evocative music and lyrics by Amie Parsons. The audience ranged in age from young children to older theatregoers, and judging by the smiles as everyone left, the show resonated with all. A truly delightful experience—highly recommended and an absolute must-see!
