Just two weeks ago, the young company of British Youth Music Theatre had only just met. In that brief time, they created a show, developed their characters, and shaped it into a strong, entertaining production.
Written by Joe Venable, who also provided the lyrics, with music composed and additional lyrics by Samuel MacDonald. Steve Elias directs the production.
Technical Difficulties is set in a senior school theatre, where a student production will count towards the cast’s end-of-year grades. From the very beginning, things start to go wrong.
The stage is fitted with a state-of-the-art safety curtain, brought to life through Sam Levy’s clever lighting design. Once activated, it becomes electrified, preventing anyone from passing through it.
When the curtain cannot be switched off, the students are separated from the backstage crew and cast, creating confusion, tension, and conflict.
As disagreements grow, sabotage is at play. Someone seems determined to stop the production from going ahead. The students must find out who is responsible, overcome the chaos, and decide whether they can still put on the show and earn the grades they deserve.
The choreography by DKFASH was performed confidently by the company and worked well alongside the singing and acting to create an enjoyable production.
The band, under musical director Josh Sood, was excellent. Together with the strong singing from the company, the music helped bring the script to life.
British Youth Music Theatre gives young people the opportunity to perform in a professional production on a professional stage. The entire company gave their all, delivering an excellent show that was warmly received and clearly enjoyed by the audience.
