“If standing up for what you believe to be right is being ‘bloody difficult’, then so be it”

Theresa May

Tim Walker’s brand-new drama sees the tumultuous political events of recent years played out in a power struggle between two determined women.

His intensely human account of the court case Mrs Miller brought against Mrs May makes for revealing and often very funny theatre, but ultimately it’s a tragedy, where there are no winners, only losers.

Waitress Review

Royal & Derngate, Northampton – until 15th January 2022

Reviewed by Ely King

4.5****

Based upon the movie written by Adrienne Shelly, Waitress is a musical following waitress Jenna’s turbulent relationship, and the journey of her pregnancy with her two best friends by her side.

For the 10th and 11th January performances of Waitress, the role of Jenna is played by  Aimée Fisher while Chelsea Halfpenny prepares to take over the role. If you can get a last-minute ticket for tonight’s show though, do it. Aimée is a force to be reckoned with – a true powerhouse.

Understudies are finally getting enough love in 2022 and it needs to be continued.

From beginning to end, this musical is an emotional rollercoaster, taking the audience through the troubles and turmoil throughout pivotal moments in the character’s lives.

Flanking Jenna’s sides are Becky and Dawn, brought to life by Sandra Martin and Evelyn Hoskins respectively, and brought to life they certainly are. Sandra’s Becky is loud, loving and boisterous, she’s that friend that will get you into trouble – but then also find a way to get you out of it. Evelyn’s Dawn starts off as a meek, awkward introvert, but blossoms into a character that truly matches her dating profile…

Ecstatically alive, fervently organised, dynamic, and witty.

Matt Jay-Willis as Dr. Pomatter is the new standard for celebrity casting. He performs the character with such passion, and manages to border that fine line of his character being anxious and jumpy but without it being weird or uncomfortable.

Whilst the main cast truly deserve all the love and accolades, there are two unsung heroes of the show, and they are Michael Starke as Old Joe and Scarlet Gabriel as Nurse Norma. Stark’s solo ‘Take It from an Old Man’ is a true tear jerker and gives Old Joe such a heart-warming turn in character. Scarlet Gabriel takes Nurse Norma to a new level. The actress’ comedic commentary and one-liners are priceless, giving much needed breaks in scenes and being an all-round fun character.

Alongside the cast, the band are always onstage and fully get involved in the storyline’s shenanigans. Including outfit changes, props, and the piano being used as a pie stand. They are the backbone of the show and were flawless from start to finish.

Not to forget Ogie. George Crawford plays Ogie’s persistently hopeless-romantic role extremely well. This happy-go-lucky character is a hard feat, but he masters it. Ogie’s carefree character is a breath of fresh air amongst the heavy themes some other characters are going through. Ogie and Dawn are a match made in heaven and watching their relationship blossom is adorable.

The pies truly take centre stage in this Musical. From end to end, the show uses actual dough and ingredients onstage to create the pies, adding a true immersion to the show that wouldn’t be created otherwise.

This musical is truly a must-see.

Whilst the show is mostly-family friendly, there are a few moments of more amorous antics alongside some innuendo-filled pie names, so please bare that in mind when taking children. It will most likely go over their heads, but is something best known about in advance.

Hairspray Review

Sunderland Empire – until Saturday 15 January 2021

4****

Sunderland Empire proves that You Can’t Stop the Beat this week.

Set in Baltimore and with the swinging 60s as the backdrop, the story follows teenager-on-a-mission Tracy Turnblad in her quest for integration and equality. After auditioning to star on local television, she becomes something of a celebrity and uses her influence to raise awareness of the segregation ethnic minorities receive on television

Katie Brace is the eager Tracy Turnblad, she shines during opening number “Good Morning Baltimore”, and sparkles as she belts her way through. Her Tracy is determined and likeable which, by the end of the show, ensures you are rooting for her. Her enthusiasm and energy allows her to command the stage with ease during “I Can Hear The Bells” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat”.

Rebecca Jayne-Davies is the perfectly clumsy Penny Pingleton, her comedic attitude making for Tracy’s ideal sidekick and Akeem Ellis-Hyman takes the part of Seaweed Stubbs, a dancer who executes Drew McOnie’s choreography to a perfect degree.

The show radiates warmth but its real power is to take the critical issue of racial segregation – John Waters’ original film is based on a real incident on a real TV show, when black and white teenagers in Baltimore stormed a live broadcast – and through comedy to demonstrate its utter absurdity. Prejudice and white superiority is embodied in Velma Von Tussle, gleefully played by Rebecca Thornhill and her equally vile daughter Amber (Jessica Croll), Brenda Edwards takes the place by storm as Motormouth Maybelle, with a voice that can do anything and go anywhere and her talented daughter Little Inez (Charlotte St Croix) who just wants to dance

Every number in Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman’s score is a big one, from ‘Good Morning Baltimore’ to the finale, ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’. Alex Bourne is a delight as Edna Turnblad, standing over the ironing board in sensible shoes and dresses that look as though she’s just run them up on her sewing machine. Bourne has a gravelly voice that can roar and he doesn’t play it like a Dame. He just plays it like a woman.

The number, ‘(You’re) Timeless to Me’, sung in duet with his much shorter ‘husband’, Wilbur, (Norman Pace) is a beautiful comic highlight.

The boys did well to thrive amid the girl power. Ross Clifton’s Link Larkin, hiding his vulnerability under an Elvis quiff. With Richard Meek upping the cheese quotient as suave-suited telly host Corny Collins.

Musical director Danny Belton and the band (Liam Dunachie, Will Gibson, Matt Yardley, Matt Parry, Brian Streeter, Aleph Agular, Craig Hanson and Richard Weeden) were never less than superb. The ensemble, including those “Nicest Kids in Town”, hit their harmonies beautifully while dancing with perkiness and style.

In Sunderland until Saturday 15 January, this show is worth every penny, so get a ticket as soon as possible for this outstanding performance.

Keala also stared in Melissa McCarthy’s directorial collaboration with a short for Wal-Mart entitled “The Box”, which first aired during the 2018 Academy Awards. The poignantly emotional short featured Keala’s soaring cover of Sia’s “Birds Set Free”, adding her unique confidence and power to an already inspiring song. That same year, she was given the opportunity to work with singer-songwriter-recording artist Todrick Hall and Jade Novah on the title track of his most important album to date; “Forbidden.” In December 2020 she was featured in the film “All My Life” alongside Harry Shum, Jr. and Jessica Rothe. The film’s soundtrack includes two songs she covered: “Love Song” and “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.”

In December 2017, Keala released her debut EP Chapter One, a compilation of contemporary R&B infused covers, including her interpretation of Bette Midler’s “The Rose.” In April 2019, Keala released her single “Feels So Good,” featured in Target’s “Do More” campaign. Keala has also recently released three other singles: “Harder,” “The Last Letter” and “Shooting At Myself.” Keala Settle effortlessly bridges the space between the Motown soul queen and modern pop star, thanks to her iconic voice and her unwavering confidence.

The Last Quiz Night On Earth – Tour & Cast

THE LAST QUIZ NIGHT ON EARTH RETURNS FOR 2022 SPRING TOUR

Immersive innovative new play sees audiences get quizzical

Box of Tricks announces today that the postponed 2020 tour of the critically-acclaimed immersive play The Last Quiz Night on Earth by Alison Carr will visit venues this Spring from 23 February – opening at The Derby Brewery Arms, Manchester – and offer audiences a very different experience of live performance. Meriel Scholfield will reprise her role as landlady Kathy and will be joined by new cast members Chris Hoyle, Matthew Khan and Tilly Sutcliffe.

An asteroid is heading towards Earth, so what you would do? Head to your local pub for a quiz of course!

It’s the final countdown. Landlady Kathy invites audiences to the last quiz night on earth with Quizmaster Rav. He’s the host with the most. But with time ticking, some unexpected guests turn up out of the blue. Bobby wants to settle old scores, and Fran wants one last shot at love. Expect the unexpected to the bitter end and plenty of drama as the show gets quizzical!

The explosive preapocalyptic comedy – which was cancelled midway through its 2020 tour due to Covid19 restrictions – will be staged in urban and rural venues across the country, including theatres, village halls, community spaces and local pubs – enabling the play to connect with audiences right at the heart of their communities. The immersive play smashes the fourth wall as audiences are plunged into the drama of the show.

Simple but innovative… a joy to experience” ★★★★ North West End

“An excellent blend of humour, pathos and quiz-mastery…a gem of a show” ★★★★ Quays Life

“A fun, innovative slice of a theatre, packed full of comedic set pieces, great one-liners and a pinch of high drama” ★★★★ Opening Night

The Last Quiz Night on Earth is produced by award-winning Manchester-based theatre company Box of Tricks who recently won critical acclaim with its productions SparkPlugNarvik and Under Three Moons and two sold-out tours of Chip Shop Chips.  It is written by Alison Carr, directed by Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder, executive producer is Max Emmerson, with design by Katie Scott.

Adam Quayle Joint Artistic Director for Box of Tricks said: “We’re delighted to be able to bring The Last Quiz Night on Earth back to venues across the UK in 2022. When we had to prematurely close the production in 2020 the subject of the play almost felt a little too real, although unfortunately we couldn’t even head to the pub! We can’t wait to see people back in their local venues having a great night out with their friends, enjoying the show and, of course, having a good ‘quiz’ at the same time!”

Playwright Alison Carr explains the background to the new play: “I wanted to combine the known and the unknown, the safe and the downright terrifying. My vision was to create something that audiences don’t just sit and watch but are part of – but not in a scary way. A quiz is something we can all do – whether we’re a general knowledge expert or the neatest so we can do the writing!

“The Last Quiz Night on Earth was so much fun to research and write. I know a lot about asteroids now, and the answers to a fair amount of quiz questions! I’m so excited that the play will be brought back to life to share with new audiences this year”

Director Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder added: “Alison is a writer of real talent, crafting plays of depth, wit and real emotional warmth and the Last Quiz Night on Earth is a truly a unique piece – a pre-apocalyptic comedy bringing people together through the power of trivia for a great night out.  Following our success touring Chip Shop Chips to the heart of communities, we’re really looking forward to revisiting some wonderful places and spaces as well as discovering new, exciting locations”

Grab a drink and join The Last Quiz Night on Earth visit www.boxoftrickstheatre.co.uk to book tickets and find out more. Let’s get quizzical, quizzical!

Feminist true crime retelling The Ballad of Maria Marten returns on tour

Feminist true crime retelling The Ballad of
Maria Marten
returns on tour this Spring
Touring from February 2022

A thrilling retelling of a real-life murder mystery, critically-acclaimed production The Ballad of Maria Marten returns to stages across the UK this spring 2022. Produced by Eastern Angles and Matthew Linley Creative Projects, Beth Flintoff’s captivating drama turns history into her-story through the exploration of love, loss, trauma, and patriarchal power.

This timely production highlights the dangers lurking behind closed doors, as the country emerges from the pandemic with domestic abuse rates higher than ever before. Flintoff covers these themes with expressive sensitivity – she is an exciting writer previously longlisted for the Bruntwood Prize and the winner of a 2021 MGCfutures Bursary for theatre-makers of the future.

It is summer 1827 and in a red barn Maria Marten awaits her lover. One year later, her body is found underneath the flooring in a grain sack, and the manhunt begins. Focusing on Maria’s life rather than her death, this acclaimed adaptation by Beth Flintoff (co-director, The Incident Room, New Diorama; writer, The Rivals, The Watermill Theatre) brings Maria’s own perspective to the forefront of the infamous ‘Red Barn Murder’.

The incredible all-female cast includes Elizabeth Crarer (Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Theatre Royal Haymarket; Macbeth and Matilda the Empress, Rabble Theatre Company; Brontë, Shared Experience) – returning as Maria Marten, Jessica Dives (Pride and Prejudice and Merry Wives of Windsor, Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre, Macbeth and Hamlet, Young Shakespeare Company), Susie Barrett (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Vaults; The Gruffalo, West End) and Sarah Goddard (Hetty Feather, West End, UK and US tour; 2066, Almeida Theatre). The production is directed by Hal Chambers, who has just finished two years directing with the RSC.

Originally commissioned by Eastern Angles, writer Beth Flintoff was inspired by her work with survivors of psychological abuse. The Ballad of Maria Marten is a clarion call for an equal and safe society. The story hopes to showcase the power and joy that can be found in female camaraderie.

Beth Flintoff comments, Eleven women died at the hands of their partners during the first three weeks of lockdown. It’s never been more important for us to consider and celebrate the lives of those that society does not manage to protect. This is an old story, about the infamous murder of a woman, but now the story is told from her point of view. I wanted to focus on who Maria was: who she loved, what she laughed about, and what she does when she’s having fun. I didn’t want her to be a victim anymore, so there is no violence onstage.

Director Hal Chambers adds, At the beginning of The Ballad of Maria Marten writer Beth Flintoff’s stage direction tells us that Maria’s best friends ‘unmurder’ her and that is exactly what we are trying to do with this production. Nearly 200 years on, we hope to let Maria and her friends finally have a voice – and what emerges, especially post-lockdown, is a play for our times. Told in vivid movement, searing music and a swirl of passion, The Ballad of Maria Marten stars a dazzling all-female ensemble

Flames lick at the stories that history has held on to, as instead of bloodied corpses, we get to see full-bodied women – vibrant and complex – with their lives of infinitely more value than their deaths (★★★★, The Guardian)

A poignantly contemporary reading of an old murder folk tale (★★★★, Morning Star)

Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.

Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, CHICAGO’s sexy, sassy score includes the show-stopping songs “Razzle Dazzle”, “Cell Block Tango”, and “All That Jazz”.  Winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy, CHICAGO is the longest running American musical in Broadway and West End history.

Since it opened in New York in 1996, CHICAGO has played in 36 countries worldwide and has been performed in English, Dutch, German, Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, French, Danish, Japanese and Korean.  Worldwide it has been seen by an estimated 33 million people, grossed over $1.7 billion and played over 32,500 performances.

CHICAGO, which is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, has a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.  The 1996 Broadway revival of CHICAGO was choreographed by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse, directed by Walter Bobbie, and produced by Barry and Fran Weissler.

In addition to these three world premieres, The Glad Game, written and performed by Phoebe Frances Brown with direction by Hampstead Theatre’s Associate Director Tessa Walker, and Kali Theatre’s Discovery Showcase will be staged in the Downstairs space on selected dates during February.  Tickets are on sale now.  Further details are available via hampsteadtheatre.com.

Roxana Silbert, Artistic Director of Hampstead Theatre, said:

“I am really excited to be welcoming these wonderful artists into our Downstairs space over the next few months.  The range, diversity and singularity of their voices is extraordinary and I can’t wait to see their stories brought to life.”

***

The world premiere of Ruby Thomas’ The Animal Kingdom, directed by Lucy Morrison, is an observation of family dynamics told with wit and compassion.

“We’re bonobos, in our family.  A hundred percent… They can be pretty aggressive actually.”

Sam is struggling.  Being a human has never been simple for him.  He just feels like a different kind of creature.  Sam’s family don’t understand.  But then they barely understand themselves.  Now, trapped in a stuffy inpatient clinic undergoing family therapy, they must find new ways to communicate with each other so that, one way or another, Sam can be released from captivity.

Ruby Thomas returns to Hampstead Theatre, following the premiere of her first full-length play Either in 2019.  In 2020, Ruby wrote a piece for the Royal Court’s Living Newspaper, and she has also had short plays performed at the Old Red Lion, Platform Southwark, the White Bear and Theatre503.

Lucy Morrison makes her Hampstead debut.  An Associate Director at the Royal Court, her credits include Scenes with girls (Royal Court), The Woods (Royal Court) and Little on the inside (Almeida Festival/Clean Break).

The Animal Kingdom has been kindly supported by the Godwin family.

***

The world premiere of Some Old Street is a devised piece of theatre by Bunny, an artistic partnership comprising of Lisa Hammond and Rachael Spence.  Bunny are joined by writer and director Kirsty Housley (Extinct, Theatre Royal Stratford) and writer Annie Siddons (How (Not) to Live in Suburbia, Soho Theatre).  Expect interviews with real people, homemade songs, plate spinning, an octopus of wealth and double act comedy antics as they ask the question – how can Lisa and Rachael stay together?

Other credits for Bunny include Still No Idea (The Royal Court/Improbable), Souled Out (Shakespeare’s Globe) and Lowdown (Channel 4).

“I know exactly what I would do.  I would never move away, that’s a false economy.Get a normy job for two years, get the down payment, buy it, it’s yours.”

Lisa and Rachael are best mates with a big friendship.  They’re happiest living side by side, in the middle of the city.  Life is tough sometimes, but they are city people, persistent, resilient chancers – and their survival depends on having each other close by.  One day, Rachael learns she’s going to have to move out of her rented flat just around the corner from Lisa and the pair set out to fix Rachael’s housing crisis.  Surely by working harder, being funnier and lying better they can get her family housed on one of the most expensive bits of land in the world?

Some Old Street is presented in association with Theatre Deli and developed with support from The Marlowe Theatre.

***
Lotus Beauty follows the intertwined lives of five multigenerational women, inviting us into Reita’s salon where clients can wax lyrical about their day’s tiny successes or have their struggles massaged, plucked or tweezed away.  But with honest truths and sharp-witted barbs high among the treatments on offer, will the power of community be enough to raise the spirits of everyone who passes through the salon doors?

“Women come, women go. We pamper them, preen them, make them beautiful. Make small talk. Never know what’s really under their skin.”

Satinder Chohan makes her Hampstead debut.  Previous credits include Zameen (Kali Theatre), Kabaddi Kabaddi Kabaddi (Pursued By A Bear/Kali Theatre), Half of Me and Made in India (Tamasha).

Artistic Director of Tamasha, Pooja Ghai directs her first production at Hampstead.  A former Associate of Theatre Royal Stratford East, previous credits include Lions and Tigers (Globe Theatre), Approaching Empty (Tamasha, Kiln Theatre, Live Theatre), RapunzelCounting Stars and The House of in Between (all Stratford East).

Lotus Beauty is presented by Hampstead Downstairs and Celia Atkin, in association with Tamasha Theatre Company.

The cast and full creative team of Lotus Beauty will be announced in due course.

11 February – 26 March 2022

New York City, 1923. Through exquisite poetry and enchanting music, an ageing Gibran narrates our tale, transporting us back two decades and across continents, to turn-of-the-century Beirut. Gibran meets Selma; their connection is instant and their love affair, fated. However, their journey to happiness is soon thrown off course, as the pair face obstacles that shake the delicate foundation of their partnership. Will their love win out or will their dream of a life together be torn apart?

Performed in-the-round, Broken Wings takes us on an unmissable musical voyage, exploring issues of gender equality, immigration, the freedom to love who we love, and what ‘home’ really means to us. Over a century later, and the themes and debates raised in Gibran’s story, remain increasingly relevant today.
