Millennials Review

The Other Palace Studio – until 7th August 2022

Are Millennials massive consumers of avocados? I must have missed that memo (I’m a bit old) but Hannah Benson’s bouncy production is borderline obsessed with the oily green fruit. Avocados feature on the logo, on the posters, there’s a trail of avocado stickers on the floor and on the wall photos all the way from The Other Palace’s foyer into the studio space, there’s a rather striking neon avocado next to the bar… Even the stage itself is a giant avocado half, with a mini trampoline where the stone should be. As far as I could make out (the sound levels are a bit overwhelming, distorting clarity at times) there are even a couple of avo references in Elliot Clay’s lyrics. What can it all mean?

I really couldn’t tell you. What I can safely say though is that Clay has produced a collection of irresistible musical earworms, some rousing, some boppy, a couple reflective, all fiendishly catchy, performed by a sensational sextet of musical theatre talents who shine like stars and sell the material for all it’s worth, and then some. It’s billed as a song cycle which is accurate as there is nothing in the way of plot. There’s not really a running theme, beyond, er, avocados: the title may be Millennials but the lyrics, as far as one can hear them, deal with most lived human experience in the modern world, not situations tied to one age group. Instead there’s a succession of quality pop songs, ranging from joyful to bombastic, anthems to bops, and a series of spectacularly good vocal performances. If the premise and extravagant, colourful tat of the visuals are a bit of a headscratcher, the show as a whole still delivers a rollicking good time.

As the cast aren’t playing traditional characters – the swift procession of songs and moods ensure that there isn’t sufficient time to establish those – the performers’ own personalities, or at least the stage facsimiles thereof, do much of the heavy lifting, and in that respect Benson’s production is on to an absolute winner. Luke Latchman is warm and sexy, Hannah Lowther tempers an innate sweetness with genuine gravitas, Rob Madge is an intriguing combination of Puckish energy and sarcastic edge. Georgina Onuorah needs to be on every casting director’s list of emerging leading ladies (she’d be a great new star for when & Juliet’s Miriam-Teak Lee finally hangs up the white headphones) and a luminous Luke Bayer proves once again why he seemingly never stops working. Hiba Elchikhe gets the lioness’s share of solos, and delivers them with glorious charm and attack. All six voices are remarkable as is the combination of confidence, attitude but sheer likability. Even if the songs weren’t so good (which they mostly are), this cast and Ehsaan Shivarani’s tiny yet mighty band would be worth the price of admission.

There’s also Andrew Exeter’s set, which transforms the space into a ruched pink foil bedecked fantasyland for young adults, complete with a ball pit (multicoloured balls of varying sizes and colours is another recurring visual motif, along with avocados), abandoned bumper car, scatter cushions, beanbags, a ball-filled bath, roving spotlights and neon. It looks rather fabulous, and the post-show Instagram possibilities are apparently endless, even though it seems more appropriate to Gen Z than the slightly older Millennials. Still, the immediacy is refreshing, as is the lack of conventional theatre seating. If it looks and feels a little over-produced, and the self consciousness kookiness of the aesthetic doesn’t always sit well with the heartfelt nature of some of the songs, the glorious cast manage to keep it consistently classy and buoyant, whether whirling through Tinovimbanashe Sibanda’s derivative but expressive choreography or belting their faces off.

Ultimately, enjoyable though it is, Millennials feels like less than the sum of it’s parts. Having said that, I can’t wait to see Elliot Clay bring his prodigious songwriting skills to a fully realised book musical, and I would strongly recommend taking the opportunity to see these six unique performers in such an intimate setting. This show will make a lot of people very happy. Oh and we NEED a cast recording please.

Boeing Boeing Review

Bernard (John Dorney) is a successful architect living in Paris who thinks he has found the secret to a happy love life. He’s a man who likes to work to schedule and he has three: one for each of his flight attendant fiancees, who all work at nearby Orly Airport for different airlines. Unfortunately, when bad luck strikes, his carefully orchestrated routine of seeing each one without the others knowing is suddenly put at risk.

Thus the scene for Marc Camoletti’s 1960 play Boeing Boeing is set. In his Director’s note in the programme for this production, Michael Cabot, Artistic Director, talks about how theatre requires audiences to suspend their disbelief, and that, as a genre, farce can stretch that suspension to its very limits. And this is the case here. Boeing Boeing is a truly classic farce. It has been revived here by the London Classic Theatre, using a translation by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans.

I found the performances of the whole cast, both individually and collectively, to be very enjoyable.

John Dorney is the polygamous Bernard, and he relies heavily on his long-suffering housekeeper Bertha (Jo Castleton) for his schedule to work and to avoid discovery. It’s delightful to watch Bernard’s rapid unravelling from smug, smooth and patronising, to manically rushing around and tearing his hair out.

Dorney’s portrayal of Bernard contrasts nicely with Paul Sandys’ repressed Robert. Arriving in town from the provinces to visit his old friend, Robert is initially shocked to hear of his friend’s lifestyle. As the hostesses’ arrivals and departures begin to unravel, Robert is hilarious as he humiliates himself with the extreme lengths he is prepared to go to protect his friend’s love life. It was the pauses and alarmed stares between them that had me chuckling the most. I was reminded here of Fawlty Towers and how Polly used to collude with Basil!

All three air hostesses gave great comic performances; the American Gloria, played by Isabel Della-Porta, brash and confident with some very firm views on what role each gender can play; the passionate and whimsical Italian Gabriella, played by Nathalie Barclay, and Gretchen the determined German, played by Jessica Dennis, all allowed us to willingly suspend our disbelief and watch to see how this situation would pan out. Things start to spin out of control; the hostesses are blithely unaware but how long until they find out and just exactly what will they do?

All of the actors above are absolutely brilliant in this fast-paced and slick production, but I think it’s Bertha, played by Jo Castleton, that steals the show. She is fabulous in this role and has spot on comic timing.

Mention must be made of the set and the costumes. Bek Palmer’s vintage costuming of the three flight attendants is a highlight, right down to the tiny details such as colour-coordinated pants to match Gretchen’s Lufthansa uniform. I was also interested to see that Bek also designed the set itself; it’s an enjoyably retro mash-up of space-age futurism; it reminded me somewhat of Space 1990!

This light and frothy French farce is a very enjoyable show to see. I will say however that the stereotypes at play here make for uncomfortable viewing at times. In his notes in the programme, Cabot does make reference to the fact that some of the attitudes in the play may be questionable and that it belongs to another time period and culture. If you can accept that and see past it, suspending your views for a while, then it’s a great piece of entertainment.

Peter Duncan to star in UK Tour of new ghost story When Darkness Falls

PETER DUNCAN & DANIEL RAINFORD TO STAR IN

UK TOUR OF

SPINE-CHILLING GHOST STORY

WHEN DARKNESS FALLS

TOUR OPENS 15 SEPTEMBER 2022

Peter Duncan will star as John Blondel and Daniel Rainford as The Speaker in the spine-chilling ghost story, WHEN DARKNESS FALLS.  Following a successful season at Park Theatre in London last summer and a short tour, there will now be a full UK Tour, opening on 15 September at the Grand Theatre, Blackpool.  The Tour currently runs through to 29 October 2022, with more dates to be announced for 2023.  Written by James Milton and Paul Morrissey, the production will be directed by Paul Morrissey.

On a stormy night on the small island of Guernsey, a young paranormal expert joins a sceptical history teacher to record the first in a series of podcasts based on the island’s incredible folklore and paranormal history.  As the expert regales his horrifying stories, the teacher learns that we all have our own truth, our own story.  Ghosts that haunt us; that bring the past, present and future together in unexpected ways; ways that can threaten to unsettle everything we think we know.

Inspired by true events, this powerful new production by James Milton and Paul Morrissey draws us into dark pasts, reveals disturbing truths and explores the power of stories.  Perhaps most importantly, the ones we tell ourselves.

Actor, film and documentary maker, former Chief Scout and 1980s Blue Peter man, Peter Duncan has a theatre, TV and film career that spans five decades.  Peter began his career on stage, joining Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre.  He became a household name when he joined Blue Peter in 1980.  After TV presenting, he began to appear in musical theatre roles such as Barnum, Bill Snibson in Me And My Girl, Charlie Chaplin in The Little Tramp and Denry Machin in The Card, for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award as Best Actor in a Musical.  More recently, he appeared as Wilbur Turnblad in the UK Tour of Hairspray

Daniel Rainford recently completed a UK tour of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful, in which he played the lead role, Tommo – a role he also played in its original run at the Nottingham Playhouse.  His other stage credits include Once Upon a Time in Nazi Occupied Tunisia at London’s Almeida Theatre.  His screen credits include this year’s The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz.  Rhys Jennings will be the understudy for both roles.

The show’s illusions are designed by John Bulleid, an Associate of the Inner Magic Circle with Silver Star, whose other theatre credits include The Ocean At The End Of The Lane (The National Theatre – associate to Jamie Harrison), Harry Potter and The Cursed Child (Palace Theatre, London – current Magic & Illusion assistant) and The Prince of Egypt (Dominion Theatre, London – associate to Chris Fisher).

Writers Paul Morrissey and James Milton have worked together for the past 15 years.  James is currently Head of Content for the new Holocaust Galleries at Imperial War Museum.  His first book, The Holocaust, was published in 2021.  Paul has written several other plays including BingoThe Wickies and Alcatraz.

WHEN DARKNESS FALLS is directed by Paul Morrissey and designed by Justin Williams, with lighting by Bethany Gupwell and sound by Daniel Higgott.

The UK Tour of WHEN DARKNESS FALLS is produced by Paul Morrissey Ltd, Christopher Wheeler and Molly Morris in association with The BARD, Jason Haigh-Ellery and Glynis Henderson Productions.

Unexplained is a haunting story-based podcast in which host and creator Richard MacLean Smith explores a different unexplained mystery each week – often to terrifying effect.  With each episode, MacLean Smith leads the listener on an atmospheric journey through the strange and eerie, taking in everything from bizarre tales of supposed time-slips, vanishings and UFOs to chilling unexplained deaths and dabblings in the occult.

Best of iTunes 2016 and one of the most popular paranormal podcasts in the world, Unexplained has been an international success reaching number 2 in the US, UK and Canadian Apple Podcast charts with over 50 million streams to date.  www.unexplainedpodcast.com

WALL STREET JOURNAL

THE KING AND I is back! Following the critically acclaimed Broadway smash-hit run, its sold-out record breaking season at the world famous London Palladium and its previous record breaking UK and International tour, comes the announcement that the multi Tony Award-winning production will now embark on a new major UK tour from January 2023.

This unmissable, majestic production will open in Canterbury and then visit Wimbledon, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wycombe, Bristol, Dartford, Bradford, Southend, Cardiff, Manchester and Glasgow. Casting will be announced later this year with further UK cities as well as a major international tour also to be announced.

The tour follows the cinema release of the live production of THE KING AND I: FROM THE LONDON PALLADIUM, which was the biggest live event in cinemas of 2018. More than 135,000 movie goers packed cinemas across the globe for the initial performance to watch THE KING AND I: FROM THE LONDON PALLADIUM – filmed on stage at the iconic London Palladium.

Acclaimed Tony Award-winning Bartlett Sher will once again direct the production and be reunited with the celebrated creative team that brought this majestic production of THE KING AND I to life at the London Palladium. The critics heaped praise on Sher’s Palladium production, the Daily Mail “left the London Palladium on a bright cloud of music”, while the The Times awarded the show “Five stars for a sumptuous King and I” declaring it “a hit”. Daily Express hailed it “London’s theatrical event of 2018” whilst The Daily Telegraph concurred proclaiming the show “looks and sounds ravishing”. Another five stars were awarded from the Sunday Express and the Financial Times called it “simply spellbinding”.

Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. With one of the finest scores ever written including: Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You and Shall We Dance, featuring a company of over 50 world-class performers, and full scale orchestra, THE KING AND I is a testament to the lavish heritage of gloriously romantic musical theatre – it is the greatest musical from the golden age of musicals.

Producer Howard Panter says: “We are delighted to take this majestic multi award-winning production of THE KING AND I on a major UK and international tour in 2023. The London Palladium season saw critical plaudits, Box Office records and standing ovations at every show – we were overwhelmed with the rapturous response. Coupled with the reaction to the Global cinema screenings of the film version – which was the biggest theatre event in cinemas of the year and number one at the Box Office. This really is musical theatre at its very best, so we are thrilled that we can now share this wondrous production with theatre lovers up and down the country next year.”

A Pretty Sh*tty Love Review

Theatr Clwyd, Yr Wyddgrug/Mold – until 23rd July 2022

Reviewed by Julie Noller

5*****

A Pretty Sh*tty Love is written by Katherine Chandler and directed by Francesca Goodridge. Based on the horrific true life story of Stacey Gwilliam who was 34 years old. In 2015 she was strangled and buried alive in a grave hastily hand dug by her fiancee. Knowing this I decided to go alone, having family and friends who have gone through similar scenarios I felt it best. I was glad I did as I was totally absorbed by the story unfolding before me.

The Mix Theatr is perfect its not a conventional theatre set up but more compact and almost cosy. The sand on the floor combined with the sounds of waves crashing and the sounds of birds crying overhead feels almost serene but absolutely works with the sweltering July weather outside. In the darkness I can see there’s perspex sheets forming the main body of the set covered with words many overwritten some hint at the drama yet to unfurl, along with the almost body shaped mound of sand in the corner.

I attended the matinee performance and I’ll be honest I was glad to walk out after what can be described as a brilliant and somewhat warped sense of entertainment into the bright sunlight to lighten my mood and clear my head. I did however drive home passing many people and found myself eyeing them in a horrendously judgemental manor. What happens behind closed doors none of us truly know.

A Pretty Sh*tty Love is a small cast of just 2, being honest no one else is needed this is an intimate story that is as graphic in words as any make up artist could achieve after all the pen truly is mightier than the sword. Danielle Bird is a bundle of energy, a breath of fresh air as Hayley. She first appears alone wearing a dress looking like a mermaid, you just feel something isn’t right is she dead? Hayley’s words run away with her, her short life has been somewhat traumatic using a long forgotten memory as a way of explaining her personality. Memories often mould us and as a parent I knew instantly she was a people-pleaser but equally craved excitement and love.

Daniel Hawksford is stone faced Carl played with stoicism surely he’s a hard character to play and yet somehow we begin the story feeling sorry for him. He is a victim too, a victim of circumstance. Watching your mother succumb to drugs and then seeing your brother follow the same path is harrowing enough. But to become immune to the failings of others and just wishing your brother dead is heartbreaking. He survives by petty stealing leading to house break-ins. He finds the gym helps gives him a sense of control in his rather mundane and sad life. Chance is the biggest impact, wondering into a café, served by Hayley. Hayley is bubbly like a little whirlwind who you find yourself warming to immediately you find yourself giggling when she does, you honestly want the best for her as she deserves it. Carl does nothing to draw you in, his guns (muscles) act like a brick wall no emotion exists in his world apart from anger that bubbles over as much as Hayley’s infectious love of life. There’s simple days, friends nights out and pure enjoyment that should be uplifting but to Carl it’s torture, driven wild with jealousy and the need to possess.

You know where everything is heading but you still need hankies and lots of deep breathing. It’s a tremendously hard subject matter but such an important story that needs continuously telling, awareness is part of the battle. I was glad to see that KIM and DASU charities were in attendance both to support where needed and to raise awareness. This story is almost like Beauty and the Beast without the fairytale ending. As a story it will stay with me for some time

The Drifters Girl Review

The Garrick Theatre, London – until February 2023

Reviewed by Emily Cliff

Rhythm and Blues is a timeless, age-defining genre of music that everyone knows and loves — enriched in history, dripping with culture, soundtracking, and defining one of the most important and notable movements of our time. The Drifters Girl tells the story of a woman and the band she managers fighting their way through the music business. They’re called The Drifters.

From the very opening number of this production, there was not a frown in the house. The joy emanating from note after note and step after step was contagious. People to the left and to the right of me were beaming ear to ear with pure enjoyment and entertainment from what was happening onstage. Littered with uplifting songs throughout, The Drifters Girl tells the story of The Drifters in a way that captivates audiences from all walks of life.

Everything from the jukebox silhouette opening positions to the silky smooth and effortlessly stylish and yet simple effective choreography was simply magnificent. While the whole cast was incredibly breathtaking in their roles notably, Tarinn Callender (Hamilton; Come From Away) was especially on form with both choreography and vocals charming the audience with his strong movements and even stronger vocals.

This review cannot go without mentioning the leading lady herself Felicia Boswell. Marking her West End debut, Boswell was impeccable and by far the best ever West End Debut I have ever seen. The way Boswell delivered the part of Faye Treadwell was so incredibly magnetic and powerful, every line she delivered, every note she sang made you yearn for the next. With a character as powerful and as driven as Faye Treadwell, you have to have an actor that can deliver the same kind of energy and portray the bold personality of the character without it being too overwhelming, and Boswell did just that and even more. She brings to life the significance and rich history of a band that has defined so many moments in pop culture and society as well as the struggles that faced women in the music industry.

The staging of this show was incredible. Combined lighting and incredible stage design made for an immersive performance with little space to work with on stage. The moving walls added depth and perspective to each scene. The strong LED lighting gave emotional context to each scene making the production even more captivating.

Overall, this production was phenomenal, effortlessly stylish and dripping with personality. The writing tells the previously unknown story of The Drifters in a subtle educational way. Dealing with some extremely heavy themes, but using them to educate through music and storytelling. Capturing the true boyband charm followed by a strong feminist-driven plotline this musical is a must-see on your next trip to the West End.
