What happens when a doctor becomes the patient…?

Unequal Productions presents Heartsink, a new bittersweet comedy written by former GP Farine Clarke, and directed by Sean Turner (Why I Stuck A Flare Up My Arse for EnglandThe Play That Goes Wrong), which will play at Riverside Studios from 21 April – 10 May.

“After years in practice seeing through a doctors’ eyes, I find myself on a crash-course as the patient, The view isn’t quite so attractive from this side, you’d be surprised to know.”

For GP Jeffrey Longford, a cancer diagnosis turns his faith in the medical fraternity inside out. Crossing the divide from confident clinician to frightened patient, challenges his professional certainties at every turn — from the way individuals are labelled by their conditions, to the ethical fault-lines surrounding assisted dying.

Written with warmth, intelligence and lived experience, Heartsink is a sharp, humane comedy that tackles ostensibly unfunny subject matter with wit and compassion. Alongside Jeffrey are a cast of richly drawn characters: Cara, an Irish patient whose hypochondria conceals a devastating truth; Suzie, a hospital receptionist whose abrasive exterior masks a brilliant philosophical mind; and Dr Roofi, a colleague forced to confront duty, loyalty and conscience.

The title, Heartsink, once used as a tag to warn doctors about a dreaded patient — becomes a quietly radical re-examination of empathy, power and humanity within modern medicine.

Farine Clarke said, “A doctor who’s a patient has insights into both sides; that’s not reassuring but terrifying and strangely, very funny. I know what it’s like to walk the wards donning scrubs and a stethoscope but learnt how it feels to lie in an institutional bed wearing an NHS nightie and paper knickers. I hear what the professionals say to me but listen for what they’re not telling me. I understand how important it is not to adopt illness behaviour, but at every turn the system emphasises the condition and strips away my identity.

Heartsink comes from this collision of perspectives. The play uses a fair dollop of gallows humour to tell layered stories which entertain, surprise and encourage societal conversations. I’m very proud that healthcare professionals appreciated this play as much as the far wider audience; valuing that Heartsink juxtaposes two worlds which are intricately linked in their purpose but widely separate in their experience.”

Sean Turner said, “Heartsink is a sharply funny, powerful play about some of the most serious parts of humanity. Importantly for me as a director is that- as with all good plays- Heartsink sparks lively conversation in the bar afterwards; the audience comes away talking.  They come away exploring vital issues in a new light.”

Heartsink is written by Farine Clarke and directed by Sean Turner. The creative team includes set designer Matteo Mastrandrea, lighting designer Chuma Lighting Design, sound designer Hattie North, designer Tom Mann, and casting director Ellie Collyer-Bristow Casting.

A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong Review

Aylesbury Waterside Theatre – until Saturday 7th February 2026

Absolutely Hilarious

From the moment this starts you know it is going to be good. The stage was set up really well and there was a lot of stage props all very well done, you didn’t notice the set changes in the play when they happened amongst the laughter.

From the first line, this was just full of slapstick comedy, one liners and you are laughing so much it hurts, I was this time really looking forward to the interval to have a breather from laughing, I ached from laughing. The audience were just thoroughly enjoying the performance, it was a grey miserable February evening, and this lightened it up the town must of heard the laughter outside of the theatre. How the performers aren’t laughing themselves I do not know they are so serious and very well acted. At first I thought “Christmas in February?” But it wouldn’t matter if you watched it in the height of summer, it was great comedy and performance whatever the time of the year.

This is a play within a play. The story line is a Director is auditioning for the play A Christmas Carol but not having much success with finding actors. They decide to go with the ones they had firstly dismissed. There was a mix of actors and all were comical, actors not remembering lines, those wanting to be director. Without out spoiling too much, one actor had a squeaky voice, he thought he was there for the The Muppets Christmas Carol, not the Dickens version. Robert played by Henry Lewis who had a superb booming voice – auditioned for every play/film there was at Christmas, he did carry out the Christmas present well and having to adorn red lycra tights must have taken some guts.

The Director of A Christmas Carol was played as Chris Bean by Daniel Fraser, he was amazing, but everyone was, you can’t pick one actor out as they were all exceptional.

A big round of applause to the creative team for this performance, the writers Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, Set design Libby Todd and Costume design Roberto Surance – but honestly to all the team along with production, it was faultless, but to be honest if anything did go amiss you would think it was part of the play.

It you want to a laugh to brighten up your evening it is definitely a must go and see, no doubt about it.

The Bodyguard The Musical Review

‘A Fun and Entertaining Night had by all’

It was a pleasure to review The Bodyguard Musical, based on the iconic 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner at the Hall for Cornwall this week.

The Bodyguard tells the story of singer, Rachel Marron, whose rise to fame has put her and her loved ones at risk from a stalker. To keep her safe, her team hires ex Secret Service agent Frank Farmer as her bodyguard and Rachel makes his life as difficult as possible. As the threat escalates, they are both drawn closer together and Frank needs to quickly unmask the dangerous assailant.

The opening number ‘Queen of the Night’ was spectacular and grabbed your attention from the off! The lights flare and the pyrotechnics dazzle as we watch Rachel produce incredible vocals on top of a tall pillar, it’s electrifying! It takes a powerhouse singer to pull off this part, and Sidonie Smith did just that, showcasing many of Whitney Houstons’ hit songs during the show.

Sasha Monique as Rachel’s sister Nicky is as good as Rachel in the vocal performance, and her rendition of ‘Saving All My Love’ was delivered tenderly. Adam Garcia was strong as Frank Farmer, and his rapport with Rachels’ son Fletcher (Mason Dyett) was particularly endearing. Mason showed amazing talent and a standout performance, in his acting, vocals and dance routines.

A stand out moment was the duet between Rachel and Nicki which was sublime. The heart-wrenching ‘Run To You’ showcasing incredible vocal performances.

The show contains a lot more songs from Whitney’s back catalogue than originally features in the film, meaning we get to hear big numbers such as ‘Greatest Love of All’, ‘One Moment in Time’ and ‘Where do Broken Hearts Go’ with the appreciation of the audience.

It is a fun and entertaining night with hit after hit, classic tunes and energetic performances. The audience are encouraged to join in with the final number which was enjoyed by all!

Crown of Blood Review

Sheffield Crucible – until Saturday 7th February 2026

Reviewed by Claire Moore

4****

Crown of Blood is a bold and powerful reimagining of Macbeth, set during the civil wars of 19th-century Yorubaland. Adapted by Oladipo Agboluaje and directed by Mojisola Kareem, this production places Shakespeare’s familiar themes of ambition, power and fate into a rich new cultural setting — and the result feels fresh.

The story centres on General Aderemi, newly praised for protecting the kingdom from invaders. When he is promoted to Field Marshall, it fulfils the first prophecy made by the oracle. When a second prophecy suggests he will become king, Aderemi and his wife Oyebisi begin a brutal and relentless pursuit of power. What follows is a steady and unsettling slide into violence, driven by ambition, fear and the desire for more.

In a largely a male-dominated world, it’s the female performances that really stand out. Kehinde Bankole is superb as Aderemi’s wife, Oyebisi — quietly powerful, she’s strong, controlled and emotionally charged. Her ability to manipulate her husband into wanting, and believing he deserves more, is very believable and it’s easy to see why Aderemi, (Deyemi Okanlawon) finds her so hard to resist.

Kayefi Osha leads the singing with a beautiful, powerful voice in the Yoruba songs that was a real highlight of the show. It instantly grounded the production in the sounds and spirit of Yorubaland, adding depth and atmosphere throughout. The simple drum beats and energetic movement worked particularly well, providing a striking contrast to the darker themes of death and murder running through the play.

More lighter moments are delivered by Jude Akuwudike as Prime Minister Opaleye, clearly irritated by the arrogant crown prince (Tope Tedela) and bringing some much-needed laughter amid the darkness.

Kevin Jenkins’ costumes are beautiful and clearly inspired by traditional dress from the region. They do a brilliant job of signalling class and status, making it easy to understand the shifting power dynamics on stage. The set itself is very simple — perhaps a little too simple at times — and there were moments where it wasn’t always clear when or where we were. Alexandra Stafford’s lighting design helps to fill in those gaps, marking changes in location and building tension throughout the play. It’s particularly effective during the many murder scenes, where the lighting sharpens the atmosphere and keeps the sense of danger close.

Crown of Blood is a thought-provoking piece of theatre that reimagines a familiar story now deeply rooted in a new cultural setting. With powerful performances, striking music and moments of both tension and humour this is a real opportunity to see and experience something different — the kind of theatre that gently nudges you out of your comfort zone and reminds you why live performance can make life feel that little bit richer and more interesting.

Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes Review

Theatre Royal Nottingham – until Saturday 7th February 2026

Reviewed by Jill Heslop

5*****

A ballet within a ballet is an intriguing idea and this delightfully mesmeric production of The Red Shoes succeeds exceptionally well. Matthew Bourne’s rendition of The Red Shoes is based on Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1948 film, which in turn was based on the classic fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. The tragic tale of a love triangle with a difference is beautifully moving with playful fun sections as well as fantastic forties costumes and lavish scenery.

Victoria Page, the main female character who wears the fateful red shoes, is played by Cordelia Braithwaite with delicacy and strength. The story traces her development from a young dancer who catches the eye of the ballet impresario Boris Lermontov (Andy Monaghan) to a rising star in the ballet world. Along the way she falls in love with the struggling composer played by Dominic North. The story explores the theme of the sacrifices made by artists trying to reach perfection in their craft.

This colourful production is being revived in a thirteen venue UK tour which was cut short due to covid in 2020. Choreographed and directed by Matthew Bourne with the cast of New Adventures dance company, the scenes move from London to Paris, to Monte Carlo and the French Riviera. The revolving curtain frames the whole ballet, cleverly functioning as a curtain between the audience and the cast when we are watching the ballet within a ballet. The scenes set in Monte Carlo are full of playfulness and extravagance complete with stripy bathing gear and large beach balls. The joyfulness and humour of these bright scenes contrasts sharply with the spare colour palette of the ballet within a ballet. Here the use of silhouettes and a moving backdrop in shades of grey and white contribute to the intensity of emotion making the red shoes stand out all the more. The dancing and acting throughout is expressive and exceptional from the whole cast. Clever use of lighting in the final scene brings the audience into the action as witnesses, creating a moving and shocking ending.

This was a real treat for an appreciative Nottingham audience on a cold winter evening!

Announcing the cast and Director/Choreographer joining DAME MAUREEN LIPMAN for the world premiere of ALLEGRA

Announcing the cast and Director/Choreographer joining

DAME MAUREEN LIPMAN  for the world premiere of ALLEGRA
a new comedy by Peter Quilter

Director and Choreographer
Three-time Olivier Award® winner
STEPHEN MEAR

Allegra tours the UK from Tuesday 12 May, 2026
prior to the WEST END

Thomas Hopkins Productions and SAMS Entertainment are today thrilled to announce the complete cast joining national treasure Dame Maureen Lipman DBE in the world premiere of Allegra, a new comedy by Tony Award and two time Olivier Award® nominated playwright Peter Quilter.

Opening at Theatre Royal Brighton in the week Dame Maureen celebrates her 80th birthday, the cast features John Middleton (Emmerdale), Elizabeth Bower (Trollied) and Bailey Patrick (London Kills).

The production reunites Maureen with Director/Choreographer Stephen Mear 28 years after they worked together on the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of Oklahoma! when Stephen assisted Choreographer Susan Stroman.

Following her acclaimed performance in Rose in the West End in 2023, Dame  Maureen now leads this joyful heartwarming comedy on her first major UK theatre tour in 20 years.

Allegra is a moving comedy with spectacular song and dance sequences, but is also a touching and emotional examination of how, sometimes, the most beautiful of minds can start to disappear.

Allegra (Maureen Lipman) is full of joy. So much of it that she cannot stop herself from bursting into song. At home, in the street, even in shops and restaurants. Sometimes the music is only a fantasy in her head. But at other times, it results in a loud and disruptive performance that causes chaos in the village where she lives. Allegra’s brother, Ronen, and her carer, Anna, must somehow control her eccentricities and avoid angry visits by the local policeman. But is this possible without destroying the great happiness that fills Allegra’s heart?

Dame Maureen Lipman DBE
At the start of a long and distinguished theatre career in theatre, Dame Maureen Lipman DBE spent three years with the National Theatre Company at The Old Vic led by Sir Laurence Olivier. Her acclaimed one-woman tribute to Joyce Grenfell, Re: Joyce, ran several times over five years in the West End. Other self-written one-woman shows include Live and Kidding (Duchess Theatre) and Up For It (Edinburgh Fringe and Purcell Room). Other theatre credits include: See How They Run (Shaftesbury Theatre): As You Like It (RSC); Outside Edge and Martin Sherman’s Messiah (Hampstead); Aunt Eller in the National Theatre’s Oklahoma!; Lost in Yonkers (Strand Theatre); Daytona (Park Theatre & Theatre Royal Haymarket); Harvey (Birmingham Rep & Theatre Royal Haymarket) and The Best Man (Playhouse Theatre). She has been nominated for seven Olivier Awards across categories commending acting in plays, musicals and comedy, winning in 1984 for See How They Run. Her film credits include: Oklahoma!, the Oscar-winning The Pianist and Educating Rita. Her extensive TV credits include playing agony aunt Jane Lucas in the groundbreaking series Agony (1979 – 81); playing Evelyn Plummer in Coronation Street since 1981 (winning seven TV awards including Best Soap Actress in the TV Choice Awards, and Celebrity Gogglebox alongside Gyles Brandreth. She was married for thirty-three years to the late writer Jack Rosenthal, appearing in three of his TV plays including the Emmy-winning The Evacuees. She was awarded a Damehood in 2021.

John Middleton (Ronen) is best known for playing Rev Ashley Thomas in ITV’s Emmerdale from 1996 to 2017. When John was given the story that Ashley would be diagnosed with Vascular Dementia, which played out over the subsequent two and a half years leading to the death of his character, Emmerdale won the Broadcast, Royal Television Society, National Television Award, BAFTA and British Soap Award for Best Soap, his story won Best Story and Best Episode and he won Best Male Dramatic Performance and Best Actor. At the Yorkshire Royal Television Society Awards, he won Best Actor and a Special Achievement award. After this he starred in a highly successful theatre tour of Strangers on a Train where he appeared as the American detective Arthur Gerard. In 2021, John played Frank in the one-man show Hull & High Water for Hull Truck Theatre. Throughout 2022 and 2023, he played Colonel Pickering in the UK Tour of My Fair Lady, directed by Bartlett Sher and he can currently be seen as resident baddie Fraser “Froggy” Black Sr. in Hollyoaks.

Elizabeth Bower (Anna) is best known for playing Anna in the TV supermarket comedy series Trollied. Her other TV appearances include Mammoth, The Secret Life of Boys, The Trouble With Maggie Cole and Miss Scarlett and the Duke.  She was a series regular on Doctors and Princess Mirror-Belle.

Bailey Patrick (PC) is best known on TV as Detective Rob Brady in all four seasons of London Kills. He was also in Bridgerton and Good Omens and played Amari in Andor. He played Vinnie alongside Danny Dyer in the recent film Marching Powder.  In the West End he played Trevor in Mischief’s Theatre’s Peter Pan Goes Wrong. Other stage roles include Hickey in The Country Girls (Chichester Festival Theatre).

Dame Maureen said: “‘To find a comedy which can turn our current face of gloom into an upturned grin of happiness, is rare. Allegra is about a woman who is relentlessly upbeat – in more ways than one. Ibsen it isn’t’’

Peter Quilter said: “Maureen is one of the great theatrical treasures of this country, and to have her bring Allegra to life is a joy and an honour.”

Producer Thomas Hopkins said: “Working again with Maureen after the remarkable West End success of Rose is an absolute privilege. Allegra is sure to be one of UK theatre’s highlights of 2026.”

Playwright Peter Quilter will have the rare distinction of three plays running across the UK in 2026: Allegra; the 20th anniversary tour of Glorious! starring Wendi Peters and Matthew James Morrison; and Jinkx Monsoon will star as Judy Garland in a revival of End of the Rainbow at Soho Theatre in Walthamstow.

Richmond Theatre brings you 2:22 A Ghost Story written by Danny Robins, known for his BBC hit podcasts Uncanny and The Battersea Poltergeist

It tells the story of a couple Sam (James Bye) and Jenny (Shvorne Marks) who have recently had a baby and moved into a new house, that they have been slowly renovating to make it their forever home! When Sam works away leaving Jenny alone in the house, strange things begin to happen with Jenny hearing unusual noises that seem to occur every night at the same time of 2:22. She’s convinced that their house is haunted and they may be in danger, especially her daughter as the noises, seem to be coming from her bedroom. Eager to explain things to her husband Sam on his return from his business trip. She’s worried that he won’t take her seriously because in his eyes there is always an explanation to everything in this world and things do not just happen.

When her husband returns home late with friends for dinner who have already arrived- Lauren (Natalie Casey) an old friend from school and her new boyfriend Ben (Grant Kilburn). Jenny does not have the time to explain the whole situation. So instead it gets discussed amongst them all, alongside old stories that emerge and secrets that hold hurt and betrayal within the room leading to some heated conversations as well as some strong beliefs regarding the unknown and Sam being a non-believer thinking that they are all bonkers and need to get a grip.

It’s then decided that Jenny who is frustrated with her Husband Sam wants Lauren and Ben to stay the evening for the countdown to 2:22am so she can prove him wrong. As the night proceeds strange events begin to happen that get their adrenaline pumping. Will they discover the truth and is everything not as it seems or is jenny really just losing her mind!

This production is a fast-paced drama that will have you locked in and wondering with suspicion from all angles. Alongside some jump scare moments leaving the audience nervous, buzzing followed by laughter all at the same time, definitely keeping you on the edge of your seat.

The lighting and sound were just exceptional making this production an amazing watch and one not to miss!

My Brother’s A Genius Review

Sheffield Lyceum – until Saturday 14th February 2026

Reviewed by Claire Moore

4****

My Brother’s a Genius follows twins Daisy and Luke growing up on a high-rise estate, as they work their way through life amid a jumble of ambition, expectation and self-doubt. Both are labelled from an early age — Daisy as the “idiot” and Luke as the “genius” — and those words begin to shape not just how the world sees them, but how they see themselves. Bound by a close relationship and a shared dream of flying, the question is whether that bond will lift them both up, or eventually pull them apart.

Blending poetry, grime music and movement, the production explores neurodivergence in a way that feels thoughtful and genuine. That care isn’t just contained within the play itself. From the moment you arrive, there’s a clear effort to make everyone feel comfortable — with a relaxation area available to use, small fidget toys offered, and reassurance before the show begins that audience members are free to move around, leave, or do whatever helps them feel at ease. There’s a real understanding of the neurodivergent world here, and a sense that everyone is truly welcome. The cosy, intimate feel of the Playhouse only adds to that warmth.

Written by Debris Stevenson and created through conversations with hundreds of young people across the UK, this powerful play is brought to life by Jess Senanayake as Daisy and Tyrese Walters as Luke. Together, they give the story real energy and heart. Playful and energetic in places (Luke’s air-walk pull-ups certainly surprised and impressed the younger members of the audience) There is also something tender beneath the surface — a story about being seen, misunderstood, and trying to find your place in a world that’s very quick to label.

The story begins with the news that, for the first time, the twins are to be separated as they move on to big school. The uncertainty and change this brings are portrayed with real emotion by both performers. Daisy struggles to be understood, and while life for Luke may initially appear more straightforward and successful from the outside, it soon becomes clear that it can also be deeply lonely. As the play unfolds, we see that for both characters — as they grow up — falling, failing and flying are all part of life, whatever label society tries to give you.

The play truly comes alive through the music, delivered brilliantly by both actors, adding rhythm, emotion and real energy to the storytelling.

It’s a powerful piece that helps people like me better understand the neurodivergent world, while also ensuring those within it feel genuinely seen. At a time when so much feels rushed and overwhelming, this kind of storytelling feels important and timely while reminding us all that sometimes, we just need to hide in a toilet — and that’s okay. Jess Senanayake and Tyrese Walters both deliver standout performances, and I’ll certainly be looking out for them in the future.
