BECOMING TOSCA REVIEW

ARCOLA THEATRE – UNTIL 6th SEPTEMBER 2025

REVIEWED BY JACKIE THORNTON

5*****

Everyone has a backstory, everyone has a prologue. Here the clever minds of Prologue Opera have opened up the world of Puccini’s renowned work Tosca, transplanting it from 1800 Rome to an unspecified South American barrio in the mid-20th Century. The key characters remain but over two acts we witness the tragedy of their lives as they rise from poverty city into a tempestuous society where a military junta battles the burgeoning resistance.

Director Rebecca Marine, making her company debut, and musical director Berrak Dyer bring Christopher Cowell’s translation to life with oodles of warmth, humour and relatability in act one, with the second half teasing out our dread and fear for lovers Cavaradossi and Tosca. Anthony Flaum’s rendering of the tragic painter Cavaradossi has our sympathy in bucket loads and his silky, rich tones are a delight. Diva opera singer Tosca is played with an incredible range of emotions by Anna Sideris and her agile soprano voice pairs sublimely with Flaum.

Brendan Collins makes a wonderful villain as a corrupt Secretariat of State Intelligence Scarpia with his thundering bass voice and snappy comic timing. Jonathan Cooke as Spoletta perfectly conveys the frustration of feeling ignored by the world in Shadowman while at only 16, Harry Gently cuts an impressive Angelotti with Internationale as he naively tries to stir up support for a revolution.

Staging is minimal with suggestions of a church, a government office or an interrogation room that allow the performers to command the space. Tosca’s costuming is a particular highlight, capturing the 1940s style while also hinting at a colour palette from Cavaradossi’s paintings. The five singers are accompanied by just one pianist and a clarinettist but there’s certainly nothing lacking in their skilled performances of Frank Moon’s score.

This company is all about challenging our preconceptions of opera and as someone relatively new to appreciating this art form, it was mesmerizing. No opera glasses required, the intimate space of the Arcola means the cast are literally eyeballing you with their full emotion. Not to be missed.

“My spurt of saliva is my spray of diamonds”

With their mistress away, two maids act out their darkest fantasies as they obsessively role-play her murder, until performance and reality begin to blur.

This bold new translation of The Maids is a compelling, timely parable of modern identity and the destructive desire to both emulate and annihilate those we idolize.

Kip Williams follows his international hit production of The Picture of Dorian Gray with this wild reimagining of Jean Genet’s classic play.

French playwright, poet and novelist Jean Genet’s other plays include The Balcony, The Blacks, The Screens, Deathwatch and Splendid’s. His books include Our Lady of the Flowers, Miracle of the Rose, The Thief’s Journal, Querelle of Brest and Funeral Rites.

Kip Williams is a multi-award-winning director of theatre, opera and film. He is the former Artistic Director and Co-CEO of Sydney Theatre Company (STC), positions he held from 2016-2024. Williams’ most recent work is his adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (Theatre Royal Haymarket, Music Box Theatre), with Sarah Snook. Williams’ adaptation of Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, a companion cinetheatre production to Dorian Gray, played the Adelaide Festival and Perth Festival in 2023. Next year, Williams will direct his adaptation of Dracula at the Noël Coward Theatre, with Cynthia Erivo playing all 23 roles.

He has directed over 20 productions for Sydney Theatre Company, including his multi-award winning production of Suddenly Last Summer, his reinterpretations of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Julius Caesar and Romeo and Juliet, the celebrated 7 hour epic The Harp in the South by Kate Mulvany, his gender inclusive production of Lord of the Flies with Mia Wasikowska, and his ongoing collaborations with actor Hugo Weaving in Brecht’s The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and Tennessee Williams’ Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. Williams was a Board Director of National Institute of Dramatic Art from 2016 to 2023.

Yerin Ha’s theatre credits include Lord of the Flies (Sydney Theatre Company). Her television credits include Dune: Prophecy, Halo and will join the upcoming fourth series of Bridgerton as the series lead Sophie Baek; and for film,Sissy.

Further casting to be announced.

The musical, based on Markus Zusak’s 16 million-copy global best-seller, has a book by award-winning best-selling author Jodi Picoult (My Sister’s Keeper & Small Great Things) and Timothy Allen McDonald (adaptor of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka James and the Giant Peach) with music and lyrics by Kate Anderson and Elyssa Samsel (Apple TV’s Central Park Olaf’s Frozen Adventure).

On this London concert performance writers Jodi Picoult & Timothy Allen McDonaldsaid: “We couldn’t be prouder to present this new, gorgeous incarnation of THE BOOK THIEF in London. As Americans, we are very much aware of how quickly fascism can take hold of a country — this show is the right story, at exactly the right time. To have Melanie La Barrie leading the company as Death, our narrator, is a dream — her immense talent and experience has given us so many colours we writers can paint with.”

Composers Kate Anderson and Elyssa Samsel said: “We are so excited to bring this score back to life on stage, with some new songs that have grown and changed with the show’s evolution. To have our music in the talented and capable hands of an actor like Mel LaBarrie is a dream come true!

Producers Emily Lunnon and Ramin Sabi said: “It’s our great pleasure to bring this beautiful show to London for the first time. The unique musical language created by the writing team has brought Markus’ timeless and timely story to life in that very special way that only theatre can. We couldn’t be more excited for Tom Jackson Greaves’ genius staging to propel the show through its next steps, to a new audience and beyond.

Director and choreographer Tom Jackson Greaves said: “I am thrilled to be leading this incredible musical into its next chapter, alongside our brilliant writers, creative team, cast and exceptional storyteller, Melanie La Barrie. It’s a story that needs to be heard now more than ever and I cannot wait for a London audience to experience it for the very first time.”

The musical had its world premiere at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton in 2022, with subsequent productions at Coventry Belgrade Theatre & Leicester Curve in 2023, with original direction by Lotte Wakeham.

Red. White. Black. These are the colours by which Death remembers. And the colours of a girl who dared to write her story in the ruins.

THE BOOK THIEF is told by Death – they are haunted by humans, cataloguing the colour of the sky at the precise moment they carry each soul away. Tonight’s story belongs to Liesel Meminger, twelve years old and unafraid to take what matters: the red of a book found in the snow, the black of a novel rescued from a bonfire, the white of empty pages she will fill with her own defiant words. Down in a cellar painted in shadows, she reads to Max, a Jewish fist-fighter hidden by her foster family, and together they imagine a world lit by language. Above, Hans plays the accordion with fingers stained by tobacco and time, Rosa hurls curses wrapped in warmth, and Rudy runs beside Liesel, chasing a kiss that history won’t allow.

THE BOOK THIEF concert performance will be directed and choreographed by Tom Jackson Greaves (The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry; Whistle Down The Wind) after original direction by Lotte Wakeham (The Book Thief, Little Shop Of Horrors), with libretto by Jodi Picoult (BreatheBetween The Lines) & Timothy Allen McDonald (Roald Dahl’s James & The Giant Peach and Willy Wonka), music and lyrics by Elyssa Samsel & Kate Anderson (Olaf’s Frozen Adventure; Central Park), orchestrations & musical supervision by Matthew Malone (Spend, Spend, Spend; Brassed Off), set & costume Design by Good Teeth (Piaf; Aladdin), lighting design by Nic Farman (Allegiance, The Diary of a CEO Live), sound design by Sound Quiet Time (Stanger Things: The First Shadow), casting by Abby Galvin (The Leftbehinds; The Lonely Londoners) and  musical direction by Natalie Pound (This Is My Family; Next to Normal).

THE BOOK THIEF is produced by Deus Ex Machina Productions (RIDE; Alice in Wonderland; Four Play), Writers’ Cage and Andrew Paradis in association with Bethany Cooper Productions.

GO LIVE THEATRE ANNOUNCES NEW PATRONS

GO LIVE THEATRE ANNOUNCES NEW PATRONS

Go Live Theatre today announce that Paapa EssieduJulie HesmondhalghJames GrahamBeverley KnightAdrian LesterRicardo P LloydRob MadgeSuzie MillerGracie McGonigalGeorgina OnuorahElaine PaigeJonathan PryceJonathan SayerMark StrongMeera SyalSam West and Roy Williams have joined the charity as Patrons to support the company’s core initiatives and act as industry ambassadors.

Chief Executive of Go Live Theatre Sita McIntosh said today, “It is a huge honour to add the names and faces of such prestigious talent to our organisation. Every single patron believes as passionately as we do that access to live theatre for our children and young people should not be seen as a privilege but a prerogative. The benefits are numerous, profound and can quite literally be life-changing but also as an industry, theatre has an obligation to cultivate the audiences of tomorrow and where better to start than with our young people.”

Beverley Knight: “I remember my first experience of theatre as a child. It never left me. It shaped the performer I am today, because I saw my dream right in front of me. Visualisation of your aspirations is essential, and I want to help young people see a path to their stage ambitions; I’m proud to come onboard as a patron of Go Live.”

Mark Strong: “Access to theatre is essential – the benefit of live performance and the shared experience has time and again proven to not just culturally enrich young people’s lives, but to also support mental health and help develop emotional intelligence. I feel strongly that every child and young person should have the opportunity to access theatre, and it’s this that sits at the very core of what Go Live Theatre do – I’m proud to work with them.”

Meera Syal: “I didn’t know what theatre was until I attended a local pantomime at the age of 6, and by the end of the show, my world and how I saw the world changed forever. The joys of live theatre and the potential it unlocks in young minds should be available to everyone and I am thrilled to be part of that journey with Go Live.”

James Graham: “Inspiring and helping young people to engage with the arts is just about the most important activity anyone in our industry can be championing right now – especially given the collapse of creativity in schools. I’m so grateful for the work we’ll be doing with Go Live on PUNCH in the West End, and to supporting them beyond.”

Since its inception as Mousetrap Theatre Projects in 1997, Go Live Theatre, has enabled more than 250,000 children and young people to experience the joy of live theatre, with that number growing exponentially. The charity work with those from disadvantaged and/or vulnerable backgrounds for whom a trip to the theatre is out of reach because of economic or physical reasons or quite simply, relevance. Working on a wide variety of programmes with producers and venues, Go Live Theatre exist to change that.

One of the cornerstones of the charity’s work is their subsidised all-Education Matinees for state schools and pupil referral units, especially those with a high percentage of pupils on free school meals. In some instances, over 80% of the students that attend, set foot inside a theatre for the first time. To enable greater access to these performances, Go Live Theatre launched Play It Forward to raise vital funds to make these performances entirely free – for every £10 donated a child goes free.

In addition to the all-Education matinees, through their Family First Nights programme they extend that experience to families from low-income backgrounds enabling parents and guardians to treat their children to a night out at the theatre which for many is a pipe-dream. By enabling parents and guardians to access theatre, it allows them also to experience the transformative power of live performance, and therefore to bring in further into their children’s lives.

Inclusive Family Days are their programmes aimed at children and young people who are blind or visually impaired and D/deaf. They prepare them with pre-show touch tours of the set and workshops to explain and enhance everything from the music in the show, to the characters and plot. Then they experience performances that are audio described, captioned or BSL interpreted so their disability is not a barrier to enjoying theatre.

Go Live Theatre pioneered Relaxed Performances for young people with sensory, learning and physical disabilities who find mainstream shows too overwhelming. These are now practically standard up and down the country but were a Mousetrap Theatre Projects first.

These are some of the many initiatives spearheaded by the charity to increase access to theatre. The charity are committed to cultivating the next generation of audiences or creative talent by igniting a passion for theatre from an early age through trips to the theatres, impactful programmes and inspiring workshops.

WISE CHILDREN TO BECOME EMMA RICE COMPANY – ANNOUNCES A NEW 3 YEAR PARTNERSHIP, THE DIRECTOR’S CUT, WITH THEATRE ROYAL BATH AND FORTHCOMING SEASON OF WORK

WISE CHILDREN TO BECOME EMMA RICE COMPANY

ANNOUNCES A NEW 3 YEAR PARTNERSHIP,

THE DIRECTOR’S CUT, WITH THEATRE ROYAL BATH

AND FORTHCOMING SEASON OF WORK

Wise Children becomes Emma Rice Company. Based in the South-West, the company continues its commitment to create ground-breaking work with exceptional artists, global touring, sitting alongside programme at their home base The Lucky Chance, and a comprehensive education and outreach programme.

Emma Rice said today, “The only certain thing in life is change, and change is what is happening! It is with a heady mix of pride and excitement that we are announcing our new company name, the Emma Rice Company.

“We haven’t taken this decision lightly as we’ve truly loved being Wise Children! I carry the book in my heart, and its spirit will always be at the centre of the company’s ethos and story. However, the need for change has become compelling and we are nothing if not brave and smart.

“We’ve been forced to admit that the name we love so much is not helping us communicate the kind of work we make. We cannot keep explaining to partners near and far that we are not a children’s company! We also have exciting plans to celebrate and remount some of my past work, from my glorious time at Kneehigh, and less glorious time at Shakespeare’s Globe. It’s time to join the dots, tell the big story and bring all these wonderful chapters together under the simple and authentic banner: Emma Rice Company. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Emma Rice Company and Theatre Royal Bath announce a three-year partnership, The Director’s Cut, which will see the two companies working together to revive some of Rice’s most iconic and beloved productions. The extended season will kick off with Malory Towers in May 2026, followed by Tristan & Yseult in September 2026. Further programming for future years will be announced in due course.

Danny Moar, Director, Theatre Royal Bath said, “It is an enormous privilege for Theatre Royal Bath and its audiences to collaborate with the Emma Rice Company in this way. We look forward to two great productions opening with us in 2026 with more to come in the years ahead.”

The Director’s Cut will also tour the UK, with Emma Rice Company’s signature ‘slow tour’ network of partners collaborating to bring these works to audiences across the UK. Slow touring is the name for a slower, kinder way of working that the company has been exploring since the end of the pandemic and, alongside original partners York Theatre Royal and HOME Manchester, the network now includes Belgrade Theatre, Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse, The Royal Lyceum Edinburgh, Nottingham Playhouse and Theatre Royal Plymouth.

After opening at Theatre Royal Bath, Malory Towers will embark on a 10-venue UK tour. The production has been supported by Incentivising Touring: Repayable Grants for Theatre and Dance, a pilot scheme developed by Arts Council England to support UK regional touring. Malory Towers was amongst the first to receive a share of over £2 million as part of the first round of the scheme.

Also announced today, is the company’s brand-new production – an adaptation of Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales, adapted and directed by Rice, which runs at The Lucky Chance from 25 November continuing the company’s tradition of staging family theatre at their home in Frome at Christmas.

In addition, continuing the company’s commitment to international touring, their recent adaptation of Hitchcock’s North by Northwest will open at The Old Globe in San Diego next July, before embarking on a US tour.

Nostalgic, naughty, and perfect for now, Malory Towers is the original ‘Girl Power’ story. This is a show for girls, boys and all grown-up children who still dream of midnight feasts and Cornish clifftops.

It would be strange, would it not, if, in a city of seven million people, one man were never mistaken for another…

But that is exactly what happens to Roger Thornhill, reluctant hero of North by Northwest, when a mistimed phone call to his mother lands him smack bang in the middle of a Cold War conspiracy. Now he’s on the run, dodging spies, airplanes and a femme fatale who might not be all she seems.

Emma Rice takes on film legend Alfred Hitchcock in this riotously funny reworking that turns the original thriller on its head. With just six shape-shifting performers, a fabulous ‘50s soundtrack and a LOT of hats, this dazzling production plays with the heart, mind and soul. Join us for a night of glamour, romance, jeopardy and a liberal sprinkling of tender truths.

Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell Review

“The Midnight Bell” – Matthew Bourne’s Bittersweet Tribute to 1930s London

Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell is a dark, tender and masterfully crafted dance-theatre work that delves deep into the emotional undercurrents of ordinary people navigating life, love and loneliness in 1930s London. Returning to theatres as part of New Adventures’ 2025 national tour, it plays at Theatre Royal Nottingham from 2 to 6 September — and it is not to be missed.

The production draws its inspiration from the novels of English author Patrick Hamilton, best known for the plays Gaslight and Rope, but whose lesser-known fiction paints a raw, sometimes painfully honest picture of working-class life between the wars. Hamilton wrote about the working men and women, observing them at a local London Pub.

Set in a smoky pub in Soho, where a lonely-hearts club of regulars gathers each night, the piece presents six interconnected storylines. These tales explore longing, betrayal, secret passions, and fleeting hope with emotional depth rarely found in non-verbal performance. The pub becomes a microcosm of a broader society, where people’s public facades mask private struggles.

Bourne was drawn to Hamilton’s world for its emotional realism and complex characters. In contrast to the glamour of 1930s high society seen in works by Hamilton’s contemporary Noël Coward, these are stories from the street-level — bartenders, typists, spinsters, troubled war veterans, and those searching for connection in dimly lit corners of the city. The storytelling here is subtle, evocative, and powerfully human.

A key strength of The Midnight Bell lies in the artistry of its ensemble, made up of some of New Adventures’ most experienced and versatile performers. For nearly 30 years these dancers have between them performed leading roles to critical acclaim in every production in Matthew Bourne’s repertoire, in the UK and internationally. Their ability to inhabit richly detailed characters through movement and expression is central to the work’s success. No dialogue is needed — every gesture, glance, and stumble tells its own story.

This evening, I watched the characters Bob, a waiter (Dominic North) Jenny Maple, a young prostitute (Ashley Shaw) Miss Roach, a lonely spinster (Michela Meazza) Ernest Ralph Gorse, a cad (Glenn Graham, who gets a special mention as I was sat next to his very proud Mum and Auntie!) Ella, a barmaid (Bryony Pennington) Mr Eccles, a regular customer (Reece Causton) George Harvey Bone, a romantic with schizophrenia (Danny Reubens) Netta Longdon, an out of work actress (Cordelia Braithwaite) Frank, a new customer (Andy Monaghan) Albert, a West End chorus boy (Liam Mower).

Matthew Bourne said:

“This is, without doubt, the finest company of quintessential New Adventures actor/dancers ever assembled for a single production!”

Bourne is joined once again by his award-winning creative team: Terry Davies provides an original score that avoids pastiche in favour of a more contemporary, emotionally charged soundscape; Lez Brotherston’s set, and costumes evoke the period with grimy beauty; Paule Constable’s lighting and Paul Groothuis’s sound design complete the immersive world.

Importantly, the themes explored — isolation, desire, heartbreak, and the need for human connection — remain as relevant today as they were when Hamilton wrote his novels. Originally developed in the wake of the pandemic, The Midnight Bell resonates deeply with modern audiences still navigating the emotional aftermath of social separation.

More than a dance piece, this is a fully realised work of theatre that blends movement, character, and atmosphere to stunning effect. The Midnight Bell is not only one of Bourne’s most emotionally mature works — it’s a quietly powerful portrait of ordinary lives, and connection, beautifully told.

FIVE-TIME EMMY AWARD WINNER WAYNE BRADY TO MAKE WEST END DEBUT IN A NEW MUSICAL OF TO SIR, WITH LOVE

FIVE-TIME EMMY AWARD WINNER

WAYNE BRADY

TO MAKE WEST END DEBUT

IN A NEW MUSICAL OF

TO SIR, WITH LOVE

FOR TWO PERFORMANCES ONLY

AT THE GILLIAN LYNNE THEATRE

ON MONDAY 24 NOVEMBER 2025

Producers Kris Lythgoe and Darren Bell are proud to announce that five-time Emmy Award winner and multiple Grammy nominee, Wayne Brady, will star alongside Lulu in two concert performances of TO SIR, WITH LOVE – A New Musical at the Gillian Lynne Theatre on Monday, 24 November 2025.

Celebrated American performer, Wayne Brady, makes his West End debut as Rick Braithwaite, the role originated in film by the legendary Sidney Poitier. On Broadway, he’s appeared as The Wiz in The Wiz, Billy Flynn in Chicago, and Lola in Kinky Boots and most recently this year returned to Broadway as Harold Ziegler in Moulin Rouge! His other theatre credits include Aaron Burr in Hamilton (Chicago), Collins in Rent (Hollywood Bowl, L.A.), Fred in Kiss Me, Kate (L.A.) and Charlie in Merrily WRoll Along (L.A.). His television credits include being a regular on Whose Line is it Anyway? a recurring role in How I Met Your Mother, Black Lightning, The Good Fight and American Gigolo. He has also competed on Dancing With the Stars and won the second season of The Masked Singer.

This newly reimagined stage adaptation of E.R. Braithwaite’s powerful memoir features music and lyrics by John Farrar and Kara DioGuardi, with direction by acclaimed director Sheldon Epps. In a full-circle moment, British music icon, actress and Grammy nominee Lulu joins the cast, returning to the story that launched her global career.

To Sir With Love is an autobiographical story that is every bit as relevant then, as it is today. Rick Braithwaite is more than just a Cambridge-educated engineer and a former RAF fighter pilot; he’s a man battling societal prejudices at every turn. Refusing to bow to adversity, he engages his students not as troublesome youths but as emerging adults who must soon navigate a world where they’ll stand or fall on their own merits. Through a balance of grit and grace, he aims to prepare them for more than just exams; he prepares them for life.

The story explores race, class, resilience, and the power of respect. The concert will feature an original score by Farrar and DioGuardi, alongside the legendary title song “To Sir, with Love” by Mark London and Don Black. Casting by Debbie OBrien.

To Sir, With Love has musical arrangements by Eve Nelson, musical supervision and orchestration by Joseph Joubert, dramaturgy by Shereen Jasmin Phillips and choreography by Edgar Godineaux.

Lythgoe Productions and Darren Bell produces, with Alex Day, Willette and Manny Klausner, Jonathan and Jennifer Yaek and Rebecca Bahling-Lythgoe.

To Sir, With Love has been developed through the Ogunquit Playhouse New Works Program.
