The UK premiere of Falsettos, the double Tony Award winner musical, will open at The Other Palace, London from 30 August to 23 November.
Today’s press briefing and vocal showcase followed the news that Matt Cardle, currently appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar and due to feature in the show, had withdrawn from performing. Tara Overfield-Wilkinson, the production’s Director and Choreographer, explained that it became apparent Matt’s heavy schedule would not be workable once the complexity of the harmonies became clear. However, the team are very excited to welcome Joel Montague (Mendel) to step into the role, and his vocal talent did not disappoint in today’s performance.
Originally a two and three act musical, this production weaves them into a single performance, based on the core message that: ‘Love can tell a million stories’. The show follows picture portraits of the characters with the message at its heart that it does not matter what balance of the sexes make up a family as long as it has love as its essence.
Originally premiering on Broadway in 1992, written by Finn and Lapine under the cloud of the AIDS epidemic, it takes ‘a hilarious and poignant look at a modern family’ of Marvin (Daniel Boys), Trina his wife (Laura Pitt-Pulford), his lover Whizzer (Oliver Savile), his son Jason (James Williams), their psychiatrist Mandel and their lesbian neighbours (Natasha J Barnes, Gemma Knight-Jones).
The main characters were present to sing highlights from the show and really demonstrate a mastering and beautiful synchronisation of the harmonies.
