The Olivier theatre to be transformed for live performances in-the-round for socially distanced audiences from October

THE OLIVIER THEATRE TO BE TRANSFORMED FOR LIVE PERFORMANCES IN-THE-ROUND FOR SOCIALLY DISTANCED AUDIENCES FROM OCTOBER

The Olivier theatre is to be significantly remodelled in order to stage a season of performances in-the-round, which will achieve an audience capacity of almost 500 while maintaining social distancing for audiences.

The National Theatre will reopen to audiences on the 21 October, for the first time since closing in March, with DEATH OF ENGLAND: DELROY, a new play written by Clint Dyer and Roy Williams, directed by Dyer and performed by Giles Terera. The production is the first in a season of productions to be staged in the transformed Olivier theatre. Tickets will go on sale to the public from 2 October with over 200 tickets available at £20 for every performance.

Death of England: Delroy follows on from Death of England that was performed by Rafe Spall and closed just before lockdown. This new work explores a Black working-class man searching for truth and confronting his relationship with Great Britain. Set and costume designers are Sadeysa Greenaway-Bailey and ULTZ, with lighting design by Jackie Shemesh, sound design by Pete Malkin and Benjamin Grant.

In a season when theatres across the country have been forced to postpone their pantomimes by Coronavirus, for one year only, pantomime is coming to the National Theatre. The second production the NT will stage as part of the Olivier in-the-round season will be DICK WHITTINGTON, originally commissioned by the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, which will celebrate and honour panto’s place at the heart of British theatre.

Jude Christian and Cariad Lloyd’s hilarious and heartfelt version of the famous story was first staged at Lyric Hammersmith in 2018. Freshly updated for 2020, Ned Bennett directs this exciting new production which promises fun for everyone and will open on the South Bank in December.

This wild and inventive production explores what it is like to come from a small town and arrive in a big city today, exploring the ideas of community and togetherness which feel even more prescient in 2020. Making the most of the newly transformed Olivier theatre with set and costume designs by Georgia Lowe, and lighting designed by Jessica Hung Han Yun. Denzel Westley-Sanderson is Associate Director.

Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre said: ‘We’re both delighted and relieved to be reopening the National Theatre with the Olivier in-the-round season, which will allow us to present live work to as many people as possible while social distancing remains in place. It is dynamically appropriate to begin the season with DEATH OF ENGLAND: DELROYan extraordinarily important and timely piece of work by the hugely talented Clint Dyer and Roy Williams, and we are also proud and privileged to be presenting DICK WHITTINGTON this Christmas, helmed by the inspirational Jude Christian, Cariad Lloyd and Ned Bennett. Pantomime is an essential part of the living fabric of our nation, and it is devastating that so many theatres across the country have had no choice but to postpone their pantos this year because of the unprecedented financial impact of Coronavirus. We’ll do all we can to keep the flame alive: brilliant theatre artists will serve up a slice of joy to families on the South Bank, and we’ll be asking everyone to support their local theatres by booking ahead for their 2021 pantomimes. Of course, we hope that it will be possible for theatres to perform safely to fuller audiences long before then.’

Speaking about Dick WhittingtonJude Christian and Cariad Lloyd said: “In 2018 we set out to celebrate the heart of the Dick Whittington story – that London has always been, and will always be, enriched by the brilliant brains and invigorating spirit of those who come from all over the world and call it home. That’s a story we want to tell now more than ever, and in quintessentially British fashion: with irreverent jokes, talking animals, awesome songs, and wholesale destructive silliness.”

Ned Bennett continued: “We are inordinately excited to be talking about a show, never mind having the privilege of being able to stage one right now. We are facing such challenging times, as artists and as an industry, so we feel so lucky to have the NT able to provide this opportunity. We cannot wait to bring audiences (safely) into the Olivier and allow them to remember the joy of theatre for a night.”

Following UK Government guidelines, social distancing measures have been put in place for those attending performances at the NT. These include staggered arrival times, paperless tickets, pre-ordered drinks, enhanced cleaning, and sanitisation stations throughout the theatre. Tickets are available to be purchased as single tickets, as pairs or in threes or fours for audiences to attend with others from their social bubbles. Face coverings will be required at all times, aside from when audience members are eating or drinking. Full information on the safety measures for audiences can be found here.

Further information, including performance dates for DICK WHITTINGTON will be released at a later date. Tickets will go on sale in October.

CAR PARK PANTO THE WORLD’S FIRST DRIVE-IN CHRISTMAS SHOW COMING DECEMBER 2020

CHRISTMAS IS CANCELLED? OH NO, IT ISN’T!

THE WORLD’S FIRST DRIVE-IN CHRISTMAS SHOW COMING DECEMBER 2020

Get into the festive spirit at a friendly social distanced
Christmas performance at outdoor venues across the UK

CAR PARK PARTY lifted the country’s spirits this summer with the ONLY national tour of comedy, theatre and live music shows. After rave reviews from the public and press, they’re back this winter with CAR PARK PANTO, in partnership with the Birmingham Stage Company and Horrible Histories, to present HORRIBLE CHRISTMAS.

Just when you thought your Christmas show had been cancelled, Horrible Histories comes to the rescue with their own unique take on the festive season.  HORRIBLE CHRISTMAS is the story of how Christmas came to be what it is today, enabling families across the UK to enter into the festive spirit in a safe, socially distanced manner, from the comfort of their own sleigh car
 *****
When Christmas comes under threat from a jolly man dressed in red, it’s up to one young boy to save the day – but can he save Christmas? From Victorian villains to Medieval monks, Puritan parties to Tudor treats, join us on a hair-raising adventure through the history of Christmas in the company of Charles Dickens, Oliver Cromwell, King Henry VIII and St Nicholas as they all join forces to save the festive season!

It’s a celebration of Christmas in the most wonderful, funny and moving way you’ll ever see!
 *****
After a truly unique summer performing at various sell-out CAR PARK THEATRE events, it was evident to Horrible Histories Actor/Manager Neal Foster (Birmingham Stage Company) that the audience for live theatre is huge even during this current time; “We were thrilled to be invited to take part in the run of Car Park Party events around the country and were overwhelmed by the response of the audience, who were clearly delighted and relieved to see actors live on stage again. I was totally surprised by just how well Car Park Theatre worked and loved the whole collective experience.”

With normal everyday life still somewhat far away, the cost of the pandemic is continuing to be felt and whilst we still have Christmas to look forward to, it’s going to feel very different without the family trip to the theatre.  Christmas is often the first time a child experiences live theatre and now with hundreds of shows, big and small, being cancelled throughout the land, families and children in particular are going to lose out on one the cornerstones of the festive period.  Horrible Histories will hopefully go some way to providing the laughter and cheer with this perfect story for the times in a car park near you this December.

Neal Foster continued; “We can’t wait to be back on stage in cities and towns that will be crying out for a Christmas show to entertain their families. As you’d expect from Horrible Histories, it’s not a traditional pantomime, but a journey through the story of Christmas in the company of the season’s most fabulous characters. It’s the perfect story for families this winter, as one young boy battles to save Christmas for the world, in this hilarious, joyous and moving celebration.”

The team behind Car Park Theatre are passionate about live theatrical entertainment and, in a world where this has been put on pause, they have created the ultimate safe, social distancing solution to bring the festive cheer back into people’s lives and communities back together.

There are limited tickets for each show priced at £45 per sleigh car (£2.50 booking fee applies). Grab the reigns and secure your space for the drive-in event of the season.

  • Autumn programme follows exceptional success of the Philharmonia Sessions format this summer, with 100,000+ viewers from all over the world tuning in for performances designed specifically for online audiences

The Philharmonia Orchestra today announces its full programme for October and November 2020: six online performances in two strands, encompassing live-streamed concerts, pre-recorded performances and radio broadcasts, as the Orchestra continues to build out its new digital performance schedule.

Philharmonia Sessions

The Philharmonia Sessions – a series of critically acclaimed free, pre-recorded digital performances, conceived and created especially for an online audience – will continue with two new releases, following three films this summer that have reached six-figure audiences in the UK and around the world, and drawn critical acclaim.

The next Philharmonia Sessions feature Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting Beethoven’s ballet score, The Creatures of Prometheus (24 November), in a dramatic format filmed at Battersea Arts Centre with Stephen Fry narrating a new script by Gerard McBurney. The project is adapted from the programme that Salonen would have opened with for the Philharmonia’s 2020/21 London Season.

Jakub Hrůša and cellist Alisa Weilerstein follow on 5 November, in an all-Dvořák programme featuring his Rondo and Silent Woods for cello and orchestra. Both Philharmonia Sessions will be premiered, free-to-view, on the Philharmonia’s YouTube channel.

Live from Royal Festival Hall

In October the Philharmonia Orchestra will perform on the Royal Festival Hall stage for the first time since 15 March 2020, in the first of four live-streamed concerts as part of the Southbank Centre’s autumn Inside Out series.

Featuring artists including conductors Esa-Pekka Salonen, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Elim Chan and Pablo Heras-Casado, soprano Julia Bullock and violinists Sergey Khachatryan and Nicola Benedetti, the four concerts will also be the Orchestra’s first paid-for, ticketed performances since before the COVID-19 lockdown. The live concerts will be streamed directly by the Philharmonia in the UK and via IDAGIO’s Global Concert Hall outside the UK.

Principal Conductor Designate Santtu-Matias Rouvali opens the series on 26 October with a programme of American music: Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring; Steve Reich’s Music for Pieces of Wood (with Rouvali as one of the five percussionists); Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks and Dances in the Canebrakes by Florence Price (1887-1953), an African-American composer whose works have been rediscovered in the last few years, as profiled by Alex Ross in the New Yorker.

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Britten’s Les Illuminations (with soprano Julia Bullock) and Ravel’s Mother Goose (complete ballet) for the second concert on 29 October. Both Rouvali and Salonen’s concerts will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 alongside the audio-visual live stream.

On 12 November Elim Chan, who would have conducted the Philharmonia at Edinburgh International Festival this summer, leads a programme including Jessie Montgomery’s Strum and Sergey Khachatryan performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. In the final concert on 30 November, Nicola Benedetti returns in an all-Beethoven programme with conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and the Second Symphony as part of Beethoven 250 celebrations.

About the Philharmonia’s programme

Although the Philharmonia cannot yet perform for live audiences with this phase of activity, the Orchestra has begun to perform to socially-distanced audiences this autumn, at Garsington Opera’s production of Beethoven’s Fidelio, and plans are being developed for performances for live audiences at venues across the UK.

Alexander Van Ingen, Chief Executive of the Philharmonia, said: “We are thrilled with the success of our online Philharmonia Sessions series, and excited to announce a strong programme of concerts for the autumn. We are proud to have been the first UK symphony orchestra to create exceptional digital content this summer, freely available to an international audience, and now the first UK orchestra to return to live opera performance in partnership with Garsington Opera. Thanks to the generosity of the Philharmonia family of supporters, we have been able to weather the storm and continue to present superb performances for an audience across the country, and I am immensely grateful to our players for their dedication and brilliance as we adapt to new ways of presenting great music and continue to develop our performances across the UK.”

Access to the arts is a fundamental right. As such, the Philharmonia’s autumn season provides a mix of both free and ticketed online concerts so that everyone can experience the joy of classical music. The Philharmonia Sessions are free and for everyone, streamed via the Philharmonia’s YouTube channel. The Live from Royal Festival Hall series is ticketed with digital seats available for as little as £9.

This programme, along with the Orchestra’s ability to plan with ambition for the future is only made possible thanks to the vital support of Friends and Donors. During both the Philharmonia Sessions and Live from Royal Festival Hall series, the Philharmonia will ask those that can to make a donation in support of the Orchestra’s work and national reach.

At a time when the Orchestra cannot play live for audiences in its residency venues across the UK, supporters’ donations will keep the Philharmonia playing and secure the future of the Orchestra. ‘Dare Devil Rides To Jarama’ brings to life the powerful political and economic forces engulfing 1930s Europe and the reasons why so many ordinary people made the extraordinary choice to leave their family, friends and home to defend the Spanish Republic.

The Spanish Civil War was fought 1936 to 1939. Republicans loyal to the left-leaning Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic, aligned with anarchists, communist and syndicalists took to arms against a revolt by the hard-right Nationalists, a group made up Falangists, monarchists, conservatives and Catholics, led by a military group of which General Francisco Franco was at the forefront.

The political climate at the time meant that the war was a complex one, and was considered a class struggle, a war of religion, a struggle between dictatorship and republican democracy, and between fascism and communism.

When Spaniards rose up to resist General Franco’s military rebellion, it was an inspiration to millions of people across the world. The heroic struggle of the Spanish people alerted the rest of the world to the threat of fascism.

The play commemorates and celebrates the contribution and sacrifice of the volunteer International Brigades from all over the world, including two and a half thousand from Britain and Ireland, who recognised that the defence of Spanish democracy against fascism was their fight too. Many of the volunteers crossed the Pyrenees to help the Spanish Republic, convinced that this evil had to be stopped to prevent a wider European war.

Compelling and humorous, Dare Devil Rides To Jarama centres on the contrasting true lives of International Brigaders Clem Beckett and Christopher Caudwell. Beckett, a Lancashire blacksmith and famous star of the speedway track, and Caudwell, a renowned writer, poet and philosopher, were killed together at Jarama in February 1937, having become friends as members of the British Battalion’s machine-gun company.

Through their stories, the play sheds light on the political and social world of the 1930s and all that inspired and confronted the Brigaders on their journeys to Spain. It captures the raw passions and emotions of the Spanish Civil War – idealism to despair, hope to anger, determination to fear – through powerful storytelling, stirring song and poetry.

imitating the dog co-director Andrew Quick said:

It’s a strange time to be making a new show but we are really looking forward to meeting the new challenges of creating work in the present conditions. We felt it was important to keep going and create a piece that was not only magical and entertaining but will abide by social distancing guidance and be COVID 19 safe. It will be a challenge to make but it is a hugely entertaining production that is scary in parts but also full of fun, with some deep and dark themes running through it.  We’ll be using screen and camera technologies for which we are known and I just can’t wait to share with audiences and venues like Leeds Playhouse that have supported us over the last decade and for us all to come together and experience all the joys of live theatre outdoors.”

UK’s leading touring theatre companies to join forces this autumn to present Signal Fires

SIGNAL FIRES

  • IN A UK FIRST, TOURING THEATRE COMPANIES ARE JOINING FORCES THIS AUTUMN TO TOUR A SINGLE IDEA ACROSS THE UK AT A TIME WHEN PHYSICAL TOURING IS IMPOSSIBLE
  • TAKING INSPIRATION FROM AN ORIGINAL FORM OF THEATRE – STORYTELLING BY FIRELIGHT – THESE LEADING COMPANIES ARE COMING TOGETHER TO UNEARTH THE PAST, UNDERSTAND THE PRESENT AND REIMAGINE THE FUTURE
  • EVENTS WILL BE PRESENTED LIVE AND VIRTUALLY TO AUDIENCES ACROSS ALL FOUR NATIONS
  • SIGNAL FIRES WILL BE LIT IN A CELEBRATION OF TOURING THEATRE AND AS A WARNING OF THE THREAT STILL FACING THE INDUSTRY
  • DOZENS OF THEATRE COMPANIES  ARE INVOLVED INCLUDING ENGLISH TOURING THEATRE, FUEL, GRAEAE, HEADLONG, KNEEHIGH, NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE OF GREAT BRITAIN, PAINES PLOUGH, PENTABUS, FEN IN ASSOCIATION WITH OUT OF JOINT, SLUNG LOW, AND YELLOW EARTH THEATRE
  • LOCATIONS TO INCLUDE BELFAST, BRADFORD, LIVERPOOL, MANCHESTER, SHROPSHIRE, YORKSHIRE, LONDON, ESSEX, LEEDS, BRISTOL, PLYMOUTH, CORNWALL

The UK’s leading touring theatre companies are uniting this autumn to present Signal Fires, a nationwide project inspired by one of the original forms of theatre – storytelling around a fire.

Presented at a time when it is not possible to physically tour, 45North, Arcade, Beyond Face, Big Telly, Boundless, Eastern Angles, English Touring Theatre, Fen in association with Out of Joint, Fio in association with Tara Arts Fuel, Graeae, Headlong, Hightide, Kestrel Theatre Company, Kneehigh, Macha Productions, National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, New Perspectives, Pentabus, Pilot, Paines Plough, SBC Theatre, Scottish International Storytelling Festival, Slung Low, Spare Tyre, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men and Yellow Earth Theatre (with more to be announced) are uniting for the first time, to collectively tour a single idea throughout October and into November.

Each company will self-produce an evening of work – a signal fire – at a different location across the UK  in celebration of our fundamental need to tell stories, in order to help make sense of the world around us and reimagine the future. Presented outdoors in front of socially-distanced live audiences, or digitally for those who are shielding or currently unable to travel, every signal fire will incorporate a different form of physical fire, ranging from large-scale bonfires to candles, virtual fires to campfires, and BBQ’s to mobile phone lights. Working with hundreds of UK freelancers each company’s fire will be different from the last, spanning different disciplines reflecting the breadth and diversity of the touring circuit.

In light of the current crisis, the signal fires will create beacons across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland warning of the threat the industry continues to face while celebrating the extraordinary vibrancy of touring theatre and the freelancers they engage. Stretching across four nations, this festival of fires will connect audiences, freelance artists and touring companies together in a communal, national act of storytelling.

The health and safety of audiences, artists, creative teams and staff alike is of the upmost importance. All companies involved in the project will implement COVID secure measures to ensure that their full process, from rehearsal to performance, is in line with the current government guidelines, following strict hygiene protocols and allowing for social distancing.

Holly Race Roughan, Associate Artistic Director of Headlong said:

‘Signal Fires is an unprecedented project born out of unprecedented times. It has been incredibly inspiring and humbling to connect with so many different touring theatre companies. To be reminded of the sheer breadth and diversity of the UK touring ecology, the audiences we engage, and crucially what we now stand on the brink of losing. Touring theatre companies are vital for sharing stories across communities, so we can learn from each-other and reimagine a future together. Signal Fires demonstrates the power of collaboration and the need to embrace both innovation and new ways of working if we are to weather the challenging months ahead.’

Richard Twyman, CEO and Artistic Director of English Touring Theatre said:

‘When the theatres first closed, a group of touring companies came together to support each other; sharing ideas, learning and resources. A collective of companies determined to keep making work, serving audiences and engaging artists. Signal Fires was born from these conversations. As we all seek to make sense of what we’re living through and what comes next, we look to our storytellers to guide us forward. Each fire on its own is a small-scale coming together, but collectively, lit up across the UK, they represent a national act of storytelling. A chance to connect: to celebrate imagination and empathy in this time of isolation and uncertainty.’

Signal Fires will run from October to November at various locations across the UK. Further details will be announced shortly.

Acclaimed comedians and performers from around the world have been confirmed to join the cast of Lars von Trier’s The Boss of It All when it livestreams 18th – 20thThe film has been adapted for Zoom, updating the office comedy to a work from home set up, by New Perspectives Artistic Director Jack McNamara based on his previous stage version. For every performance a different special guest will Zoom in live from their homes, ranging from London, Los Angeles and Mumbai, to play the enigmatic Icelandic boss Finnur in the final scene.

The opening performance on 18th September will feature international cabaret sensation, Le Gateau Chocolat, followed by Indian comedian Anuvab Pal and America’s $1 Funnyman Neil Hamburger on the 19th at 4pm and 8pm respectively. Game of Thrones star Gemma Whelan will be performing alongside her husband, comedian Gerry Howell, for the 4pm show the 20th, and finally the evening show that day will feature Los Angeles based clown and comedian Natalie Palamides (Nate).

They join an already stellar cast including Josie Lawrence, Jamie De Courcey, Ross Armstrong, Rachel Summers, David Alade, Angela Bain and Japanese comedian Yuriko Kotani.

Artistic Director Jack McNamara said, “We wanted to give our live audiences a real treat with a special guest who appeared just for them. These are some of the most inventive, beautifully off-the-wall people in contemporary comedy and performance and it is a serious thrill to have them on board with this production. They will each add such a distinctive flavor to the show they appear in, making each performance a one of a kind for the audience.  I cannot wait to see my own script pulled in a wholly unexpected directions by each guest!”

The office comedy drama was originally presented at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013 to widespread critical acclaim before transferring to Soho Theatre. In 2020 the office setting has now become a remote working set up, with the action taking place via a series of Zoom meetings.

For years the boss of an IT company has tricked his staff into believing he is simply another co-worker. So when he needs a ‘real’ boss to help close the deal of a lifetime, he hires an actor to play the role. What could possibly go wrong? Marking one of Lars von Trier’s rare forays into comedy, this distinctive and eccentric exploration of office politics has been rewritten for the stage by Jack McNamara following its hit premiere seven years ago. The play has since been performed around the world

Soho Theatre is London’s most vibrant producer for new theatre, comedy and cabaret. We pursue creative excellence, harnessing an artistic spirit that is based in our new writing roots, the radical ethos of the fringe and the traditions of punk culture and queer performance. We champion voices that challenge from outside of the mainstream, and sometimes from within it too. We value entertainment, accessibility and enjoy a good show. We are a registered charity and social enterprise and our audiences are diverse in age, background and outlook.

Ordinarily our work plays to live audiences of 250,000 audiences a year in our Dean Street venue, at the Edinburgh Fringe and beyond. Since our temporary closure due to Covid-19 we have re-launched our online platform Soho Theatre On Demand, which hosted the phenomenally successful live recording of Fleabag. We are also working towards the opening of an exciting second venue, a “local theatre with a national profile” in Walthamstow, currently slated to open in 2022.

Soho Theatre’s board is chaired by Dame Heather Rabbatts DBE and the company is led by Executive Director Mark Godfrey and Creative Director David Luff.

HOPE THEATRE LAUNCHES NEW DIGITAL PROJECT – HOPE AT HOME

THE HOPE THEATRE TO COMMISSION

HOPE AT HOME

OFF WEST END VENUE SECURES FUNDING

FOR NEW DIGITAL PROJECT

5 FILMS. 5 PREMIERES. 5 STORIES.

The Hope Theatre in Islingtonhas secured funding from City Bridge Trust as part of a funding bid from the London Community Response Fund for a new digital project this autumn.

Hope at Home is a 5-part online series of 15-minute monologues each exploring a single fascinating slice of life set at home. The commissioning process, which launches in September, will see 25-30 artists brought on board to create the films. Casting and artistic team callouts will be advertised both on Spotlight and The Hope’s social media platforms. The monologues will be launched via the theatre’s digital channels on 25 November, with each film premiering for one week for free as ‘pay what you want’ to encourage access and donations to help secure the future of the critically acclaimed pub theatre. The project will finish with a Christmas special in December.

Kennedy Bloomer, the Artistic Director of the theatre since January 2020 says, “we are delighted to launch Hope at Home – in these uncertain times, we’re looking forward to getting creative, providing arts employment and making audiences smile again. This is a really exciting project and being able to launch them digitally will allow us to be more accessible than ever.

The Hope Theatre fast became a critically acclaimed venue on London’s Off West End after opening only six years ago. The pub theatre won a double Best Actor award for Bart Lambert and Jack Reitman in its production of Thrill Me: The Leopold and Loeb Story at the OffWestEnd awards shortly before closing in early March 2020.

Since closure, the theatre has launched #HopeOnline – a series of digital workshops including a Q&A with Peaky Blinders co-producer Chris Ballantyne, a Creative Mindfulness Masterclass with the Different Womxn Project founded by Ariane Barnes, and Be Heard – a monologue writing competition for 11-25 year olds supported by the Arsenal Foundation.

The Hope Theatre, Islington has been supported by a grant from the Arts Council Emergency Response Fund to help the venue survive during the Covid-19 crisis. This grant was made possible by the National Lottery and its players.

Although The Hope Theatre doesn’t receive regular public subsidy, it was the first Off West End venue to open with a house agreement with Equity, the UK’s largest performers union, to ensure a legal wage for all actors, stage managers and box office staff working at the theatre. As an intimate 50-seat pub theatre, The Hope has a small team made up of Artistic Director Kennedy Bloomer, Associate Director Toby Hampton and Technical Manager Daniel Johnson.
