The Barricade Boys Review

Turbine Theatre – Summer Showtime on the Coaling Jetty – 18th September 2020

Reviewed by Claire Roderick

5*****

Released from lockdown and bouncing around the stage like excited puppies, the Barricade Boys’ night on the Coaling Jetty showed what we have been missing these past months. There has been lots of stunning and creative online content, but the buzz and joy of coming together for a live performance is unbeatable, even in the freezing wind! I’m still not sure who was the most excited – the audience or the boys!

Simon Schofield, Keiron Brown, Scott Garnham and Lee Honey-Jones are as slick as ever singing Les Mis favourites, upping the tempo with Blues Brothers, Motown and Frankie Valli medleys, as well as a gorgeous West Side Story section. Apparently there were sound issues, so they couldn’t hear themselves, and it was COLD, but the voices and harmonies were just amazing, and their version of Bohemian Rhapsody was as stunning as it is indoors.

The easy shtick between, and often during, numbers is , as ever, a joy – and after Keiron Brown’s moving rendition of Music of the Night, the toes came off and the goofing around was ramped up for a wonderful Uptown Funk disco mashup. By the time they got to the Beatles, the audience were up and dancing.

A fantastic, fun show, and a wonderful celebration of the return of live performances – and made even better by the tip to keep an eye on The Barricade Boys’ socials for dates for their socially distanced tour as they take their cracking Christmas Cabaret on the road later this year!

Star of stage, screen and lockdown live-stream, and current BGT Semi-FinalistMyra DuBois’ weekly online ‘self-help seminar’ ‘A Problem Shared’ was broadcast over lockdown and became nothing short of a modern miracle, an internet sensation that lesser stars can only dream of.

A benevolently empathetic mix of sage advice and relaxation tips presented as only Myra can, it has helped thousands all over the world including many world-famous celebrities. Now South Yorkshire’s rose is bringing her unique advice to the masses via the wonderful world of digital media as she returns for a brand-new series of monthly shows

Featuring everything you’ve come to love and expect from Myra including her own unique brand of warmth and unbridled kindness, A Problem Shared utilises Myra’s… ‘unique’ people skills to heal the trauma of her wounded public. Myra herself shall lead meditations, contemplations, and pontifications as she selflessly takes on the woes of her celebrity guests and adoring audience of AdMyras (Myra’s pet name for her fans).

Having left her native South Yorkshire 2008 for the bright lights of London’s burlesque clubs and gay bars, Myra has performed at Soho’s Madame JoJos, Camden’s The Black Cap and the legendary Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Accolades include shortlisted for ‘Best Character or Improv’ at the 2019 Chortle Awards, and NATYS: New Act of the Year finalist in 2012, She’s “bust a gut funny” according to Graham Norton and “hilarious” if you ask John Bishop. Myra also counts Rylan Clark, Christine Bianco and Richard E Grant amongst her fans. Sir Tim Rice said Myra’s rendition of his song ‘I Know Him So Well’ was “Definitive”.

Myra made her critically acclaimed solo Edinburgh Festival debut with Self AdMyra in 2016 which went on to tour the UK in 2017, generating AdMyras across the nation. She also supported Bianca Del Rio on her UK tour in 2017 and 2018 playing renowned venues such as The Hammersmith Apollo and The Liverpool Empire. Her 2019 Edinburgh show got a slew of five-star reviews. A Problem Shared was originally conceived for The Edinburgh Festival 2020 but has since taken on a life of its own, with thousands of new devoted fans discovering Myra online.

TV credits include BBC1’s The John Bishop Show and was as regular panellist on C5’s Celebrity Big Brother’s Bit on the Side. Myra was part of the esteemed line-up of guests for ‘Un-Royal Variety’ at The Hackney Empire and ‘All Star Brexit Cabaret’ at London Coliseum, both hosted and curated by London cabaret legend Johnny Woo.  In 2019 Myra made her international debut at the Sydney Opera House. Myra is also part of the cast of the upcomingmovie version of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie – but has been sworn to secrecy about the details. And of course, she is currently in the Semi Finals of Britain’s Got Talent 2020.

  • THE BARN THEATRE HAVE ANNOUNCED A 2020 RECOVERY SEASON WHICH INCLUDES A REVIVAL OF STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S MARRY ME A LITTLE AND A NEW ADAPTATION OF J.M. BARRIE’S PETER PAN
  • THE THEATRE WILL RUN AT A REDUCED CAPACITY WITH SAFETY PROCEDURES INCLUDING A NEW SEATING PLAN, PERSPEX SCREENS AND AN UPGRADED VENTILATION SYSTEM
  • THE NEWLY ANNOUNCED SHOWS JOIN CURRENT PRODUCTION PRIVATE PEACEFUL, WHICH RUNS UNTIL 4 OCTOBER, AND THE UPCOMING DIGITAL PRODUCTION OF WHAT A CARVE UP!

The Barn Theatre has announced their full theatre recovery season for 2020 with two new productions being announced to join the current production of Private Peaceful, which is currently running until 4 October.

The season, which will feature smaller cast sizes as well as a reduced capacity in the auditorium, follows the postponement of the Barn’s original 2020 Built by Barn Season earlier this year. The theatre intends to reschedule the postponed productions to 2021 with new dates being announced in due course.

The Theatre Recovery Season will consist of a two-hand actor-musician production of Simon Reade’s adaptation of Private Peaceful (10 to 27 September), a new revival production of Stephen Sondheim’s Marry Me A Little (16 October to 8 November) and the world debut of Alan Pollock’s new stage adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan (21 November to 3 January 2020).

The Barn Theatre have also recently announced that they will be co-producing the world debut of Henry Filloux-Bennett’s new digital play adaptation of Jonathon Coe’s What a Carve Up!, with the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield and the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. Directed by Tamara Harvey, the digital production will run from 31 October – 29 November 2020.

Kirk Jameson will return to the Barn Theatre as a Director-in-Residence for the two newly announced productions. His previous directorial work with the Barn Theatre includes The World Goes ‘Round (co-produced by Piers Cottee-Jones) at the theatre’s first outdoor theatre festival BarnFest and the 2018 Built by Barn production of Stiles + Drewe’s Just So.

Iwan Lewis, Artistic Director of the Barn Theatre, said of the new season, “I am absolutely thrilled that we have been able to produce this Theatre Recovery Season for the end of 2020. We have been overwhelmed by the positive response to our new safety procedures since we opened at the end of July for our first outdoor theatre festival, BarnFest, and again when we reopened last week for indoor theatre with Private Peaceful. We have had the seal of approval from Visit England to say that “We’re Good To Go” and we are confident that our audiences will experience the safest and most enjoyable return to live theatre. We are determined to bring back this year’s original programming in 2021 however we hope that our audiences love this new season we have worked hard to put together. Smaller shows are not a compromise on quality and this season will be a testament to that. In the words of Shakespeare, though she be but littleshe is fierce.

For their re-opening, the Barn Theatre have implemented numerous procedures to ensure audience safety throughout their experience. The theatre runs at a reduced capacity with Perspex screens being placed between groups in a new seating layout which ensure social distancing measures are adhered to. The theatre has also announced that they have a new and upgraded air filtration system which exceeds governing guidelines to ensure the experience is the safest the theatre can provide. The cast and creative team will also adhere to Government guidance on social distancing and temperature checks.

The safety measures that were successfully utilised during BarnFest – the theatre’s outdoor theatre festival – including temperature checks on arrival, mandatory masks for all patrons over 11 years old, staggered arrival times, sanitisation of public areas and hand sanitiser at entrance and exit points continue for indoor theatrical performances.

PRIVATE PEACEFUL

Based on the modern classic by Michael Morpurgo (War Horse, The Butterfly Lion), Private Peaceful tells the story of Tommo Peaceful as he reflects upon the events that made him the person he is now, from first love to fighting on the battlefield alongside his brother. Set against the backdrop of World War One, the intimate production runs from 10 – 27 September, with press night on Tuesday 15 September.

Private Peaceful will be performed by Emily Costello and James Demaine, directed by Alexander Knott with Zöe Grain as associate director and movement director. The transfer production will feature sound design by Harry Smith (Henry VDaddy Long Legs) and lighting design by Sam Rowcliffe-Tanner (Henry VJust So).

Private Peaceful is a co-production by BoxLess TheatreBarn Theatre and Take Two Theatricals, with associate producer Thomas Hopkins.

MARRY ME A LITTLE

The charming and bittersweet one-act musical revue, which follows two single strangers as they explore their secret, unshared fantasies as they are left alone in their studio apartments on a Saturday night, will run from 16 October to 8 November, with press night on 20 October. Conceived by Craig Lucas and Norman René, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the production will be directed by Kirk Jameson (Just So, Madagascar) with musical staging by Sam Spencer-Lane (The Last Five Years, Aspects of Love), set and costume design by Gregor Donnelly and musical direction by Arlene McNaught (SIX).

WHAT A CARVE UP!

The digital production, which will be directed by Tamara Harvey (Home, I’m Darling), chronicles the events leading up to the ‘Winshaw Murders’. Filled with murder, mayhem and madness, the murder mystery turns a satirical eye on what it is like to be a member of one of the most corrupt, powerful and toxic families in the country.

Produced by the Barn TheatreLawrence Batley Theatre and New Wolsey Theatre, the murder mystery, based on the award-winning novel by Jonathan Coe, is written by Henry Filloux-Bennett (Nigel Slater’s Toast) and directed by Tamara Harvey (Home, I’m Darling).

PETER PAN

“Desperate not to miss bedtime, a man in a hotel room three thousand miles from home recreates his daughter’s favourite story: an epic tale of adventure, pirates, fairies – a crocodile with gigantic teeth! – and a little boy who refuses to grow old….”

The Christmas season will be filled with magic and a trip to Neverland with the world premiere of Alan Pollock’s new stage adaptation of the J. M. Barrie classic Peter Pan from 21 November 2020 to 3 January 2021 with press night on 24 November. Phoenix Arts Club Autumn Season

Phoenix Arts Club Autumn Season Announcement

A dining room table

Description automatically generated

The legendary Phoenix Arts Club are delighted to announce their Autumn Season of socially distanced shows following a successful crowdfunding campaign which has so far raised £2.161 of their £100,000 target.

The Crowdfunder, was launched to become a CIC (community interest company); a special form of non-charitable limited company, which exists primarily to benefit a community and with a view to pursuing a social purpose, rather than to make a profit for shareholders.  At launch the team committed to spend the funds raised on further building The Phoenix’s artistic programming (which already at pre-COVID stood at 600 shows a year) in order to ensure work for myriad performers. In addition, the venue will be investing in much-needed research and development to meet changing technology and performance space needs, in order to develop and continue vital community work.

Now after a stella effort raising funds, they will see the fruits of their labour, with the venue hosting famous faces from comedy alongside wonderous musical theatre and cabaret events such as Robin Askwith, Al Murray, Iain Stirling, Elf Lyons, Lou Sanders, Ada Campe, Onyx Lounge, Donna Trumpand A Night At The Soozicials.

Celebrating thirty years of entertaining entertainers, The Phoenix Arts Club is the west end’s multi-award-winning, independently owned and operated entertainment club. Secreted away down the same little side street used in the opening sequence of Harry Potter and tucked beneath The Phoenix Theatre lies The Phoenix Arts Club, the charming escape from the London norm. The lively and nostalgic Theatre Bar & Restaurant is located in the original dressing and rehearsal rooms of The Phoenix Theatre where Laurence Olivier made his debut on stage in the 1930s in “Private Lives” with Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence.

Peter Dunbar Development & Marketing Director says:

“We are delighted that The Phoenix Arts Club is back open and welcoming socially distanced audiences to London’s West End! Our Autumn season of events is our most diverse yet, with arena-filling comedians, LGBTQIA+ performers, a variety of cabarets celebrating Black History Month, and newcomer grassroots music showcases filling being put on nightly. Fewer than 70 tickets are available per show, and we’ve been delighted with how many tickets we’ve sold so far, showing that demand for live entertainment is returning.”

8th November: Another Evening with the Legend That is Robin Askwith (4th November one Sold Out)

After selling-out his first show in less than 24hours, we’ve added a second date on for the legend that is ROBIN ASKWITH. “I had dinner last night with some friends here in Gozo and at some point I got into relating the story of my lunches with Gregory Peck at Elstree Studios in 1975…how he ran my lines for me playing the part to be played by Jill Gascoine  (he was very good) ..it got to the bit with Clint Eastwood and I noticed the restaurant had now filled up with what was basically an unpaying audience…Today I get a call from Misty Moon’s Stuart Morriss , who informs that there is a slot available at The Phoenix Arts Club on November 4th… I said… “Take it, for God’s sake Stu, I’m going crazy here and working for nothing…”

15th November: Break A Lash – Mercury’s Musical Meltdown

Break a Lash, the cabaret celebration of the musicals puts on its first production – and it’s a post lockdown kick line of a show. All Mercury ever wanted was to be in a musical. But they were a bit too ‘you know’ to play the leading parts. They persevered, came to London, and worked their vocal cords to the bone. And then the world shut down and it seemed as if all dreams of jazz hands and 5,6,7,8 were doomed. Until one night, alongside burlesque dancing legends Felicity Furore and Demi Noire, Mercury hatched a plan to not just be in one musical but ALL OF THEM. Can’t choose between Chicago and Wicked? No need, because these cabaret darlings are gonna shimmy their way through as many favourites as they possibly can, and they’ve got their sights set on an Olivier Award.

The REP announces the postponement of Nativity! The Musical

The REP announces the postponement of Nativity! The Musical

Birmingham Repertory Theatre has today announced that Nativity! The Musical, due to play at the venue from 17 Nov 2020 – 3 Jan 2021 has been postponed to 16 November 2021 – 2 January 2022.

Current ticket holders will be contacted in due course via email with details of an alternative date in the rescheduled run or alternatively the option of credit or refund for the total ticket value. Tickets for the rescheduled dates are also on sale to the general public from today.

The REP’s Artistic Director, Sean Foley and Executive Director, Rachael Thomas said; “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the postponement of this year’s Christmas run of Nativity! The Musical. The current restrictions and effects of the COVID-19 pandemic make it impossible to stage a production of this scale successfully, especially considering the large involvement of school age children. However, we are overjoyed that audiences will have their chance to see Nativity in its original home when it returns to The REP for the festive season in 2021.

“We understand just how much a visit to the theatre means to families at Christmas and as this is also a vital time of year for theatres it’s not a decision we have taken lightly. However, with no further Government guidance on when indoor performances can resume without social distancing in place, it is simply not possible for Nativity! The Musical to take place at The REP this season.

“Since 16 March, The REP has been effectively unable to trade.  As the theatre generates 80% of its income from selling tickets and associated income streams the impact of this has been and continues to be devastating.  The loss of our Christmas show is a huge blow to all of us here at The REP – it’s always a highlight of our year. Our sincerest thanks go to our loyal audiences who have shown incredible support over the past few months.

Nativity The Musical! started its life at The REP back in 2017 and since then it has gone on to bring joy to over a million people across the UK. We look forward to its homecoming in 2021 instead.”

Nativity! The Musical features all of your favourite sing-a-long hits from the movies including Sparkle and ShineNazarethOne Night One MomentShe’s the Brightest Star and a whole host of new songs.

Nativity! The Musical will run at The REP from 16 November 2021 – 2 January 2022 with tickets on public sale from today – for more information and to book visit birmingham-rep.co.uk.

Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s production of Nativity! The Musical is presented by Jamie Wilson, Entertainment One and Belgrade Theatre Coventry.

Seeds | Nina Sosanya joins new audio drama

No Stone Theatre presents:
Seeds
The legacy of Nikolai Vavilov, founder of the world’s first seed bank, told as an audio drama starring Nina Sosanya
Text by Nick Walker | Directed by Nicholas Pitt
Weekly from 7th October 2020

@nostonetheatre | #Seedspodcast | www.nostonetheatre.com

Nikolai Vavilov (1887 – 1943) was a Russian plant geneticist who founded the world’s first seed bank; his life’s goal was to end world famine, but he himself starved to death in a Soviet prison. Now his legacy is explored in a new podcast, starring Nina Sosanya (W1A, The Last Tango in Halifax, His Dark Materials). The audio drama follows four scientists in besieged 1940s Leningrad, dedicated to their work as the world around them crumbles, raising issues around food security, biodiversity and intensive farming. Meanwhile a patient wakes in hospital, unable to remember who she is and how she got there, she begins a journey through modern day St Petersburg, determined to uncover the truth.

When the research and development of their stage production Seeds of Hope was stalled by COVID-19, No Stone Theatre shifted their focus and decided to use the material they had to make an audio drama podcast series.Working with many of the same creatives and partners around the UK, the company plans to release each episode in partnership with a different UK regional partner, creating a digital ‘tour’ including Warwick University, Julie’s Bicycle, Leicester Curve, Derby Theatre, Camden People’s Theatre, Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the Arcola.

Vavilov created the first seed bank at his institute in Leningrad, Russia out of samples that he collected from across the world. During World War II he fell out of favour with Stalin and starved to death in a Soviet prison. Vavilov’s story and the issues that his story raise remain underrepresented in the public domain but the issues of food security and biodiversity have never been more relevant – although obesity is a major problem in the developed world, malnutrition remains a threat for millions of others and climate change will make food security even more fragile, bought much closer to home by the empty supermarket shelves that we saw in March and April of this year. These issues link to discussions about intensive farming and climate change.

Nina Sosanya will be playing the role of Patient throughout the podcast series. Nina is best known for her TV roles in W1A and Last Tango in Halifax, though more recently she was also seen in Good OmensKilling Eve, and His Dark Materials. Her theatre credits include roles at the National Theatre, RSC, Donmar Warehouse, Manchester Royal Exchange, West Yorkshire Playhouse and West End. She will be joined in the cast by Graeme Rose, Katy Stephens, Kirsty Rider and Jordan Kemp.

For No Stone theatre, Director Nicolas Pitt and Producer Johanna Taylor said “As a company, we are still committed to live theatre and are eager for its full re-emergence. Until then, we wanted to create a shared experience around themes that we all suddenly and unexpectedly have a greater collective appreciation of with a hope for the future at its heart.”

Nina Sosanya said “I’m really pleased to be taking part in Seeds as it addresses some of the most pressing issues of our times –biodiversity and food security. As we saw recently at the start of the pandemic, we are not as far away from empty shelves as we might have thought. What’s more, the story of Nikolai Vavilov is fascinating and I’m looking forward to sharing it with audiences who download the audio drama”

Director Nicholas Pitt is the Artistic Director and co-founder of No Stone Theatre. He was previously a creative associate of Idle Motion.Nicholas was resident director at the Birmingham REP from 2014 to 2015, and returned to work as associate director for the national tour of Of Mice and Men in 2016. In 2018 he directed Rhum and Clay’s Stage award winning Mistero BuffoRecent directing credits include Don’t Look Away by NOAVE Theatre and he is also the Director ofSstrategy for The Public Campaign for The Arts.

Playwright Nick Walker is a Perrier nominated writer, producer, and director. He has written widely for radio, including 3 series of the cult sci-fi show The First King of Mars starring Peter Capaldi, and 5 series of the Nordic noir series Annika Stranded. He is the author of two critically acclaimed novels Blackbox and Helloland and is currently working on an original new drama series and a screenplay with Black Camel pictures. Nick also writes for stage, including commissions for China Plate Theatre and The Belgrade Theatre.

No Stone theatre was founded in 2018 by director Nicholas Pitt and producer Johanna Taylor to initiate dynamic interdisciplinary collaborations and create contemporary theatre about issues drawn from our current cultural moment.

Private peaceful Review

The Barn Theatre, Cirencester – until 4 October 2020

Reviewed by Josie Smith

5*****

You have to admire the Barn Theatre. While so many things have failed and closed The Barn Theatre has not sat still. When they could not have people in the theatre they produced brilliant online content including Bard from the Barn, when people could be outside they created a wonderful Barnfest, with lots of outdoor performances including The World goes Round which I went to see. Now they have added a new air filtration system, put up Perspex screens, got some thermometers and made a COVID secure theatre.

The Barn theatre, BoxLess Theatre and Take Two Theatricals’ have co- produced a stunning production of Private Peaceful. It is based on the book by Michael Morpurgo, Adapted by Simon Reade & Directed by Alexander Knott with Zöe Grain, the Associate Director & Movement Director

Set during World War 1 it tells the story of Private Tommo Peaceful. He looks back at his life growing up in the countryside, joining the army and how he got to where he is now.
Emily Costello plays Tommo and James Demaine as Charlie his older brother who Tommo admires.

The acting is brilliant and the staging is stunning with clever lighting. There are funny parts, there are sad parts and then very emotional parts. The whole performance was breathtaking.

Private Peaceful is running at the Barn Theatre now until 4 October. To book your tickets visit: https://barntheatre.org.uk/performances/privatepeaceful

  • PRIVATE PEACEFUL, STARRING EMILY COSTELLO AND JAMES DEMAINE, WILL NOW RUN AT THE BARN THEATRE UNTIL 4 OCTOBER

Following critical acclaim BoxLess Theatre, the Barn Theatre and Take Two Theatricals have announced a one-week extension their production of Private Peaceful. The production Simon Reade’s play adaptation, which marked the first live indoor performances since March at the Barn Theatre in Cirencester, will now run until 4 October 2020.

Based on the modern classic by Michael Morpurgo (War Horse, The Butterfly Lion), Private Peaceful tells the story of Tommo Peaceful as he reflects upon the events that made him the person he is now, from first love to fighting on the battlefield alongside his brother. The intimate production, which is set against the backdrop of the First World War, has transferred into the main theatre space following its sell-out run at the theatre’s first outdoor theatre festival. BarnFest.

Michael Morpurgothe internationally best-selling author of Private Peaceful and long-time supporter of the Barn Theatre, visited the production during its run at the Barn Theatre’s outdoor theatre festival BarnFest for an exclusive post-show Q&A and gave his seal of approval saying, “It was extraordinary, very moving and utterly committed. It didn’t feel like a play at all. It felt like they were telling a story that they really cared about. Really great acting, top notch”.

Private Peaceful is performed by Emily Costello and James Demaine and directed by Alexander Knott with Zöe Grain as associate director and movement director, sound design by Harry Smith (Henry VDaddy Long Legs) and lighting design by Sam Rowcliffe-Tanner (Henry VJust So).

Artistic Director Iwan Lewis said of re-opening, “It’s time to get theatre back indoors and safety is our number one priority! Our team have adapted incredibly to provide the safest possible theatrical experience over the Summer with our outdoor theatre festival BarnFest. Having seen the overwhelming responses from both audience members and critics on how safe and enjoyable their visits were, we are confident that we can replicate and further the same experience indoors. It is fundamental that we maintain this high standard when welcoming our audience members indoors for the first-time following lockdown. Temperature checks, Perspex screens between booking groups, a new seating layout, upgraded air filtration system, staggered arrival times, we are implementing every possible safety measure to ensure that our audiences are provided with the highest quality entertainment in the safest possible environment.”

Private Peaceful is a co-production by BoxLess TheatreBarn Theatre and Take Two Theatricals, with associate producer Thomas Hopkins.
