Soho Theatre is delighted to today announce it has signed a three-series deal for ‘Soho Theatre Live’ with Amazon Prime Video, bringing the company’s signature comedy to Prime Video’s UK audiences from next month. Soho Theatre Live Series 1, available from 3 December, will feature 11 existing comedy films from Soho Theatre On Demand and Series 2 and 3 will each feature 10 new shows, to be announced, filmed and broadcast in 2021.

A charity and social enterprise, Soho Theatre is London’s most vibrant producer for new theatre,  comedy and cabaret. Since opening 20 years ago, it has become the place to see some of the finest comedy acts in the world, ranging from influential early work from many of today’s biggest stars to innovative award-winning and critically-acclaimed shows. Over that time it has regularly been named as the top venue to see live comedy (Evening StandardTime Out).

It’s part of our commitment to connect the work of the brilliant performers on our Soho stages to much wider audiences. Available on Prime Video from 3 December, Soho Theatre Live Series 1 features award-winning comedians filmed at Soho Theatre over the last five years, including Aditi Mittal, Dane Baptiste, Jen Brister, Jessie Cave, Joel Dommett, Josie Long, Lazy Susan, Nish Kumar, Panti Bliss, Rhys James and Shappi Khorsandi.

Soho Theatre ordinarily plays to live audiences of 250,000 a year in its iconic Dean Street venue, at the Edinburgh Fringe and beyond. Since its temporary closure due to Covid-19 Soho Theatre relaunched its online platform, Soho Theatre On Demand globally in Spring 2020 when Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the National Theatre brought back the live recording of the original Fleabag play to both Soho Theatre On Demand and Amazon Prime Video (UK and US) for a limited time to benefit communities affected by coronavirus.

Hope Mill Theatre is calling for any final submissions for its new playwriting prize that launched earlier this year, which includes the opportunity of mentorship with writer Jonathan Harvey for the chosen finalists.

The prize, which has been named Through the Mill, is open to UK based writers over 16 and the winner will receive a cash prize of £5,000 as well as having their play produced by and at Hope Mill Theatre.

Over 200 submissions have already been received, but there is still time to enter ahead of the deadline for entries on Friday 27th November.

Due to overwhelming demand, Sasha Regan’s award-winning all-male take on W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ will run for a second night at the Palace Theatre London

Nimax Theatres have added a second night for Sasha Regan’s all-male take on W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ at the Palace Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue.  The show will now run on Saturday 12th December and Sunday 13th December 2020 at 7:00pm.  News of the run was received on 18th November, W. S. Gilbert’s 184th Birthday year. 

The show’s producers, Sasha Regan and Ben De Wynter are delighted to extend the run.  “We have been inundated with requests for more dates,” explains Regan.  “There is a real demand from theatregoers who are crying out to see Gilbert & Sullivan’s much-loved operetta. Post-lockdown, people want to see something that makes them smile again. Gilbert & Sullivan’s traditional and very funny Victorian comic opera provides the perfect laughter tonic. It’s ideal for families.” 

Despite the current lockdown, theatregoers have not been dissuaded from booking ahead.  “Quite the opposite,” explains Regan.  “We’ve all been cooped up for a long time and families just want to see a Christmas show.  Nimax Theatres have rigorous cleaning regimes and strict Coronavirus rules on social distancing. We are all just trying to keep some of the oldest theatres in London running. I can’t thank Nimax enough for believing in this show and getting behind us.”

The production was first staged at her original 50-seater Union Theatre in Southwark over a decade ago. From day one it became a critically acclaimed overnight hit, winning Best Off-West End production in the 2009 WhatsOnStage Awards. Following several sell-out runs in the UK, the merry band of pirates toured Australia including a month-long run at Cate Blanchett’s Sydney Theatre – a tremendous feat for a small Off West End company.

The ornate Victorian Palace Theatre, originally known as the Royal English Opera House,  was commissioned and founded by the late theatrical impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte and designed by Thomas Edward Collcutt in the late 1880s. Carte who was already producing comic operas at his Savoy Theatre, decided to commission the Opera House as a home for grand operas.  The Royal English Opera House opened 10 years after the Savoy Theatre which championed Gilbert & Sullivan’s well-known “Savoy operas”.  Although their operettas never ran at the Royal English Opera House, it opened in January 1891 with Sir Arthur Sullivan’s ‘Ivanhoe’.  Sadly, Carte’s cherished opera house came under financial pressure leaving him with no alternative but to lease it and eventually sell it within one year of opening.

Throughout his life, Carte managed Gilbert & Sullivan and nurtured their careers including setting up the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. Together these talented men introduced a new way of presenting light opera to families, touring these works to bring them out to the wider community. 

After performing at The Prince of Wales Theatre for the WhatsonStage Awards in 2010, Sasha Regan’s all-male ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ transferred to Wilton’s Music Hall and then moved to The Rose Theatre, Kingston before completing a Number One tour of Australia.  The All Male Company also toured with ‘Iolanthe’ (Critics Choice & Time Out’s top 10 musicals of 2010) which transferred to Wilton’s Music Hall where its sell-out run broke their box office records.  The all-male ‘Mikado’ opened at the Theatre Royal, Bath, before touring to cities including Winchester, Edinburgh, London, Exeter and Salford in 2017 and next year the all-male ‘H.M.S. Pinafore’ is set for another comeback tour which was postponed earlier this year due to Coronavirus.

Chichester Festival Theatre cast reunited for the first official recording of Richard Taylor and Rachel Wagstaff’s award-winning musical, based on Paul Gallico’s novel

On 29 July 2020, the entire Flowers for Mrs Harris cast and orchestra reunited, and stepped once more onto the Chichester Festival Theatre stage, almost two years since the show was performed there, to make this recording. In the grip of the COVID-19 global pandemic, this was perhaps the only such endeavour happening anywhere in the country at that time.’ **

The cast album of the hugely acclaimed musical Flowers for Mrs Harris, recorded by the Chichester Festival Theatre company, will be released on 3 December. With a book by Rachel Wagstaff and music and lyrics by Richard TaylorFlowers for Mrs Harris captures the glowing humanity of the novel by Paul Gallico on which it is based.

Flowers for Mrs Harris is the story of Ada Harris, a char-lady in post-war London whose drab life of dusting and scrubbing is transformed when she glimpses a Christian Dior dress in one of her client’s wardrobes and sets her heart on going to Paris to buy one for herself.

The 2018 Chichester Festival production was directed by Daniel Evans, with a cast led by Clare Burt (who won a UK Theatre Award for her performance), Joanna Riding and Gary Wilmot. Also in the cast are Claire MachinLouis Maskell, Mark Meadows, Laura Pitt-Pulford, Nicola SloaneLuke Latchman and Rhona McGregor.

Conducted by Tom Brady, the orchestra is Jon Laird, Kathryn James, Nicki Davenport, Vicky Lester, Abigail Burrows, Rhys Taylor, Laura Llewellyn-Jones, Owain Harries, Jane Salmon and James Turner.

The recording is produced by Richard Taylor and Mike Walker, engineered by Mike Walker, conducted by Tom Brady and orchestrated by Richard Taylor. It is produced for SimG Records by Simon Greiff.

Flowers for Mrs Harris was first produced at Sheffield Theatres in 2016 where it won three UK Theatre Awards including Best Musical. The Chichester Festival Theatre production opened in September 2018, and was presented in association with Vicky Graham, Joseph Smith and Bob Bartner.

Save A Seat this Christmas to raise funds for Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Birmingham Royal Ballet

AND BIRMINGHAM ROYAL BALLET

This festive season, audiences are being asked to Save A Seat as part of a new fundraising campaign by Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Birmingham Royal Ballet

As the two Birmingham organisations continue their ongoing creative partnership with The Nutcracker at The REP, which runs from 14 – 22 December, audiences are being asked to make a donation to help fill the 50% of seats which will be left empty across all performances to allow for social distancing measures. All proceeds will be split equally between The REP and Birmingham Royal Ballet with the first 500 donations also matched by a generous donor and supporter.  

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many arts organisations being unable to open and perform in front of audiences for over seven months. Since March, over 80% of The REP’s income has come to an abrupt and unexpected halt, however, the theatre’s talented workforce has committed to finding inventive new ways of engaging a diverse spectrum of people and communities. Wardrobe teams have committed to making scrubs for NHS staff, Kitchen staff have provided meals for children in poverty through Open Kitchens and the theatre’s industry-leading Learning team have continued to engage with schools and young people.  

Birmingham Royal Ballet and The REP came together this October to be the first in the city to open their doors and present live performance with the world premiere of Lazuli Sky

Rachel Cranny, Head of Fundraising at The REP said; “2020 has proven to be a trying time for theatres and arts organisations across the country as performances have been cancelled and theatres forced to close. We hope that Save A Seat will enable our supportive and loyal audiences to help us in theoretically filling some of the empty seats left vacant due to social distancing measures. The Nutcracker at The REP will be the ideal opportunity to bring magic and joy to audiences at the end of a difficult year and, with the addition of the Save A Seat campaign, raise some vital funds at the same time.” 

Matt Freeman, Director of Development at Birmingham Royal Ballet said: “The impact of COVID-19 has had a huge impact on Birmingham Royal Ballet. With so much uncertainty, it has been very difficult for the company to confirm plans and performances or to deliver its outstanding and truly life changing education work to the thousands of young people across Birmingham who would ordinarily benefit from this. However, thanks to the generous and ongoing support of our individual supporters, trusts and sponsors we have continued to focus on what is possible. We were thrilled to deliver our first show back at The REP on the 22 October and that this partnership continues with a reimaged version of our classic, The Nutcracker, this Christmas. We are also delighted to partner with them on the Save A Seat campaign. All donations received will enable both organisations to stage other live performances during this uncertain time, and to plan confidently into the future.” 

Arts organisations do not exist in isolation and are part of an industry wide ecosystem, by supporting the Save A Seat initiative, audiences can help to enable both organisations to recover and rebuild. Donations will have a direct impact on both organisation’s ability to stage and produce performances during and after the pandemic, and to offer opportunities to a huge range of freelance staff, artists and participants.

As national lockdown measures continue into early December, The Nutcracker at The REP will provide audiences with a joyous end to 2020. To ensure peace of mind when booking, if performances were unable to go ahead all ticket holders will be offered a full refund. 

In line with current Government regulations, The REP has taken a number of carefully managed steps and precautions to help audiences feel safe and enjoy their chosen performance. The theatre has introduced a series of new safety measures such as socially distanced seating within household bubbles only, hand sanitising stations, temperature checks and additional cleaning. The REP will be monitoring the situation closely regarding government advice around performances in outdoor and indoor venues, with a number of contingencies in place. The priority, as always, will be the safety of audiences, performers and staff.

NORFOLK & NORWICH FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES DATES FOR 2021

Daniel Brine Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Norfolk & Norwich Festival has confirmed that the 2021 Festival will take place between 14 – 30 May. Following its cancellation in 2020, and the continuing worldwide pandemic, the 2021 edition of the arts festival will be a one-off adaptation, with programme and presentation designed especially for Covid-times.

Daniel Brine said: “We, like the whole arts sector, have been navigating the complications thrown upon us by Coronavirus and so I’m really overjoyed to be able to announce that we will be staging a Festival in 2021.”

The Festival, which will mark its 249th year in 2021 usually attracts audiences of around 80,000 for its international programme of music, performance, visual arts and literature in venues and outdoor spaces across Norwich and Norfolk.

Mr Brine explained: “As a Festival, we have no fixed venue, and have been able to be fleet-of-foot, reactive, opportunistic. We have the ability to adapt to a degree, so we have been working to create an exciting, adapted and safe programme for the 17 days next May.

During the pandemic we have been reminded of the value that art has in our lives. People have been listening to music, watching box sets, reading, and streaming theatre to bring moments of respite and connection. We have been doing our bit over the summer, providing support and relief for some of those worse affected through creative projects across the region. But we are all missing the magic, the shared experiences that live art and performance bring us. It’s important that the people of Norfolk and Norwich can have a Festival to look forward to next year and we’re working on something that as many as possible can enjoy.

But it isn’t just about audiences. Delivering a Festival will provide a tremendous boost for the local economy and bring vital employment opportunities for artists, freelance crew and arts workers, all of whom have been heavily affected over the last 8 months.”

The full programme for 2021’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival will be announced in March 2021.

Monday Movers – each Monday 10am to 12pm – is a gentle movement and dance class aimed at people aged 65+ although any age is welcome. The sessions allow participants to develop balance, co-ordination and make new friends.

Each Tuesday from 6.15pm there is an hour of Dance Fitness with Debbie for people aged 16 and over. This is a fun movement and exercise session to music aimed at raising your fitness, your heart rate and your spirits.

Sling and Sway this Thursday (19 November) from 10am to 11am is a gentle movement class for baby and parent / carer designed to get you moving in a safe fun way with your baby safely in a sling or baby carrier.

Friday night is Hippodrome Quiz night streamed live on Facebook with a 7.30pm start with our resident quizmaster Julian. Split the household into teams or play on your own – it’s all just a bit of general knowledge fun.

On Saturday 21 November there’s the opportunity to get the whole family involved in a Dance Taster Session from 12pm to 1pm. Suitable for all ages this session aims to encourage intergenerational fitness and fun through a variety of dance styles, music and fitness. You don’t have to be with a family, this class is for everyone.

For those who love to read there is a Book Club event on Friday 27 November at 10am. Join Cait from the Hippodrome for a relaxed and informal online discussion of the classic Dickens novella A Christmas Carol. If you don’t have the book there are many free versions available online.

The Barn Theatre in Cirencester, the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield and the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich have today announced that following overwhelming critical and public acclaim their digital co-production of Henry Filloux-Bennett’s reimagining of Jonathan Coe’s critically acclaimed satirical novel, What a Carve Up!, has been extended until 2 December.

What a Carve Up!, which marks the first collaboration between the three regional theatres, will now complete its run on the final date of England’s second national lockdown.

The digital production, directed by Tamara Harvey (Home, I’m Darling), chronicles the events leading up to the ‘Winshaw Murders’. Filled with murder, mayhem and madness, the murder mystery turns a satirical eye on what it is like to be a member of one of the most corrupt, powerful and toxic families in the country.

The production features an all-star cast including Jonathan Bailey as Henry Winshaw, Samuel Barnett as Michael Owen, Robert Bathurst as Thomas Winshaw, Fiona Button as Josephine Winshaw-Eaves, Sharon D. Clarke as Kim Bolton, Alfred Enoch as Raymond Owen, Rebecca Front as Hilary Winshaw, Stephen Fry as Patrick Mills, Celia Imrie as Joan Simpson, Sir Derek Jacobi as Findlay Onyx, Griff Rhys Jones as John Stephens, Dervla Kirwan as the Brunwin Advert and Tamzin Outhwaite as Interviewer 2020.

The murder mystery is written by Henry Filloux-Bennett (Nigel Slater’s Toast), based on the award-winning novel by Jonathan Coe, directed by Tamara Harvey (Home, I’m Darling) with sound design and music by Harry Smith (Henry V, Private Peaceful), voiceover editing by Annie May Fletcher and set design by Holly Piggott.

What A Carve Up! is a co-production by the Barn TheatreLawrence Batley Theatre and New Wolsey Theatre with Dusthouse as associate producers.

The play, is available internationally, running until 2 December 2020. Tickets can be purchased at whatacarveup.com with audience members receiving a screening link which will activate on their booked performance date for a 48-hour period. A premium option, consisting of a physical programme and pre-theatre dining recipe card, is available for UK residents.

The recipe card included in the premium option has been curated by world-renowned chef Asma Khan. Owner of the prestigious Darjeeling Express in London’s Soho, Asma Khan was the first British chef to be profiled on Netflix’s award-winning documentary series Chef’s Table and in 2019 was named number one on Business Insider’s “100 Coolest People in Food and Drink” list.

A portion of the proceeds raised by What A Carve Up! will be donated to a freelance fund to support the creative workforce that the theatres would not be able to survive without.

The Prince of Egypt Cast Recording CD Released 20 November
