One of the all-time greatest musicals ANYTHING GOES is making a welcome return to the London stage in spring and summer 2021 for a strictly limited 15 week engagement at the Barbican Theatre, starring Emmy & SAG Award Winner Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) who is making her West End musical debut as Reno Sweeney, and Tony, Olivier & BAFTA Award Winner Robert Lindsay as Moonface Martin.

This splendid production of Cole Porter & P.G. Wodehouse’s classic musical will be directed and choreographed by three time Tony Award Winner Kathleen Marshall. Marshall’s Broadway production of ANYTHING GOES was a major smash hit and received huge critical acclaim. The revival was nominated for nine Tony Awards and 10 Drama Desk Awards, winning Best Musical Revival and Best Choreography at both ceremonies. Now Marshall, in her West End directing debut, will reinvent this glorious musical for London audiences next year.

With music and lyrics by Cole Porter and the original book by P.G. Wodehouse & Guy Bolton and Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse, ANYTHING GOES will premiere at the Barbican Theatre on 8 May 2021 until 22 August 2021, featuring a full supporting company including 14 tap dancing sailors! Further casting will be announced soon.

Megan Mullally said: “Anything really does go, is the thing, and I’m excited to be coming to London where Robert Lindsay and I will promptly unleash ourselves upon that wonderful town for 15 weeks of farce and frolic. Under the tutelage of the devilishly clever Kathleen Marshall we shall endeavour to do the memory of Cole Porter proud. Meanwhile, I will endeavour to get my a** to a tap class. A brand new rendering of a great old entertainment is on the horizon…something tells me I’ll get a kick out of spending my summer in London next year! Tally-ho!”

Robert Lindsay said: “I am so looking forward to returning to the stage in the medium I love – musical comedy. And what better than Kathleen Marshall’s revival of Anything Goes at the wonderful Barbican Theatre. The perfect remedy to shake off the blues of 2020.”

Kathleen Marshall said: “I’m so thrilled to have the opportunity to reimagine Anything Goes for the West End. I’m a huge fan of both Megan and Robert and I know we will have a blast working together on this iconic musical comedy. I adore London and can’t wait to bring this joyous show to UK audiences!“

Howard Panter, producer of The King and I at the London Palladium said: “I’m delighted to be working with Kathleen to bring a wonderful new production of this classic, and very funny, golden-age musical to London next summer packed with Cole Porter’s fabulous songs. It’s an enormous pleasure to welcome Megan to London, as she makes her musical debut in the UK and to work once again with Robert. Originally created by the geniuses that were Cole Porter and P.G. Wodehouse, Anything Goes offers pure escapism and enjoyment for all the family and I really hope it will be the perfect tonic for London audiences next year.“

When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love… proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, a comical disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail. This hilarious musical romp across the Atlantic featuring a collection of some of theatre’s most memorable songs – including ‘I Get A Kick Out of You’, ‘Anything Goes’, ‘You’re the Top’, ‘Blow, Gabriel, Blow’, ‘It’s De-Lovely’, ‘Friendship’ and ‘Buddie Beware’ – will take you back to the Golden Age of high society on the seas. ANYTHING GOES is set to sail away with audiences all over again.

In October, The Hope Theatre was awarded £51,569.00 from the Cultural Recovery Fund, which will enable the venue to reopen in the New Year – further details to be announced shortly.

Although The Hope Theatre doesn’t receive regular public subsidy, it was the first Off West End venue to open with a house agreement with Equity, the UK’s largest performers union, to ensure a legal wage for all actors, stage managers and box office staff working at the theatre. Frantic Assembly launches Ignition fundraising campaign

FRANTIC ASSEMBLY LAUNCHES
FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN TO SAVE
FLAGSHIP IGNITION PROGRAMME

  • FUNDING FOR IGNITION IS CURRENTLY AT RISK
  • A NEW SHORT FILM ABOUT THE PROGRAMME MADE BY FILM MAKER & IGNITION GRADUATE MICHAEL LYNCH IS RELEASED TODAY

Frantic Assembly has launched a new and urgent fundraising campaign today. Ignition, the ground-breaking theatre company’s nationwide free talent development programme for young people aged 16-24, is now at risk.

As arts funding continues to be threatened by the economic impact of Covid-19, Frantic Assembly commissioned Ignition graduate and film-maker Michael Lynch to create a poignant and moving short film about the vital work and legacy already achieved by Ignition since it began in 2008. The film features Ignition graduates from all four nations of the UK.

It will be available to view here from 18:00 today, 19 November.

For the past twelve years Ignition has sought out talent in unexpected places; from sports groups to youth centres, connecting with hundreds of young people from areas of low artistic engagement across the country.

As we look to 2021 and beyond, Frantic asks which doors will be closed and whose voices will be silenced if Ignition can no longer take place?

Donations can be made via franticassembly.co.uk

Scott Graham, artistic director of Frantic Assembly, said: Ignition makes a difference; it has and continues to transform lives, open doors and allow young people to reach beyond what they thought they were capable of. It has sparked careers and creativity that are defining our artistic landscape. I could not be more proud of what we achieve together and could not be more convinced that Ignition needs to keep finding those voices.

Paapa Essiedu, Ignition graduate and actor, said “The ethos, soul and generosity of spirit at the heart of Frantic Assembly was probably the most crucial building block for me as I started my career as an actor. At 18, I’d never done a play. Never seen a Shakespeare. Didn’t know what drama school was. And yet, I knew I wanted to be an actor. Everything that I found initially alienating and unreachable about drama schools and the ‘business’, I found accepting, warm hearted and generous through Frantic. They allowed me to be myself and explore my instincts as a performer in a safe environment. Without doubt, this gave me the confidence I needed to go on and have a go of it in the industry. Forever grateful.

Each year Frantic brings together a diverse and dynamic group of participants, with a focus on ensuring access for those with social, financial, cultural and geographical barriers to the arts. Ignition seeks to unlock undiscovered creative potential and level up the future of British theatre.

The annual programme, which engages over 900 participants across the UK, sees twelve young men and twelve young women selected through taster and trial workshops, who are then invited to London where they spend a week making their own shows with theatre professionals, performed to a public audience. Throughout this period the 24 participants are pushed creatively and physically to understand the process of devising and creating work from scratch. The process is intense, the experience transformational and the effect lasting.

Ignition graduates have gone on to have successful careers with Frantic Assembly, the creative industries and other related fields. However, the programme’s legacy is not just one of vocational success, and this is reflected in Michael Lynch’s short film. Participants forge deep bonds, receive boosts to their confidence and self-esteem, and develop a stronger work ethic through the experience.

In 2019 alone Ignition worked with over 870 young people and in 2020 before the Covid-19 restrictions were introduced Frantic was about to run its first nationwide Ignition programme for women.

The Frantic team work with nine regional partners to deliver more than 50 workshops across the country each year. The partner venues are Leeds PlayhouseThe Core (Corby), The Sherman Theatre (Cardiff), Dance Base (Edinburgh), Lyric Theatre (Belfast), Theatre Royal PlymouthTheatre Royal NorwichOld Rep Theatre (Birmingham) and Liverpool Everyman. These venues lead on recruiting young people, provide expert knowledge on their local areas and continue their engagement with individuals who did not progress to the Intensive stage in order to provide a sustainable and long term arts offer. Frantic also continues to support Ignition graduates. Through the Re:Ignite programme the participants continue to receive training, career development and employment opportunities after the Intensive residency.

Donations can be made on the WE ARE IGNITION page on the Frantic Assembly website: franticassembly.co.uk or by text:

BRAND NEW WEB-SERIES THE VICKY VOX PROJECT TO LAUNCH ON YOUTUBE

“WE’VE ALL GOT TO FIND NEWS WAYS OF DOING THINGS

AND THE JOURNEY’S GOING TO BE WILD”

Vicky Vox

BRAND NEW WEB-SERIES

THE VICKY VOX PROJECT TO LAUNCH ON YOUTUBE

It’s Summer 2020 and the Hollywood-based drag queen Vicky Vox can’t perform live. She can only hug those in her household, which currently consists of the unassuming Bichon-Poodle, Biscuit; a vast quantity of snacks and, of course, her plants. When Vicky’s theatre director friend Tom calls from London with a proposal to create a live stage show, she turns to part-time roommate Paul, currently residing in Vegas, for advice.

With the entire team unable to meet in person, two producers, James and Robin, bring on board comedy writer Beth to begin planning their live return in 2021. Will they be able to create an entire show from scratch without ever once being in the same room together?

This heightened reality web-series, featuring a company of actual real-life creatives, is inspired by a love of live performance, a passion for drag and queer culture and the dilemma we all find ourselves in with Miss Rona. It will offer some insight into the creative process of making a show during a pandemic, with a drag queen, across multiple time zones and explores the artistic vision, design concepts and music creation all while celebrating Vicky’s sentiment that “When the world goes to sh*t, sometimes you gotta celebrate a little harder.”

Producers James Quaife and Robin Rayner of New Frame Productions today said, “Without the restrictions of Covid-19 we’d never have the opportunity to collaborate with these brilliant creative people from all across the world. With the last 8 months being a difficult time for so many in the entertainment industry, it’s also enabled us to reimagine the way we work, opening up new opportunities to defy the rules and reframe our stages.

Vicky Vox is an LA-based drag queen who is best known for her drag band DWV, alongside the world-renowned Detox and Willam Belli. In 2018 Vicky starred as the human-eating alien plant Audrey II in the critically acclaimed Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of Little Shop of Horrors. Vicky recently launched her first podcast series Doing Great with Vicky Vox. She said“2020 is clearly the year that changed everything. Adversity is nothing new in my life. I always find a way to express myself and connect with others. Creativity and art are healing and they will not be stopped! When you find people who support your vision and truly embody that collaborative spirit, obstacles become launch pads to discovery. Necessity is truly the mother of invention.”

Filmed remotely, in isolation, predominantly in the US and produced, directed and edited in the UK, the web-series will be released on New Frame Productions YouTube channel with a live show scheduled for 2021. The series also features Cindy LinPaul Michael Gibbs and Renée Lamb and special star guests scheduled to appear in future episodes.

Bringing Christmas cheer to care homes with virtual performances | Connecting Stars Christmas Gala

Constella presents Christmas Gala in aid of their
Connecting Stars initiative for care home
residents
Available online from Tuesday 8th December 2020

Loneliness among the elderly is a crisis that is only becoming more urgent as Christmas approaches. Earlier this year, the world’s only dedicated opera-ballet company, Constella, launched Connecting Stars to provide free one-to-one virtual performances to isolated care home residents; their upcoming Christmas Gala hopes to raise money to continue their series and meet growing demand.

Their Christmas Gala, filmed in Studio Wayne McGregor, will be presented in two acts with instrumentalists in full costume to propel the gala to new theatrical heights. Act 1 will be framed within the context of Constella’s award-winning and critically acclaimed Sideshows. With introductions from The Ringmaster, their diverse repertoire will include an opera-ballet performance of The Bearded Lady from Sideshows, a highly virtuosic solo accordian performance of Piazzola’s Adios Nonino, music from West Side Story and Habanera from Carmen. Harp and violin duet Olivia Jageurs and Phillipa Mo will perform Heifetz’ Deep River and a beautiful Handel sonata.

Act 2 will see the musicians enter a Christmassy wonderland. A much-loved classic will have enriched meaning in the world premiere of He shall feed His flock like a shepherd from Handel’s Messiah, now choreographed by Jaered Glavin in true opera-ballet style. This will be followed by three excerpts from Nutcracker, finishing with the original treble chorus from Waltz of the Snowflakes

Since the launch of Connecting Stars, over 50 care homes have taken part with nearly 150 performances reaching over 2,000 residents. Loneliness amongst the elderly has long been a shocking crisis in the UK and it’s only exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic this year. By fundraising through this beautiful gala, Constella hope to be able to reach more care homes in future months, as well as provide care homes with this digital gala free of charge for their residents to enjoy this Christmas.

Constella founder, Leo Geyer says, We are proud to have redirected our energies to play our part in the battle against the pandemic. It has been our honour to bring joy and happiness to the elderly combating the pressing issues of loneliness and isolation in care homes. Our virtual performances have become an essential and permanent fixture for many care home residents across the country. We hope that you will enjoy our virtual gala and help us to continue Connecting Stars.

Burwood Nursing Home comments, Our residents really appreciated the audience participation, the great variety of songs, and the fabulous sense of fun. One resident described your singing as “a burst of sunshine”. After the call we had a great discussion about the songs and the amazing expressions and emotions you had
