Gecko extends the tour of its most ambitious show to date, The Wedding, into spring 2018

Ipswich-based physical theatre company Gecko extends the tour of its most ambitious show to date, The Wedding, into spring 2018. The tour includes 8 venues around England: Bristol Old Vic, Watford Palace Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse, Derby Theatre, Cast in Doncaster, Oxford Playhouse, Nuffield in Southampton and Liverpool Playhouse and is one of Gecko’s longest consecutive tours since the company began in 2001.

The Wedding is set in a dystopian world that imagines we are all brides, wedded to society and bound by a contract. Inspired by the complexities of human nature, the show brings these contracts and issues of social cohesion within communities into question. What are the terms of this relationship? And can we consider a divorce?

With the support of the Strategic Touring Funding from Arts Council England Gecko is able to bring an experimental, mid-scale theatre show to the main regional stages around the country and therefore help diversify their programmes, at the same time appealing to and nurturing young and more diverse audiences, inspiring them to be both the artists and audiences of the future.

The Strategic Touring Funding also allowed the company to develop an audience engagement programme that encourages social cohesion between local and migrant/refugee communities through participation as well as increasing audience attendance among these groups at each venue on the tour.

This ambitious outreach programme includes, for example, 3-day training course with one associate artists from each venue (27-29 September 2017), a 2.5-3 residency co-delivered with the associate artists and aimed at young people of migrant or refugee background, free half-day workshop for audiences at each venue and a post-show panel discussion.

Through workshops, residencies, free ticket offer and more, Gecko will actively engage 750 participants around England, some of whom might not be able or inclined to engage in such activity otherwise. This will not only strengthen Gecko’s reputation as an inclusive company with a strong educational status but also foster the development of more diverse audiences around England.

Amit Lahav, Gecko’s Artistic Director said: “For me, The Wedding started as a battle between anger and love. Played out around the complex ideas of belonging, state, exclusion and a longing for community, all set within the excitement and ceremony of marriage!”

“In Spring 2018 we will tour The Wedding to 8 UK venues and there are many reasons why this is particularly exciting tour for us.  Most of the venues we’ll be visiting are new to the company, or venues who we have only recently begun a relationship with.  This is significant because touring mid-scale devised work is notoriously difficult, more so in the last two years, and for us to have so many new relationships shows a real step change in the national excitement around Gecko’s work.  We have also put together a deep reaching participation project around inclusion, exclusion and community, some of the central ideas in the show, which will see the company working in the towns and cities of the touring venues with local young adults, refugees and asylum seekers.  It has become increasingly important for me to find ways to engage communities and certainly to try and reach into the more marginalised areas of society. Enriching the tapestry of the shows content, furthering our understanding of some of the questions raised within the show and bringing some of those human beings into the theatre to celebrate our shared journeys, whilst encouraging more empathy within all of us.”

SIMON RUSSELL BEALE CURATES EVENING INSPIRED BY RAVEL

A B S O L U T E   M U S I C :   R A V E L

On Monday 20 November 2017 at 8pm Simon Russell Beale, actor, author and music historian, will curate the first of a series of evenings inspired by classic works of chamber music.  The first takes audiences on a journey to the Paris that gave birth to Ravel’s String Quartet in F, a city witnessing the dawn of the new industrial age and inspiration to a composer obsessed with factories, machines and mathematical precision.  Russell Beale and others will read passages from Proust as well as poetry by the likes of Wordsworth, Auden and Larkin to paint a rich canvas against which the prize-winning Navarra Quartet will perform Ravel’s exquisite early work. Tickets are £20 and £25.

 

The cast taking part in the evening includes Adjoa Andoh, Simon Russell Beale and Penelope Wilton.

 

Future evenings will be inspired by works including Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8, Mendelssohn’s Octet and Dvořák’s American Quartet.

The multi Tony Award-winning production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s THE KING AND I will transfer from Broadway to London next summer following a critically acclaimed 16 month run at New York’s Lincoln Center Theater and an unprecedented continuing record-breaking sold out USA tour.

Opening at the world famous London Palladium in June 2018, the show will star the two original Lincoln Center Theater lead actors: Broadway Musical Royalty Kelli O’Hara, who will reprise her Tony Award-winning role of Anna Leonowens, together with film star, Oscar and Tony nominee (for his role on The King and I) Ken Watanabe, who will star in the title role of The King of Siam.  Both will be making their West End debuts, following their acclaimed performances on Broadway.

Acclaimed Tony Award-winning Bartlett Sher will once again direct the production, hot on the heels of his work on The Lincoln Center Theater’s World Premiere of J.T. Rogers’ smash hit play Oslo, which opened on Broadway and then transferred via the National Theatre to London’s Harold Pinter Theatre in October this year to rave reviews. He, along with the celebrated creative team behind the award winning production of South Pacific, will reunite to bring this majestic production to life at the Palladium.

With music by Richard Rodgers, book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, THE KING AND I – which won four Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical – will open its European Premiere at the London Palladium. The production will open 21 June 2018 (Press Night on 3 July 2018) for a limited engagement, booking until 4 August 2018.

One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, this masterpiece boasts a score featuring such beloved classics as Getting To Know You, Hello Young Lovers, Shall We Dance, I Have Dreamed, and Something Wonderful.   Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher, whom the imperious King brings to Siam to tutor his many wives and children.

BARTLETT SHER won the Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics’ Circle Awards for his direction of the Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific. He most recently directed the world premiere of J.T. Rogers’ play Oslo which opened on Broadway in July 2016 and has since transferred to London. OPENING AT ALDWYCH THEATRE SPRING 2018

Joining the previously announced Adrienne Warren, who plays the title role, are Kobna Holdbrook-Smith as Ike Turner, Madeline Appiah as Tina’s mother Zelma Bullock, Jenny Fitzpatrick as the alternate Tina, Lorna Gayle as Tina’s Grandmother GG, Tom Godwin as Record Producer Phil Spector and Lyricist Terry Britten, Francesca Jackson as Ike and Tina’s manager Rhonda Graam, Aisha Jawando as Tina’s sister Alline Bullock, Natey Jones as Tina’s father Richard Bullock and Tina’s first love Raymond Hill, Gerard McCarthy as record company Marketing Manager Erwin Bach and Ryan O’Donnell as Tina’s Manager Roger Davies. Directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Katori Hall with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, the world premiere of the new musical TINA will open at the Aldwych Theatre in April 2018.  Performances will begin on 21 March 2018 with press night on 17 April 2018.  Produced by Stage Entertainment, TINA is currently booking to 16 June 2018.

Choreography is by Anthony van Laast, with set and costume designs by Mark Thompson, musical supervision by Nicholas Skilbeck, lighting by Bruno Poet, sound by Nevin Steinberg, projection design by Jeff Sugg and orchestrations by Ethan Popp.  Children’s casting will be announced in due course.

From humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her transformation into the global Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner didn’t just break the rules, she rewrote them. This new stage musical, presented in association with Tina Turner herself, reveals the untold story of a woman who dared to defy the bounds of her age, gender and race. 

 

Adrienne Warren will make her West End stage debut as Tina.  Her most recent theatre credit was in Shuffle Along at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway, for which she received a Tony nomination.  Her other US theatre credits include Bring It On The Musical at St. James Theater, Dreamgirls at the Apollo Theater, which was followed by a National Tour, and The Wiz at Encores City Center.  She has toured and recorded with the multi-platinum selling Trans Siberian Orchestra for which she received her first Platinum and Gold records.  Her television credits include the Amazon Pilot Point of Honor, Orange is the New Black, Blue Bloods, Royal Pains, People in New Jersey, Irreversible andBlack Box.  In March this year, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops.

Kobna Holdbrook-Smith was last on stage playing Laertes in Hamlet at the Barbican alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.  His previous theatre credits include Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead,Edward II, Antigone and Death and the King’s Horseman for the National Theatre, The Low Road for the Royal Court, Feast, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and The Changeling for the Young Vic, Love’s Labour’s Lost for Shakespeare’s Globe and Detaining Justice, Seize the Day and Fabulation for the Tricycle Theatre.  His television credits include The Split, Wagstaffe, Class,Capital, Crackanory, Worricker Trilogy, The Last Panthers and Midsomer Murders.  Holdbrook-Smith’s film work includes Paddington 2, The Commuter, Justice League, Doctor Strange, The Double and Roadkill and the forthcoming Mary Poppins Returns and Ghost Stories.

Jenny Fitzpatrick was last on stage in Boudica at the Globe Theatre. Aisha Jawando is currently playing the lead role in the Hackney Empire Pantomime Cinderella. Her other theatre credits include Martha Reeves in Motown the Musical, as well as roles in Beautiful The Carole King Musical, The Book of Mormon, The Lion King, Fela, Legally Blonde and Soul Sister.

Gerard McCarthy’s stage credits include Cat for the Courtyard Theatre, It’s a Wonderful Life at theBridgehouse Theatre, The Merry Wives of Windsor at Shakespeare’s Globe, Mamma Mia at the Prince Edward Theatre, Saturday Night Fever at the Apollo Theatre and the UK tours of Blue/Orangeand Beautiful Thing. His television credits include Call The Midwife, Puppy Love, The Fall andHollyoaks.  On film he has been seen in A Nightingale Falling.

Ryan O’Donnell was last seen playing the lead role in the touring production of Sunny Afternoonafter appearing in the West End production. His other stage credits include Quadrophenia at Plymouth Theatre Royal, Romeo and Juliet the Royal Shakespeare Company, Victor Frankenstein at the Royal & Derngate Theatre, Tracy Beaker Gets Real! at Nottingham Playhouse, Shadow Mouth for Sheffield Theatres and Stand Tall at the Landor Theatre.  His film and television credits include MI High and Jesus: The Beginning.

Kindertransport – the deeply moving and timely modern classic – celebrates 25 years since the play was written by acclaimed playwright Diane Samuels in 2018 with an anniversary tour visiting the Opera House Manchester from 1 – 5 May 2018.

2018 marks the 80^th anniversary of the Kindertransport, which saw thousands of Jewish children ferried from Austria and Germany to safety.

Set in Hamburg in 1938: nine year-old Eva is forced onto a train by her desperate mother in order to escape the threat of World War II. Arriving at Liverpool Street Station, tagged like a piece of luggage, she’s handed over to strangers.

Manchester 1980: Evelyn, a proud mum, prepares to say goodbye to daughter Faith as she leaves the family home. But what Faith finds in the attic will change her life forever…

This heart-warming play is from the producers of last year’s acclaimed revival of The Crucible. Kindertransport will be directed by Anne Simon and designed by Marie-Luce Theis with lighting design by Nic Farman and sound design by Adrienne Quartly.

Due to huge demand for tickets, the World’s Biggest Pantomime is delighted to announce additional shows in Birmingham and London for PETER PAN – An Awfully BIG Arena Adventure, a stunning new spectacular super-sized Christmas show. The new shows are at 11am on Saturday 23 December at the Arena Birmingham and 11am on Saturday 30 December at The SSE Arena, Wembley.

 

These extra performances are in addition to the seven existing performances at the Arena Birmingham from 20 to 24 December, and four performances at The SSE Arena, Wembley on 29 and30 December. Tickets for the new shows are available by pre-sale Wednesday 15 November and on general sale Friday 17 November.  Tickets are selling fast – book now!

 

PETER PAN – An Awfully BIG Arena Adventure stars Bradley Walsh as Mr Smee, Martin Kemp as Captain Hook and Matt Knight as Peter Pan.

It really is an extraordinary production, the like of which has never been seen before!  It has a life-size galleon, a 25 foot crocodile, plus a cast of over 100!  It’s a big, bold arena extravaganza and a festive treat with something for everyone.”

 

J.M. Barrie’s original story and characters will be brought to life in PETER PAN – An Awfully BIG Arena Adventure, by a cast of over 100 performers, including a thrilling team of BMX riders, stuntmen and trapeze artists, along with a seven metre long animatronic crocodile! 

 

This amazing new show will be performed across three arena stages on a stunning movie-style Neverland set.  The Jolly Roger Galleon will sail around the arena in front of a 10,000-gallon water wall.  From any position in the audience, you are close to the action, with a giant 60 feet-wide LED screen, computer graphic imagery and a live close-up TV-relay ensuring never a moment is missed.

 

PETER PAN – An Awfully BIG Arena Adventure is directed by Jon Conway, designed by Wellington Scenic, with lighting design by Jamie Corbidge and sound design by Dave Shepherd, and is presented by arrangement with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity & Samuel French Ltd.

Strictly Come Dancing fans will be thrilled to learn that TV judge Darcey Bussell, comedian Susan Calman and Double Paralympic Champion Jonnie Peacock will all be taking to the road from January next year for the Strictly Come Dancing Live UK Tour.

 

The 2018 live shows will mark the first time that Darcey has appeared as a judge on the tour and she will join fellow judges Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli. 

 

Comedian Susan Calman has wowed fans of the TV series every Saturday night with her dancing, including her Quickstep to ‘Bring Me Sunshine’.  Jonnie Peacock, the first Paralympian to take to the floor in Strictly history, has blown viewers away with his impressive Jive and Paso Doble.

 

The tour will also see the welcome return of reigning Strictly Champion Ore Oduba as host. More celebrities and professional dancers from the hugely popular 15^th series of Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One TV will be donning their dancing shoes as they take to the floor for the highly anticipated tour.  Further names will be announced in the coming weeks.

Darcey Bussell said: “I had great experiences touring around the UK as a professional dancer…quite a few years ago now! I am really excited to be able to tour again, this time with the wonderful Strictly company. I can’t wait to meet the fantastic audiences that make Strictly the phenomenon we know and love. The tour will open at the Arena Birmingham on 19 January 2018.  It will then visit some of the biggest entertainment venues across the UK, including a return to Belfast at the SSE Arena, following huge public demand.   Other venues the tour will visit include Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena, First Direct Arena Leeds, Manchester Arena, The SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena and The SSE Arena Wembley.  The tour culminates at The O2 Arena in London on 11 February.

A Christmas Carol at Windsor Castle

Casting is today announced for Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol at Windsor Castle. Due to popular demand additional performances have been added for the sell-out run, which will be staged in the Castle’s magnificent State Apartments. Tickets for the new performances are now on sale.

Presented by theatre company Watch Your Head, the family-friendly evening performances of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol will take place in the Castle’s two largest rooms, where the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret performed Christmas pantomimes during the Second World War.

The full cast will include John Kay Steel as Jacob Marley, Edward Halsted as Ebenezer Scrooge, Eleanor Brown as Belle, Charlie Ward as Tiny Tim, Oliver Hamilton as Fred, Michelle Hodgson as Mrs Cratchit, Molly Hanson as Belinda and Marlon Moore as Bob Cratchit.

Tailor-made for Windsor Castle and using Dickens’s own words from his public readings of the classic tale, the production will feature live music and immersive elements, transporting the audience into a Victorian Christmas.  Visitors will accompany Ebenezer Scrooge from the Castle gates to the Waterloo Chamber, where Jacob Marley awaits to conjure his haunting dreams of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.  The cast of actors and musicians performing all around will transform the colossal space into Dickensian London, before the audience follows Scrooge into St George’s Hall to celebrate his new-found festive spirit beneath the Castle’s spectacular Christmas tree.

Monarchs have been celebrating Christmas at Windsor Castle since the 12th century, but it was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert who introduced many of the Christmas traditions that we know today.  Prince Albert is credited with popularising the German tradition of Christmas trees while enjoying the festive season at the Castle, and the Queen and Prince Albert were often seen ice skating and enjoying winter sleigh rides in the Castle grounds.

It was during this period that Dickens first published A Christmas Carol in 1843, and it has remained a festive classic ever since.  The work can be seen in miniature in the library of Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, built in the early 1920s as a perfect replica of an aristocratic Edwardian residence and housed ever since at Windsor Castle.

Their third collaboration with Royal Collection Trust, Watch Your Head’s latest production follows their recently staged immersive performances of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Castle’s Moat Garden.

A Christmas Carol is directed by Sasha McMurray with an original score by Joseph Reuben, costume design by Annina Pfuel, choreography by Edwin Ray and puppetry design by Jeremy Hamway-Bidgood.

ANNOUNCES RETURN TO STAND-UP WITH FIRST LIVE TOUR IN EIGHT YEARS

One of Britain’s best loved comedians, the multi award winning actor, writer, director, author and producer Peter Kay, is finally returning to his most successful hobby, stand-up.

His last tour in 2010, which still officially ranks with the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling comedy tour of all time, played to over 1.2 million people. So why a return to stand-up now?

Peter says: ‘I really miss it. I know how lucky I am to be making television series and have really loved these past few years working on Car Share but I miss doing stand-up. As terrifying as it is, when it works there’s nothing more fun and exciting. Plus, a lot has happened in the last eight years, with Trump, Twitter and my Nan getting her front bush trimmed at the age of 96. I can’t wait to get back up on stage’
