Andrew Lloyd Webber to host a special gala performance of Cinderella with Malala Yousafzai

LONDON – Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit new musical Cinderella is to hold a special gala performance to raise money for Malala Yousafzai’s work to empower women and girls around the world.

With the backdrop of a worsening global refugee crisis, which has interrupted the education of millions of young women, Malala Fund wants those who have lost everything to retain access to the opportunities they need to build a better future.

More than 130 million girls are out of school today and Malala Fund is working for a world where every girl can learn and lead through access to a free, safe and quality education.

The Cinderella gala performance will be held on Monday 22nd November. The show has been donated by Andrew Lloyd Webber and every penny raised will be donated directly to Malala Fund.

Malala Yousafzai: “Since age 10, I’ve been fighting for a world where every girl can learn and lead. But in the past two years, girls in many countries have faced enormous setbacks to their education – from Covid to economic pressures to conflict and displacement. I am grateful to my friend Andrew for all his support, and I want to thank the cast and crew of Cinderella for arranging this special performance to support Malala Fund.”

Andrew Lloyd Webber: “I am an enormous admirer of Malala. She is an extraordinary person and you can imagine my delight when I discovered that she loved musical theatre. Malala and her fund work to empower women and girls to be the best version of themselves and the people they truly want to be. Recent events in Afghanistan, and the worsening of the global refugee crisis, which will be inevitably exacerbated by climate change in the years to come, have brought into sharp focus the importance of Malala’s work.

“We wanted to do this gala performance of Cinderella because our heroine is a strong-willed and mischievous young woman whose lesson is: don’t change to please others. I want to thank everyone who supports this gala and enables us to do more to help women and girls to achieve their dreams.”

National Theatre Live relaunches new programming for the first time since February 2020 with exciting new programme of four productions in cinemas worldwide

The four productions are Leopoldstadt, The Book of Dust – La Belle Sauvage, Hex and Henry V

The National Theatre today announces the return of National Theatre Live with a new programme of four productions to be broadcast to audiences worldwide in cinemas, starting in the UK and Ireland in January, and with tickets now on sale.

The productions are Tom Stoppard’s Olivier-Award winning play Leopoldstadt from Sonia Friedman Productions in the West End which will be broadcast to cinemas from January; Bryony Lavery’s adaptation of Philip Pullman’s The Book of Dust – La Belle Sauvage from the Bridge Theatre in February; Tanya Ronder, Jim Fortune and Rufus Norris’ new musical Hex from the NT will be broadcast in March and the Donmar Warehouse’s production of Henry V starring Kit Harington will be in cinemas from April.

National Theatre Live has been broadcasting to cinemas for almost 12 years, and has sold 11 million tickets worldwide, presenting 88 shows, in 65 countries.

But it’s so great to be able to share theatre as a communal experience in cinemas once again. Since March 2020, National Theatre Live has broadcast in cinemas with special encore screenings of Follies from 2 September 2021 and the NT’s feature film Romeo & Juliet was also broadcast to cinemas from 28 September 2021.

The NT’s next feature film Death of England: Face to Face will be in Curzon cinemas on Tuesday 2 November. The film will then be broadcast, for free, on Sky Arts at 9pm on Thursday 25 November (Freeview channel 11).

Tom Stoppard’s Olivier Award-winning new play Leopoldstadt is a passionate drama of love, family and endurance.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Leopoldstadt was the old, crowded Jewish quarter of Vienna, Austria. But Hermann Merz, a factory owner and baptised Jew now married to Catholic Gretl, has moved up in the world.

We follow his family’s story across half a century, passing through the convulsions of war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. A company of 40 actors represent each generation of the family in this epic, but intimate play.

A unique theatrical performance broadcast live on Saturday 18 December at 5.30pm 

On Saturday 19 December 1981, the Penlee lifeboat ‘Solomon Browne’, was launched in hurricane conditions to go to the aid of the coaster ‘Union Star’ that had engine failure and was being swept towards the southern coast of Cornwall. It was an attempted rescue which ranks not only with the greatest in the history of the RNLI, but with any human achievement. Marking 40 years since the event, INTO THE NIGHT is a unique theatrical performance broadcast live on Saturday 18 December 2021 at 5.30pm. 

INTO THE NIGHT has been adapted by playwright and screen writer Frazer Flintham from Penlee RNLI volunteer and author Michael Sagar-Fenton’s book Penlee: The Loss of a Lifeboat. It is directed by Original Theatre Company’s Alastair Whatley. 

The cast will include: Hubert Burton(The Inheritance), Tom Chambers(Father Brown, Holby City, Apollo 13: The Dark Side of The Moon), Cornish actor Robert Duncan (Drop The Dead Donkey, Casualty, Twelve Angry Men), Cornish actresses Susan Penhaligon(The Mousetrap, A Fine Romance, Emmerdale) and Hazel Simmons, and Tim Treloar (Birdsong, The Haunting of Alice Bowles, Bombshell). The production is presented by Original Theatre Company (the team behind Birdsong Online and Apollo 13: The Dark Side of The Moon) in association with Martyn Hayes. It is designed by Michael Pavelka with camera direction by North South Culture, sound by Dominic Bilkey and music by James Findlay.  

INTO THE NIGHT will be an unforgettable performance remembering the courage, dedication and heroism of the Penlee lifeboat crew. 

Frazer Flintham said: “It can be easy to forget that crew members on lifeboats in the UK are all volunteers. Electricians, teachers, builders – all willing to drop everything to go out into all weathers, and rescue people they’ve likely never met. I was drawn to this story for its humbling and very human reminder, of what bravery can really mean.”

The play, now on it’s 4th UK tour, performed by Mischief had the audience in stitches before the 7.30pm start – try not to be late as you will miss at least 10 minutes of the ‘stage crew’ setting up the stage scenery that quite isn’t going to plan…….looking around our seats and in our bags for the missing dog, Winston, goodness knows where he got to…..

The name of the play says it all really, nothing in the play goes correctly, it’s so much fun, British slapstick humor really at it’s best.

The timing and acrobatics especially from Tom Babbage who plays Cecil Haversham was just perfect, you can really see the amount of rehearsing that has gone into this performance.

The show is a play within a play and has recently celebrated its 7th birthday. Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society are putting on their 1920’s murder mystery show called ‘Murder at Haversham Manor’. The scenes that start to unfold are a mixture of missed, dropped lines, extremely well timed collapsing sets and stage hands that end up becoming part of the show.

Many scenes I likened to watching episodes of the TV comedy series Fawlty Towers, the timing for all the stunts were just so impeccably carried out, without as far as we know, actually injuring anyone!

The other highlight for myself was the 2 females of the show attempting to play the same part (Florence Colleymoore) both Sandra, played by April Hughes and Annie, played by Laura Kirman were just hilariously literally bouncing off each other, amazing personalities.

There’s nothing much like being within an audience where the whole room is belly laughing at what is happening on stage.

Expect some audience participation and heckling too, be careful if you get up to visit the toilet as they will notice and it makes it all the funnier for the rest of the audience.

As it’s half term too currently for some lucky youngsters it’s the ideal opportunity to book and bring them along to enjoy the theatre experience, the show is on in Birmingham until Saturday

Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s emotional and unsettling new play will leave you shaken with its portrayal of early motherhood.

Nina (Sophie Melville) loves her 3 month old son Ben, but after a traumatic birth soon after the death of her mother she is not coping and can’t bring herself to ask for help. Her husband and brother-in-law give her something that she’s been dreaming of – a night to herself – as they take Ben to Pearl’s house for the night. Nina’s friend Jackie (Cat Simmons) comes over for pizza, wine and a catch up. Wine, guilt and exhaustion combine to produce a tsunami of confessions and truths from Nina, as she finally finds an outlet to voice the turmoil of conflicting emotions that come with motherhood. A phone call from Pearl soon turns their world upside down as Ben is rushed to hospital and an investigation begins. The structure of the play fractures along with Nina’s life, and scenes that could be flashbacks, misremembered events twisted by emotions and time or hallucinations intercut with the present.

Director Abigail Graham sensitive direction showcases the astonishing actors and writing. The simple set – a giant cloud mobile hanging above the stage – is lit brilliantly, working with excellent sound design to enhance the tension and confusion.

Morgan Lloyd’s writing is at it’s best during Nina’s descriptions of childbirth and her loss of her sense of self. Melville is devastating as Nina – full of frenetic energy and utterly convincing in her ambivalence, letting slip the things she would like to do to her baby in her darkest moments and the next second overflowing with adoration for him. The early scenes with Simmons are laugh out loud funny as Nina opens up about the reality of motherhood. Simmons is full of warmth as friend Jackie, a health professional, laughing reassuring Nina that all of the dark thoughts she is having are normal, but gently reminding Nina that she can get help. When Jackie has to choose between friendship and what is best for Nina and Ben, Simmons portrays the misery, frustration and professionalism of the character quietly and naturally. Denise Black plays mother-in-law Pearl and Nina’s mother brilliantly. The two are at opposite ends of the maternal spectrum with Nina’s mother honest never missing an opportunity to tell her that motherhood ruined her life, while Pearl is in the smotherhood camp, resulting in David being a man child whose absence from the play indicates his impact as a parent and partner. Pearl’s unconditional love for her son soon turns to suspicion of Nina, and the pair face off in a memorable encounter.

The final scene may be decisive, but it was thrilling to hear so many audience members chatting about their different interpretations of the play’s ending. An emotional rollercoaster of a play, Mum is a funny, devastatingly honest exploration of mental health and motherhood.

American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love… proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, a comical disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail. ANYTHING GOES has music and lyrics by Cole Porter, an original book by P.G. Wodehouse & Guy Bolton with Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse and a new book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman. A statement from Julian Bird, Chief Executive of the Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre, following today’s Budget 2021 announcement:

‘The Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre welcome the support that Rishi Sunak and HM Treasury have shown the theatre sector in the Autumn 2021 Budget.

‘The increase in rates of relief for Theatre Tax Relief from 27 October 2021 to 45% and 50% (for touring productions) will provide producers and investors with greater confidence in developing our world-leading theatre and drive the cultural recovery from the pandemic. The relief will taper down from 1 April 2023, reducing to 30% and 35% and will return to 20% and 25% on 1 April 2024.

‘The temporary business rates relief for theatre buildings in 2022-23, a 50% relief up to a £110,000 cap per business, will provide venue operators with the cushion of a lower cost base as they reopen and develop an audience post-pandemic. The 100% improvement relief for business rates, providing 12 months relief from higher bills for occupiers where eligible improvements to an existing property increase the rateable value, from 2023 will encourage innovation and enhancement of our theatre buildings.

‘Finally, the welcome news that core funding for the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and Local Authorities is set to increase will reassure the venues and performing arts companies up and down the country that rely on their support in delivering culture to their local communities.

‘Over the next few days, we will be analysing the detail of the budget, continuing to work with government to promote the values of this £4.5bn sector as we get greater clarity on all the measures announced today.’

Mark Robert Petty today announces A Musical Theatre Christmas at the Actors’ Church – a one-night only festive concert in the heart of Covent Garden. Featuring festive favourites from the musical theatre cannon, traditional carols, and more, the concert will be hosted by Tom Read Wilson and Dolly Diamond, with musical direction by George Francis and BSL translation by Paul Whittaker alongside a host of West End stars. A Musical Theatre Christmas is on 5 December 2021, with tickets from £30 at: https://actorschurch.org/event/?show=15&id=873621181 and proceeds benefitting The Actors’ Church Benevolent Fund and The Royal Theatrical Fund.

Dolly Diamond has been a drag artist for over 15 years. As well as performing in The Dolly Diamond Show, impersonations include Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Dame Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross and Sia. Other characters such as Carmen Miranda, Liza Minnelli and Cilla Black all make regular appearances in The Dolly Diamond Show, which has toured internationally. She was the Artistic Director of the 2017 and 2018 Melbourne Cabaret Festival, and has had successful cabaret seasons part of Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe, Fringe World Perth, Melbourne Cabaret Festival, Ballarat Cabaret Festival and Broken Heel Festival. She is an Ambassador for Guide Dogs Victoria, Movember, the Children’s Tumor Foundation and the LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation.

Tom Read Wilson is an actor and presenter, best known as the receptionist on Celebs Go Dating. His theatre credits include Sleeping Beauty (Wellingborough Castle Theatre), Alice in Wonderland (Madinat Theatre, Dubai), Cat in The Hat (Everyman Theatre, Cork/The Palace Theatre, Manchester/Hull Truck/Watford Colosseum), in concert with The Fingask Follies (Fingask Castle, Perth/Chelsea Arts Club) and Sweet Revenge (Theatre Royal Windsor).

George Francis is a musical director and pianist. His theatre credits as musical director include Miracle on 34^th Street, Fiddler on the Roof (Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse), Amelie (Watermill Theatre/UK tour/Criterion Theatre), The Wizard of Oz (Storyhouse Theatre); and as assistant musical director, Blood Brothers, The Sound of Music and Flashdance (UK tours).

Paul Whittaker is a deaf musician and founder of Music and the Deaf, a charity to help deaf people enjoy music. He has provided BSL signage for shows such as Les Misérables, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Carousel, My Fair Lady, and more. He has also signed for The Sixteen Choir, Rambert Dance Company, Opera North, and at the Edinburgh International and Aldeburgh Festivals. In 1992, he was awarded a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship, spending almost 2 months researching music among deaf communities in the USA. In 2007, he was awarded an OBE for Services to Music and holds Honorary degrees from the University of Huddersfield and the Open University.

You would think it difficult to review a show, where there is an explicit rule to not reveal any of its contents, but this is not the case with Derren Browns Showman.

In an era where immersion and entertainment, are thought only to be achievable through virtual means, Derren brings it back to the human experience and does so in such an entertaining and poignant way which leaves you buzzing. Surrounded by strangers, by the end you feel the connection, Derren weaves a golden thread which pulls everything thing together but still leaves you with more questions than answers, but that’s ok. With the red lights you’re back in the room, and all is as it should be…or is it?

Derren commanded our attention throughout the 2 hour and 20 minute extravaganza, including interval, with his combination of theatrics and mesmerising word play. Ever the showman, his charisma and charm are not to be confused with the immense skill and thought that has be poured into Showman. Inviting audience members up at random, to partake in his beguiling and bewildering illusions, added to the ambiguity and had you turning to your neighbour asking ‘How did he do that!?’

The amazing creative combination of Derren Brown, Andrew O Conner and Andy Nyman deliver a well crafted and thoroughly enjoyable night. However, I believe, this is perhaps the first of Derren’s shows, where we get a glimpse behind the showman. Sharing his own humanity, Derren’s pathos will have you laughing and crying and leave you wanting more. More from Derren, more from live theatre and more from life.

The takeaway from Showman is that we tend to lose focus, get caught up in the small stuff and miss out on the important moments as life passes us by. One thing I urge you not to miss out on is Showman. Its truly spectacular and Derren doesn’t disappoint as he delivers another hit show.
