Little Shop of Horrors Review

York Theatre Royal – until Saturday 23rd July 2022

Reviewed by Michelle Richardson

York Stage theatre company are once again playing at York Theatre Royal with their latest show, Little Shop of Horrors. This 1980’s horror comedy musical, started off on stage before being adapted to film and becoming a cult classic.

It tells the story of Seymour (Mikhail Lim), a nerdy orphan who works for Mr Mushnik (James Robert Ball) in a waning florist in Skid Row, along with the woman of his dreams, Audrey (Lauren Sheriston). Unfortunately, she is in an abusive relationship with the psychopathic Orin (Darren Lee Lumby), a dentist who loves inflicting pain, both in his private and work life.

Seymour loves tinkering with plants out the back and can’t resist anything unusual. On discovering a new, what turns out to be an alien plant, which he calls Audrey II, his fortune drastically changes along with those around him, but at what price?

Audrey II just isn’t flourishing and nothing poor Seymour does makes any difference until one night he cuts his finger, and the plant comes to life, it has a taste for human blood and a veracious appetite you see. What starts off as a bit of bloodletting by Seymour, soon escalates into Audrey II wanting more and more. How far will Seymour go to satisfy her carnivorous needs?

York Stage truly has a huge wealth of talent and this production showcases this. From the very start with the vocals of Crystal, Chiffon and Ronnette (Hannah Shaw, Lucy Churchill, and Cyanne Unamba-Oparah), you just knew this was going to be a quality production.

Lim has such an innocence to him as Seymour, soon losing that as he is corrupted by Audrey II, but even then, you can’t stop being charmed by him. Audrey II, in all her puppet guises is just phenomenal, a sight to behold, well worth the price of a ticket alone. Talking about the plant, I must mention Emily Ramsden who plays her when she first gets her voice. Her vocals are powerful and bring such a depth to Audrey II and the production, and of course “FEED ME SEYMOUR!”. Shersiton as Audrey reminds me of a Marilyn Monroe character, seemingly a loose woman, but is just vulnerable, accepting the unacceptable and just wanting to be loved, whatever the consequences. Lumby as Orin is truly sleazy and thoroughly horrid, in his skin-tight trousers, you can’t help but be repulsed by him, in a good way. The whole talented cast give their all and are a credit to the theatre company.

Accompanied by a live band, which is always a bonus, but I did find a bit too loud at times, the music and choreography were magnificent and cemented the whole package.

This vibrant production, directed and produced by Nik Briggs, is bold, energetic, and very funny. It’s a great kooky night out and should not be missed. Another hit for the fabulous York Stage Theatre Company.

On another note, I ordered some lucky dip shoes online and received them on the day I went to see the show. They just so happened to be based on Little Shop of Horrors, so of course I wore them. How freaky and lucky is that?

The Monkees Tale Review

Forum Theatre, Malvern – 15th July 2022

Reviewed by Courie Amado Juneau

4.5****

The Monkees Tale is the brainchild of Producer John Hylton from Treble Clef Productions. It is a presentation of the Monkees rise, demise and rise again but told in a deliberately different way with the band’s story narrated by Jimmy Rafelson, “nephew” of Bob Rafelson – one of the Monkees original producers. Jimmy is very entertaining, regaling us with all the germane facts liberally laced with humour and audience participation. Basically it’s a Jimmy segment followed by 3 songs from the band and repeat till the end.

The band were simply fantastic and it was great to hear these classic songs played by, essentially, a classic band lineup.

Matty Murphy (playing Davy Jones) comes from an acting background and it shows as he was able to whip up the crowd and convincingly project Davy’s vaudeville routine – the wiggly legs, backward skating and blazer and boater routine which was always a part of the Monkees (see their Johnny Cash Show appearance). His vocals were strong and he was a real presence on stage, growing in stature as the evening went on.

It was a tad odd to see the bass and guitar roles reversed with Joshua Wade-Scriven (playing Peter Tork, but on the guitar) and Sam Brown (playing Michael Nesmith, but on bass). I tried hard to ignore this but couldn’t quite get past it, jarring my senses every so often – imagine seeing a Beatles band where Paul is playing guitar and George is on bass. To be fair they were both superb musicians and it was a visual aberration only – musically both were spot on. Jody Page (playing Micky Dolenz) was amazing on drums, giving us a powerhouse performance. The band is rounded out by Adam Bridges on keyboards providing all the other parts so that the hits sounded just as we fondly remember them.

The show is kind of like seeing the band in their early days but playing a small gig. I would have liked to have heard more from the band – I understand this was deliberate but perhaps a recreation of the original band’s onstage banter would have been welcome.

At heart this is a celebration of the music and what a songbook it is. The big guns were all present and correct: “Last Train To Clarkesville”, “Daydream Believer” and “I’m A Believer” but it was “Pleasant Valley Sunday” and “(I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone” which brought the house down!

It is not often that people are up on their feet and even less often when people are dancing in the aisles. Tonight there were people dancing down the front, all adding to the fantastic atmosphere of this marvellous show!

I’ve no doubt this show could develop into a classic and improve, going from strength to strength but even as it stands it provided a very pleasant Malvern Friday. I have no hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending this show. Kicks may keep getting harder to find but as Jimmy Rafelson would say “you’ll sure get a kick outta tonight’s show man!”.

Millennials Review

The Other Palace Studio – until 7th August 2022

Reviewed by Alun Hood

Are Millennials massive consumers of avocados? I must have missed that memo (I’m a bit old) but Hannah Benson’s bouncy production is borderline obsessed with the oily green fruit. Avocados feature on the logo, on the posters, there’s a trail of avocado stickers on the floor and on the wall photos all the way from The Other Palace’s foyer into the studio space, there’s a rather striking neon avocado next to the bar… Even the stage itself is a giant avocado half, with a mini trampoline where the stone should be. As far as I could make out (the sound levels are a bit overwhelming, distorting clarity at times) there are even a couple of avo references in Elliot Clay’s lyrics. What can it all mean?

I really couldn’t tell you. What I can safely say though is that Clay has produced a collection of irresistible musical earworms, some rousing, some boppy, a couple reflective, all fiendishly catchy, performed by a sensational sextet of musical theatre talents who shine like stars and sell the material for all it’s worth, and then some. It’s billed as a song cycle which is accurate as there is nothing in the way of plot. There’s not really a running theme, beyond, er, avocados: the title may be Millennials but the lyrics, as far as one can hear them, deal with most lived human experience in the modern world, not situations tied to one age group. Instead there’s a succession of quality pop songs, ranging from joyful to bombastic, anthems to bops, and a series of spectacularly good vocal performances. If the premise and extravagant, colourful tat of the visuals are a bit of a headscratcher, the show as a whole still delivers a rollicking good time.

As the cast aren’t playing traditional characters – the swift procession of songs and moods ensure that there isn’t sufficient time to establish those – the performers’ own personalities, or at least the stage facsimiles thereof, do much of the heavy lifting, and in that respect Benson’s production is on to an absolute winner. Luke Latchman is warm and sexy, Hannah Lowther tempers an innate sweetness with genuine gravitas, Rob Madge is an intriguing combination of Puckish energy and sarcastic edge. Georgina Onuorah needs to be on every casting director’s list of emerging leading ladies (she’d be a great new star for when & Juliet’s Miriam-Teak Lee finally hangs up the white headphones) and a luminous Luke Bayer proves once again why he seemingly never stops working. Hiba Elchikhe gets the lioness’s share of solos, and delivers them with glorious charm and attack. All six voices are remarkable as is the combination of confidence, attitude but sheer likability. Even if the songs weren’t so good (which they mostly are), this cast and Ehsaan Shivarani’s tiny yet mighty band would be worth the price of admission.

There’s also Andrew Exeter’s set, which transforms the space into a ruched pink foil bedecked fantasyland for young adults, complete with a ball pit (multicoloured balls of varying sizes and colours is another recurring visual motif, along with avocados), abandoned bumper car, scatter cushions, beanbags, a ball-filled bath, roving spotlights and neon. It looks rather fabulous, and the post-show Instagram possibilities are apparently endless, even though it seems more appropriate to Gen Z than the slightly older Millennials. Still, the immediacy is refreshing, as is the lack of conventional theatre seating. If it looks and feels a little over-produced, and the self consciousness kookiness of the aesthetic doesn’t always sit well with the heartfelt nature of some of the songs, the glorious cast manage to keep it consistently classy and buoyant, whether whirling through Tinovimbanashe Sibanda’s derivative but expressive choreography or belting their faces off.

Ultimately, enjoyable though it is, Millennials feels like less than the sum of it’s parts. Having said that, I can’t wait to see Elliot Clay bring his prodigious songwriting skills to a fully realised book musical, and I would strongly recommend taking the opportunity to see these six unique performers in such an intimate setting. This show will make a lot of people very happy. Oh and we NEED a cast recording please.

Boeing Boeing Review

Cambridge Arts Theatre, Cambridge – until Sat 16th July 2022

Reviewed by Steph Lott

Boing Boing Press photos © Sheila Burnett

Bernard (John Dorney) is a successful architect living in Paris who thinks he has found the secret to a happy love life. He’s a man who likes to work to schedule and he has three: one for each of his flight attendant fiancees, who all work at nearby Orly Airport for different airlines. Unfortunately, when bad luck strikes, his carefully orchestrated routine of seeing each one without the others knowing is suddenly put at risk.

Thus the scene for Marc Camoletti’s 1960 play Boeing Boeing is set. In his Director’s note in the programme for this production, Michael Cabot, Artistic Director, talks about how theatre requires audiences to suspend their disbelief, and that, as a genre, farce can stretch that suspension to its very limits. And this is the case here. Boeing Boeing is a truly classic farce. It has been revived here by the London Classic Theatre, using a translation by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans.

I found the performances of the whole cast, both individually and collectively, to be very enjoyable.

John Dorney is the polygamous Bernard, and he relies heavily on his long-suffering housekeeper Bertha (Jo Castleton) for his schedule to work and to avoid discovery. It’s delightful to watch Bernard’s rapid unravelling from smug, smooth and patronising, to manically rushing around and tearing his hair out.

Dorney’s portrayal of Bernard contrasts nicely with Paul Sandys’ repressed Robert. Arriving in town from the provinces to visit his old friend, Robert is initially shocked to hear of his friend’s lifestyle. As the hostesses’ arrivals and departures begin to unravel, Robert is hilarious as he humiliates himself with the extreme lengths he is prepared to go to protect his friend’s love life. It was the pauses and alarmed stares between them that had me chuckling the most. I was reminded here of Fawlty Towers and how Polly used to collude with Basil!

All three air hostesses gave great comic performances; the American Gloria, played by Isabel Della-Porta, brash and confident with some very firm views on what role each gender can play; the passionate and whimsical Italian Gabriella, played by Nathalie Barclay, and Gretchen the determined German, played by Jessica Dennis, all allowed us to willingly suspend our disbelief and watch to see how this situation would pan out. Things start to spin out of control; the hostesses are blithely unaware but how long until they find out and just exactly what will they do?

All of the actors above are absolutely brilliant in this fast-paced and slick production, but I think it’s Bertha, played by Jo Castleton, that steals the show. She is fabulous in this role and has spot on comic timing.

Mention must be made of the set and the costumes. Bek Palmer’s vintage costuming of the three flight attendants is a highlight, right down to the tiny details such as colour-coordinated pants to match Gretchen’s Lufthansa uniform. I was also interested to see that Bek also designed the set itself; it’s an enjoyably retro mash-up of space-age futurism; it reminded me somewhat of Space 1990!

This light and frothy French farce is a very enjoyable show to see. I will say however that the stereotypes at play here make for uncomfortable viewing at times. In his notes in the programme, Cabot does make reference to the fact that some of the attitudes in the play may be questionable and that it belongs to another time period and culture. If you can accept that and see past it, suspending your views for a while, then it’s a great piece of entertainment.

Peter Duncan to star in UK Tour of new ghost story When Darkness Falls

PETER DUNCAN & DANIEL RAINFORD TO STAR IN

UK TOUR OF

SPINE-CHILLING GHOST STORY

WHEN DARKNESS FALLS

TOUR OPENS 15 SEPTEMBER 2022

Peter Duncan will star as John Blondel and Daniel Rainford as The Speaker in the spine-chilling ghost story, WHEN DARKNESS FALLS.  Following a successful season at Park Theatre in London last summer and a short tour, there will now be a full UK Tour, opening on 15 September at the Grand Theatre, Blackpool.  The Tour currently runs through to 29 October 2022, with more dates to be announced for 2023.  Written by James Milton and Paul Morrissey, the production will be directed by Paul Morrissey.

On a stormy night on the small island of Guernsey, a young paranormal expert joins a sceptical history teacher to record the first in a series of podcasts based on the island’s incredible folklore and paranormal history.  As the expert regales his horrifying stories, the teacher learns that we all have our own truth, our own story.  Ghosts that haunt us; that bring the past, present and future together in unexpected ways; ways that can threaten to unsettle everything we think we know.

Inspired by true events, this powerful new production by James Milton and Paul Morrissey draws us into dark pasts, reveals disturbing truths and explores the power of stories.  Perhaps most importantly, the ones we tell ourselves.

Actor, film and documentary maker, former Chief Scout and 1980s Blue Peter man, Peter Duncan has a theatre, TV and film career that spans five decades.  Peter began his career on stage, joining Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre.  He became a household name when he joined Blue Peter in 1980.  After TV presenting, he began to appear in musical theatre roles such as Barnum, Bill Snibson in Me And My Girl, Charlie Chaplin in The Little Tramp and Denry Machin in The Card, for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award as Best Actor in a Musical.  More recently, he appeared as Wilbur Turnblad in the UK Tour of Hairspray

Daniel Rainford recently completed a UK tour of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful, in which he played the lead role, Tommo – a role he also played in its original run at the Nottingham Playhouse.  His other stage credits include Once Upon a Time in Nazi Occupied Tunisia at London’s Almeida Theatre.  His screen credits include this year’s The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz.  Rhys Jennings will be the understudy for both roles.

The show’s illusions are designed by John Bulleid, an Associate of the Inner Magic Circle with Silver Star, whose other theatre credits include The Ocean At The End Of The Lane (The National Theatre – associate to Jamie Harrison), Harry Potter and The Cursed Child (Palace Theatre, London – current Magic & Illusion assistant) and The Prince of Egypt (Dominion Theatre, London – associate to Chris Fisher).

Writers Paul Morrissey and James Milton have worked together for the past 15 years.  James is currently Head of Content for the new Holocaust Galleries at Imperial War Museum.  His first book, The Holocaust, was published in 2021.  Paul has written several other plays including BingoThe Wickies and Alcatraz.

WHEN DARKNESS FALLS is directed by Paul Morrissey and designed by Justin Williams, with lighting by Bethany Gupwell and sound by Daniel Higgott.

The UK Tour of WHEN DARKNESS FALLS is produced by Paul Morrissey Ltd, Christopher Wheeler and Molly Morris in association with The BARD, Jason Haigh-Ellery and Glynis Henderson Productions.

WHEN DARKNESS FALLS is proudly partnered with Unexplained Podcast and Richard McClean Smith will be appearing at selected venues where audiences can expect an exclusive live episode of Unexplained as part of the show/ticket price.  Dates to be confirmed.

Unexplained is a haunting story-based podcast in which host and creator Richard MacLean Smith explores a different unexplained mystery each week – often to terrifying effect.  With each episode, MacLean Smith leads the listener on an atmospheric journey through the strange and eerie, taking in everything from bizarre tales of supposed time-slips, vanishings and UFOs to chilling unexplained deaths and dabblings in the occult.

Les Dennis said: “I am so excited to be playing Grandad in ‘Only Fools and Horses The Musical’. Like everyone else, I would tune in weekly to watch the hilarious exploits of the Trotters and would laugh and cry in equal measure. It was both funny and touching. Jim Sullivan and Paul Whitehouse have written a wonderful show that beautifully recreates that feel-good era of British comedy. I can’t wait to join the hugely talented cast and be a part of it. Lovely jubbly!”

Directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, the show has been seen by over 600,000 people since it opened in the West End to an array of fantastic reviews from critics and fans alike in February 2019. The Sun awarded five stars, hailing it “One Del of a show!”; the Daily Mirror said it was “a treat for Trotter fans” in their five-star review; The Sunday Times bestowed

four stars and remarked that “Only Fools is a blast from our wide-boy past. A hearty stage adaptation of the 1980s BBC television comedy”. Evening Standard also awarded four stars, complimenting the “unashamedly British night out. A jubilant lovely jubbly!” While the Daily Mail urged its readers to “raise a glass of Tittinger to Del Boy and Rodney as Only Fools and Horses storms the West End!”
