Today (29 October 2019), as performances begin for the West End premiere of Dear Evan Hansen at the Noel Coward Theatre, producer Stacey Mindich announces a weekly digital lottery with the first draw taking place on Wednesday 13 November 2019.  Patrons who are selected will be offered the option to purchase two tickets at £25 each. It is also announced today that the show is now booking to 2 May 2020, with a new group of tickets now on sale.

The cast comprises Sam Tutty as Evan Hansen, Lucy Anderson as Zoe Murphy, Doug Colling as Connor Murphy and Marcus Harman who will play Evan Hansen at certain performances.  They are joined by Rebecca McKinnis as Heidi Hansen, Lauren Ward as Cynthia Murphy, Rupert Young as Larry Murphy, Jack Loxton as Jared Kleinman, Nicole Raquel Dennis as Alana Beck as well as Tricia Adele-Turner, David Breeds, Haydn Cox, Natalie Kassanga, Hannah Lindsey, Mark Peachey, Courtney Stapleton, Alex Thomas-Smith and James Winter.

Dear Evan Hansen has won the Drama League Award for Outstanding Musical Production and for the off-Broadway production, two Obie Awards, a Drama Desk Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards and two Helen Hayes Awards.  The Grammy Award-winning Original Broadway Cast Recording of Dear Evan Hansen produced by Atlantic Records, was released in February 2017, making an extraordinary debut on the Billboard 200 and entering the chart at #8 – the highest charting debut position for an original cast album since 1961. The album went on to win the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album and recently became only the third cast recording this decade to go gold.  A deluxe version of the cast recording, including six bonus tracks and a pop cover from Katy Perry of ‘Waving Through a Window’ is available digitally.

Dear Evan Hansen opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre to great critical acclaim on 4 December 2016 where it has broken all box office records and is now in its third year of standing-room-only audiences.  A record-breaking US national tour launched in October 2018 and is currently in its second year touring North America.

The cast of Kay Mellor’s BAND OF GOLD gathered on the steps of Leeds Grand Theatre today to mark the start of rehearsals for the stage adaptation of the 90’s TV drama that will premiere at The Grand from Thursday 28 November to Saturday 14 December.

Laurie Brett (EastEnders, Waterloo Road, Les Miserables), Gaynor Faye (Emmerdale, Playing the Field, Calendar Girls), Kieron Richardson (Hollyoaks, Heatbeat), Shayne Ward (Coronation Street, Rock Of Ages, X Factor winner), Sacha Parkinson (Mr Selfridge, The Mill), Andrew Dunn (Dinnerladies, Coronation Street) and newcomer Emma Osman will all star in the production.

Band of Gold was the ground-breaking drama that captivated over 15 million viewers each week when it aired on ITV in March 1995 starring (amongst others) Geraldine James, Cathy Tyson, Barbara Dickson and Samantha Morton. The nail-biting thriller tells the story of a group of women – Carol, Rose, Anita and Gina – as they battle to survive whilst working in a notorious red-light district. RETURNS WITH 2020 SEASON LAUNCHING AT THE TURBINE THEATRE

In February 2019, Paul Taylor-Mills launched the inaugural MTFestUK season which ran at The Other Palace. A celebration of new musical theatre from around the world, MTFestUK is back in February 2020, this time at the new and vibrant Turbine Theatre on the banks of the Thames in Battersea.

MTFestUK will be a central part of the 2019-2020 season at the Turbine, which has already been exciting critics and audiences alike with Drew McOnie’s acclaimed production of Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song, and the current production of High Fidelity, a musical adaptation of Nick Hornby’s bestselling novel, directed and choreographed by Tom Jackson Greaves.

Paul Taylor-Mills, Artistic Director, Turbine Theatre said “We are so thrilled with how the inaugural MTFestUK went, and so excited to be bringing it back for next year, bigger and bolder than ever!

Out of the eight musicals presented earlier this year, at our first festival, five are now in further development or moving towards full scale productions and we are really keen to extend the reach of the musicals we work on and the storytellers who make them.

MTFestUK revels in the diversity of stories on stage and the people who make the work. It sets out to promote quality artistry with a view to showcasing and elevating projects to full production, giving audiences an insight into the process of creating new work and into the art of collaboration.

The festival will promote the best of new British work and at the same time forge overseas partnerships and find new ways to share processes and artists.

MTFestUK is for both industry professionals and the theatregoing public, with an ambition to run the festival every February in the UK and, in time, extend the festival to further territories beyond the UK.

At the centre of the festival is a Taster Menu series of new musicals, each presented as a semi-staged production. Alongside the Taster Menu, the festival will also feature a selection of talks, performances and one-off events including:

Tea For Two – A programme of intimate and afternoon conversations. Paul Taylor-Mills, Artistic Director of the Turbine Theatre, will be in discussion with some of the industry’s most celebrated musical theatre practitioners.

Night Caps – An informal late-night concert series getting to know some of the country’s eminent musical theatre stars through the songs that shaped them, songs they might never get to sing and songs from new works.

Listening to and watching new work is a very personal experience. Ultimately, it’s all a question of taste. That said, here’s a list of helpful notes of what we’re looking for:

• How does your work connect to the present? We want musicals that speak to the here and now and that have something to say about the world we live in. 

• We’re not afraid of ambitious work of scale. The main question we ask ourselves is: does the work move us in some way? Does it make us think, laugh, cry or something else? 

• There are no rules as to how developed or finished a piece needs to be. Previous shows have had a life on Broadway and have been re-written, other pieces had a few songs. We’re interested in ideas and the potential future of pieces, not necessarily how much is done.

RECENTLY ANNOUNCED 2020 SEASON INCLUDES WORK FROM KATHY BURKE, LUCY PREBBLE AND YAËL FARBER, AMONG MANY OTHERS

Stunning new images of the Boulevard theatre have today been released days after the theatre opened its doors to the public for the first time for the London premiere of Dave Malloy’s Ghost Quartet, directed by Bill Buckhurst. The restaurant is also now open from 8am daily. Alongside this is a vibrant late night and Sunday programme including a wide range of jazz, comedy, poetry, and more.

The Boulevard Theatre is located in the heart of Soho in Walker’s Court. Architects SODA studio, in collaboration with theatre specialists Charcoalblue, have designed an innovative new flexible space which features Europe’s most advanced revolving theatre and a two-floor glass bridge leading to a restaurant and bar area.

The Boulevard Theatre’s inaugural production Ghost Quartet will run alongside a packed roster of late-night and Sunday performances.  These will include the West End’s newest female-led improv night THE YES QUEENS curated by Julie Clare with guest performers such as Pippa Evans and Ruth Bratt.  Award-winning comics Kiri Pritchard-Mclean and Nina Conti present the best in established and emerging comedy talent with LATE NIGHT SCENE.   New music night SOHO SOUNDS: JAZZ, curated by the Copasetic Foundation, will feature performers including David McAlmont, China Moses and Vimala Rowe.  Curated by Nadim Naaman, FINALE will feature West End stars such as Natasha Barnes, Fra Fee and Sabrina Aloueche performing stripped back show tunes.  The Black Cat Cabaret will present AFTER DARK, a new cabaret night hosted by Dusty Limits.  SUNDAY SERVICE: CONCERTS will see an eclectic music programme, curated by Katy Hamilton and Benjamin Cox, including iyatraQuartet, the Hermes Experiment and The London Klezmer Quartet.   Artists confirmed so far for SUNDAY SERVICE: POETRY include Inua Ellams, Helen Mort and Richard Scott. THE NEW SEASON
GHOST QUARTET – LONDON PREMIERE

The premiere season of the Boulevard Theatre opens with Ghost Quartet by three-time Tony Award-nominated writer Dave Malloy (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, Octet and Preludes). Bill Buckhurst directs and reunites the creative team behind his sell-out production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, which transferred from a pie shop in Tooting, to the West End, and eventually to a sell-out New York run.

Ghost Quartet is an intoxicating musical of love, loss and spirits – of both the spectral and alcoholic kind.   Wildly inventive, Malloy’s piece draws inspiration from a rich tapestry of work from Arabian Nights and Edgar Allan Poe to Stephen King, Grimms’ fairy-tales, Stephen Sondheim and Frozen, woven together by jazz, gospel, honky-tonk, folk ballads, electro-pop and jazz. Starring Carly Bawden, Niccolò Curradi, Maimuna Memon and 2019 Olivier Award nominee Zubin Varla.

The 2020 season at the Boulevard Theatre begins with the London premiere of multi award-winning writer Cormac McCarthy‘s gripping play about redemption, faith and free will.  The Sunset Limited will be directed by Olivier and Tony Award-winner Terry Johnson (Mrs Henderson Presents, La Cage aux Folles and The Graduate.) Cormac McCarthy’s other celebrated works include The Road, All the Pretty Horses and No Country for Old Men.

Two men meet on a subway platform; the chance encounter instantly changing the trajectory of both their lives.  Thrown together, their conversation quickly turns to the most essential and existential questions facing humanity. While their beliefs seem irreconcilable, the answers they seek could mean the difference between life and death.

The first London revival of The Effect, by award-winning Lucy Prebble (A Very Expensive Poison, ENRON, The Sugar Syndrome), will be directed by Anthony Neilson (The Tell-Tale Heart, National Theatre; The Prudes and Unreachable, Royal Court).

The Effect won the Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Play when it opened at the National Theatre in 2012.  Award-winning writer Lucy Prebble places modern medicine under the microscope, examining the fallout from a collision between love and science.

Connie and Tristan meet; symptoms develop. Racing hearts. Lost appetites. Erratic emotions. Is this the frenzy of falling in love, or simply side effects from the new anti-depressant drug they’re testing? Addiction comes hard and fast. But have the clinicians running the trial lost control?

HELLO AND GOODBYE

Suddenly Hester returns one night to claim the inheritance she believes to be rightfully hers. What begins as the siblings’ search for their legacy quickly becomes a desperate pursuit for truth, understanding and a future free from the shackles of their shared heritage.

THE CAVALCADERS

All his life, cobbler Terry has spent his days tending to his neighbour’s soles. It’s now time for his apprentice to take over, and Terry finds himself handing down two types of keys… In the corner of the shop sits a piano, and come closing time the workers transform into The Cavalcaders – legendary local barbershop quartet.

While the group may be pitch-perfect onstage, they often seem to find themselves tone-deaf when it comes to relationships. In a close-knit Irish community, lives, loves and longings overlap as easily as the Cavalcaders’ melodies, and private lives have never stayed private for long.

Rose Theatre Kingston today announces the full cast for its festive new version of the Hans Christian Andersen classic The Snow Queen written by Ciaran McConville,who returns to the theatre following last year’s successful adaptation of Hansel & Gretel. McConvilledirects a cast of local young actors from Rose Youth Theatre led by a team of professional actors including Helena Blackman (The Snow Queen), Roger May (Dad/Father Christmas), Davina Moon (Freya), Parisa Shahmir (Gerda) and Jack Wolfe (Kai). The production opens on 13 December 2019, with previews from 6 December, and runs until 5 January 2020.

Tucked away in a long forgotten corner of the city is an orphanage. Here Gerda discovers that she is no ordinary teenager, but a Child of Magic, hidden from the reaches of the evil Snow Queen. When she shows her powers to her best friend Kai, she unwittingly reveals their whereabouts. Kai is lured away, and Gerda must journey to the Frozen North into the Queen’s clutches to save him.

Her perilous adventure includes an unlikely pirate captain and a talking reindeer, secretive elves and vicious trolls. As the Snow Queen rallies her forces, Gerda must learn the true nature of her magic powers to save Christmas and rescue Kai.

This Christmas, be enchanted by Hans Christian Andersen’s powerful tale of love, magic and self-realisation. This glittering new adaptation features a wealth of local talent from the Rose Youth Theatre alongside a professional cast.

This special day will showcase four premiere plays written, directed and performed by outstanding emerging talent, who have been empowered by The Mono Box through their PLAYSTART programme. Every penny raised at PLAYSTART: The Fundraising Gala through ticket sales, the auction and donations will help meet the demands of members and support the best of emerging British talent.  

Four emerging writer/director pairs have each completed a 15-minute play, with the support and mentorship of a professional playwright. The Mono Box has provided them with free rehearsal space, facilities to cast actors, a producer and feedback from industry professionals to help them realise their work.

PLAYSTART: The Fundraising Gala will provide an opportunity for these plays to be performed on Hampstead Theatre’s Main Stage in front of a lively, supportive audience and will mark the launch of the PLAYSTART Book published by Oberon Books. The Gala has been kindly sponsored by HN Wines who will be providing a glass of fizz for our Champion ticket bookers on arrival. Expect a live auction of prizes donated including a stay at luxury Hampshire Hotel Heckfield Place, a guided tour of Tate Modern and more prizes donated by theatre royalty led by Tom Clarkson, and musical performances from Rebecca Loudon, Annabel York and Tida Chinyanga.

The Mono Box empowers young writers, directors and actors – and is run entirely by unpaid volunteers, generous artists and industry practitioners. ABOUT PLAYSTART

This is the third year of PLAYSTART, a scheme signalling The Mono Box’s commitment to help support emerging theatre makers. PLAYSTART 2019 pairs four emerging writers with four directors and provides a platform for them to stage a 15-minute play, with the support and mentorship of a professional mentors. They receive free rehearsal space, facilities to cast actors, a producer and workshops with and feedback from industry professionals to help them realise their work.

This year the writers are being mentored by playwrights Phoebe Éclair-Powell, Ella Hickson, James Graham and Vinay Patel. Directors are being mentored by Ned Bennett (Equus, Pomona) and Andrew Whyment (Squint.) This mentorship culminates in a performance on Sunday 17th November at Hampstead Theatre where The Mono Box is an Associate Company. Additionally, all writers will be published first time in The Mono Box’s PLAYSTART anthology, in collaboration with Oberon Books.

This new writing scheme has previously seen participants receiving full length commissions for leading venues, and this year we are aiming for all four 15-minute plays to develop into full productions.

WEST END ‘MARVEL’ MARISHA WALLACE

PLAYS THE PATRICK STUDIO IN 2020

One of the West End and Broadway’s most instantly recognisable voices and beloved leading ladies is heading out on her first UK tour. Marisha Wallace – the sensational star of such smash-hit shows as Dreamgirls, Waitress, Aladdin and The Book of Mormon – will come to Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio on Saturday March 14 2020.

Marisha, who has just completed a critically-acclaimed run in West End hit Waitress and, this summer, starred alongside Will Smith in Disney’s big screen blockbuster Aladdin, said: “I’m so excited to be heading out on my first ever UK Tour.

Dolly Parton is delighted to announce that David Hasselhoff will play Franklin Hart Jnr in 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL at The Savoy Theatre from 2 December 2019 until 8 February 2020.

David will join Caroline Sheen as Violet Newstead, Chelsea Halfpenny as Judy Bernly, Natalie McQueen as Doralee Rhodes and Bonnie Langford as Roz Keith.

David Hasselhoff said today ‘I went to see the show back in June and I thought it was ‘Hofftastic’.  That’s when I knew I wanted to be part of it. Franklin Hart Jnr. is going to be a fun part for me to play and I’m looking forward to being back on stage in the UK’.

David Hasselhoff’s TV credits include playing Mitch Buchannon in Baywatch, Michael Knight in Knight Rider and two series of the International Emmy award-winning Hoff the Record. In 2000 he made his Broadway debut in the musical Jekyll & Hyde. His other theatre credits include Roger De Bris in The Producers in Las Vegas and Billy Flynn in Chicago at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. He has also appeared as a judge on both NBC’s America’s Got Talent and ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent. His film credits include Dodgeball and Spongebob Squarepants The Movie, among many others. David is also a chart-topping recording artist with his album Looking for Freedom going triple platinum in Europe. His latest album Open Your Eyes was released earlier this year and garnered great reviews.  The album features collaborations with a stellar cast of backup musicians.  He has just recently completed a sell-out multi-city concert tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Storyhouse in Chester crowned UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre

The 2019 UK Theatre Awards winners were revealed today (Sunday 27 October) in a lunchtime ceremony at London’s Guildhall.

The Awards were hosted by actor Jodie Prenger, and presenters included Denise Black, Lesley Joseph, Gary Wilmot, Ashley Zhangazha and Tracy Brabin MP.

It was a big day for Sheffield Theatres, whose acclaimed production of Life Of Pi won four awards; Best New Play, Best Director for Max Webster, Best Design and Best Performance in a Play for Hiran Abeysekera. The play, adapted by Lolita Chaktrabarti from the Yann Martel novel, is due to transfer to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre next year.

Another Sheffield Theatres show, Standing At The Sky’s Edge – a new musical about Sheffield with songs by Richard Hawley and directed by Robert Hastie – was awarded Best Musical Production.

Rebecca Trehearn won Best Performance in a Musical for her role in Nottingham Playhouse’s Sweet Charity, with Esh Alladi receiving the award for Best Supporting Performance for Hobson’s Choice at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester.

Theatremaker Emma Rice was honoured with this year’s award for Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre, in recognition of the unique, innovative and socially relevant work she has created during a 20-year career which has included tenures at Kneehigh, Shakespeare’s Globe and her new company Wise Children.

Collecting the award from designer and regular collaborator Vicki Mortimer, she said:

‘Today feels like coming home; surrounded by theatre friends old and new, celebrating what it is to make work with and for communities, and recognising our power as outsiders, as radicals and as rebels […] As others did for me, I promise to use all my strength, joy and experience to keep holding the doors wide open, I promise to pull down the ceilings and to keep defying those pesky unwritten rules that still seem to nag at our industry. If a rule is unjust, break it.’

Five new ‘offstage’ categories were introduced to the UK Theatre Awards this year, to reflect the changing theatre industry. Northern Ballet was awarded for Digital Innovation, York’s Pilot Theatre for Excellence in Touring, Colchester’s Mercury Theatre for Excellence in Inclusivity and Derby Theatre for Excellence in Arts Education, with Northern Stage winning the Workforce Award.
