BONNIE AND CLYDE THE MUSICAL Announced at The Arts Theatre from 9 April

FOR DLAP GROUP

ANNOUNCE THE WEST END PREMIERE OF

BONNIE AND CLYDE

THE MUSICAL

AT THE ARTS THEATRE

FROM 9 APRIL 2022

DLAP Group are delighted to announce that the West End premiere of the cult-favourite BONNIE AND CLYDE THE MUSICAL will open at the Arts Theatre on Saturday 9 April 2022. This brand-new production will be directed by Nick Winston with set and costume design by Philip Whitcomb. Full casting to be announced in due course.

Priority sign-up is open now with priority on-sale from Monday 24 January and general on-sale from Friday 28 January. www.bonnieandclydemusical.com

Following the phenomenal response to Bonnie and Clyde In Concert at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, having sold out in just six minutes, DLAP Group are thrilled to be bringing a brand new full production of the Tony Award nominated show to the West End for the first time.

Emmy Award nominated writer of the book, Ivan Menchell said today, “There is a tremendous love for this show now, and it’s fantastic that it is getting a West End run. The only thing the British love more than Americans on stage, is America’s behaving badly on stage!”

Tony-Award nominated composer Frank Wildhorn added, “The show has built such a wonderful cult following, especially with younger audiences and I’m so excited to see Bonnie and Clyde find its audience here in London!”

Lyricist, Tony and Olivier Award winner, Don Black said, “The show has become so loved by people in the ten years since it was on Broadway. In fact, in one year we had something ridiculous like 60 productions going all over America, so we knew that people liked it – and now our time has come for London.”

At the height of the Great Depression, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went from two small-town nobodies in West Texas to America’s most renowned folk heroes and the Texas law enforcement’s worst nightmares. Fearless, shameless, and alluring, Bonnie & Clyde is the electrifying story of love, adventure and crime that captured the attention of an entire country. The show features the songs “Raise A Little Hell”, “This World Will Remember Me” and “Made In America”.

When Bonnie and Clyde meet, their mutual cravings for excitement and fame, combined with a desperate need to lift themselves out of the endless banality and poverty of West Dallas, set them on a mission to chase their dreams. Their bold and reckless behaviour turns the young lovers’ thrilling adventure into a downward spiral, putting themselves and their loved ones in trouble with the law. Forced to stay on the run, the lovers resort to robbery and murder to survive. As the infamous duo’s fame grows bigger, their inevitable end draws nearer.

BONNIE AND CLYDE THE MUSICAL has a book by Ivan Menchell (Blended [movie], The Cemetery Club, Death Note The Musical), a Tony Award nominated score by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll and Hyde, The Scarlett Pimpernel), lyrics by Don Black (Tell Me On a Sunday, Sunset Boulevard, Mrs Henderson Presents). The production will be directed by Nick Winston (Director of the feature film Tomorrow Morning, MAME, The Royal Variety Performance) with Set and Costume Design by Philip Whitcomb (Atlantis, Stones In His Pockets, MAME).

ROCKY HORROR SHOW REVIEW

PALACE THEATRE, MANCHESTER – UNTIL 22ND JANUARY 2022

REVIEWED BY MIA BOWEN

5*****

Since the first time I watched the movie, I have been a huge fan. So when the opportunity came to see the stage performance, I was elated to be at the Palace Theatre for an encore and standing ovation production!

The Rocky Horror Show is the story of a squeaky clean couple, Brad (Ore Oduba, winner of Strictly Come Dancing) and his fiancé Janet (Haley Flaherty, Mollie in The Mousetrap), who after suffering a flat tyre stumbles across the castle of a mad transsexual Frank-N-Furter, (Stephen Webb), his crew of servants Riff Raff (Kristian Lavercombe), Magenta (Suzie McAdam), Columbia (Lauren Ingram); and ensemble of strange phantom inhabitants. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, a new world of sexual fluidity and gender bending freedom.

For the audience, many of them dressed like their favourite character, this was much more then watching a musical, they were here to be a part of the show! As well as dressing up, audience participation is actively encouraged as fans can interrupt by shouting out smut and innuendos at various parts. Being a ‘Rocky Horror Show’ virgin and never attended a musical with audience participation before, I was not sure of what to expect. But the ever-talented cast of the show bounced off the audience’s good-natured heckling and banter, perfectly. For me the standout among the cast was Philip Franks, as the Narrator, who was able to engage with fans via call and response with well observed topical references to amongst other things, Novak Djokovic and the governments approach to, well, everything.

The real draw for the audience is always going to be the musical set-pieces. They were shining their lights during ‘Over at the Frankenstein Place’, on their feet ecstatically doing the pelvic thrusting, show stopping ‘Time Warp’, myself included and cheering for Frank-N-Furter’s emerge in ‘Sweet Transvestite’.

The cast have an enormous amount of fun as well as the loyal fans who will no doubt return again and again to see their beloved show for many years to come.

The Russian State Ballet of Siberia Review

Hull New Theatre – until 22 January 2022

Reviewed by Catherine McWilliams

4****

The Russian State Ballet of Siberia are currently on a UK tour with a variety of ballets at each venue, and last night at the Hull New Theatre we were privileged to watch The Snow Maiden which was a visual and auditory delight.

The Snow Maiden is one of the lesser performed ballets and the Snow Maiden of the title is based around a character in Russian folklore.

The Snow Maiden (Natalia Bobrova) lives in the frozen forest with her father, Father Frost (Grigorii Botenkov), however, she is not happy and dreams of living in a village. Despite his misgivings Father Frost lets her go to the village of Berendeyevka where she meets a young Shepherd Lel (Yury Kudryavtsev) and falls in love with Mizgir (Georgy Bolsunovskii). Unfortunately, their love is doomed but the ending of this ballet is very upbeat with the villagers celebrating the summer solstice, thus ensuring we left the theatre with a spring in our steps!

The Snow Maiden is a very traditional ballet full of stunning dancing and beautiful music. The synopsis of this ballet by Mark Peretokin is after the play by Alexander Ostrovskiy, with music by Tchaikovsky and choreography by Sergei Bobrov and Mark Peretokin.

The choreography is superb and the dancers take us through a full range of emotions from joy to despair, the dancing is not performed mechanically but with real emotion on show. The dancing of the villagers is a real treat as it is based around traditional Russian dance and in the last act was fast and furious. The costumes, by Sergei Bobrov, are beautiful and are based loosely around traditional Russian costume. Father Frost’s costume was particularly spectacular with the blue shimmering in the lights.

Natalia Bobrova was a beautiful Snow Maiden, her dancing was exquisite full of naughtiness when she was teasing Father Frost, a tenderness as she fell in love with Mizgir and heart-breaking as she faded in the sunlight.

Georgy Bolsunovskii brought an initial arrogance to Mizgir as he searched for a bride but his emotions were clear to see once he saw the Snow Maiden and his dancing displayed raw and utter despair when the Snow Maiden faded away. I was left utterly breathless at times as he soared and turned and his partnering of the Snow Maiden and Kupava (Anna Fedosova) was faultless.

Anna Fedosova was an excellent Kupava, initially delighted to be chosen as the bride, and then jealous as Mizgir began to dance with the Snow Maiden. It was a joy to see her blossom again at the end of the ballet as she fell in love.

The Russian State Ballet Orchestra conducted by Anatoliy Chepurnoy were fabulous, it is always such a treat to have a live orchestra performing for the ballet, it really adds to the experience.

The Snow Maiden is a breathtakingly beautiful ballet, full of joy and despair but leaving you with the clear message that life goes on – perhaps just the message we need at the moment.

Blood Brothers Review

Theatre Royal Windsor – until 29 January 2022

Reviewed by Carly Burlinge

5*****

Blood Brothers was written by Willy Russell and Directed by Bob Tomson and Bill Kenwright. What an amazing production that has you laughing out loud, smiling from ear to ear as well as putting you through a rollercoaster of emotions and bringing you to tears all in one sitting!

Blood Brothers tells the story of the Johnstone twins separated at birth as their mother is on a low income, struggling with money. She decides to give one away, in order to make her life easier! By doing this it means the twins are brought up on completely different sides of the track then reunited unknown to one another that they really are brothers. Causing two worlds to collide bringing much love and friendship along with tragedy, betrayal and hurt.

Mrs Johnstone’s (Niki Evans) portrayal of her character as a single mum is believable and impressive. She shows so much emotion and passion throughout her acting. As for her singing all I can say is just outstanding and sensational ,especially whilst singing Marilyn Monroe and Tell Me it’s not True

The Johnstone twins Mickey ( Sean Jones) and Eddie (Joel Benedict) show a great contrast within their acting from both sides. They become best friends, end up falling for the same girl, all these actions leading them to great calamity. Mickey (Sean Jones) plays the development of his character from child to adult incredibly well through his behaviour and costume changes. He had the audience in hysterics with his energetic and playful acting. His downside is that he finds it hard to talk and show his emotions offering some fantastic acting during these scenes. On the other side, Eddie (Joel Benedict) plays a very refined and gentle young man who is particularly able with expressing emotions and feelings. He supports and encourages his twin even if he’s uncomfortable with the situation, during this time he plays a convincing and remarkable act.

The narrator (Robbie Scotcher) plays an ominous and premonish role always lurking in the shadows, constantly reminding the characters of their fate for their wrong doings. As well as having a great song ‘The Devil’s Got Your Number,’ which he delivers with powerful vocals keeping the audience captivated. He offers a magnificent part; without him the show would be incomplete.

The set was extremely detailed to make it look like a street. One side run down, the other affluent with the back drop of the city lights glinting. This created the perfect mood and atmosphere for the whole show, reminding us of the difference between rich and poor. Props were also used on stage in order to create multiple areas and rooms which gave us more of an insight to all scenes.

This show draws upon raw emotion in all aspects, mesmerizing the audience at every moment with some very theatrical scenes keeping us on the edge of our seats. There was laughter and tears all from the superb talent shown from all actors involved. Ending in a well-deserved standing ovation.

What a phenomenal and staggering performance.
