The Soloists gave good performances and Cody Quattlebaum especially was most commanding and I enjoyed his enchanting performance.

The Narrators again came over very well by I was perplexed by their story line and did not really understand the message that they were trying to get over to the audience.

Whilst the dancers gave us all with wonderful dance moves, I found myself a little unclear why they were there? Jemima Brown brings a magic with her dancing and she moves most beautifully and one becomes entranced.

The music was as ever faultless and the choir numbering around 70 were excellent but I feel that Handel’s work deserved more voices.

The lighting was staged through a central focus in the middle of the stage and I was hoping for something spectacular but for me it only reached a mediocre showing of light images. Nothing said to me wow!

Costumes were convincing but why the dancers were wearing tan coloured under garments that looked like cycle pants I have no idea.

The audience in general I feel enjoyed this performance and there was a standing ovation at the end.

So overall I rate it

⭐⭐⭐⭐ A very good show

However, I wrote in my diary after the show:

“The jury is out for me on our trip to the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane last night to see Handel ‘s Messiah. Impeccable Choir and Orchestra. Notable singers, capable and talented dancers and 2 oddly attired narrators and a strange light production which threw lighting onto a main central feature in the middle of the stage. Did that work for me with the 300 year old music bring dragged into a 21st Century jacket to remodel it. No not at all! it just did not sit well for me and I think Handel would have pulled out all of his hair with concern for his wonderful work being attacked by those who want to change everything just because they can. Lovely experience to visit this majestic Theatre. Oh ‘For unto us is born‘ and the ‘Hallelujah Chorus‘ absolutely fabulous and exactly how, I am sure, Handel would have wished it to be but needed more voices.”

2023 Tour Dates for Roustabout Theatre’s adaptation of Michael Foreman’s Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish

Roustabout Theatre announces the 2023 tour dates

for its acclaimed stage adaptation of Michael Foreman’s

Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish

A wildly imaginative retelling of this environmental tale,

featuring dancing dinosaurs, rock’n’roll, and a whole lot of riotous fun

One man’s passionate dream to find his paradise beyond the stars leaves the world in ruins. Can the dinosaurs who sleep deep underground wake up in time to sort out the mess and save Planet Earth. Expect a riotous hour of dancing dinosaurs, space travel and catchy songs when Roustabout Theatre’s adaptation of Michael Foreman’s classic children’s book, Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish, heads back on tour in 2023.

Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish will play at Imagine Children’s Festival at the Southbank Centre, London (11-12 February), Merlin Theatre, Frome (14 February), ARC, Stockton Arts Centre (24-25 February), the egg, Theatre Royal Bath (18-19 March), Yate Library (25 March), Farnham Maltings (26 March), Taunton Brewhouse (2 April), Grand Junction, London (3 April), The Wardrobe Theatre, Bristol (7-12 April), Greenwich Theatre, London (13-14 April), The Theatre Shop, Clevedon (16 April), The Lowther Pavilion Theatre, Lytham St Annes (23-24 April), Brighton Open Air Theatre (30 April), The Point, Eastleigh (13 May), The Lowry, Salford (28 May) and South Mill Arts Centre, Bishop’s Stortford (30 May).

Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish is created by Roustabout (Luna, This Island’s Mine), and performed by actor-musicians Oliver de Rohan, Robin Hemmings and Shaelee Rooke. It is directed by Toby Hulse.

Michael Foreman’s cautionary environmental tale for children celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, having sold more than 150,000 copies world-wide. The book and theatre adaptation deliver an important message of ecological awareness: the Earth belongs to EVERYONE, not parts of it to certain people but all of it to everyone, to be enjoyed and cared for

Multi-award-winning writer and illustrator, Michael Foreman, said: “When I wrote, and illustrated, Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish in 1972, it was because of the growing threat to the environment. I never imagined the book would be even more relevant more than fifty years later, and I am delighted that director Toby Hulse and Roustabout are bringing it to a wider audience. I saw the show and thought it was BRILLIANT! We really enjoyed it. Sitting there, I felt so proud that my ancient book had played a part in this joyful experience. For me, as an author/illustrator, it was a rare and special treat to feel, at first hand, such a warm and enthusiastic response from parents and children together. Thank you all for bringing the story to life in such a glorious and fun production, I feel deeply honoured.”

Director, Toby Hulse, said: “I am thrilled that, after the roaring success of the first tour, we are able to bring the show to so many more families in so many more venues. This is a book that I devoured as a child, and it’s such a treat to share it with all kinds of brand new audiences.”

Alongside the underlying green message, Roustabout’s signature silliness will abound in this vibrant musical show which promises to have audiences tapping their toes.

Roustabout is proud that this production is sustainable, monitoring its carbon footprint in every area of production including set and costume, travel and marketing.

Originally commissioned as a digital production by Watermans, Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish was shortlisted for Best Theatre for Children, OFFIE Awards 2022. It is produced by arrangement with Penguin Books Ltd, a Penguin Random House company.

Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish received glowing reviews at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2022: “A really fun and engaging family show. I would highly recommend it!”★★★★★ Edinburgh Fringe for Kids; “Will put a big smile on your children’s faces”★★★★ Theatre Weekly

Following 12 hugely successful foreign language productions,
critically acclaimed musical ‘Rebecca’ by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay
is to get its English language premiere in a new production
at London’s Charing Cross Theatre
in an English translation by Christopher Hampton

The hugely successful musical production by the Austrian musical producer VBW (Vereinigte Bühnen Wien) based on Daphne Du Maurier’s 1938 novel ‘Rebecca’ that has captivated more than 2 million people worldwide in 12 countries and 10 languages is to get its English language premiere in a new production at London’s Charing Cross Theatre.

‘Rebecca’, by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, two of the most successful German-language musical theatre composers, had its world premiere at the VBW-theatre Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria, in September 2006, where it went on to play to sold-out houses in three seasons, and where it is currently enjoying a successful revival.

Rebecca will run at Charing Cross Theatre from 4 September – 18 November, 2023.

Rebecca, with an orchestra of 18, will be directed by Alejandro Bonatto (director of the critically acclaimed production of Donizetti’s ‘Rita’ and the upcoming production of Francis Poulanc and Jean Cocteau’s ‘The Human Voice’ at Charing Cross Theatre later this month).

It has a new English translation by Christopher Hampton (two-time Tony Award winner Best Score & Best Book for ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ & ‘The Father’) and Michael Kunze.

Cast to be announced.

Michael was born in Prague and grew up in Munich, where he studied law, history and philosophy. During the 1970s he became one of Germany’s top songwriters and a producer of international hits. New ITV Entertainment Show to find a Sophie & Sky for MAMMA MIA! in London

TAKE A CHANCE ON ME!

BRAND NEW ITV ENTERTAINMENT SHOW SEES HOPEFULS COMPETE TO BECOME MUSICAL THEATRE SUPER TROUPERS IN

MAMMA MIA! I HAVE A DREAM

A one-of-a-kind theatrical competition will launch a nationwide search to find the future musical theatre stars of global smash hit and feel-good musical MAMMA MIA!. Seen by 65 million people around the world, MAMMA MIA! has wowed audiences across the globe and continues to break box office records.

MAMMA MIA! I Have a Dream is a brand-new eight-part series from producers Thames, a Fremantle label, and Littlestar, with the stage set for its arrival on ITV1.

MAMMA MIA! I Have a Dream will search for two ingénues to play the roles of Sophie and Sky in MAMMA MIA! in London’s West End, as characterised by Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper in the two films. Throughout the series, musical theatre hopefuls will be put through their paces as they navigate their way through challenges, masterclasses, and performances.

Filmed against the beautiful backdrop of the idyllic Greek islands, where the original MAMMA MIA! story is set, it will look and feel like no other talent show on television. Audiences will see the contestants mentored by guest industry stars through unique workshops and judged by a panel of well-known industry experts in both music and theatre. Contestants will have the full MAMMA MIA! experience and will get to see first-hand what it’s like to be part of a West End musical.

The competition will culminate in a live, dazzling grand-finale, broadcast from a theatre in London’s West End, where two winners will take it all and win the roles of Sophie and Sky in the musical.

MAMMA MIA! is the sunny, funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads on a Greek island idyll, all unfolding to the magic of ABBA’s timeless pop masterpieces.

The success of MAMMA MIA! has spawned two record-breaking blockbuster films, MAMMA MIA! The Movie and MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again, starring a host of stars including Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Lily James and Cher.

Creator and global producer of MAMMA MIA!, Judy Craymer will co-executive produce the show and will be on hand to help the contestants reach their full performing potential, every step of the way.

Judy Craymer says:  “MAMMA MIA! has always been a show that has encouraged young actors and given opportunities to those making their stage debuts – just as our current Sophie and Sky in London (Meg Hateley and Miles Henderson) are making their West End debuts – so it feels the perfect fit for a TV show that will seek out new talent for musical theatre.

“In the lead-up to the celebrations for the stage musical’s 25th birthday in 2024, we’re really looking forward to working with Thames and ITV on this show and involving our well-loved musical as much as possible in the programme.”

Amelia Brown, Managing Director of Thames, says: “The excitement we have for making this show is like no other – it’s a dream come true for so many of us at Thames. Merging the global brand of MAMMA MIA! and all the talent at Littlestar with the power behind the talent show juggernauts such as Britain’s Got Talent will mean it’s a show that can’t be missed.”

Katie Rawcliffe, Head of Entertainment Comissioning at ITV adds: “MAMMA MIA! I Have A Dream is everything we could want in an entertainment show – legendary music, an iconic West End theatre show, high energy performances, and a brand new search for talent, set against the backdrop of a gorgeous island.”

MAMMA MIA! I Have a Dream is executive produced by Amelia Brown, Charlie Irwin and Ashley Whitehouse for Thames (a Fremantle label) and Judy Craymer for Littlestar. The show is commissioned by Katie Rawcliffe, Head of Entertainment Commissioning at ITV, Lily Wilson, Commissioning Editor for ITV and Louise Major, Commissioning Editor for ITV.

Statement from the Board of Hampstead Theatre regarding future plans

STATEMENT FROM THE BOARD OF HAMPSTEAD THEATRE REGARDING FUTURE PLANS

The Board of Hampstead Theatre today outlines future plans for the theatre.

The ambition is to keep Hampstead Theatre open.To continue to create original theatre without creative restriction. To challenge, influence and shape the future of British Theatre.

In light of Arts Council England’s decision to cut Hampstead Theatre’s funding by 100% and with increased running costs due to the energy crisis, compounded by the post-pandemic world from which theatregoing is only just beginning to re-emerge, the theatre needs to create a new business model.

The plan in the short-term is to:

  • Fulfil its commitment to the season of new plays programmed in the Downstairs space and to reconfigure the main stage and transfer some of those plays to the larger auditorium.
  • Continue the INSPIRE programme to support new writers, currently funded until March 2024 under Roy Williams, which supports up to 15 playwrights annually.
  • To seek significant, immediate support from funders and to applyto Arts Council England for transition funding to see the theatre through this period while it develops a new business model.

In the long-term Hampstead Theatre plans to:

  • Curate a programme of work made up of new and contemporary plays for the main stage.
  • Continue the commitment to presenting new writing Downstairs.
  • Continue to support new writers through the INSPIRE programme.
  • Finance that work through box office sales, philanthropic support, co-production and independent finance.

The success will be to see Hampstead Theatre continue as a creative hub where writers, directors and all theatre-makers can flourish without fear of success or failure. A leading producing house in London’s dynamic theatre ecology, making a completely unique contribution to the London, UK, and the international theatre scene.

The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan Review

Panto season is upon us once again (oh no it isn’t) and this year Darlington has the King of panto, Christopher Biggins, gracing the stage as the Dame of the show.

The show begins with Wendy (Sheri Lineham) returning to Neverland and discovering from Tinkerbell (Tegan Bannister) that Peter Pan (James Hameed) has lost his ability to fly. The reason Peter has lost his ability to fly is revealed to be the Pixie Dust waterfall drying up and the residents of Neverland have to work together to get it flowing again.

As well as Wendy and Tinkerbell, Peter is joined by Captain Hook (Steve Arnott) who claims to have turned over a new leaf and become a good guy, Smee (Rikki Jay) and Starkey (Peter Peverley) who both offer laughs and humour to the audience.  Biggins is clearly the big name in this production, playing Mrs Smee, and the cheers he receives prove this.

Although billed as a family show some of the jokes are very adult and may leave children confused and the original songs slow down the pace of the show, however the Acromanics routine in the first half is entertaining for everyone. The sets are fantastic and show the Jolly Roger ship, Neverland and Peter Pans den.  The highlight of the show is towards the end when 4 children from the audience are invited up on stage to help sing a version of I Am The Music Man with Biggins and each is given a different instrument to play.

An entertaining night out for the family with laughs and plenty of audience participation, this is not to be missed so get your tickets now.

Mother Goose Review

Theatre Royal Brighton – until 11 December 2022 and then on tour

Directed by Cal McCrystal (Paddington, One Man, The World’s End) written by Jonathan Harvey (Coronation Street, Call the Midwife). Six times Laurence Olivier Award-wining  Ian McKellen and British Comedy Award-winning John Bishop star in this sell-out pantomime, originally written in 1902, with much of the action taking place in an animal sanctuary for waifs and strays. In true pantomime tradition, there are plenty of current social and political references, and so the animal sanctuary is placed within a closed-down Debenham’s, and there are plenty of references to ‘The Energy Company’, cast as a baddie.

There are also many comedic references to McKellen’ role as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings, and jokes about Bishop’s Liverpudlian accent, as well as audience participation and references to other productions (such as Les Miserables).

The social and political jokes provided plenty of laughs and enjoyment for the adults, as well as the usual bawdy humour familiar to pantomimes, although this is now skilfully updated for a modern audience.

The audience was a typical Brighton one, and although the majority were adults, goody bags had been provided beneath every chair with sweets and toys inside, which was a lovely touch.

The show was fast paced and included gags for both adults and children. Early on there was a food preparation sketch which reminded me of Bodger and Badger, as the participants ended up covered in food. There were some fine musical numbers, with some of the cast displaying excellent vocal and dance skills. Especially memorable were the Puss in Boots  (played by Genevieve Nicole) and the Goat (Adam Brown), as well as the Goose (West End star Anna-Jane Casey, who sang a particularly fine number reminiscent of Barbara Streisand).

This pantomime managed to combine all the traditional elements of the genre with a modern interpretation of the traditional raunchy and smutty elements, making it a fun and inclusive show for everyone.
