PHOENIX DANCE THEATRE APPOINTS NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Phoenix Dance Theatre based in Leeds today announced the appointment of Marcus Jarrell Willis as its new artistic director. 

Marcus Jarrell Willis, 38, dancer and choreographer, was born in Houston, Texas in 1985. Following his passion for dance, he moved to New York at the age of 16 to study at The Ailey School. He performed with Ailey II and in 2008 joined Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He stayed with the company for eight years, choreographing, teaching and performing in New York and on tour, and participating in outreach work in local and international communities. He has also performed with RIOULT, Dominic Walsh Dance Theater and Tania Pérez-Salas Compañía de Danza. 

He received his first choreographic commission at the age of 23 and has since choreographed dozens of works for a wide variety of companies and festivals across America and Europe, particularly focusing on creating opportunities for young people in hard-to-reach communities. In 2008 he founded MJ Willis/Project-Inc., collaborating with like-minded artists on experimental projects across music, dance and the spoken word. In 2018 he was selected for a Leverhulme Choreography Fellowship at Rambert in London and decided to move to the UK. He was appointed as Resident Choreographer for Ballet Cymru in Newport, Wales, in 2021 and there went on to develop a number of new initiatives including Works In Progress which aims to bridge the gap between mid-career choreographers and venues in Wales.  

Phoenix Dance Theatre was founded in 1981 in Leeds by three young Black British men – David Hamilton, Donald Edwards and Vilmore James – inspired by the tuition they received from one of the UK’s dance pioneers, Nadine Senior (1939-2016) at Harehills Middle School, which famously championed the role of dance in education. It is the longest-standing contemporary dance company outside of London and one of the few mid-scale contemporary dance companies to employ a permanent company of professional dances. Over four decades the company has grown to be internationally respected for creating extraordinary dance that encapsulate the diverse spirit of multicultural Britain. 

From its inception Phoenix Dance Theatre’s story has been one of opportunity, creating pathways for dance artists to perform and be represented, and offering young people the chance to access and experience dance, regardless of background or training. The company’s Learning & Development department is celebrated for inspiring and empowering people through the medium of contemporary dance. Its programmes range from weekly classes to pre-vocational training in the Youth Academies based in Leeds, York, Doncaster, Sheffield, Gateshead and Oldham, to bespoke schools’ packages working on cross-curricular or performance led projects. Phoenix Dance Theatre’s presence both on and off the stage continues to develop and establish diverse new audiences for contemporary dance. 

Phoenix Dance Theatre’s commitment to enabling opportunity is being extended through the professional pathways it creates. Willis will join the company as artistic director on a fixed four-year contract which heralds Phoenix Dance Theatre’s new touring and production cycle and artist development programme.

Phoenix holds such an important place in the contemporary dance landscape of the UK and its commitment to remaining loyal to its roots and fostering opportunity is something I am passionate about. I want to do my best to share this passion and experience with the next generation of dance makers to help to open up new opportunities for them in their futures.”  

Willis takes up his appointment next month. His first global engagement with the company will be in South Africa and marks Phoenix Dance Theatre’s first international performances since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Requiem: Journeys of the Soul is at Artscape, Cape Town, from 12 – 14 October and is a remounting of Opera North’s cross-cultural production which premiered at Leeds Grand Theatre earlier this year. Choreographed by Phoenix guest choreographer and former artistic director, Dane Hurst, Phoenix Dance Theatre and South Africa’s Jazzart Dance Theatre will revive their performances, this time in collaboration with Cape Town Opera and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.  

Phoenix Dance Theatre’s new touring cycle will commence this autumn with a community tour in Leeds. In Spring 2024 Phoenix Dance Theatre will tour to mid-scale venues across the UK with a mixed bill which will include the world premiere of Willis’ first choreographic work for the company. Set in 90s New York TO WONG FOO THE MUSICAL tells the story of 3 Drag Queens, Vida, Noxeema and Chichi, who embark on a trip across America to attend the Drag Queen of the Year Finals in Hollywood. When their car breaks down in Middle America, their lives, as well as those in the town, are turned upside down, in this joyous, heartfelt and high camp musical extravaganza! 3 drags have come to save America, one show tune at a time! The musical was created at The American Academy  of Dramatic Arts where Douglas Carter Beane is on the Board of Directors.

MATT SMITH LEADS THE COMPANY

IN THOMAS OSTERMEIER’S PRODUCTION

OF IBSEN’S AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

David Binder Productions and Wessex Grove today announce the West End production of Thomas Ostermeier’s bold reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, originally produced at Schaubühne Berlin. Making his West End debut, Ostermeier directs Matt Smith as Dr Stockmann, opening at the Duke of York’s Theatre on 20 February 2024, with previews from 6 February, and runs until 6 April.

Doubt spreads faster than disease in Ibsen’s thought-provoking play about truth in a society driven by power and money.

When Dr Stockmann makes an unbelievable discovery about the healing waters in his local baths, he holds the future of the town in his hands, but those with everything to lose refuse to accept his word. As the battle goes beyond contaminated water, barriers are broken in this contemporary production as Ostermeier shows us why this perennial classic will be relevant forever.

Making his West End debut, celebrated director Thomas Ostermeier‘s iconoclastic production of An Enemy of the People premieres at the Duke of York’s Theatre for a strictly limited run.

Matt Smith plays Dr Stockmann. First look at LIZZIE THE MUSICAL

LIZZIE, directed & choreographed by William Whelton, co-founder  of Manchester’s acclaimed Hope Mill Theatre, where the production premieres from 1 to 30 September. 

It will then play regional dates prior to a

York Alive is working with venues throughout the City to bring an exciting and dynamic programme of events this October to theatres,  music venues and pubs.  York Alive is the brainchild of Miles Salter, who ran the York Literature Festival successfully for2008 until 2016.  

‘I’m driven by a desire to see York have a great Arts Festival’  says the author, storyteller and band leader Miles. ‘We have so much to offer. Badging things together helps to raise awareness of the fantastic arts scene in York.’

To celebrate the launch of The Charlie Kristensen Foundation, join Charlie – the 13-year-old multi-award-winning anti-bullying campaigner, stage and screen actor and presenter of #MusicalChairs online chat show – and his West End friends for a sensational evening of performances in There’s No Place Like Home at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, on Sunday 22 October 2023 at 7.30pm.  

Hosted by Jodie Prenger, West End leading lady (Oliver!, Spamalot, Les Misérables) and ITV Coronation Street’s much-loved Glenda Shuttleworth, the show will take a journey down the yellow brick road of Charlie’s imagination, to find the place where he belongs. 

With direction by Dean Johnson, musical direction by Ellie Verkerk, choreography by Khiley Williams and lighting design by Joseph Ed Thomas, There’s No Place Like Home will feature a ten-strong band and guest appearances by top West End stars. The full line-up will be announced soon. 

Charlie is thrilled to be launching The Charlie Kristensen Foundation, a registered charity through which he will share his own story in person to young people and teachers in schools, whilst delivering anti-bullying support and resources which they can also access online. Charlie started his #CheerUpCharlie campaign in 2019. Having been bullied severely for over 18 months, in part due to his love of performing, he couldn’t take any more. When Charlie opened up to his performance coach, West End actress Jacqueline Hughes, she rallied the theatre industry into action. Hundreds of performers and creatives from the West End, Broadway and Hollywood identified with Charlie’s story, inundating him with supportive video messages. Following backstage invitations and national media interviews, Charlie decided to channel his own experiences and the support he’d received into fighting for others, becoming an anti-bullying ambassador. In 2021, he was recognised with The Diana Award – the highest accolade a young person can achieve for social action or humanitarian efforts.   

Charlie now devotes over one hundred hours each month to help others by mentoring, campaigning, fundraising and raising awareness. Highlights include releasing a charity single which he performed alongside West End talent. THE ROYAL COURT THEATRE ANNOUNCES CAST FOR BLUE MIST BY MOHAMED-ZAIN DADA DIRECTED BY MILLI BHATIA

THURSDAY 5 OCTOBER – SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER 2023 

The Royal Court Theatre today announced Salman Akhtar, Omar Bynon and Arian Nik as the cast for Mohamed-Zain Dada’s debut play Blue Mist, directed by Royal Court Associate Director Milli Bhatia.  

Set in the shisha lounges of North West London,  Blue Mistfollows a journalist who sells out his own community, in a candid riposte to the portrayal of South Asian Muslim men in the media. It runs in the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Upstairs from Thursday 5 October to Saturday 18 November 2023. Press night is Wednesday 11 October 2023 at 7pm.  

Blue Mist is designed by Tomás Palmer, with lighting design by Elliot Griggs, sound design by Elena Peña and movement direction by Theophilus O.Bailey.

Chunkyz Shisha Lounge is a home away from home for Jihad, Rashid and Asif, a space where community whispers are heard, jokes are told and new hustles are born. But its future is under threat, having become a target for local politicians. 

Aspiring journalist, Jihad wants to fight back. After winning a competition to produce his own documentary, he sets out to create something that gives a voice to his community and challenges the usual stereotypes that fill the airwaves. 

Will Jihad be able to create something that makes his boys proud? Or will his dreams of becoming a journalist come at a cost too high to bear? 

“A good journalist doesn’t always play friendly. In fact, they mostly don’t”

Blue Mist is a story about South Asian Muslim Men navigating a system that isn’t built for them. Directed by Royal Court Associate Director, Milli Bhatia.

FULL CAST ANNOUNCED FOR THE NATIONAL THEATRE’S MUSICAL VERSION OF ROALD DAHL’S THE WITCHES, PLAYING IN THE OLIVIER THEATRE THIS CHRISTMAS

The National Theatre today announces the full cast for Roald Dahl’s The Witches, a co-production with the Roald Dahl Story Company playing in the Olivier theatre from November. Directed by Lyndsey Turner (The Crucible) with book and lyrics by Olivier Award-winner Lucy Kirkwood (Mosquitoes) and music and lyrics by Tony Award-nominee Dave Malloy (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812), The Witches is a rip-roaring musical version of Roald Dahl’s timeless tale, filled with wit, daring and heart.

Everything you know about witches is wrong. Forget the pointy hats and broomsticks: they’re the most dangerous creatures on earth. And now they’ve come up with their most evil plan yet. The only thing standing in their way is Luke and his Gran. But he’s ten and she’s got a dodgy heart. Time is short, danger is everywhere, and they’ve got just one chance to stop the witches from squalloping every stinking little child in England.

The full cast of 53 is announced today, set to join three-time Olivier-nominated Katherine Kingsley (The Larkins) as the Grand High Witch, BAFTA Award-winner Daniel Rigby (Accidental Death of an Anarchist) as hotel manager Mr Stringer and Sally Ann Triplett (Oklahoma!) as Gran.

Playing Luke’s parents are Laura Medforth as Mum and Richard David-Caine as Dad, playing Bruno’s parents are Ekow Quartey as Mr Jenkins and Maggie Service as Mrs Jenkins, and playing Chef Chevalier at Hotel Magnificent is Irvine Iqbal.

Playing the witches are Julie Armstrong, Chrissie Bhima, Zoe Birkett, Maddison Bulleyment, Miracle Chance, Daniele Coombe, Molly-May Gardiner, Tiffany Graves, Bobbie Little, Tania Mathurin, Amira Matthews, and Alexandra Waite-Roberts.

Completing the team at Hotel Magnificent are Adrian Grove, Jacob Maynard and Ben Redfern.

The cast will be playing multiple roles as part of the ensemble.

Amongst the young cast and playing our hero, Luke, are Bertie Caplan, Frankie Keita and Vishal Soni. Playing Bruno are Cian Eagle-Service, George Menezes Cutts and William Skinner, and playing Helga are Jersey Blu Georgia, Asanda Abbie Masike and Chloe Raphael.

One of Roald Dahl’s most loved stories, The Witches is a brilliant blend of his trademark humour and hair-raising action, featuring one of his most iconic characters, the Grand High Witch. A firm fan favourite across the generations, the book has sold over 11 million copies since it was first published.

The set and costume designer is Lizzie Clachan with choreographer Stephen Mear, music supervisor Nigel Lilley, music director Cat Beveridge, lighting designer Bruno Poet, co-sound designers Alexander Caplen and Ian Dickinson, video designer Ash J Woodward, illusions by Chris Fisher and Will Houstoun, casting director Bryony Jarvis-Taylor, associate director Séimí Campbell, staff director Priya Patel Appleby, associate set designer Shankho Chaudhuri, associate costume designer Johanna Coe, associate wigs, hair and makeup designer Kim Kasim,associate choreographer Ebony Molina,associate music director Natalie Pound andchildren’s and assistant music director Sarah Morrison.

The Witches will play in the Olivier theatre from Tuesday 7 November until Saturday 27 January, with press night on Tuesday 21 November. It is recommended for ages 8+.

Moyo (Chicken Burger and Chips). Tribe explores and celebrates the power and vulnerability of sisterhood and is a love letter to the families we choose.

Filled with movement, music and art, Tribe is creative journey devised with the Beth Centre company through workshops over three months exploring themes of kinship, identity and challenging the status quo of family.
