The Girl on the Train Review

Salisbury Playhouse – until 11th November 2023

We are quickly transported away to the life of Rachel Watson (played by Joanna Van Kampen). R. Watson is immediately the focal character with all her baggage on display for all to see, and it is clear Rachel has a lot. Joanna flawlessly fulfilled the role of Rachel in a scarily believable way, she perfectly matched the emotions of the character pace for pace.

The scenes on the train are perfectly set, using cast members to be other passengers and always having a focus on the relevant characters. They provide the perfect bridge into the next element of the thriller and add time tension to the show with a good use of gripping music.

Kampen’s role of Watson pairs very well with Emer McDaid’s role of Megan Hipwell or Jess.

Watson and McDaid’s lives are intertwined without even knowing it, they share a story that plays them off to be less than their worth and at the end of the thriller they resolve each other’s problems in the most dramatic ways.

The final stand-out performance of the show is Jason Merrells as D.I. Gaskill. He adds some comedic relief to the show when it starts to get a little low. He allows the audience to refocus on the thriller adding in details that make you question every character in the performance. He has a good heart and believes the best in everyone until the end of the seat gripper when he consoles the remaining characters on stage.

The show is high-octane at every step, you follow the lives of the characters gripped to find out the end of the story.

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

What is truth without power?

Doubt spreads faster than disease in Ibsen’s thought-provoking play about truth in a society driven by power and money.

When Dr Stockmann makes an unbelievable discovery about the healing waters in his local baths, he holds the future of the town in his hands, but those with everything to lose refuse to accept his word. Queen of the West End hits the road

Queen of the West End Kerry Ellis on major UK tour

She’s starred in the West End’s biggest roles; now leading lady Kerry Ellis will hit the road for a new UK tour.

Kerry has been the Queen of the West End for more than 20 years, having starred in iconic shows from My Fair Lady to We Will Rock You, and from Les Misérables to Wicked.

Her list of credits is remarkable, and includes Oliver!, Cats and Miss Saigon.

Having conquered the West End and Broadway, collecting numerous awards along the way, Kerry will now take to the road for a nationwide tour, sharing with fans her life and music.

Along with a stellar stage career, Kerry has recorded four studio albums and toured the world as a solo artist and with good friend Sir Brian May.

She said: “I am really looking forward to this tour – I can’t wait to share my stories, as well as perform some West End favourites.

“It will be an opportunity to really get to know my fans – and for them to get to know me – in an intimate setting.”

Singing songs from the biggest musicals and telling stories about how she came to play roles, this is a unique opportunity to see and hear the West End’s timeless hits in a very intimate setting on a tour of the UK. Don’t miss it!

Kerry’s tour, ‘Kerry Ellis – Queen of the West End’, kicks off in Autumn 2024 in conjunction with www.westwaymusic.com . Tickets go on sale on October 27, at 10am, at local venues. See the full tour dates at www.awaywithmedia.com/tours

I, Daniel Blake Review

Stratford East Theatre, Stratford – until 28th October 2023

Reviewed by Bobbi Fenton

5*****

I, Daniel Blake is an incredibly hard-hitting and emotional story, that sheds light on the immense struggle of people who are forced survive on benefits. Made especially relevant by our current cost of living crisis, this story features Daniel Blake (David Nellist), a carpenter who is recovering from a heart attack, and his friend Katie (Bryony Corrigan), struggling single mother to Daisy (Jodie Wild) who is trying to make a fresh start in a new flat miles away from everyone she knows.

This play is nothing short of phenomenal, as we see the characters battle with the mess that is the benefits system, being sent round and round in circles and expected to jump through hoops just to have enough money to live. We watch as Katie sacrifices her own wellbeing, starving herself so that her daughter has enough food to eat, which leads to an incredibly intense scene in which Katie, in her desperation for food after going hungry for so long, rips into a tin of beans outside the food bank, eating the cold beans with her bare hands. All the while, Dan is doing his best to apply for jobs he knows he won’t be able to accept because his doctor has told him not to work, just so that he can get enough money to survive himself. Through the duration of the play, we watch the relationship between these characters move from doing anything to help the other to hiding the truth from one another when they both begin to really struggle.

One part of this play that I loved was seeing and hearing quotes from actual politicians played out loud and projected onto the stage in the form of tweets, all revolving around the topics of work, benefits, or the economy. This is ingenious as it perfectly highlights how especially relevant this play and this story is today, with the current cost of living crisis. One quote, by Damian Green, is used twice as it is him talking about the film I, Daniel Blake. In this quote, he says that he has not seen the film, and says that it is “a work of fiction”. Through using these quotes in the transitions between scenes, even the least politically inclined people would be filled with rage towards the politicians who run the country. I also loved a monologue delivered by Micky Cochrane, as a homeless man. He gives a really harsh but deserved commentary on our current government, and how all they do is create catchy three-word slogans to push their agenda and distract us all from the real issues, as well as commenting on their useless policies that do nothing to actually help people. He talks about the Thursday night ‘Clap for the NHS’ during Covid, and how a nurse finishing the night shift has had to visit a food bank because you can’t buy food with claps. This really shows that this play is not just a piece of fiction, but it represents the real lives of so many people.

Not to forget Janine Leigh and Micky Cochrane’s portrayal of the people working at the job centre. From watching this performance, you can’t help but develop a deep hatred not only for the characters they play, but for the real-life people they represent, which is a sign of brilliant acting.

There are no words that can do justice to this play, it is without a doubt the best show I have ever seen.

And Then There Were None Review

Festival Theatre, Malvern – until 28th October 2023

Reviewed by Courie Amado Juneau

5*****

Agatha Christie continues to thrill us with “And Then There Were None” – which I read is one of her most popular works, despite having neither of her two big hitters (Poirot or Marple) in it.

Ten characters are invited to Soldier Island for diverse reasons. Events unravel rapidly as things are not entirely as they seem and not everyone is being candid about their identity (or past). When the murders start and the significance of the Ten Little Soliders poem in each guest’s room becomes apparent, then the soldier statuettes on the table disappear with each dispatched guest, the madness truly begins.

It’s not often I begin a review with the Set Designer but Mike Britton deserves a lot of praise for producing a space which is substantial and yet leaves much to the imagination. It combines different elements in a condensed space – the painted walls becoming the distant sea at one point, the curtain separates the inside and out and acts like an internal wall but also as a metaphorical cinema screen to the soul (whereupon flashbacks happen). It was hard to tell sometimes where the island ended and the house began, the sloping stage sometimes being inside and sometimes outside the house – giving an even more off kilter effect – a bit like the movie The Haunting with the odd camera angles keeping us on edge and off balance. A perfect setting!

A really hard one to critique without giving the game away – especially when it comes to praising the actors for their individual qualities. That said, I was particularly impressed with Katy Stephens as Emily Brent and Sophie Walter as Vera Claythorne for producing strong women at either end of the philosophical spectrum. Also, Bob Barrett as Dr Armstrong, Jeffery Kissoon as General Mackenzie and David Yelland as Judge Wargrave who all gave performances with impressive gravitas that conveyed the status of their characters. Those who survived the longest obviously got more of the manic stuff to play and impressed the most – but, as I said, no spoilers so…

The entire production had a wonderful cinematic quality to it. The costumes were lavish and there was clever use of lighting and music to evoke atmosphere and ramp up the intense claustrophobia and unseen menace. The darkness was almost a character in its own right. Every element added to the overall impression of a production that has benefited from the expertise of a very talented team.

Lucy Bailey’s fine directing give us a compelling reading of this Christie classic, with a contemporary feel even though it was authentically set in the original 1939 – quite a masterstroke! Every last drop of everything was wrung out of the actors and nothing was left in the rehearsal room. Truly impressive.

The play had a natural crescendo – the second half especially really flew by like a runaway train with no brakes. The set became more strewn with debris as the remaining characters descended into the madness, anxiety, guilt, suspicion etc… Until the truly shocking ending. In a word – brilliant.

The Queen of Crime given the right royal treatment. I would wholeheartedly recommend getting yourself a ticket now. Don’t kick yourself later after leaving it until there were none.
