Robert HastieArtistic Director of Sheffield Theatres, said: “It has been an honour to lead this wonderful group of theatres for the last eight years, and to work alongside such a committed, talented and kind collection of people. There is nowhere like it – the range of theatre spaces, and the multiplicity of local and national relationships Sheffield Theatres enjoys, make this place a whole cultural ecosystem, and it’s been a joy and an education to work at its heart. The bumper season we announce today reflects the variety and quality of great nights out and opportunities to join in that our audiences rightly expect of us.

I have loved working here. I will miss crossing Tudor Square and bumping into actors on a break from rehearsal, young artists on their way to an R&D workshop in our Talent Development space, lines of schoolkids queuing noisily for a matinee in the Lyceum, passers-by keen to stop me and tell me what they thought of last night’s show in the Crucible. The immense privilege of working in a city that loves its theatre is something I will never forget. Every time I’ve introduced a new director, actor or designer to our stages, it has been with an enormous sense of pride in the warm welcome I know they’ll receive from our staff and audiences. It’s inspired me to programme adventurously and eclectically, to invite world-class talent whose work I admire, to make productions of my own that I’m hugely proud of, and to dedicate resources to nurturing the next generation of local artists who are already beginning to make their presences felt on stages in Sheffield and beyond. Above all to see no useful distinction between the value we place on work that connects with our local neighbourhoods and that which achieves national and international acclaim. I’ve had the great good fortune to have been supported in all these endeavours by a dedicated board of trustees chaired by the great, much-missed Bob Kerslake, and by successive Chief Execs Dan Bates and Tom Bird and Deputy CEO Bookey Oshin, true champions of the theatre who have taught me so much about compassionate leadership, and who have become dear friends. I’m beyond excited to see where Tom and the splendid senior team take the theatres next, as they begin the search for a lucky Artistic Director who is about to discover that this is one of the best jobs in British Theatre.

For now, I’m looking forward to a thrilling final season that mixes bold new voices with global classics, risk-taking work for younger audiences with innovative new musical theatre, and family entertainment with chances to get involved in an inclusive participatory programme. I’m delighted to fire the starting pistol with a new production of Chariots of Fire, adapted by Mike Bartlett from the iconic film about the Paris 1924 Olympic Games, as we countdown to Paris 2024. It will be an epic way to say goodbye to the stage – the best of its kind in the country – that I’ve been lucky to call home for the last eight years.”

Tom Bird, Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres, said: “Rob’s contribution to Sheffield over the past 8 years has been colossal. He has brought to Sheffield Theatres a rare combination of electrifying ambition mixed with a warm and humble personality. Rob’s achievements here are too many to mention in full, but they range from the intrepid ROCK / PAPER / SCISSORS, to the deeply human The York Realist, to a gorgeous Guys and Dolls. With Standing at the Sky’s Edge, he led the team that crafted a theatrical holy grail: a show that simultaneously empowers a specific place and achieves astonishing commercial success elsewhere. In line with the values of craftsmanship and friendliness that Sheffield holds dear, Rob is both a master of his art, and absolutely lovely with it. He leaves these theatres in rude health, and the city with an even bigger heart.“

Robert Hastie joined Sheffield Theatres as Artistic Director in July 2016, having previously started his career as an actor by performing on the Crucible stage in Edward Bond’s Lear. His time in post has seen Sheffield Theatres produce 72 new productions and welcome hundreds of guest productions across its three auditoria. Theatre made in in the city has been experienced by hundreds of thousands of audience members, in Sheffield and around the world.

Hastie’s tenure has enhanced the organisation’s reputation for being a top producer of new work. The last eight years have seen several landmark productions that have gone from sold-out runs in Sheffield to successful futures in the West End and beyond. Standing at the Sky’s Edge, first staged in 2019 and revived in co-production with the National Theatre in 2022 transferred to the Olivier and then to the Gillian Lynne (co-produced by Various Productions), where it recently opened to stellar reviews, carrying multiple awards in its wake. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (2017) and Life of Pi (2019) both started life at the Crucible before moving on to the West End and major UK tours with commercial producers; Pi subsequently crossed the Atlantic to Broadway, and Jamie became a feature film distributed by Amazon in 2021. Last year Sheffield Theatres’ production of Accidental Death of an Anarchist transferred to the Lyric Hammersmith and then into the Theatre Royal Haymarket, featuring an award-winning performance from regular Sheffield Theatres leading actor Daniel Rigby.

During Hastie’s leadership, shows started in Sheffield have collected a total of 9 UK Theatre Awards, 7 Olivier Awards, 3 Tony Awards and 3 Stage Debut Awards, and Sheffield Theatres has twice been named Theatre of the Year by the Stage, as well as winning the Stage Award for Achievement in Technical Theatre. In addition to UK Theatre and Olivier Awards, Standing at the Sky’s Edge won the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Theatre, and was presented with an honorary degree by Sheffield Hallam University.

His first season began with his own acclaimed production of Julius Caesar (2017), which transformed the Crucible auditorium into the Roman Senate; he followed this up with a companion piece, Coriolanus, with Tom Bateman (2020). As well as Shakespeare, Hastie’s programming for Sheffield Theatres has included plays by Moliere, Brecht, Ibsen, Chekhov, Miller, Sowerby and Tolstoy; the regional premieres of modern classics by Caryl Churchill, Nina Raine, debbie tucker green and Peter Morgan; and major musical revivals of The Wizard of Oz, Kiss Me Kate, Guys and Dolls, She Loves Me and White Christmas. Hastie’s production of The York Realist starring Jonathan Bailey and Lesley Nicol, co-produced with the Donmar Warehouse in 2018, earned an Evening Standard Award nomination for Best Director. Other co-productions have included work with Theatr Clywd, ETT, Paines Plough, Clean Break, the Unicorn, Lyric Hammersmith, the Bush, Stockroom and Theatre Centre, with whom Sheffield Theatres annually produces a new play for young audiences which tours schools across the UK. Especially important have been the producing partnerships developed with Sheffield-based companies Utopia Theatre and Roots Mbili.

New work has been a central strand of Hastie’s tenure, with world premieres or new adaptations from writers including Chris Thompson, Peter Gill, Lolita Chakrabarti, Kate Bowen, April de Angelis, Chloe Moss, Oladipo Agboluaje, Steve Waters, Ryan Calais Cameron, Kieran Knowles, Ray Castleton, John Rwothomack, Charlie Josephine, Tom Basden, Nina Segal, Eve Leigh and Hannah Morley. A key relationship throughout has been with Chris Bush, appointed by Hastie as an Associate Artist of Sheffield Theatres, who has worked extensively across all three stages with professional and community companies. Following several large-scale Sheffield People’s Theatre projects, Hastie commissioned her first full length play for professional performers, Steel, which was directed by Rebecca Frecknall in 2018. This was followed by Standing at the Sky’s Edge (2019), lockdown musical The Band Plays On (2021), and the ambitious trilogy ROCK / PAPER / SCISSORS (2022). Commissioned as the centrepiece of the Crucible’s 50th anniversary season in 2022, these three plays by Bush were performed simultaneously in the Crucible, Lyceum and Playhouse in a theatrical first that saw cast members racing between venues.

Hastie collaborated on this epic undertaking with co-directors Elin Schofield, one of the first directors in The Bank Supported Artists programme, and Anthony Lau, with whom he has enjoyed a close working relationship since his appointment as Associate Artistic Director in 2020. The three were named joint Best Directors at the UK Theatre Awards in 2023. Hastie and Lau also shared directing duties on the first major reimagining of Boublil and Schönberg’s Miss Saigon, in 2023. Hastie and Sheffield Theatres have also benefitted from the work and support of Artistic Associates Caroline Steinbeis and Wendy Spon, Resident Associate Director Javaad Alipoor, and returning directors Mojisola Kareem, Paul Foster and Kate Hewitt, casting director Stuart Burt and designing artists Ben Stones, Janet Bird, Jessica Hung Han Yun, Mike Walker and Georgia Lowe, along with the talents of so many brilliant casts and creative teams.

Beyond the stages, talent development has flourished, most especially with the opening of The Bank in 2019, a new space dedicated to nurturing local artists, generously enabled by a donation from Jo and Chris Hookway. Each year a new cohort of artists are supported, with alumni now forming a significant part of the Theatres’ programme. Participation has also grown over the past eight years. Sheffield People’s Theatre, the multi-generational participatory company has broadened its reach, having regularly featured alongside professional casts on the Crucible stage – most memorably in Standing at the Sky’s Edge – whilst also breaking new ground with their own productions, and expanding into groups for younger members and adults with learning disabilities and/or Autism. A new strand of community co-created work – born out of a major push to connect beyond the organisation’s walls during the pandemic – continues to enrich Sheffield Theatres’ spaces over the year.

Sheffield Theatres’ work to improve access and representation for deaf and disabled audiences and artists has accelerated in the last eight years. A co-production with fingersmiths of My Mother Said I Never Should (2019) rendered the play simultaneously in spoken English and BSL. Training programmes to develop better BSL integration in performance, and collaboration with ground-breaking Audio Description company Hear the Picture, have pointed the way to more creative accessible performances. Most recently, Sheffield Theatres’ six-year collaboration with Ramps on the Moon partners culminated in Hastie’s 2022 production and tour of Much Ado About Nothing, with fully integrated BSL, Audio Description and captioning.

Chariots of Fire opens the final season in the Crucible. MAMMA MIA! turns 25 on 6 April 2024

“MAMMA MIA!” TURNS 25

ON SATURDAY 6 APRIL 2024

AT LONDON’S NOVELLO THEATRE

ONLY THE THIRD MUSICAL IN THE HISTORY OF THE WEST END TO TURN 25

SEEN BY 70 MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE

In a month’s time, on Saturday 6 April 2024, the original production of MAMMA MIA! will celebrate its 25th anniversary, making it only the third musical in the history of the West End, to reach its Silver Jubilee.

Since premiering in London’s West End in 1999, the exhilarating smash-hit has become a global phenomenon, with a staggering 70 million people having seen it worldwide.

The sunny, funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads on a Greek island idyll, all unfolding to the magic of ABBA’s timeless pop masterpieces, has been seen in over 50 productions in 16 different languages grossing more than $4 billion at the box office and turned into two record-breaking movies – MAMMA MIA! The Movie and MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again.

MAMMA MIA! originally opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre on 6 April 1999, before transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004, and then to the Novello Theatre in 2012.  The London production of MAMMA MIA! has been seen by over 10 million people, played over 9,300 performances and has broken box office records in all three of its London homes and last month set a new record for the highest ever weekly gross in the musical’s history.

MAMMA MIA! continues to have great success around the world, with the current UK & International Tour and the North American Tour both selling out.

Judy Craymer, creator and producer of MAMMA MIA!, said of this landmark anniversary, “The success of MAMMA MIA! is extraordinary and a joyous occasion to celebrate.  The West End production is still the global flagship and it’s wonderful to be able to acknowledge such a momentous anniversary with our incredible casts and crews, our original creative team, and all the fabulous audiences we’ve had in London over the past quarter of a century. Back when we opened on 6 April 1999, we never dreamt that in 2024 we’d be celebrating our 25th Birthday on the very same day ABBA mark 50 years since their Eurovision win.  It’s simply magnificent that MAMMA MIA! continues to be loved and to resonate with audiences today. Here’s to many more years!

The London production stars Mazz Murray as Donna, Kate Graham as Tanya, Nicola-Dawn Brook as Rosie, Haydn Oakley as Sam, Christopher Dickins as Harry, Stephen Beckett as Bill, Stevie Doc as Sophie, Tobias Turley as Sky, Jessie Odeleye as Ali, Olivia Brookes as Lisa, Chay Wills as Eddie and Arcangelo Ciulla as Pepper, with Natalie Langston playing Donna at certain performances.

Also in the cast are Aaron Archer, Amy Barker, Matthew Barrow, John-Paul Birss, Daniel J Brian, Sinéad Courtney, Izzy Cross, Ellis Dackombe, Lauren Dawes, Léa Desjacques, Lawrence Guntert, Samantha Ivey, Jennie Jacobs, Luke Jasztal, Nicole Lupino, Flyn Mullins, Hayley-Jo Murphy, Bradley Perret, Jacob Ritzema and Ella Tweed.

As part of the 25th year celebrations, Judy Craymer was Executive Producer of ITV’s MAMMA MIA! I Have a Dream, which searched for new young talent to join the stage musical. Host Zoe Ball revealed Stevie Doc and Tobias Turley as the worthy winners and this year they joined the London production in the roles of Sophie and Sky.

Produced by Judy Craymer, MAMMA MIA! The Movie became the highest grossing live action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008.  A second film, MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again, opened in July 2018 and is the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time. Both films starred Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stella Skarsgård, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper, with Lily James, Andy Garcia and Cher joining them in the second film.

With music & lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus, MAMMA MIA! is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast. The production is designed by Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken, and musical supervision, additional material & arrangements by Martin Koch.

MAMMA MIA! is produced by Judy Craymer, Richard East & Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal.

Wicked Review

Birmingham Hippodrome – until 7th April 2024.

Reviewed by Emma Millward

5*****

Wicked flew into Birmingham to start a 5-week residency at the Hippodrome, the third stop on the UK tour that concludes in Manchester in January 2025. Currently, Birmingham Hippodrome has sold an impressive 60,000 tickets for this leg of the tour alone. Winner of more than 100 global awards, the show has already been seen by 65 million people worldwide and recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Broadway premiere. A 25 minute delay at the start of the performance due to technical issues did not dampen the crowd’s spirits at all, and when one of the infamous Flying Monkeys crawled from the orchestra pit as the curtain was raised, the cheers were deafening.

Based on the best-selling novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ by Gregory Maguire, and written by Winnie Holzman, the show depicts the origin story of the characters created in L. Frank Baum’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’. There are many ‘in jokes’ and allusions to the original Wizard of Oz along the way to keep the hardcore fans happy. We follow the early lives of Elphaba Thropp (Laura Pick) and Galinda Upland (Sarah O’Conner), who would later become known as The Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. Both are captivating right from the outset. Galinda is bubbly, self-obsessed and, of course, ever so popular. Elphaba is reserved and angry at how she is treated differently because of her striking green skin. Their vocal performances are outstanding throughout. The pair embark on a journey of unlikely friendship, betrayal, self-discovery and acceptance. Along the way, they both meet and fall for Fiyero (Carl Man), who helps them fight against the Wizard (Simeon Truby) whose rule of Oz has become a dictatorship. They realise the Wizard and Madame Morrible (Donna Berlin) have created animal inequality in Oz, when it becomes apparent that the talking animals in the kingdom are starting to lose both their voices and their freedom.

The show has exceptional vocal performances from start to finish from all involved. The iconic score by Stephen Schwartz carries the story along perfectly and is performed beautifully by the orchestra with conductor Matthew J. Loughran. Some people may be waiting for the most famous song ‘Defying Gravity’, a fantastic climax to the show’s first half as Elphaba soars to the top of the stage. But along the way, all the songs are just as captivating in their own way. The production quality is obvious throughout, from the exquisite ‘Steampunk’ inspired outfits designed by Susan Hilferty, to the beautiful scenic design by Eugene Lee. The sets are awe-inspiring, especially the green-hued City of Oz.

The show brings together impressive special effects, scarier moments (it wouldn’t be Oz without them), perfectly timed comedic moments and amazing songs performed by a talented ensemble of performers. There are a few surprises along the way that I really don’t want to spoil for those who have yet to see the show! Judging by the prolonged standing ovation, it left the audience totally bewitched and begging for more. For the next five weeks there is definitely ‘No place like Brum’.

Opera North’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Aleko Review

Theatre Royal Nottingham – Wednesday 6th March and Friday 8th March 2024

Reviewed by Jill Heslop

4****

Nottingham’s Theatre Royal welcome back Opera North for their Winter season with a rousing production of Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni in a double bill with Rachmaninov’s Aleko.

Both are short operas, but together making a full programme, sharing the tragic themes of obsessive love and jealousy. This is a revival of Cavalleria Rusticana paired with the rarely performed Aleko and it works well as a night at the opera.

Both operas are directed by Katrina Sofulak and conducted with delicacy by Antony Hermus. Indeed, it is a beautiful treat to hear the live orchestra throughout. Cavalleria rusticana is known for its soaring melodies and the orchestra executes these wonderfully. The singing has some incredible soloists. Santuzza, played by Giselle Allen, displays an impassioned religious devotion which is transferred to the man who seduced and then betrayed her, Turiddù, played strongly by Andrés Presno.

The role of the chorus in both operas is important to represent community. When attending Mass on Easter Sunday in Cavalleria Rusticana, the off-stage choral singing is incredibly effective and moving, building steadily to the entrance of the full chorus singing forte on stage in the Easter hymn. The dramatic story is in the tradition of Italian opera – with themes of love, devotion, betrayal, revenge and finally death.

The two operas paired in this way work well together due to the similar themes but they are also contrasting which enables us to reflect on the different treatment of each story – the sparse, minimal, dreary staging of Cavalleria Rusticana with the colourful abundance of Aleko. We can differentiate between the traditional religious Italian values of Cavalleria Rusticana and the community of travellers espousing peace and free love in Aleko.

There is also a contrast of sounds: Mascagni’s score in traditional Italian with the romantic harmonies of Rachmaninov’s opera in Russian. Two different sound worlds creating a moving musical experience.

The lead singers are impressive. Robert Hayward takes on roles in both operas, singing Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana and the title role in Aleko. Andrés Presno is also in prominent roles in both pieces as Turiddù and A Lover in Aleko. Zemfira in Aleko, played by Elin Pritchard, displays a rich tone showing great control – singing the higher range quietly, at one point singing face down as she is dying with the ethereal sounds hauntingly filling the stage.

The inclusion of three characters from the first opera brings the cycle of revenge and tragedy to an end, with a focus on the guilt of the murderer and the waste of life. An emotional and intense experience with some beautiful well-executed music and heart-felt singing.

The passion they both share for Shakespeare is echoed by us at the Watermill and the event itself will take place on the set of our new production of Much Ado About Nothing. Judi has been a long-term supporter of the theatre and was instrumental in the fundraising drive when the theatre became a trust in 2008, ensuring the future of the theatre as a producing space was secured. Brendan also has a long history with the venue both as a performer but also as director of his stunning version of Under Milk Wood here in 2017. We couldn’t be happier to host them both but especially to talk about Shakespeare through the lens of Judi’s astonishing career.”

Claire Murray, Executive Director commented, “For The Watermill to have this generous support from Dame Judi Dench and Brendan O’Hea is a fantastic boost to our fundraising. PRAISE FOR STEFANIE JONES AND JACK CHAMBERS

Jones heads the cast with an impeccable performance.

She’s a terrific Mary Poppins, as sharp as her Edwardian-inspired outfits from the moment she appears from thin air until the final scene, in which she soars above the audience to who knows where. The Age (Melbourne)

Stefanie Jones is a magnetic Mary. Her eyes twinkle with mild vanity and well-intentioned mischief. She’s the automatic focus whenever she’s on stage. Sydney Morning Herald

And the super-nanny’s sidekick, the chimney sweep Bert (Jack Chambers), launches his happy feet and thousand-watt smile into a glorious, gravity-defying tap-dance that has to be seen to be believed. The Age (Melbourne)

“Jack Chambers is the consummate song and dance man with the role of Bert seemingly made for him. His cheek, charisma and heart are on full display alongside a spot of slapstick brilliance and enviable dance skills that hit full throttle during Step in Time as Chambers takes tap dancing to a gravity defying height.” The West Australian (Perth)

Unfortunate, the Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch Review

PLAYHOUSE THEATRE, LIVERPOOL – UNTIL SATURDAY 9TH MARCH 2024

REVIEWED BY MIA BOWEN

5*****

Having caught a previous production of Unfortunate, whilst touring the UK in 2022, I was thrilled to see that this musical is back and even better – it’s bigger, louder, and wetter than ever! The previous production has been revised to transform the original 80-minute musical into a show now lasting over 2 ½ hours (including the interval), filled with uproarious and witty camp humour!

Last night, the musical parody that gives a new spin on the tale of The Little Mermaid was a hit at the Playhouse, causing quite a splash and things got very wet. If you are anticipating a musical resembling the Disney adaptation, prepare for a big surprise! This unique production features an explicit pop soundtrack, risqué humour, and a mix of sex, swearing, and sorcery that promises a hilarious and thought-provoking evening.

Elphaba, Cruella, and Maleficent have all had their time in the spotlight, so it is only right that Ursula, the Queen of villains, has her moment too. It seems that the Sea Witch has been unfairly misunderstood and is actually a heroine.

Robyn Grant and Daniel Foxx’s writing is truly exceptional, brimming with wit, innuendos, puns, and many laugh-out-loud moments. When you find yourself sporting a huge smile throughout an entire comedy musical, you know it’s truly hitting the mark.

The music, by Tim Gilvin is fantastic, featuring several catchy songs and impressive dance numbers. My favourite was ‘We didn’t make it to Disney‘, performed by all the outcasts, the ugly ones and undesirables. Melody Sinclair’s choreography provides opportunities for everyone to showcase their talents. It cleverly utilises the energetic ensemble by combining dancing with puppeteering and acting to create an engaging performance. Abby Clarke’s work on the set, the costumes and especially the puppets is exceptional. The visuals in this production are absolutely stunning.

The standout stars of this production are Allie Dart and Jack Gray, who play the roles of Sebastian and Grimsby. They also take on other parts, including the two very flamboyant eels, who provide comedic brilliance!

Don’t be one of those unfortunate souls who miss out on a truly enjoyable night out!
