It’s 1982 and a group of five out of work Liverpudlian labourers are on the dole and desperate for legitimate work. Finding work for cash here and there, and having lost all their money on a bad job in Middlesbrough, they must avoid being caught by the sniffers while trying to retain some sense of themselves. Based on Alan Bleasdale’s famous TV series, this stage adaptation by James Graham originated at Liverpool’s Royal Court under Kevin Fearon, before moving to the National, and then the Garrick.
Set during the height of the Thatcher years, Boys from the Blackstuff follows George (Philip Whitchurch), Dixie (Mark Womack), Loggo (Aron Julius), Chrissie (Nathan McMullen), and Yosser (Barry Sloane) as they sign on, work dodgy side hustles that result in various tragedies, and try and keep themselves and their families together. This play is certainly bleak, but it is also full of heart, warmth and community. These men love and support each other through grief, illness, and heartbreak; their lives forever woven together.
The whole cast under the direction of Kate Wasserberg is superb, but it is Barry Sloane as the desperate Yosser who stands out. Constantly seeing potential for employment in every job with his catchphrase “Gis a job, go on, gis it”. He is pushed to the very edge by his circumstances, sometimes we see him topple into violence. There is a scene involving Yosser and the police that is so beautifully choreographed by Rachel Bown-Williams that I fully forgot to breathe for a minute or so.
Despite the play being centred around the experiences of men, balance is afforded us by stellar performances from Lauren O’Neil and Helen Carter. They play wives at the ends of their tether and Department of Employment workers who, like all the other characters, are all heartbreak and gentle comedy.
Amy Jane Cook’s set is industrial and harsh, and with the aid of projections and soundscapes from Jamie Jenkin and Dyfan Jones, Liverpool becomes another character in the plot.
Boys from the Blackstuff is about people trying to survive within a system that is not fit for purpose. Honest and poetic, James Graham’s play about lives torn apart in a desperate time is a must see this summer.

Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Chuchu Nwagu Productions and Sonia Friedman Productions today announce that the Bush Theatre’s production of Shifters, Benedict Lombe’s intoxicating and fierce new romance will transfer to the West End this summer following a sell-out run at the Bush Theatre earlier this year.
Heather Agyepong (School Girls; or The African Mean Girls Play, Lyric Hammersmith) and Tosin Cole (Netflix’s Supacell, BBC’s Doctor Who), whose electrifying performances received critical acclaim in the original production, will reprise their roles as young lovers Des and Dre for a strictly limited season of nine weeks at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London directed by BAFTA-nominated and Evening Standard Theatre Award-winner Lynette Linton (Blues for An Alabama Sky, National Theatre; Clyde’s Donmar; August in England, Bush Theatre).

This epic and universal love story is about the enduring power of memory and young love. Meet Dre and Des, they are young, gifted, Black. He stayed. She left. Years later they come crashing back into each other’s lives, carrying new secrets and old scars. Caught in the space between memory and reality, they struggle to navigate the shifting borders that threaten to rewrite their past and reshape their future.
Shifters’ transfer to the Duke of York’s Theatre, St Martin’s Lane, London marks a ground-breaking moment for Benedict Lombe who follows in the footsteps of Natasha Gordon (Nine Night) and Yasmin Joseph (J’Ouvert) as the third Black British female playwright to have her play staged in the history of the West End.
Benedict Lombe (Susan Smith Blackburn Prize-winner for Lava, 2022, Bush Theatre) comments: “Shifters’ transfer is a big moment. Our dreamy, tender, unrepentantly romantic show about two lost souls finding a connection that can’t be forgotten was a hit with Bush audiences. Now we get to recreate our magic on a bigger stage! I hope what Shiftersdoes – as well as invite new audiences to fall in love with Des and Dre – is accelerate the pace for the next wave of Black British female playwrights in the West End.”
Director and Artistic Director of the Bush Theatre Lynette Linton said: ”We’re incredibly proud that Shifters is moving from the Bush to the West End – our second transfer this year. At the Bush we’re all about supporting writers to build sustainable careers, and we’ve loved working with Benedict over three commissions. Benedict writes dialogue and romance in a way that no one else can, and it is my privilege to get to direct her words and reunite with Heather and Tosin. We are so excited to tell this story of Black love on such a big platform – I can’t wait for audiences to discover the beauty in this tender, funny and relatable show that is the perfect summer romance.”
Heather Agyepong comments: “Shows written by Black British women or plays centering two dark skin leads often don’t reach West End stages so it really feels like we’re part of a legacy. Our stories in all their nuance and beauty have always mattered but it’s great to be on a bigger platform to allow them to shine a little brighter.”
Tosin Cole adds: “It’s an honour to have Shifters transfer to the West End. I’m really excited for a second chance to tell this amazing story and to work with this group of talented people again.”

With Alan Cox, David Yelland, Forbes Masson, Julius D’Silva, Daniel Boyd and Archie Backhouse
The best-selling show in the history of Jermyn Street Theatre, where it ran in Spring 2023, Farm Hall brings an extraordinary true story to life.
It is Summer 1945: Hitler is dead, but the war in the Pacific rages on. The Allies have detained six of Germany’s leading nuclear scientists – including three Nobel Prize winners – at Farm Hall, a country house just outside Cambridge. They entertain themselves with some redacted newspapers, a broken piano and a copy of Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit. But their tranquil summer is shattered by the news that the Americans have succeeded where the Germans failed. The United States has not only built an atom bomb, but has used one against Japan. Unbeknownst to the scientists, during their stay, every inch of Farm Hall was bugged and their every action recorded. This play is inspired by the true events that took place at Farm Hall between July 1945 and January 1946.
The superb ensemble cast bringing this extraordinary true story to life include David Yelland (The Crown, Chariots of Fire, Poirot), who plays the role ofMax Von Laue; Alan Cox(Say My Name, Mrs Dalloway, Housewife, 49) plays the role of Werner Heisenberg. Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker is played by Daniel Boyd (On Chesil Beach, Tiger House); Forbes Masson(EastEnders, Catastrophe), plays the role of Otto Hahn Julius D’Silva (The Crown, The Ten Commandments),plays the role of Kurt Diebner; Archie Backhouse appears as Erich Bagge. An associate artist with Complicité, his recent stage credits include Strategic Love Play with Paines Plough and The Wonderful World of Dissocia at Stratford East.
Playwright Katherine Moar studied history at the University of Edinburgh and Darwin College, Cambridge. She is currently studying for a PhD at King’s College London. Farm Hall is her first play.
Stephen Unwin is an award-winning British theatre and opera director and has directed more than 50 plays and operas. In 1993, he founded English Touring Theatre, for whom he directed more than 30 productions, many of which transferred to London. He was Artistic Director of the new Rose Theatre in Kingston from 2008 to January 2014.

Craig Revel Horwood Announces Debut Solo Album and UK Tour
Craig Revel Horwood has announced he is to release his debut solo album in the autumn, ahead of an extensive UK tour in 2025.
Titled ‘Revelations: Songs Boys Don’t Sing’, the album will be released on 18th October via the Westway Music label, and is preceded by the release of Craig’s debut solo single, a dance floor update of Dame Shirley Bassey’s classic ‘This Is My Life’, which is out today (Monday, 17th June).
In support of his album, Craig will embark on a 53-date UK tour that begins in Eastleigh on 4th April 2025 and ends in Dunfermline on 28th June, including a date at London’s Union Chapel on 26th April.
Craig is promising fans a “Fab-U-Lous” night of glamour, tall tales and big songs from his album, which features ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’ from Funny Girl, ‘On My Own’ from Les Miserables and, amongst many others, ‘Little Girls’ from Annie, a song that Craig has sung in many productions playing Miss Hannigan.
As the longest-serving judge on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, Craig has become the undisputed king of the glitter ball and is now regarded as a national treasure. After starting his career as a dancer, Craig worked on the nation’s biggest musicals before becoming a successful choreographer, director and best-selling author. Also a remarkable singer, Craig has performed in many musicals and shows across the UK.
Craig said, “I am thrilled to announce the release of my debut album! It’s a momentous occasion for me, and I can’t wait to share the songs I’ve carefully chosen. Throughout my musical journey, I’ve had the privilege of performing as both a dancer and a singer in numerous musicals. However, this album holds a special place in my heart as I’ve had the opportunity to select songs that truly resonate with me.
“Each track on the album is traditionally associated with female singers, which presented a delightful challenge. I embraced this opportunity to record these songs, knowing that it might be my only chance to give them my own interpretation. The album is a perfect blend of drama, pathos, romance, and a touch of high camp. I’ve poured my heart and soul into every note, hoping that you will love each and every song.
“Thank you for joining me on this incredible musical journey. I can’t wait for you to experience the magic of my album!”
‘Revelations: Songs Boys Don’t Sing’ and ‘This Is My Life’ are available to pre-order/stream now from https://slinky.to/ThisIsMyLife, with the full list of tour dates as follows:
An Officer and a Gentleman is a romance set in the 1980’s and is based around the latest cohort at a Navy Officer Candidate School, and some of the women at the local factory. Given the time period, there are certainly some outdated values portrated, however it is true to the era and only goes to illustrate just how much the world has changed.
The show looks at the relationship between the candidates in the Aviation Academy and how they interact in an environment where both their mental and physical health is consistently challenged by the Gunnery Sergeant, Emil Foley – a character powerfully played by Jamal Crawford. Foley seems to see it as a personal challenge to try and get them to drop on request (DOR), from the course.
Most candidates are carrying some sort of emotional baggage, but none more so than the two main characters – Zack Mayo (Luke Baker), the son of an alcoholic, petty officer and Sid Worley (Paul French), who was desperately trying to replace his older brother after he sadly died in action. In addition there is Casey Seager (Olivia Foster – Browne) a strong woman striving to become the first female jet pilot.
Zac and Sid meet early on, and start dating two local girls – Paula (Georgia Lennon) and Lynette (Sinead Long). The two women have different motivations for their relationships, different tactics and – more importantly – very different attitudes.
The curtains open to a quite industrial set, one which works brilliantly throughout the show as they utilise a metal, stepped tower and neon lights to reproduce the various locations depicted in the story… The academy, the bar, the factory and the hotel all use the tower in various ways to portray key elements within the story.
I had some concerns regarding how easily and successfully this would convert to a musical, and although sometimes the music chosen didn’t quite fit or enhance the story – the amazing 80’s power ballads clearly delighted the audience. All the cast had incredibly powerful voices, and were able to perform all of the numbers with great success and energy. The choreography, it has to be said, was also excellent – both in the dance numbers as well as the fight scenes.
Despite my initial concerns, I did actually enjoy the show. I would have liked a little more depth to the story and to see more development of the individual characters, but it was definitely worth seeing for the brilliantly performed numbers – which are what earned them a standing ovation at the end.
