The Other Palace presents REDCLIFFE musical workshop written by Jordan Luke Gage
After a sold-out presentation of Act 1 as part of MTFestUK 2024, the new musical REDCLIFFE returns with public workshop performances that offer a first look at the full show from Wed 29 – Fri 31 May at The Other Palace Studio.
REDCLIFFE, written by Jordan Luke Gage (Bonnie & Clyde, Heathers, &Juliet) and orchestrations & musical direction by Ben Tomalin, is based on the true events of William Critchard and Richard Arnold in Redcliffe, Bristol in the 1750s and is an epic tale of forbidden love during the persecution people faced for hundreds of years.
William is feeling the pressure to find a wife whilst also being the breadwinner to his family. His mother’s nagging doesn’t help. When he meets Richard, he unlocks a world he had never dared to explore before and it’s clear there is no going back.
Set to lead the workshop performances are Jordan Luke Gage as William and Liam Tamne as Richard. Full cast to be announced.
Writer Jordan Luke Gage says, ‘REDCLIFFE is a story that I have been living with for some time now so I’m very excited to present it in this workshop form to an audience. I based the musical on an article I found in the Bristol archives that explores the complexity of navigating a forbidden gay relationship in a world of societal pressure and expectations. Ultimately it is the exploration of the human heart and the lengths we will go to be able to live freely.’
Paul Taylor-Mills, Artistic Director of The Other Palace, says: ‘I established MTFestUK 5 years ago to allow writers of new musicals to play, explore, and present in front of an audience at the earliest stages. I have worked with Jordan many times and whilst I knew of his incredible ability on stage, I had no idea of his passion and craft as a writer. To say I am blown away is an understatement.
‘With REDCLIFFE, he has made a musical that speaks to our generation yet at the same time puts the spotlight on a moment in time that needs remembering. It’s brilliant to see that the work of The Other Palace and The Turbine Theatre in showcasing new writers is bearing fruit. I can’t wait to see how the future of REDCLIFFE takes shape.’
REDCLIFFE will be presented in a workshop format with actors using scripts at times, with limited tickets available to the public.
Produced by The Other Palace and funded via the venue’s Development Fund, where 50p of every ticket sold in the Main House goes to fund developing new work. Further plans for the production will be revealed in due course.

Singing superstar Jason Donovan is set to thrill theatre audiences later this year, as he joins the cast of Richard O’Brien’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll musical the Rocky Horror Show, to star as Frank ‘n’ Furter in the 2024/2025 UK tour. Jason will be returning to the role of Frank for the first time in the UK for over 25 years. Back by popular demand, the show is set to hit the road from 19 August 2024 until 1 February 2025 and deliver a party not to be missed!
Jason and the exceptional cast (to be announced) will be bringing their biggest party yet to audiences across the country. The upcoming tour is the new West End production of the Rocky Horror Show and includes a two-week run at London’s Dominion Theatre from 6 September – 20 September 2024, plus a Christmas season at the Liverpool Playhouse from 3 December – 4 January 2025. Tickets are on sale now from RockyHorror.co.uk.
Jason said: “I am thrilled to dive into the exhilarating role of Frank ‘n’ Furter with a fantastic new cast and Timewarp with audiences throughout the UK. We promise to deliver the freshest Rocky EVER, that audiences will not forget. So, buckle up, as the show promises to be a wild and wicked ride!”
Neighbours icon and pop legend Jason Donovan will be donning his fishnets for UK audiences after a sellout season at the Theatre Royal, Sydney for which he received rave reviews: “Jason Donovan is astounding!” exclaimed the Sydney Scoop. Jason made his West End debut in 1991 playing Joseph in the London revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and has gone on to have a hugely successful stage career with credits including Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Grease The Musical. Jason’s debut album was a went platinum in Australia and was the biggest selling album in the UK in 1989. Since then, he has sold over 13 million albums worldwide and continues to tour with his live show.
The Rocky Horror Show defies space and time as it continues to captivate audiences around the world featuring all the beloved songs, outrageous characters and infectious energy that has made the show a global phenomenon for over five decades.
Directed by Christopher Luscombe, the smash hit show features all of the famous musical numbers which have made The Rocky Horror Show such a huge hit for 50 years and counting, including “Sweet Transvestite”, “Science Fiction/Double Feature”, “Dammit Janet” and, of course, the timeless floor-filler, “The Time-Warp”.
The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank ’n’ Furter by chance when their car breaks down outside his house whilst on their way to visit their favourite college professor. It’s an adventure they’ll never forget, with fun, frolics, frocks and frivolity, bursting with timeless songs and outrageous outfits. The Rocky Horror Show is a guaranteed party, which famously combines science-fiction, horror, comedy and music while encouraging audience participation – meaning, of course, getting dressed-up in the most outrageous fancy dress.
The Rocky Horror Show first began life in 1973 before an audience of just 63 people in the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs. It was an immediate success and transferred to the Chelsea Classic Cinema, before going on to run at the Kings Road Theatre, 1973-79 and the Comedy Theatre in the West End, 1979-80.
Since the show first opened the Rocky Horror Show has become the longest continuous run of a contemporary musical anywhere in the world. The show has been seen by over 30 million people worldwide in more than 30 countries and translated into 20 languages as it continues to delight audiences on its sell-out tour.
In 1975 it was transformed into a film called ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’. This film adaptation took over $135 million at the Box Office and is still shown in cinemas around the world more than 40 years after its premiere, making it the longest running theatrical release in cinema history. Many stars including Russell Crowe, Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Jerry Springer, Jason Donovan and Meatloaf have appeared in The Rocky Horror Show over the past 50 years.
Ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, The Rocky Horror Show is the boldest bash of them all. But be warned, this show has rude parts!

Let me first tell you that the show we went to see tonight, is probably not going to be to everyone’s tastes. The play was written in the late 60’s and was put on the stage a few years after the writer’s death, so it was probably considered quite a ground breaking play at the time to be openly lambasting society’s norms and sexist attitudes through a situational comedy. I suspect that the sad demise of this decorated playwright probably added some weight to whether the play should have been put on or not at all at the time. But in the present day, you might not find the avalanche of misogynistic themes relying on crude and somewhat schoolboy comedy, quite so easy to endure. There were times we laughed, and then felt embarrassed for doing so. Nevertheless, we did go see it and here’s my review.
The play was written by Joe Orton and takes place entirely within the confines of the surgery run by Dr Prentice, played by John Dorney. The surgery is the central room from which all doors lead to unseen parts of the mental institution that Dr. Prentice oversees. We next meet Geraldine Barclay, played by Alana Jackson, interviewing for the role of Dr Prentice’s secretary and later by Mrs. Prentice, played by Holly Smith, a self-confessed nymphomaniac – despite the lack of any close relations with Dr. Prentice – and the story of workplace sexual misconduct ensues. Next a government medical inspector, Dr. Rance, played by Jack Lord, joins the melee and pretty much takes the helm of the play and steers it down a series of slap-stick situations of dubious intents and personal goals. To complete the first act, we are joined by the hotel porter from which Mrs. Prentice has returned. The porter, Nicholas Beckett, played by Alex Cardell, also has a back-story naturally consisting of sexual conquests and improper workplace behaviours. And finally police sergeant Match Rowden, played by Jon-Paul Rowden who is investigating an even more convoluted plot involving a certain unmentionable part of Winston Churchill’s statue – gone missing of course.
At some point during the evening, the conveyor belt of actors joining the party and delivering yet more twists and sub-plots to the Carry-On meets Monty-Python merry go round, has to come to an end, and that conveyor belt stops with the end of Act one. Act two delivers no more actors but just as many new twists to the sordid and inappropriate sexual goings on within a mental institution that you did not imagine possible.
This particular form of comedy might not be to everyone’s taste. But the set design was striking, befitting of any Monty-Python sketch, and the acting was truly superb, especially Jack Lord, playing the government inspector, who’s individual script must have been delivered to him by fork lift truck.
If it was the late 1960’s then perhaps the subject of these jokes would have amused you and given you reason to think about those situations back in the real (1960’s) world. So think of it in those terms and maybe you can enjoy an evening of slap-stick old-school humour, delivered by some exemplary actors. Oh, and just one more thing, there’s another even more uncomfortable twist coming right at the end too.

Tuesday night’s performance of “The 39 Steps” at the Cambridge Arts Theatre was a riotous romp through Hitchcock’s classic. Patrick Barlow’s adaptation is a side-splitting, fast-paced comedy that pays loving homage to the 1935 film. Directed with finesse by Maria Aitken, with movement direction by Toby Sedgewick, this production is a masterclass in timing, choreography, and comedic brilliance.
This is a very talented cast. 3 of them take on multiple roles, with the clowns in particular seamlessly transitioning between characters, at times with lightning-quick costume changes and split-second precision. Tom Byrne shines as a suave but rather manic Richard Hannay, effortlessly navigating the twists and turns of the spy thriller plot. Safeena Ladha is equally impressive in her portrayal of three distinct characters: the mysterious Annabella, the feisty Pamela, and the crofter’s wife, Margaret. Her versatility and comedic talents are on full display, earning well-deserved laughs from the audience.
However, it is the dynamic duo of Eugene McCoy and Maddie Rice, playing Clown 1 and Clown 2 respectively, who steal the show. Their portrayal of a myriad of characters, from policemen to train passengers, is a tour de force of physical comedy and vocal acrobatics. The pair’s choreography and synchronization are a joy to behold, as they effortlessly switch accents, mannerisms, and costumes, often within the same scene. Their performances are a testament to the power of ensemble acting and the art of comedic timing. I also particularly enjoyed Mr McCoy’s gurning! Splendid.
Aitken’s direction is a triumph, keeping the pace brisk and the laughs coming. The staging is inventive and witty, with a minimalist set that transforms into various locations with the help of clever, simple props and the cast’s physicality. The production is peppered with loving references to Hitchcock’s films. The set design, by Peter McKintosh, is a character in itself, with doors, windows, and furniture pieces that become trains, cars, and even the Forth Bridge.
“The 39 Steps” is a testament to our enduring affection for Hitchcock’s films and the ingenuity of modern theatre adaptations. The play’s humour and fast-paced action make it accessible to audiences of all ages, while the clever references to the original film provide an extra layer of enjoyment for Hitchcock aficionados.
In conclusion, the Cambridge Arts Theatre’s production of “The 39 Steps” is a must-see for anyone who loves a good laugh, appreciates the art of theatre, or simply wants to experience the magic of Hitchcock’s classic in a new light. With its stellar cast, inventive staging, and razor-sharp wit, this production is a riotous romp that will have you guffawing with laughter.
