New musical Ireland’s Call in 2016 UK Tour

irelands-callExactly one hundred years since the historic 1916 ‘Easter Rising’, one of the pivotal events in modern Irish history; Ireland’s Call, a new and exciting musical adaptation of the critically acclaimed show Essence of Ireland, is coming to stages across the UK next spring.

Ireland’s Call opens in Weymouth on 2nd March, 2016 and continues to over 45 venues nationwide through to the beginning of May.

Inspired by true events and spanning three decades, this uplifting musical tells the story of one man’s love for his Irish homeland. The story follows the extraordinary journey of the strong-headed Sean Dempsey, who at the end of World War II leaves behind his childhood sweetheart Cora and his beloved homeland Ireland, in search of a better life in the Big Apple.

Can their love survive the Atlantic Divide? Will Sean be able to resist ‘Ireland’s call’ as he embarks on an adventure full of danger, tragedy and lost love? Only fate will tell…

Creative Director Ged Graham believes 2016 is the perfect time to launch the show. He says: “We are really looking forward to bringing the show to stages across the world, starting with some of the UK’s most prestigious venues in 2016, a year set to be a huge celebration of Irish culture to commemorate the centenary of The Easter Rising.

Ged Graham was born in the Liberties in Dublin and remembers moving to the UK when he was nine. He says: “Everyone has been separated from loved ones and their homes at some point in their lives, so this is a story that people can really engage with and relate to, myself included. The audience is drawn in to the story and swept on a journey that is both heartbreaking and heartwarming! It is set against a backdrop of key historical events including America’s introduction to rock and roll, the rebuilding of London post World War two and John F Kennedy’s historic presidential visit to Ireland in 1963. It’s a story full of emotional highs and lows.

An exhilarating mix of original scores and well-known songs such as Galway Girl, Isle of Hope Isle Of Tears, I Loved Her First, Tell Me Ma, Irish Rover, Ireland’s Call is a powerful, explosive blend of energy, emotion and music which leaves audiences from around the world on an unforgettable high.

Ireland’s Call is a timeless celebration – a celebration of dreams, enduring love, the resilience of human spirit and of the powerful pull between one man and his homeland.

JOIN THE REVOLUTION WITH NORTHERN BALLET’S 1984 AT THE LYCEUM

Northern Ballet return to Sheffield with a thrilling adaptation of George Orwell’s cult novel 1984, adapted and choreographed by Bradford-born Jonathan Watkins, from Tuesday 20 – Saturday 24 October at the Lyceum Theatre.

nbd-2

Ministry of Truth worker Winston Smith lives in a world of absolute conformity, his every action scrutinised by Big Brother. Whilst outwardly conforming to Party doctrine, he is secretly disillusioned, illegally documenting his thoughts in a diary. When he unexpectedly receives a love note from Julia, a colleague he suspected on spying on him for the Thought Police, they embark on an illicit affair, leading a dangerous double life and putting physical desire above Party discipline. As their romance develops and they prepare for an act of political rebellion, Winston and Julia discover that Big Brother is always watching and no one can be trusted; least of all themselves.

Choreographed by Jonathan Watkins, (whose acclaimed adaptation of Kes, produced by Sheffield Theatres, had its World Première at the Crucible as part of last years’ Yorkshire Festival,) Northern Ballet’s 1984 is the first full-length ballet adaptation of George Orwell’s renowned novel.

The production is set to an original score by Tony-nominated Composer and Arranger Alex Baranowski, who also created the score for Kes and has recently worked with Mercury Prize winning band The xx.

Audiences will not want to miss this powerful and thought-provoking ballet based on Orwell’s classic story.

Northern Ballet’s 1984 visits the Lyceum Theatre from Tuesday 20 – Saturday 24 October.  Tickets are on sale now, priced from £12.00 – £37.00 and can be purchased in person at Sheffield Theatres’ Box Office, by calling 0114 249 6000 or online at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk. VICTOR MELDREW RETURNS FOR ONE NIGHT FUNDRAISER

image003 (3)VICTOR MELDREW RETURNS FOR ONE NIGHT FUNDRAISER

Richard WilsonRichard Wilson, best known for his role as Victor Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave, will reprise his famous role in a special fundraising event for Sheffield Theatres on Friday 23 October.

An Evening with Richard Wilson is a unique event for Sheffield audiences. It will be directed by Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director, Daniel Evans and will bring Victor Meldrew back to life in scenes from The Trial, an episode from the fourth series of the hit comedy show.  Alongside this performance, Richard will also provide a fascinating, rich and humorous insight into his life and the highs and lows of playing Meldrew, as well as answering questions on his extensive television and theatre career.

Richard Wilson has generously devised this event for Sheffield Theatres to support the company with its fundraising. As a charity, fundraising plays a vital role in ensuring that the Theatres can continue to produce bold and ambitious work as well as creating projects, events and activities in which everyone can participate and enjoy. Last year Sheffield Theatres produced ten revivals and two new plays, took its productions to 43 towns and cities, and enabled 25,700 young people to enjoy the work onstage thanks to subsidised tickets.

An Associate Director at Sheffield Theatres since 2010, Richard has directed several productions in Sheffield including That Face, The Pride, Lungs and Love Your Soldiers. He also performed inKrapp’s Last Tape in the Studio last year. Speaking about this special performance, he commented: ‘I think the work that Sheffield Theatres produces on stage as well as with the community is fantastic. I’m looking forward to bringing Victor Meldrew back on stage, to help the organisation raise much needed funds to continue the good work that it is so well renowned for.’

Daniel Evans, Artistic Director said: ‘We are incredibly grateful to Richard for supporting us in this way. I’m really excited to be directing Richard as Victor Meldrew, a character that is beloved by the British public. I’ve watched the scenes that he’ll be performing only last week and they’re absolutely hilarious – the audience don’t stop laughing throughout the whole thing. This is a hugely exciting event and I’m thrilled that Richard will be performing it exclusively in Sheffield.’

Following the performance, Richard will join a number of guests in the Adelphi Room for drinks and canapés. Tickets for the performance and the post show reception are priced £40. Standard tickets for the show are available priced £20 and can be purchased from Sheffield Theatres’ Box Office in-person or by phone on 0114 249 6000.  A transaction fee of £1.50 applies to all bookings made at the Box Office (excluding cash).

Darlington Civic Theatre – Classic Ghost Stories

Civic-Theatre-Hi-Res-Logo-1-117x300JUMP ON BOARD FOR A SPINE CHILLING DOUBLE BILL

Jack Shepherd stars in a spine chilling double bill of Classic Ghost Stories at Darlington Civic Theatre from Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 October.

Middle Ground Theatre Company present their hugely successful adaptation of Charles Dickens’ The Signalman. Set in 1880, this is the exquisitely unnerving tale of a tormented signalman who is haunted by visions of impending disaster on his isolated stretch of line. Can a well-meaning traveller calm the man’s fears before he spirals into self-destruction?

The show is coupled with the world stage premiere adaptation of Robert Aickman’s The Waiting Room. Having missed his connection, George Pendlebury is forced to spend a night alone in Casterton’s old station waiting room. Frozen half to death, he awakes after midnight to find that, perhaps, he is not alone after all.

A perfect way to spend a dark autumn evening.

Award-winning veteran actor Jack Shepherd has a long and distinguished career in film, television and on stage. His awards include a Laurence Olivier Theatre Award, a Plays and Players London Critics’ Award, and a Time Out Award. He is probably best known for his portrayal of Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe in the television series Wycliffe. He is joined by Richard Walsh (12 years as Albert “Sicknote” Quigley in ITV’s London’s Burning) plus a full supporting cast.

There will be a free Post-Show talk on Thursday 15 October and a Post Show Theatre Ghost Tour on Friday 16 October. To book a space on the Ghost Tour – an opportunity to learn about the ghosts that have been witnessed in several areas of the theatre – please call the box office on 01325 486555.

Classic Ghost Stories comes to Darlington Civic Theatre from Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17. Tickets* are £17 to £25.50

*All ticket prices include a £1 restoration levy.
