Imelda May at Hull City Hall

Imelda May to perform at Hull City Hall

Singer songwriter at venue on Sunday, November 19

Irish superstar singer and songwriter Imelda May has announced a show at Hull City Hall in November, one of three additional UK tour dates released due to phenomenal public demand.

Imelda will appear at the venue on Sunday, November 19 before shows in Leicester and London’s Royal Albert Hall.

One of Ireland’s most celebrated female artists, Imelda was discovered by Jools Holland, who asked her to support him on tour and she has performed alongside legendary artists including Lou Reed, Bono and Smokey Robinson.

Imelda’s new single Girl I Used To Be is released on June 30 on Decca Records. The track is taken from her Top 5 new album Life. Love. Flesh. Blood and follows the BBC Radio 2 playlisted previous singles Call Me, Black Tears and Should’ve Been You.

A hauntingly beautiful acoustic ballad, Girl I Used To Be (listen on Spotify) is a memoir of Imelda’s life growing-up in the Liberties area of Dublin and the lessons learnt that she will pass on to her daughter.

Speaking about the track, Imelda said: “I love those old story songs where you’re taken on a journey from beginning to end.

“Songs you’re riveted with. Like when you’re in the car and you sit in the driveway, because you can’t turn the radio off, you have to listen to the end of the story.

“I thought, ‘I’d like to write one of them’. The lyrics are about my family, and my daughter, and myself and my life growing-up in Dublin.

“We didn’t have much money but my parents are fabulous, creative and open-minded people.

“They gave me art and literature and encouraged me to do whatever was in my heart and I want to do that with my daughter.”

On release, Life. Love. Flesh. Blood topped the UK Americana chart and landed No.5 in the official UK album chart (her second UK top 5), ahead of artists including Texas and Drake with her strongest first sales week ever in the UK.

One of the most critically acclaimed releases of 2017, the album spent more than a month in the Top 20 and recently returned to the Top 10.

Imelda has promoted the new album with performances on BBC1’s The One Show and The Graham Norton Show, and ITV’s Tonight At The London Palladium.

She also appeared on Chris Evans BBC Radio 2 show, where she performed a brilliant cover of U2’s I Still Haven’t Found What I Was Looking For, and recently joined The Guardian for a webchat.

Produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, Life. Love. Flesh. Blood was recorded over seven days in Los Angeles and features musical contributions from Jeff Beck (on Black Tears), Jools Holland (on When It’s My Time) and an accomplished group of backing musicians including the core trio of guitarist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), drummer Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant and Alison Krauss) and bassist Zach Dawes (The Last Shadow Puppets, Mini Mansions).

Tickets for Imelda May at Hull City Hall on Sunday, November 19 2017 are from £25. A limited number of VIP tickets, which include a photo opportunity with Imelda, exclusive gift chosen by her and pre-signed photo and collectible VIP laminate and lanyard, are available for £99.

Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday, June 9. Book at the Hull City Hall box office or call 01482 300 306. Visit our new website www.hulltheatres.co.uk to book online.

The Play That Goes Wrong Review

Lyric Theatre, The Lowry, Manchester – until June 10th 2017.  Reviewed by Julie Noller

My night started well, 48 miles from home and that was I had left my phone, oh dear would it be a sign of things to come? Possibly but not in the way you may be thinking. I sat in Pier 8 (The Lowry’s Bar & Restaurant) with my coffee and watched the audience arrive, no phone meant a spot of people watching. I was struck by the fact tonight’s audience was made up of groups, normally I notice a lot of couples but tonight it looked like the The Play That Goes Wrong was going to be a very social affair. This was the first time I had been into The Lowry on my own, I have spoken to people who regulary attend alone after all once a performance begins we are all friends.

I collected my ticket and took some time to read through the programme, which is very tongue in cheek and a good place to start. With lots of information about the characters and the characters that they play. We also have the usual introductions to the actors which is always intresting to read how hard they’ve worked over the years learning their art.

As we the audience were taking to our seats, I looked to the stage set, we had very noticeable pieces, it looked amost like the dormitory in Hogwarts, 1920’s manor house as the title ‘Murder at Haversham Manor’ suggests, I can still hear Chris Bean/Inspector Carter saying the title and I’m giggling still, even if he did bring to mind a 1950’s holiday camp worker ala Hi-de-Hi. Then to our surprise the door (that door should be a character in itself with it’s own place in the programme) flew open, at first I thought it may be cleaners, I know silly of me. It became apparent it was part of the performance and very cleverly sets the scene for what is to follow. A dog is missing does anyone in the audience have a dog with them? Cue the cast running to the upper tiers of the theatre to look for Winston the said dog.

Attention to detail throughout is fantastic, from Annies (Katie Bernstein) ‘CAT’ tshirt tieing in with Chris introduction speech telling us all about The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, to Trevor (Greame Rooney) the lighting and sound operator who for most of the performance is sat in front of the stage and from my seat in the Stalls, I had the perfect view of (you quite often needed one eye in two places it was so fast paced), I can imagine the character being writen and would have loved to have been a fly on the wall, there when someone suggested as a scottish character he should have a bottle of Irn-bru sitting on the podium.

I have never heard an audience laugh so much, it’s the perfect antidote to the seriousness of recent months, a bit of sillyness to raise the spirits of sad times. The cast took this opportunity after their well deserved standing ovation to raise awareness of recent events, saying that Mischief Theatre members, Henry Lewis,Jonathon Sayer and Henry Shield as the uber talented writers of The Play The Goes Wrong are currently on Broadway and as such can’t be in Manchester. They wanted to organise a collection for the Manchester Relief Fund. As usual the fantastic Lowry Volunteers were fully organised with buckets.

I know it has been described as a farce but I was reminded of Baldrick in Blackadder, saying words wrong , getting mixed up but oh so funny. We have Perkins (Edward Howells) and his wrong pronunciation of many words, he always had written on his hand. Charles Haversham (Jason Callender) the very much alive corpse, will he ever get his scene right? Well the applause and cheers were all his. Thomas Collymore (Adam Byron) will he ever be able to answer the telephone? Stopped only by the set slowly falling apart. Florence Collymore (Meg Mortell) knocked unconscious despite her hilarious ‘episodes’ and overacting, desperate to regain control of her character despite Annie becoming stage struck and wanting to make the role her own. Then there’s Cecil Haversham (Alastair Kirton) with his hilarious hand gestures and smile that got him the the big audience laughs and he wants more. I wonder if anyone in the audience wondered who the murderer was? The real story is that everything is falling apart, can the drama society make it through to the end of the play and will Chris Bean realise his moustache is hanging off? Will Trevor ever find his Duran Duran CD?

I wonder if the writers have ever written Health and Safety reports as I suspect they’d be perfect at it, I wonder if they wrote a list of things that could and does go wrong before they wrote the play? I watched it whilst thinking of people, wow my teenage daughter would love this, I could see my son giggling away, I left with a huge smile. I loved it, I can’t tell you my favourite part, I can’t tell you my favourite character, I might just have to go back and watch this again….. I wonder if I can persuade my husband to take a trip to New York and Broadway? No I doubt that would work either but I can suggest returning to The Lowry before June 10th. The Play That Goes Wrong is on tour now until August, if you want some good old fashioned lighthearted British humour then this is a must see that crosses the age divide.

SAM BAILEY AND ELAINE C SMITH TO STAR IN UK TOUR OF FAT FRIENDS THE MUSICAL

Joshua Andrews and Adam Spiegel present
Kay Mellor’s
FAT FRIENDS – THE MUSICAL

  • Sam Bailey and Elaine C Smith to star alongside Jodie Prenger in the brand new stage musical Fat Friends -The Musical, sharing the role of Betty
  • Full dates announced for major UK tour in 2018 following opening run at Leeds Grand Theatre in 2017
  • Written and directed by BAFTA and multi award-winning Kay Mellor with original music from Nicholas Lloyd Webber

Number one recording artist Sam Bailey, who rose to fame winning the tenth series of The X Factor, will join the previously announced Jodie Prenger in the original British musical Fat Friends – The Musical. Sam will share the much loved role of Betty, originated on screen by Alison Steadman, with award-winning comedian and actress Elaine C Smith (Two Doors Down, Rab C Nesbitt). Elaine will step into the role during three Scottish dates in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

The award winning TV drama has been adapted for the stage by it’s creator and one of the UK’s most prolific writers, Kay Mellor, whose extensive television credits include hit series of Band of Gold, The Chase, The Syndicate, In the Club and whose stage credits include A Passionate Woman. The award-winning Jodie Prenger will lead the company in the beloved role of Kelly Stevenson with further casting to be announced.

Produced by Joshua Andrews and Adam Spiegel, with original music by Nicholas Lloyd Webber,Fat Friends – The Musical will open at Leeds Grand Theatre in November ahead of an extensive UK tour, visiting Bromley, Newcastle, Hull, Southampton, Sheffield, Southend, Milton Keynes, Norwich, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Dartford, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Glasgow, Bradford, Aberdeen and Blackpool.

Sam Bailey shot into the hearts of the nation in 2013, when the former Prison Officer won ITV’s The X Factor and reached Christmas number one with her first single, ‘Skyscraper’. She has gone on to receive public acclaim for her role as Mama Morton in the recent UK tour of Chicago.

Sam Bailey said “I’m absolutely delighted to have been cast as Betty in Fat Friends – The Musical. I loved the show when it was on ITV and I feel so honoured to be working with such a talented group of people. I know I am going to learn so much from Kay and Nicholas and I can’t wait to start rehearsals.

Elaine C Smith said “I’ve always loved Kay Mellor’s writing and work and have been a fan for years – so the chance to work on this musical version based on a TV series that I loved was just too good to miss. Kay’s writing and portrayal of women along with her great ability to tell a cracking story that moves and touches people as well as making them laugh is so good and evident in great series like The Syndicate, In the Club and the iconic Band of Gold – so her work is what all actors want to be involved in – and with great music too – what’s not to like! I know audiences will love this and I am really looking forward to being involved in such a great production.”

Kay Mellor said “I was absolutely delighted when we announced Jodie Prenger would lead the cast for Fat Friends – The Musical, she’s the perfect fit to bring Kelly to life on stage and I can’t wait to see her in action. It fills me with pride to know that the musical will be seen by audiences across the nation with such a talented cast.

“I watched every episode of The X Factor when Sam was in it, because to me she was an ordinary woman. A mother and a wife who had the voice of an angel and a wonderfully warm personality. It was one of those rare times that I actually picked up the phone and voted. I auditioned Sam for about one minute for Fat Friends the Musical – as soon as she said my words and I looked in her eyes, I knew that she understood the character of Betty. She is an instinctive actress that will bring great depth and warmth to the character.

“I first saw Elaine in Rab C Nesbit and thought she was absolutely hilarious and a genius. I saw her again when she was in the West End with my daughter Gaynor in Calendar Girls and, in fact, she came to my OBE celebration dinner! It was a complete pleasure to finally work with her in my TV series The Syndicate, and now it’s an absolute delight to work with her on stage as she plays our Superslimmer finalist and Mother of the Bride during the Scottish dates of our tour.”

With original music and songs composed by Nicholas Lloyd Webber, designed by Bretta Gerecke, musical supervision, orchestrations and arrangements from Simon Lee, sound design by two time Olivier Award winning Gareth Owen and lighting design from Tony Award nominated Nick Richings, Fat Friends – The Musical, sees the nation’s favourite group of dieters reunited as this new show bursts on to the stage.

The ‘weight’ is over; Packed full of warmth, life and weight loss, this brand new stage show reunites our favourite foodie friends in an original musical bulging with hopes, humour and heart. Join the infamous group of loveable characters as they are put through their Zumba paces at their local branch of Super Slimmer’s by the lovelorn Lauren whilst Kelly fantasises about fitting into the wedding dress of her dreams. Fat Friends offers a generous serving of hilarious fun with a sprinkle of romance on top!

Fat Friends hit television screens in October 2000, following the lives of a group of overweight friends as they struggle with the absurdities of modern dieting. Running for five years on ITV, the show starred Alison Steadman, Gaynor Faye and Lisa Riley and launched the careers of James Corden and Ruth Jones. Written by Kay Mellor, the show was nominated for multiple awards including the BAFTA for Best Drama Series.

Call For Nominations: 50/50 Applause Awards for Theatres

Call for Nominations: 2017 ICWP 50/50 Applause Award for Theatre Gender Parity Around the Globe

(The World) – Theatre industry, media and academic research in the last decade have uncovered and reported on the sometimes shocking levels of bias against female playwrights. Many professional theatres have committed to take action and demonstrate gender equity in their programming.

The International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP) is proud to sponsor the sixth annual 50/50 Applause Award, celebrating theatres which achieved gender parity among their produced playwrights within the past theatre season. The nomination window for the 2016-2017 theatrical season is open!

Co-chair of the 50/50 Applause Awards committee, Patricia L. Morin, said “ We want to applaud theatres that are showing works by women at least half the time. Theatres like the HERE Art Centre New York, the Factory Space in Sydney, Australia and the Prairie Theatre Exchange in Manitoba, Canada have met our 50/50 criteria three years in a row. We want to see more theatres following their example.”

This year’s nomination form will go live June 5th, 2017 on the ICWP website, http://www.womenplaywrights.org where you will also find links to videos, press releases, and news. Anyone may nominate eligible theatres.

The eligibility criteria have changed from previous years. Here are highlights of the new qualifying criteria:

– Have at least three productions in their season

– Have plays by both female and male dramatists in their season

– At least 50% of the plays produced between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017 are the work of female playwrights

– At least 50% of the total number of performances during that window are the work of female playwrights

– Theatres may not have the development of works by women as their main mission statement

The guidelines are available at http://www.womenplaywrights.org/award. Please contact us if you need translation assistance.

Along with artistic directors and theatre employees, the public is encouraged to nominate any theatre which meets the criteria for the award. Please share this information with your theatre friends around the world! Recipients of the 2016/17 award will be announced in September 2017.

Rehearsal Images – The Quentin Dentin Show, Tristan Bates Theatre

Tristan Bates Theatre,

1a Tower Street, London WC2H 9NP

Monday 19th June – Saturday 29th July 2017

Following a highly successful run at Above The Arts, the cult hit rock musical, The Quentin Dentin Show is back. This is The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the new Millennium.

Join the charismatic Quentin Dentin on his mission to make humanity happy. In order to demonstrate his musical therapies on his domestically unsatisfied test subjects Nat and Keith, Quentin Dentin finds his way into their world through the household radio – now a teleport for his sensational signing. Are you ready for him? If not, prepare for an appointment with the Brain Machine…

The Quentin Dentin Show has developed a cult following on its journey from London to the Edinburgh Fringe and back, on a trajectory from humble beginnings to a fully blown Off WestEnd rock musical.

With a brilliant original soundtrack, live rock band and dazzling choreography, The Quentin Dentin Show is guaranteed to make you happy or kill you trying.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This rock musical is a winner (The Upcoming).

New Director, Adam Lenson comments, I saw The Quentin Dentin Show in its previous production upstairs at the Arts Theatre and was struck by what an original, exuberant and powerful new rock musical it was. I’m thrilled to be able to work with the team to take this revised and enhanced version of the show to its new destination.

The Quentin Dentin Show is a satire on the extremes to which we’ll go to get ahead. Quentin Dentin is on a quest to find personal fulfilment, fuelled by ambition and narcissism. The show combines the song and dance of musical theatre with the really big questions.

Lazarus Theatre hits The Camden Fringe with Marlowe’s gay epic… EDWARD II

AWARD WINNING

LAZARUS THEATRE COMPANY

Lazarus Theatre’s Season of Legacy continues with the return to The Camden Fringe and The Tristan Bates Theatre for Marlowe’s gay epic Edward II.

Edward II

Christopher Marlowe

The King is dead. His son, Edward II, is crowned King. His first act: to call home from banishment his lover, Gaveston.

Why would you love him who the world hates so? Because he loves me more than all the world.”

Marlowe’s homoerotic epic comes to the stage in this all-new, all-male ensemble production. Marking 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales, this production investigates, celebrates and explores identity and sexuality.

Edward II sees our return to The Tristan Bates Theatre and The Camden Fringe after our smash hit productions of ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, Coriolanus and Tamburlaine.

Please note this production contains full male nudity and scenes of a sexual and violent nature.

Press on previous Shakespeare productions:

★★★★ “Marlowe’s irresistible cocktail of power, political intrigue… Captures the energy and epic scope of Marlowe’s game-changing play”

Female Arts on Tamburlaine

★★★★ “An excellent ensemble… Quite breathtaking… Wonderfully inventive”

Fringe Review on Dido Queen of Carthage

★★★★★ “This remains a visionary company who have once again brought us a stunning and thoughtful adaptation. Not to be missed.”

View from the Gods on Tamburlaine

Lazarus is an award-winning Theatre Company, re-imagining and revitalising classic text for a contemporary audience.

Artistic Director’s Note

We are thrilled to be returning to The Camden Fringe and to The Tristan Bates Theatre with the most remarkable gay play from the classical canon, Marlowe’s Edward II. Our 2017 season has legacy as its focus, and in the year that marks the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales and after a year of incredible political events, what better way to explore the legacy of gay representation on stage and queer theatre than Marlowe’s own investigation of homosexuality, nation and leadership. Edward II seems more pertinent than ever.”

Ricky Dukes, Artistic Director.

Will Young and Louise Redknapp to launch new Cabaret Tour

WILL YOUNG

AND LOUISE REDKNAPP

LEAD THE CAST IN

RUFUS NORRIS’ ACCLAIMED PRODUCTION OF KANDER AND EBB’S MUSICAL MASTERPIECE

CABARET

Internationally renowned singer/songwriter, Will Young, reprises his Olivier Award-nominated performance as the enigmatic Emcee alongside musician and presenter Louise Redknapp, who makes her stage debut as Sally Bowles in Rufus Norris’ multi-award winning production of CABARET.

Cabaret will embark on a UK tour this autumn, opening at the New Wimbledon Theatre on Thursday 21st September 2017 and playing theatres in Blackpool, Cardiff, Leeds, Milton Keynes, Salford, Edinburgh, Bromley and Brighton.

Ever since winning the inaugural series of Pop Idol in 2001, WILL YOUNG has been one of the UK’s most popular and successful music artists. He holds the record for the fastest selling debut single in British chart history, and has enjoyed a phenomenal career in music with 4 number 1 albums, as well as acting alongside Dame Judi Dench in the film Mrs Henderson Presents. Will made his West End debut in Cabaret and will be reprising his award winning performance.

She left the band to carve out a successful solo career achieving an impressive twelve Top 20 singles, including the hits Naked and Stuck in the Middle and selling over 5 million records with 5 albums. CABARET features show-stopping choreography, dazzling costumes and some of the most iconic songs in musical theatre including ‘Money Makes The World Go Round’, ‘Two Ladies’ ‘Maybe This Time’ and of course ‘Cabaret’. The production turns Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a sassy, sizzling haven of decadence, and at its dark heart is the legendary and notorious Emcee, who performs nightly at the infamous Kit Kat Klub.

Since its Broadway premiere in 1966 and the famous movie version with Liza Minnelli and Oscar winner Joel Grey, CABARET has won a staggering number of stage and screen awards including 8 Oscar’s, 7 BAFTA’s and 13 Tony’s. Bring On The Bollywood

Phizzical in association with Belgrade Theatre Coventry and Vivacity Key Theatre, Peterborough, present

BRING ON THE BOLLYWOOD

11 – 15 July, York Theatre Royal

Created by Samir Bhamra, the master of authentic Bollywood inspired work, Bring On The Bollywood is a brand new Bollywood dance-theatre extravaganza. Bringing a festival of colour and Bollywood magic in a major new nationwide tour, Bring On The Bollywood brings audiences new and old together for this delightfully romantic riot of Anglo-Indian exuberance.

Having lived in London for 14 years, Dr Katrina Pawar is summoned to her ancestral home, the shabby and un-chic Lakshman Villa, for her younger brother’s wedding. Sensing an opportunity to finally make a match for their last unmarried child during the festivities, Katrina’s parents search for a potential suitor for their quick-witted and resolute daughter.

As the good-looking Bollywood film director Amit arrives at Lakshman Villa, along with his newly eligible British personal assistant Ronny, Katrina must navigate the true course of love between East and West.

Inspired by classic Indian cinema, Bring On The Bollywood also revels in the shared dramatic heritage between the UK and India, as well as contemporary British Asian influences.

Samir Bhamra says: “Bollywood is widely perceived to be a low-brow art-form that requires no skill. Not only is it – in my experience – the hardest art form to crack, but it shares more than people realise with the classical Western arts. Bollywood would not exist if it were not for Shakespeare being presented in British India, and soon adapted into local languages for the wider communities. Both traditions teach us valuable lessons about people and life, and that’s why they continue to connect so well.

Bring On the Bollywood is directed by Artistic Director of Phizzical, Samir Bhamra, a multi-disciplinary artist and producer. In addition to his role as creative director of the London Asian Film Festival, Samir delivered three large scale performances during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He developed his skills at the National Theatre and was seconded to the Royal Shakespeare Company working the World Shakespeare Festival. He is a controversial judge on Just Bollywood, the UK’s leading inter-University dance competition since its inception three years ago. www.phizzical.com

Ordinary Days Review

London Theatre Workshop 29 May – 17 June.  Reviewed by Claire Roderick

Streetlights, People!’s production of Ordinary Days is a triumph of minimalism, proving that you don’t need huge sets and effects to stage a quality show. Adam Gwon’s wonderfully conversational songs and a hugely talented cast make this a memorable production, with Jen Coles nifty direction managing to create the feel of a bustling metropolis with only 4 actors.

This is a show about finding the beauty in everyday things, staged on a nearly bare set, with just a stylised New York skyline to give a sense of place. The 4 characters are all struggling to find their place in the big city. Warren (Neil Cameron – with an unbelievably assured and loveable performance on his professional debut) is a struggling artist whose major contribution to the art scene is cat sitting, but he has a glorious world view, finding joy and beauty in the simplest things. He finds a book containing the thesis notes of grad student Deb (Nora Perone) and arranges to meet her to return it. Deb is stuck in a rut with her research, and is full of vague ambition and stress. Her initial disdain develops into a sweet friendship – who could resist the lovely Warren for long? The perfect gay bestie.

Meanwhile Jason (Alistair Frederick) is moving in with his girlfriend Claire (Kirby Hughes), and she’s not really happy about it. The audience are kept in the dark about her reasons for this unwillingness to let go of the past and commit to a new relationship until the penultimate song “I’ll Be Here”, and oh boy, is it a tearjerker. Have your tissues ready for that one.

That’s about it, really. Simple, but very, very effective, and affecting. The cast keep you gripped, and are all pitch perfect. Kirby Hughes is simply magnificent as Claire, with true emotion in her voice. I promise you, she’ll break your heart. Alistair Frederick is fantastic as Jason, with his strong, smooth voice a lovely match for Hughes. Their argument duet “Fine” is a standout moment. Neil Cameron is the gentle heart of the piece, with a delightful stage presence and excellent voice, while Nora Perone is his perfect foil as the acerbic and exasperated Deb – showing her comedy chops to great effect.

Ordinary Days is a delightful, optimistic take on life, chockablock with great songs, characters and performances. Just what London needs right now, a perfect pick-me-up that will fill your heart with joy. A hidden gem – go and see it while you can.
