50^TH ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION COMING TO THE EDINBURGH PLAYHOUSE

Following the critically- acclaimed 50th anniversary production of Hair, The Musical at Hope Mill Theatre and sell-out transfer to The Vaults, London, the celebrated production will now embark on a nationwide tour – including a visit to the Edinburgh Playhouse from 22-27 June 2019.

This award-winning production (2018 WhatsOnStage Award – Best Off-West End Production) will open at the New Wimbledon Theatre on 22 March 2019, with national press night on 28 March, before visiting Cheltenham, Manchester, Cardiff, Plymouth, Birmingham, Sunderland, Dartford, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Edinburgh, Oxford, Sheffield, Brighton and Milton Keynes, with further dates to be announced in due course.

Welcome to the ‘Age of Aquarius’.

It’s 1967 and HAIR’s hippie ‘tribe’ youngsters in the East Village of New York are yearning to change the world, questioning authority and the American flag. Wild, colourful, sexually liberated and free, they are united in protest and song, under the shadow of the Vietnam War.

Hair, which is adored for its Grammy award-winning score featuring iconic hits such as ‘Aquarius’, ‘Let the Sun Shine In’, ‘I Got Life’ and ‘Good Morning Starshine’ is written by Gerome Ragni (book and lyrics), James Rado (book and lyrics) and Galt MacDermot (music).

The 50th anniversary production is directed by Jonathan O’Boyle (Pippin, Rain Man, Aspects Of Love), who is reunited with the brilliant creative team from Hope Mill Theatre: Gareth Bretherton (Musical Director), William Whelton (Choreographer), Maeve Black (Designer), Ben M Rogers (Lighting Designer), Calum Robinson (Sound Designer) and producers Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment,Joseph Houston and William Whelton for Hope Mill Theatre, Ollie Rosenblatt for Senbla, and associate producer Guy James.

The production will be cast by the previous BBC Head of Casting Jane Deitch, and will be announced in due course.

The Above & Beyond Festival
October 22nd – 24th, Plymouth Libraries

Popular Plymouth based theatre Company go Above and Beyond to bring you the best children’s shows from across the country in their new Half-Term Theatre Festival, for all the Family!

Above Bounds, who have proved a firm favourite amongst Plymouth’s families, return to Plymouth Libraries this October half term; but they’re not alone. Above & Beyond is Plymouth’s new family theatre festival featuring some of the UK’s best and most innovative companies producing shows for children. Taking place on 3 days, at a different library each day, there’s certainly something for everyone.

The festival kicks off on the 22nd October at Plympton Library with Oily Cart associate artists, Feel Theatre and their Sensory Circus. Ditto Theatre Company bring their touching debut show, Ingo’s War, which saw them winners of the 2017 Reviews Hub: Beyond the Fringe award. Exeter favourites, Paddleboat Theatre Company will entertain audiences in Plymstock on the 23rd with a preview of their newest production, Hansel & Gretel before it performs at Exeter Northcott this Christmas!

Besides the amazing programme of theatre, there’s plenty to entertain the little ones in the Libraries, as Above & Beyond will feature face painting, craft workshops and live music throughout the 3 day event.

Producing a festival is something of a new venture for Above Bounds, founded by Actor-Producer Helen Bovey and Actor-Playwright George Boundy. Thanks to support from The National Lottery Project grants through Arts Council England and funding from The Elmgrant Trust, the team will be able to bring first class theatre and performance for families at Plympton, Plymstock and Southway Libraries.

Helen Bovey said: “We have had the ambition to run our own theatre festival for a long time now and the hugely positive response we have had working with children and families at Plymouth Libraries this year has spurred us on to make Above & Beyond a reality. There’s a good mix of shows offering something for everyone and lots of fun to be had in the library too.”

Above & Beyond will also feature sensory performances from Collar & Cuffs, whose Little Meerkat’s Big Panic, is based on Jane Evan’s book for young children about understanding and managing anxiety. Described as, ‘Monty Python for kids’ by Children’s Theatre Reviews, Oliver Harrison’s clown masterpiece, Signor Baffo will close the festival at Southway Library on the 24th October.

It’s a cats life for Jascha Kempf, the Grand Opera House German intern. Jascha is scaling new heights in the lead up to Pick Me Up Theatre’s production of Cats, which comes to the venue this November.  Jascha will be in York, learning all about the theatre, from marketing to front of house and technical, until December.

One of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history – the original production played at the New London Theatre for 21 years.

Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the musical tells the stories of the Jellicle Cats who come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball.

the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.

One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

The score includes the show-stopping Memory, which was a big hit for Barbra Streisand, as well as Elaine Paige, who played Grizabella in the original West End production.

Wilton’s Music Hall, the oldest grand music hall in the world, today announces its 2019 Spring season – a glorious collection of theatre, and music from some of the UK’s most exceptional companies and artists.

What if you could see pain, as well as feeling it? What if it were reflected in colour, and shapes, so that other people could experience how you felt? Director Rachel Bagshaw and Royal Exchange Associate Chris Thorpe’s unique, disconcerting and touching one-woman show The Shape of the Pain(19 – 23 March) looks at physical suffering with no apparent cause, conditions that aren’t recognised by medical professionals but which destroy lives. A Fringe First Award winner in 2017 and with an original score by the award-winning Melanie Wilson, the production uses light and sound to explore the way we talk about pain and understand it better.

As Britain leaves the EU, the Iron Lady herself hits the Wilton’s stage for the very first time in Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho (26 – 30 March) in her full outrageous cabaret glory. In this smash hit drag extravaganza, diva Maggie gets lost in Soho on the eve of the crucial Section 28 vote and accidentally becomes a cabaret superstar – will she change her mind about the homophobic bill before it’s too late?  A big, beautiful, gay adventure about LGBT rights, the 80s and disco created by Olivier Award winner Jon Brittain and performer Matt Tedford, it’s politics, glitter and riotous romping at its very finest. There will be a special one-off club night Margaret Thatcher Queen of Club Nights on the night of Brexit itself (29 March), featuring non-stop 80s hits, dance-offs, lip-sync battles and more.

Wilton’s is delighted to host the London premiere of a staggeringly beautiful new show Camille O’ Sullivan – Cave (9 – 13 April) produced by Wales Millennium Centre as part of the Festival of Voice 2018. Returning to the stage of her musical home, this run will see the mesmerizing chanteuse perform the songs of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, exploring the dark and the light of their music in her dangerous yet fragile theatrical style. Recently voted one of Later…with Jools Holland’s top 25 performances of all time by The Telegraph, Camille enjoys a formidable international reputation worldwide for her intensely beautiful and emotional shows.

Regan De Wynter Williams’ award-winning and hilariously funny take on the much-loved classic The Pirates of Penzance (20 February – 16 March) arrives at Wilton’s fresh from a hugely popular tour in Australia, which saw the production play Cate Blanchett’s Sydney Theatre. Now back in London, the all-male cast effervescently and joyously tell Gilbert and Sullivan’s much-loved tale of a child adopted by a band of tender-hearted orphaned pirates in an inventive and brilliant night of theatre.

From a revival of an opera classic to an insanely brilliant fusion of two more, the Olivier Award-winning Godfathers of alterative cabaret, The Tiger Lillies, will celebrate their 30^th birthday with the premiere of a new concert One Penny Opera (2 – 6 April), bringing their dark and sardonic world back to Wilton’s with their own mash-up of John Gay and Brecht’s Beggar’s Opera and Weill’s Threepenny Opera. Glasgow songbird Christine Bovill will also grace the East London stage, as she transports audiences into a Parisian twilight world of song with her new show Christine Bovill’s Paris (29 January – 2 February).

Legendary comic Omid Djalli will make his Wilton’s debut with his show Schmuck for a Night (15 – 19 January), and, celebrating 50 years of the legendary sitcom, James Seabright’s Dad’s Army Radio Show (22 – 26 January) sees a brilliant staging of three classic radio episodes based on favourite scripts from the original TV series. Poet in the City presents Rumi: The Universe in Ecstatic Motion (11 February), bringing an exploration of Rumi’s poetry on the subject of love, returning with Audre Lorde: Sister Outsider (15 April), an empowering evening of live poetry performances celebrating the radical pioneer of intersectional feminism.

Defying all the laws of live comedy, The Good, The Bad and The Fifty: The 12^th Annual London 50-Hour Improvathon returns (15 – 17 February), showcasing some of the world’s best improvisers as they bring their comedy soap opera to the Wild West of Wilton’s. Hypnotist Luke Jermay also makes a return appearance, this time with his brand-new interactive stage show Intuition (5 February) jam-packed with jaw-dropping demonstrations of intuition, telepathy and prediction. And back with even more wonderful tales and music from fascinating people is OneTrackMinds (6 – 7 February), two captivating nights of sound and storytelling as a panel of guests discuss the one song that changed their life.

A third wish granted! Lee Ryan swaps the ballroom for a magic carpet to star in Aladdin at New Wimbledon Theatre this festive season!

Having temporarily hung up his dancing shoes and left the Strictly dancefloor, New Wimbledon Theatre are delighted to announce that boyband and television star Lee Ryan will be the handsome hero Aladdin in this year’s wish-filled, must-see SW19 pantomime from 8 December.

Since joining the BRIT award-winning boyband Blue in 2001, Lee and his bandmates went on to sell over 14 million records worldwide, releasing five critically acclaimed studio albums and headlined several UK tours. The band released hit after hit, including All Rise, One Love, If You Come Back and Fly By, collaborating with the likes of Sir Elton John and Stevie Wonder along the way and winning legions of fans the world over.

In 2011, to coincide with their tenth year in the music industry, Blue represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest with their entry I Can. In 2013 Blue were a featured addition to the ITV2 reality television show The Big Reunion, which culminated in a sold out performance at the Hammersmith Apollo.

Since then Lee, who trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts starred as Woody Woodward in EastEnders for the BBC, a role which won him the Inside Soap Award for Best Newcomer. Earlier this year he participated in the sixteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing for the BBC opposite professional dancer Nadiya Bychkova. Despite impressing with their Waltz, Jive and Cha-Cha-Cha, Lee and Nadiya quickstepped out of the competition on Sunday’s result show.

Speaking on his starring role in Aladdin at New Wimbledon Theatre Lee said: “I had an incredible time on Strictly and I’m sad to have left the competition, but on the plus side it means I can finally reveal my plans for Christmas, playing Aladdin in pantomime. This will be my third panto and I absolutely love it, and I’m sure there’ll be more dance moves in store for me as I dance around Old Peking.”

Lee joins Have I Got News For You stalwart and comedy star Paul Merton as Widow Twankey, alongside leading funny man, magician and television regular Pete Firman as his brother Wishee Washee. They will be joined by leading ladies Linda John Pierre and Lauren Chia as The Empress and Princess Jasmine, with Adam Pearce as Abanazar and Josh Donovan, Maria Crawford Clarke, Isaac Hesketh, Sarah Marie Maxwell, Jessica Oakman, Georgia Reid and Michael Stewart. Aladdin will be directed by Kerry Michael MBE, with choreography by Mitch Sebastian, with featured special effects by The Twins FX and an eye-popping 3D sequence which will transport audiences on a truly magical carpet ride.

New Wimbledon theatre Director Nick Parr said: “We are delighted Lee Ryan completes the cast as our hero Aladdin, we are now ready to take a magic carpet ride to the best show in Merton this Christmas!”

With tickets selling fast, audiences shouldn’t leave it any longer to secure their tickets for the pantomime everyone wishes for, Aladdin, which runs from Saturday 8 December 2018 to Sunday 6 January 2019.

The record breaking Dirty Dancing has hit York once again with its current tour. Everyone, well nearly everyone, knows the beloved film, set in the Catskill Mountains at Kellermans, in the summer of 1963. This classic tale revolves around Frances “Baby” (Kira Malou) and Johnny Castle (Michael O’Reilly making his professional debut) having the time of their lives, but did this excitable audience have the time of theirs?

Whilst we first met Baby and her family arriving at Kellermans, there was an eager anticipation within the audience, of predominately woman, waiting for their first glance of Johnny. We didn’t have to wait too long to see him dancing in his very, very tight trousers, much to the audience’s delight. I’m still convinced that he had borrowed them from someone else after having a wardrobe malfunction, they were that tight and just a wee bit too short, I digress…

Malou, complete with the mop of curly hair, plays Baby with a kooky sweet innocence, growing from awkward teenager into a confident young woman. O’Reilly certainly has huge shoes to fill, following in Patrick Swayze’s footsteps. It must be such a daunting prospect, especially considering this is his first professional role, but what an opportunity. At times during the first act I felt that he needed to put his own identity into his character and not try too hard to emulate Swayze, he just seemed a little stilted. By the second act O’Reilly was a lot more comfortable and was Johnny Castle, and then the chemistry between the two certainly sizzled.

The choreography throughout is exhilarating and mesmerising, performed with such enthusiasm by the talented cast. Simone Covele is wonderful as Penny, with those high kicks and oh what flexibility, you can’t take your eyes off her when she is dancing. Lizzie Ottley delivered a great comic turn as Lisa during her Hula Hana song, and had the audience in stitches.

There was a bit of an issue with the set, that saw the curtains come down for a short while, where we could hear hammers and drills in action. I believe this may be due to the York stage being one of the smaller stages on their run. There were a few hiccups during the performance and the cast amiably carried on. Even with these slight hitches the set was effective with moving buildings and rotating rooms.

Dirty Dancing is not really a musical, more a play with a bit of live singing, some recorded songs and quite a bit of superb dancing, some of it “dirty”. It is certainly a play to make you smile, I could feel myself grinning virtually the whole time. The audience appreciation of a very muscular O’Reilly, as Johnny, taking his shirt off and then bearing a naked bottom were sounds to behold, a whole lot of whooping and cat calling, not by me of course?.

Dirty Dancing does not disappoint, what with “I’ve carried a watermelon”, “nobody puts baby in a corner” and that iconic lift. Try and catch it if you can and see if you can “have the time of your life”.

1,000 West End Stage students to record A Million Dreams

in aid of NSPCC Childline, now on iTunes 

Kerry Ellis, star of the West End and Broadway, has teamed up with 1,000 West End Stage students, for a special charity fundraising recording of A Million Dreams from the hit film, The Greatest Showman.

All proceeds will go to the NSPCC’s Childline service (0800 1111), which is there to give young people a voice when no one else is listening. Whatever problems or dangers they are facing, Childline is a place for them to turn for support – any time of day or night.

 

West End Stage launched in 2006 in a bid to become the UK’s leading theatre summer school by igniting a global passion for theatre. Throughout the week-long course, students take part in drama, singing and dance classes led by West End stars, and then make their own West End debut in a showcase at Her Majesty’s Theatre. This year’s students, who all took part in the recording, ranged from just 8 years old through to 21, with 26% of them attending from outside the UK, from 52 different countries as far away as Australia, Cambodia and Indonesia. 

 

Kerry Ellis, who is the Patron of West End Stage, has played many lead roles in shows in the West End and on Broadway including We Will Rock You, Oliver!, My Fair Lady, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Cats and Rent.

 

Mark Puddle, Chief Executive of West End Stage, said: “This year marked our 10,000th West End Stage student, and we wanted to do something fitting to celebrate that. The charity recording was an opportunity to channel 1,000 young voices to raise funds and awareness for Childline, hopefully inspiring and empowering others. Childline’s services help the same demographic of students that attends West End Stage, and at our summer schools we encourage an inclusive atmosphere where everyone can be themselves, be supported, and where no one is alone.”

New Adventures is delighted to announce the world premiere of Matthew Bourne’s “ROMEO AND JULIET” opening at Curve, Leicester on Monday 13 May 2019, as part of a UK tour to 13 venues including a four-week summer season at Sadler’s Wells from Wednesday 7 August to Saturday 31 August 2019. Matthew Bourne’s “ROMEO AND JULIET” is a passionate and contemporary re-imagining of Shakespeare’s classic love story. Bursting with youth, vitality and Matthew Bourne’s trademark storytelling, Britain’s brightest young dance talent join the New Adventures company for this World Premiere production. Directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne, collaborating with his entire New Adventures Associate Artistic team; Etta Murfitt, Associate Artistic Director, set and costume design by Lez Brotherston; lighting by Paule Constable; sound by Paul Groothuis; and new orchestrations of the Prokofiev score by Terry Davies, played live by the New Adventures Orchestra and conducted by Brett Morris.

As part of New Adventures’ ambition to support the next generation of on-stage talent and inspired by the success of “Lord of the Flies” in 2014, which combined professional dancers and young men with little or no dance experience, “ROMEO AND JULIET” will feature the finest emerging male and female dancers from around the UK. The search began in April 2018 with a call-out for the next generation of young dancers currently in training aged between 16 and 19. Attracting over 1000 applications and following a UK-wide audition tour, six Young Cast members at each venue will perform alongside the New Adventures company. This unique opportunity will nurture and develop young talent with a view to them embarking on a career in dance.

Matthew Bourne said today “New Adventures’ Romeo and Juliet will be a celebration of youthful energy, talent and creativity both on and off-stage and, uniquely, in all aspects of Choreography, Design and Music through the appointment of a series of “Young Associate Artists”.   As we enter our fourth decade as a company, I’m finding the development of young talent ever more important and fulfilling. Our current company of “Swan Lake” features 29 young dancers making their debuts with us, many of those have come through our Company initiatives such as “Swan School”, “A Summer Adventure” and of course, our production of “Lord of the Flies” which inspired so many young men to seek careers in dance. This time we are focusing on nurturing young male and female dancers, and I have been overwhelmed by the talent that we have had to choose from throughout the UK. I’m particularly happy to be working alongside my Young Associate Choreographer, Arielle Smith, an exceptional young dancemaker of great maturity and vision. In turn, after 30 years as a professional choreographer, I look forward to being refreshed and inspired by what this team of young artists will bring to Shakespeare’s classic tale of tragic conflict and young love”. 

The title roles of ‘Romeo’ and ‘Juliet’ will be played by six New Adventures rising stars and two exciting new dancers making their professional debuts.

‘Juliet’ will be played by Cordelia Braithwaite, currently performing as ‘Cinderella’ on the international tour; Seren Williams, who joined the company in 2016 with Matthew Bourne’s award-winning production of “The Red Shoes” and Bryony Harrison who is making her debut with New Adventures on tour with Matthew Bourne’s legendary production of “Swan Lake”.

‘Romeo’ will be performed by Andrew Monaghan, currently ‘The Pilot’ in “Cinderella”, Paris Fitzpatrick who is playing the ‘Angel’ in “Cinderella” and João Carolino who joined the company in 2017 with “Early Adventures”.

Making their professional debuts with the company are Harrison Dowzell, as ‘Romeo’, who auditioned for the Young Cast in Nottingham, and Bryony Wood, as ‘Juliet’, discovered during the Young Cast auditions in Southampton. Both are in their graduate years at Performers College and Tring Park School for the Performing Arts respectively. New Adventures is working in partnership with both vocational colleges to support the completion of their training during the tour.

Continuing New Adventures’ commitment to developing off-stage talent we have recruited a team of Young Associate Artists to work alongside the Artistic team in the creation of this world premiere production. Arielle Smith joins as Young Associate Choreographer; Elin Steele as Young Associate Set & Costume Designer and Ali Hunter as Young Associate Lighting Designer. Further Young Associates will also be appointed in the Sound and Music departments.

THE RENOWNED STEPHEN JOSEPH THEATRE IN SCARBOROUGH HAS PARTNERED WITH COVENTRY UNIVERSITY, A LEADING UK MODERN UNIVERSITY, TO INTRODUCE A RADICAL NEW BA (HONS) DEGREE IN ACTING.

FREE AUDITION PROCESS CONFIRMED

 

Scarborough’s renowned Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT) has partnered with CU Scarborough, Coventry University’s campus on the Yorkshire coast, to introduce a radical new BA (Hons) Acting degree.

Commencing in September 2019, the three-year course will train students in acting for stage, T.V. and radio as well as introducing them to various non-traditional techniques such as presenting, corporate role-play, vlogging and acting for gaming.

Created through an innovative partnership with a prominent regional producing theatre, the degree curriculum will enable regular visits to the Stephen Joseph Theatre, giving students the opportunity to gain experience of acting through masterclasses with the Artistic Director, associate directors and other freelance professionals. They will also receive mentoring by SJT’s staff on the inner-workings of a regional theatre including marketing, producing, fundraising, and technical and stage management. In their third year, students will have the opportunity to audition for the SJT to be part of a professional acting company.

In a bid to champion access for all, this degree will introduce a dynamic new auditioning process which will be free to prospective students, removing some of the early financial barriers experienced by prospective drama students.

Paul Robinson, Artistic Director at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, said:

“This exciting new course, with dynamic and free audition methods is aimed at the non-traditional actor for whom access to training may have previously been prohibitive.

“There’s been much talk about making access to acting training more affordable but we still see drama schools charging an average of £60/£70, and often more, for auditions. Our course will see the first round of self-taped audition speeches – on, for instance, a smartphone – allowing us to keep the audition process manageable, free and appropriate by employing the contemporary digital techniques that are becoming more and more a part of our standard industry practice.

While the acting and vocal training will be on a par with the best drama schools, there will also be training in radio and TV acting and presenting, corporate role-play, gaming, and even vlogging – all ways in which the contemporary actor can find employment.

This will be a forward-thinking, relevant curriculum. We have designed the course to reflect the contemporary acting world, not a stuffy one from a bygone era.”

We know that access to formal training has been financially prohibitive for many people and that has resulted in an industry that does not necessarily reflect the socio-economic diversity of our country. If we are serious about the diversity of the voices in our sector, then we need to address this at the earliest possible opportunity. Our partnership with Coventry University is borne out of a set of shared values around diversity and inclusivity. We will ensure that students receive the best possible training and that they will get the chance to see their future industry in action. Access to a working producing theatre will provide a level of insight often missing in formal training, it will allow students to identify innovative routes into the profession and begin thinking about the shape of their careers earlier.
