Pride and Prejudice Review

Hull Truck Theatre – until Saturday 11th October 2025

Reviewed by Dawn Bennett

5*****

Hull Truck Theatre, Octagon Theatre Bolton, Theatre by the Lake, Stephen Joseph Theatre in association with Theatr Clwyd present Jane Austen’s sparkling romantic comedy Pride and Prejudice.

Adapted from the novel by Jane Austen by Kate Hamill, Pride and Prejudice was as every bit as fabulous as I thought it would be. Hull Truck have a knack of putting on productions that appeal to a wide range of theatre goers and Pride and Prejudice is no exception. If you’ve read the book, seen the film or the television series you will of course know the story but this adaptation is very funny the actors (some of them playing more than one part) are brilliant and there are some wonderful nods to the 1800’s take on manners, and how daughters of the family should marry well.

Mrs Bennet (Joanna Holden) and Mr Bennet (Dyfrig Morris) have four daughters Jane (Aamira Challenger), Lydia (Jessica Ellis), Elizabeth (Rosa Hesmondhalgh) and Mary (Eve Pereira). Mrs Bennet’s only wish is that her daughters marry well and that they marry someone with money. Unfortunately, her daughters won’t inherit anything on the death of their father as the estate goes to their nearest male relative, distant cousin Mr Collins (Ben Fensome). Mr Bingley (Eve Pereira) moves into the nearest estate and Mrs Bennet sets her sights on him for one of her daughters and as he’s worth £5000 a year she’s not bothered which one. Mr Bingley brings with him his sister Charlotte (Kiara Nicole Pillai) who looks down on the Bennet sisters. With the arrival of Mr Darcy (James Sheldon) owner of another nearby estate (this one worth £10,000 a year!) this soon wakes up the interest of Mrs Bennet and then the fun starts. With lots twists and turns, it shows that the path of true love never runs smoothly!

It is difficult to single out one particular actor as they were all fabulous. However, Ben Fensome, who played Mr Collins (and Mr Wickenham) was superb. His comic timing and facial expressions had the audience in fits of laughter.

I really enjoyed the production, it was joyous, fabulously acted and very, very funny. Yet another outstanding production at Hull Truck Theatre.

The Gardening Club Review

 Wimbledon Studio – until 27th September 2025

Reviewed by Carly

Wimbledon brings you the story of The Gardening Club set in Georgia USA, in the 1960’s when choice isn’t an option for young females regarding the contraceptive pill, only available to those that are married! (Can’t get the pill without the ring!) A group of five women decide to join forces to help the women of Georgia have a choice over their bodies without feeling shame. They secretly decide to form a gardening club, where they can sell the pills as seeds – sworn to secrecy between one another and the promise to keep it under the radar!  There’s Pheobie (Emma Wallace) who want to become a powerful journalist. She’s working as a receptionist at an all-male newspaper office, a struggle in-itself and feels she is never heard! Betty, (Olivia Taylor Quinn) a nurse who is a loyal friend and has a source close to the distribution of the contraceptive pill! Shelia, (Hannah Greensmith) a housewife who seems to have it all… But does she? Maggie (Emma Espada) a teenager who talks about her experiences with sex and doesn’t want to feel ashamed but only wants to embrace it! Vicky, (Lola Garlick) Maggie’s younger sister who loves books and hides from the world. Eventually, we see her imagination come to life! To get the ball rolling they all decide to put an ad in the newspaper sneakily. Soon enough the calls begin to come in taking them on a journey they never thought possible.

I loved how the songs take you through the individual stories of the characters with so many sexual innuendos that had the audience in stiches on many occasions. As well as some very touching heartfelt tender topics and emotional scenes regarding loneliness, abortions, death and taking back control! What is obvious is the true friendship that is formed between these girls and how they go on to continue fighting for their rights!

This production was just outstanding, and I can most certainly see it going to the bigger theatres. The songs were just fantastic with the whole show being powerful, fearless, full of self-discovery, rebellion a lot of fun thrown in and strong female bonds that appear unbreakable fighting for reproductive rights. Just an amazing show from start to finish and one that definitely shouldn’t be missed!

JUDITH DIMANT PRODUCTIONS TODAY ANNOUNCES SH!T THEATRE’S EVITA TOO A MUSICAL ABOUT ISABEL PERÓN, THE FIRST EVER FEMALE PRESIDENT

“We found Isabel Perón during a late-night Wikipedia binge – the world’s first female president who went from nightclub dancer to running Argentina, kept Evita’s corpse hanging in her dining room, survived coups and literal wizards… then somehow got completely erased from history. We became obsessed with her story, travelled to Argentina to investigate, failed miserably, and turned the whole disaster into a mega-musical sequel no one asked for. It’s about power, women, and the strange ways history remembers – or forgets – them.”

JUDITH DIMANT PRODUCTIONS TODAY ANNOUNCES

SH!T THEATRE’S EVITA TOO

A MUSICAL ABOUT ISABEL PERÓN,

THE FIRST EVER FEMALE PRESIDENT

The face-painted duo and Fringe favourites behind some of the UK’s most chaotic theatre are back with their trademark blend of research trips, political engagement, humour and comedy. Rebecca Biscuit and Louise Mothersole have transformed their fact-finding mission to Argentina into a barmy celebration of history’s most forgotten female leader.

Following a first season in 2022, Judith Dimant Productions, supported by the Southbank Centre, today announce a revised and expanded production of Sh!t Theatre’s EVITA TOO which will open at the Southbank Centre for a limited run.

EVITA TOO looks at forgotten female presidents, notably the first woman president in the world, populism, and legacy. With the pairs’ signature collage of DIY documentary and original songs, this Fringe First Award winner proves that Sh!t Theatre can turn the most obscure historical footnotes into theatre.

Directed by Ursula Martinez with original music by Sh!t Theatre, this is what happens when research procrastination becomes an art form and history’s wrongs get righted through theatrical anarchy.

EVITA TOO opens at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room on 11 December, with previews from 9 December and runs until 31 December.

Sh!t Theatre return to the first ever two-woman performance art mega musical about the first ever female president of a country in the history of the world, and her name is…?

Join disco dictators Becca and Louise for the wild story of Isabel Peron, Gogo dancer turned president, who led Argentina for 18 disastrous months before being overthrown in a military coup.

During the reign of the first ever female president of a country in the history of the world, Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice were writing their first blockbuster musical about President Isabel Peron’s dead husband’s even deader ex-wife. And now, nobody remembers Isabel.

EVITA TOO tells Isabel’s shocking story and the story of Sh!t Theatre who, discovering she is still alive, travel across Argentina and Spain in search of the mysterious recluse who is living in Madrid.

Becca and Louise save the footage they’ve taken on their trip, delve into some archives and make a musical to match Tim and Andrew’s, while finding that their lives and Isabel’s life surprisingly and tragically intertwine.

Sh!t Theatre are Rebecca Biscuit and Louise Mothersole. They have been working and drinking together for 15 years. They make politically engaged live performance with a DIY aesthetic using a collage of documentary, song, comedy and multimedia. They research, write and perform their own work – their shows have received numerous awards and four-and five-star reviews in the national and international press. Awards include Two Lustrum Awards (celebrating excellence at the Edinburgh Fringe), Off West End IDEA Award for Best Performance 2023, The Holden Street Theatre Award, Adelaide Fringe Best Theatre Award 2020, Critics Circle Award, Sydney Fringe Best Theatre Award 2024, and two Scotsman Fringe First Awards 2016 and 2019.

Mail on Sunday

The multi award-winning hit production is now running on both sides of the Atlantic, having opened on Broadway earlier this year. Its numerous accolades in London include the Olivier Awards for Best Entertainment and Best Set Design, the Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Set Design and Most Promising Newcomer, and the WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Play. On Broadway the play became the most nominated of the 2025 season, winning 4 Tony Awards including a special Tony Award for Illusions and Technical Effects. The Broadway production is currently booking tickets through March 2026 at The Marquis Theater.

Earlier this year, Netflix released the official documentary, Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which offers an electrifying look backstage during the making of the critically acclaimed, award-winning play in the lead up to its world premiere at London’s Phoenix Theatre in December 2023. It is available to watch now exclusively on Netflix.

New musical BANK OF DAVE to open in 2026

FROM BURNLEY TO BROADWAY!

WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTION OF

BANK OF DAVE THE MUSICAL

TO OPEN IN MAY 2026

PLAYING AT

LOWRY IN SALFORD &

CURVE IN LEICESTER

Producers ROYO, Future Artists Entertainment, Curve and Lowry are delighted to announce the world premiere of BANK OF DAVE THE MUSICAL will open in May 2026 at Lowry and Curve respectively. The musical will have a book and lyrics by Rob Madge (My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?), Cabaret), music and lyrics by Pippa Cleary (The Great British Bake Off Musical, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾ ) and will be directed by Curve Artistic Director Nikolai Foster (Kinky Boots, A Chorus Line).

Tickets at Lowry are on sale from 24 September.

Tickets at Curve are on sale from 7 October.

BANK OF DAVE THE MUSICAL is based on the Sunday Times best-selling book, BAFTA Award-winning documentary and global-hit Netflix film of the same name with a screenplay by Piers Ashworth.

Casting and further creatives to be announced.

“If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s this: everybody hates bankers.”

BANK OF DAVE THE MUSICAL is a home-grown, brand-new British musical – bursting with northern grit, laugh-out-loud humour and what Dave himself calls “the best songs in any musical ever.”

This feel-good show tells the true-ish story of Dave Fishwick: Burnley born and bred, and no ordinary man. A self-made millionaire, Dave spent years helping local people and small businesses when hard-nosed banks turned them away. Frustrated by the system, he has an idea…set up his own bank and put the profits straight back into his community.

With posh but principled lawyer Hugh at his side, Dave swaps Burnley for London to take on the banking bigwigs and fight for a fairer deal. But will the fat cats of the City make way for Dave’s dreams?

From Sunday Times bestseller to Netflix’s #1 UK film, Dave’s inspiring underdog story now bursts onto the stage as a laugh-out-loud British musical packed with heart, humour and cracking new music.

‘The humour of The Full Monty with the spirit of Billy Elliot, but with a few more ba*tard bankers, and an unlikely hero from Burnley!’ – Dave Fishwick

Dave Fishwick said about the musical “This all feels very surreal! I left school at 16, absolutely useless with no qualifications whatsoever. I started work on a building site as a builders’ labourer, and went from builders’ labourer to building the first new high street bank for 150 years in Britain. Then Hollywood turned up, not just once but twice! And now the magical world of theatre has arrived; from Burnley to Broadway – via the magnificent Lowry in Salford and Curve in Leicester first of course! Watching myself on telly was unbelievable; however, watching someone play me live on stage will be totally surreal. I am just an ordinary lad from Burnley, who does extraordinary things, and if I can make it happen, you can too!. Always have the courage to follow your dreams!”

Rob Madge said: “A couple of years ago Pippa Cleary and I were asked to turn Dave Fishwick’s inspirational story into a musical (I know! You weren’t expecting that, were you? But, much like Miss Saigon, Dave too has a helicopter, so a musical seemed a natural fit). Safe to say, it has been nothing short of a joy. I am deeply proud to be telling this special tale of community, hope and perseverance. In a world that seems more fractured every day, I am so thrilled to be offering an alternative where our Dave and his brilliant company of players can help mend the broken pieces. As he himself would say, rule number 1: never give up. Rule number 2: never, ever give up.”

Pippa Cleary added “I couldn’t be more thrilled to be developing this brand-new musical with the amazing Rob Madge. The whole process has been filled with laughter and a real sense of purpose, just like Dave’s story itself. Writing these songs has been such a joy, capturing the humour, grit and heart that makes this tale so uniquely British. We’ve had an absolute blast bringing Dave’s fight for fairness to life, and I can’t wait for audiences to experience it for themselves next year.”

BANK OF DAVE THE MUSICAL is produced by ROYO, Future Artists Entertainment, Curve and Lowry. Katie Lander is the consultant for Finestripe Productions.

It was announced today, Monday 15th September, that the double Olivier Award® and Tony Award®-winning musical Operation Mincemeat is extending its run at the West End’s Fortune Theatre for the 16th time. Recently celebrating its 1000th West End performance, the show has grown from a 77-seater fringe debut to a global hit and will now run until 30th May 2026.

West End Extension tickets are available on General sale on Friday 3rd October at 10am from the Official Box Office here and tickets via the ballot are available on Thursday 2nd October at 2pm. Broadway tickets and more info here.

Following the success of the Monday ballot, it has now expanded to include Tuesday and Saturday shows to ensure tickets get into the right hands. Tickets for Monday are priced at £49.50, and the popular fortnightly £25 ticket lottery continues here. The first ballot draw for the new booking period from 2nd March to 30th May 2026 will take place on Thursday 2nd October at 2pm. Link here.

Operation Mincemeat is running simultaneously in London and New York, with the Broadway production confirming its third extension at the John Golden Theatre through to 15th February 2026. 2026 will also see Operation Mincemeat’s global takeover, with the landmark Operation Mincemeat World Tour, recently announced outside the United Nations building in New York City. The world tour begins with a 40-week UK leg on 16th February 2026, at Lowry in Salford, UK – the venue that first encouraged the Olivier Award® -winning and Tony Award® -nominated writing team to create their debut musical. From there, the production will travel across four continents, with stops including the USAAustraliaCandaChinaMexico and New Zealand.

Operation Mincemeat began as a tiny (and tiny-budgeted) production at the London Fringe New Diorama Theatre in 2019. The show quickly gained a devoted following, spurring sold-out runs at venues including Southwark Playhouse and Riverside Studios. It finally premiered in the West End on 9th May 2023 at the Fortune Theatre, where it won the Olivier and WhatsOnstage Awards® for ‘Best New Musical’, alongside garnering 87 five-star reviews and counting, and has become the ‘Best reviewed show in West End history.’

The decision to write the musical was the last roll of the dice from a quartet of young British creatives after years of performing sketch shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and echoes the journey of Beyond the Fringe from the world-famous quartet Alan BennettPeter CookJonathan Miller, and Dudley Moore, which premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1960, before moving to the Fortune Theatre and later to the Golden in 1962.

In Operation Mincemeat, it’s 1943, and the Allied Forces are on the ropes. Luckily, they’ve got a trick up their sleeve. Well, not up their sleeve, per se, but rather inside the pocket of a stolen corpse. Equal parts farce, thriller, and Ian Fleming-style spy caper (with an assist from Mr. Fleming himself), Operation Mincemeat tells the wildly improbable and hilarious true story of the covert operation that turned the tide of WWII.

The production is directed by 2023 Olivier Award nominated  Robert Hastie (Standing at the Sky’s Edge, National Theatre – 2023 Best New Musical Olivier Award winner), following providing directorial support for the Riverside Studios run, while Olivier Award nominated Jenny Arnold (Jerry Springer: The Opera, National Theatre) continues as Choreographer. Also from Standing at the Sky’s Edge at the National Theatre on the creative team are: 2023 Olivier Award nominated  Ben Stones (Sylvia, The Old Vic) as Set and Costume Designer, Tony Award, six-time Olivier Award and Bafta Award winning Mark Henderson (Girl From the North Country, Broadway & Noël Coward Theatre) as Lighting Designer and Olivier Award winning Mike Walker (Jerry Springer: The Opera, National Theatre) as Sound Designer.  Grammy Award winning and Tony, Emmy & 2024 ‘Outstanding Musical Contribution’ Olivier Award nominated Steve Sidwell (Beautiful: The Musical, Broadway & Aldwych Theatre) is Orchestrator and Vocal Arranger, while 2024 ‘Outstanding Musical Contribution’ Olivier Award nominated Joe Bunker is Musical Supervisor and Ben Cox is Musical Director. Georgie Staight and Amy Milburn are Associate Directors and Paul Isaiah Isles is Associate Choreographer. Casting is by Pearson Casting. The extraordinary debut musical is written and composed by SpitLip – David CummingFelix HaganNatasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts.

Alex Young (Stranger Things: The First ShadowStanding at the Sky’s EdgeInto the Woods), Danny Becker (FrozenThe Prince of Egypt), Peter McGovern (The History BoysThe Comedy About a Bank Robbery) and Roshani Abbey (Hamilton& Juliet), joined Chlöe Hart earlier this year to form the new cast, while Jason Kajdi (Matilda international tour, Mary Poppins) joined Geri AllenGeorge Jennings and Maddie Jackson-Smith to form the Company.

Since premiering at London’s 77-seat New Diorama Theatre in 2019, the show been nominated for 66 awards and won 24, including Best Musical four times at the Olivier Awards®, WhatsOnStage Awards®, BroadwayWorld Theater Fans’ Choice Awards®, and Off West End Awards®.

On Broadway, Jak Malone won the 2025 Tony Award® for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, having previously taken home the Olivier Award® for the same role in 2024. His breakout performance earned seven major accolades, including the Tony, Drama Desk®, Outer Critics Circle®, Drama League®, Theatre World®, BroadwayWorld®, and Dorian Theater Awards®. Meanwhile, SpitLip received nominations for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical from the Tony Awards®, Outer Critics Circle Awards®, Drama Desk Awards®, and BroadwayWorld Theater Fans’ Choice Awards®

Paula Wagner and Tom Werner are delighted to announce the World Premiere of the play HIGH NOON starring Emmy and Tony Award-winner Billy Crudup as Will Kane and Olivier Award-winner Denise Gough as Amy Fowler. Directed by Olivier Award-winner Thea SharrockHIGH NOON will play for a strictly limited season at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 17 December 2025 to 7 March 2026.

To sign up for priority booking go to highnoontheplay.com. Tickets go on general sale on 25 September at 10.00am.

Paula Wagner and Tom Werner are producing HIGH NOON along with Thomas Tull, Danny Cohen and Len Blvatnik.

The play HIGH NOON is by Academy Award-winner Eric Roth and marks Roth’s debut work for the stage. This gripping new adaptation is based on the iconic, four-time Academy Award-winning 1952 film with a screenplay by Carl Foreman, originally produced by Stanley Kramer and directed by Fred Zinnemann. Hailed as one of the greatest westerns ever made, this isn’t just a play, it’s a wake-up call. Told in real time, this edge-of-your-seat thriller explodes onto the stage. Once a searing allegory of Hollywood’s blacklist this unmissable new version speaks urgently to the world today.

Set in the American West of the 1800s, High Noon rides on themes as relevant now as they were then. Courage vs. Cowardice. Justice vs. Peace. Duty vs. Desire. And at its heart, is the bond between Will Kane and Amy Fowler – a love tested by impossible choices as the clock ticks down to the return of deadly outlaw Frank Miller on the high noon train. The clock is ticking. Tick: Begin a new life together? Tock: Or take a stand for the greater good? As time runs out, one truth remains: if you don’t stand up for what’s worth saving, you risk losing it all.

Producer Paula Wagner said today “There’s no one better than Eric Roth to reimagine High Noon for the stage. His debut as a playwright feels both thrilling and inevitable. With Thea Sharrock’s inspired direction and the incredible talents of Billy Crudup and Denise Gough, High Noon will bring the urgency and heart of the classic film to audiences in a way that feels both timeless and powerfully alive today.”

Producer Tom Werner said today “Every once in a while, I see a play whose themes stick with me long after I leave the theatre. Those experiences are both thrilling and astonishing. It happened recently when I saw Sarah Snook in The Picture of Dorian Gray. And it happened when I saw High Noon this summer in a workshop. Billy Crudup and Denise Gough in Eric Roth’s adaptation of High Noon is not to be missed.”

Equally memorable on the stage and screen, Billy Crudup has earned critical accolades for his performances. He currently stars as Corey Ellison in Apple TV+’s three-time Golden-Globe nominated The Morning Show alongside Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, which earned him two Emmy Awards (three nominations total), two Critics Choice Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations and two Golden Globe nominations. Upcoming, he will star in Netflix’s and Noah Baumbach’s film Jay Kelly, opposite George Clooney, Adam Sandler and Laura Dern.  On stage, Crudup most recently starred in Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Ibsen’s Ghosts. Additionally, he recently reprised his role in the one-man play Harry Clarke at the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End which earned him an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor. The West End run followed a limited engagement at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. He first performed this play at the Vineyard Theatre, for which he won an Outer Critics Circle Award, Off-Broadway Alliance Award, Lucille Lortel Award, Obie Award, Drama Desk Award and garnered a nomination for a Drama League Award. In 2007, Crudup won a “Best Performance by a Featured Actor” Tony for his role in the Broadway production of The Coast of Utopia.  He also received Tony nominations for his roles in The Elephant Man, The Pillowman and Arcadia. Crudup’s film credits include: Alien: Covenant, Jackie, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, 20th Century Women, Spotlight, Cameron Crowe’s Academy Award®-winning Almost Famous, and many more. He made his television debut in Netflix’s psychological thriller Gypsy.

Denise Gough was most recently seen in the West End reprising her Olivier Award-winning role of Emma in People, Places & Things at the Trafalgar Theatre, having previously played the role at the National Theatre, the Wyndham’s Theatre and at St Ann’s Warehouse in New York. Denise’s other theatre credits include Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches and Angels in America Part Two: Perestroika at the National Theatre and at the Neil Simon Theatre on Broadway, for which she won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. Her other West End credits include Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, As You Like It and By the Bog of Cats, and other theatre credits include Ahasverus for the RSC, Portia Coughlan at the Abbey, Dublin, The Duchess of Malfi at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Adler and Gibb at the Royal Court and Six Characters in Search of an Author at Chichester Festival Theatre. Denise’s television credits include Andor and Under the Banner of Heaven for Disney +, Paula, The Fall and Appe Tree Yard, all for the BBC, Guerilla and Stella for Sky, and Too Close for ITV, for which she was nominated for the BAFTA for Leading Actress. Denise’s film credits include Monday, The Other Lamb, Colette, The Kid Who Would Be King, Juliet Naked, Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, Jimmy’s Hall, and ’71.

Thea Sharrock’s film credits as director include Ladies First, The Beautiful Game, Wicked Little Letters, The One and Only Ivan and Me Before You. TV credits as director include the Henry V/Hollow Crown and Call the Midwife. Theatre credits as director include The Bodyguard (Adelphi Theatre, West End/US Tour), The Sunshine Boys (Savoy Theatre, West End), 13 (National Theatre), Ruby Wax Losing It (Menier Chocolate Factory), Equus (Gielgud Theatre, West End/Broadhurst Theatre, Broadway), After the Dance (National Theatre – Olivier Award for Best Revival and nomination for Best Director) and The Misanthrope (Comedy Theatre). Thea was the Artistic Director of both the Southwark Playhouse and The Gate.

During his career, he has written numerous hit films such as The Horse Whisperer (1998), Ali (2000), The Good Shepherd (2006), and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) where he gained his second Golden Globe nomination. In recent years he has also written the screenplays of two big hits: A Star is Born (2018) and Dune (2021). For television, he is remembered for being one of the co-producers of the award-winning political drama House of Cards (2013 – 2016).He has been nominated six times for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay: Forrest Gump (1994), The Insider (1999), Munich (2005), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), A Star Is Born (2018), and Dune (2021) — winning for Forrest Gump; he also earned a Best Picture nomination for producing Mank (2020). Roth also worked on the screenplays for the Oscar-nominated films Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).
