Shake It Up, Baby! Review

Epstein Theatre, Liverpool – until 12th October 2025

Reviewed by Phil Daley

5*****

“Liverpool isn’t the Reeperbahn… but Lime Street tries”

This single, sharp back-and- forth between John Lennon and George Harrison encapsulates the heart of Shake It Up, Baby! The brilliant new musical written by Ian Salmon, which captures the chaotic, gritty, and often hilarious two-year journey that forged The Beatles in Hamburg. This isn’t just a history lesson; it is a vital, often manic origin story that captures the very essence of how the “worst group in Liverpool became the greatest group the world has ever seen.”

The genius of Salmon’s script lies in its balance. It is meticulously researched, grounded in real-life lines spoken by those who were there, yet infused with even more wit, if that were possible.

The lynchpin of the production is as the Beatles’ first manager and the show’s narrator, Allan Williams. Schofield delivers a tragicomic portrayal of a well-meaning entrepreneur who is simply outpaced by the raw talent he discovers. He balances hilarity and colourful language with frustration as he tries to wrangle the young band, turning to bitterness and anger as he is sidelined. Though his fondness of the boys and acceptance of being a footnote in history wins out.

Of the boys in the band, Michael Hawkins’ John Lennon is a standout. He delivers a performance defined by John’s hyperactive stage presence, perfectly embodying his wit, sarcasm, presence, and even stance with a guitar. His raw, powerful vocal on “Money” marks a musical turning point for the band.

The versatility of the ensemble is brilliantly highlighted by two actors in particular. Kieran Andrew as Stuart Sutcliffe is effortlessly cool, spending the first half playing his bass lines sitting on his amp at the back of the stage and peering out over his ever-present sunglasses. Later as Brian Epstein, he shifts flawlessly into the role of the foppish, determined gentleman who nervously tries to rein in the band with paternal care.

Nick Sheedy as Pete Best / Ringo Starr achieves a moment of virtuoso transformation. Dumbfounded by his sacking, the cocky Pete glides from centre stage to the drum kit, and with a swift brush through of his rocker quiff into a moptop, Nick is instantly Ringo, jumping into the next song with hair flicking, head bobbing, and a cheeky grin that shows he studied his subject flawlessly.

The supporting cast provides real depth: Grace Galloway as Astrid Kirchherr adds gravity to devastation in the aftermath of tragedy, while Andro Cowperthwaite delivered the best vocal of the show as Derry Wilkie. Jess Smith as Beryl and Frankee-Mae Mciler provide excellent support. And I lost track of how many characters Connor Simpkins played, each with wonderful comedic timing and panache

Under the expert direction of Stephen Fletcher, the pacing is expertly managed,
accelerating with the band’s inevitable ascent from the shambolic Silver Beetles to the
polished and unstoppable momentum of The Beatles! The staging is simple, efficiently
accounting for the various clubs and venues, allowing the focus to remain laser-sharp
on the performances.

The actor-musicianship is a thrilling high point. The entire cast plays their instruments without a bum note, establishing the raw, live sound of the era. Special note goes to James Jackson for guitar parts probably better than George Harrison could manage at the time!

The choreography from Wow Liverpool’s dancers in the ensemble is dynamic, frenetic and quintessentially ’60s – injecting vitality into the stage. Tia Breese deserves particular recognition here.

The final scene where the newly suited Fab Four achieves its final form, the harmonies kick in, and they perfect the well-known staging we all recognise, is a powerful moment of myth-making. As Allan Williams suggests in his moving closing monologue, this is a story of dreamers who didn’t just belong to the world, but made the world belong to them.

This play is a triumph of local talent and rock-and-roll energy. Like the boys themselves,
it will certainly travel and find success well beyond Liverpool

Theatre Royal Plymouth Announces New Production of FAME

THEATRE ROYAL PLYMOUTH

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

JAMIE WILSON PRODUCTIONS
ANNOUNCE

A BOLD NEW PRODUCTION OF THE MUSICAL
FAME
OPENING AT THEATRE ROYAL PLYMOUTH
FOR A STRICTLY LIMITED RUN

FROM 28 JULY – 15 AUGUST 2026

DIRECTED AND CHOREOGRAPHED BY

TOM JACKSON GREAVES

DESIGNED BY SOUTRA GILMOUR

TICKETS ON SALE SOON

Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) in association with Jamie Wilson Productions are delighted to announce a bold new production of FAME THE MUSICAL. Playing for a strictly limited run at TRP from 28 July – 15 August 2026, FAME will be directed and choreographed by Tom Jackson Greaves (The Book Thief, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Whistle Down the Wind) working in collaboration with Designer Soutra Gilmour (Evita, Sunset Boulevard, and & Juliet). Casting and further creative team to be announced. Tickets go on sale soon.

In 1995, FAME had its European premiere at TRP, marking the start of an incredible journey from screen to stage. That unforgettable production ran for over a decade in the West End, toured extensively and inspired hundreds of thousands of theatre lovers worldwide. Now, on the 30th anniversary of that landmark production, Theatre Royal Plymouth in association with Jamie Wilson Productions are reimagining a bold new revival of the musical for the 21st century that will include songs from the iconic 1980’s movie.

James Mackenzie-Blackman, TRP Chief Executive and Artistic Director, said: “FAME signifies another key milestone for TRP in making our mark as a leading producing theatre. It’s also a pleasure to once again share the ride with Jamie Wilson Productions, who we worked with on the hugely successful The Devil Wears Prada which premiered at TRP and is now still playing to sell-out audiences in the West End.

“Our production of FAME will play homage to the iconic show’s original spirit and enduring legacy, while inviting a new generation to fall in love with it as so many of us did before.”

Producer Jamie Wilson said: “Having watched FAME countless times growing up in London and regionally, I’m thrilled to be part of this new production at the wonderful Theatre Royal Plymouth, marking 30 years since the show premiered there.

“In that time, FAME has entertained and enthralled fans around the world with its incredible music, energy and choreography. This brand-new production will excite a whole new generation of theatregoers and bring so much nostalgia to those who grew up with it.”

Director and Choreographer, and TRP Associate Artistic Director, Tom Jackson Greaves said: “I wore out my VHS copy of FAME the movie as a teenager. Its intoxicating depiction of 1980’s New York and its unique and beautiful inhabitants taught me so much about my identity, my ambition and what felt possible. Ultimately, FAME is a love-letter to the arts. It celebrates all forms, all people, all journeys and to be able to revisit this iconic and beloved story on its 30th anniversary is such a full-circle gift. I look forward to creating our rediscovered and reinvigorated production alongside one of the UK’s most brilliant theatrical talents, designer, Soutra Gilmour.”

1980, Manhattan, New York.  Amid the relentless noise and chaos of the city lies a sanctuary for young artists: The High School of Performing Arts. FAME follows a group of students from enrolment to graduation, as they come-of-age through their shared passion for music, drama and dance.  This is a raw and unapologetic journey into the heart of showbiz – where talent and ambition collide with sacrifice and the harsh reality of chasing your dreams.

FAME THE MUSICAL was originally conceived and developed by David De Silva with book by Jose Fernandez, Lyrics by Jacques Levy and Music by Steve Margoshes featuring the title song “Fame” written by Dean Pitchford and Michael Gore.

FAME THE MUSICAL is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International www.MTIShows.co.uk

Playing the title character in Lloyd Webber’s musical adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, more success followed. There were other hits before and after – including Grease, Thriller – Live, The Rocky Horror Show, Evita, Elf, and more.

In this this new intimate show, Ben will perform the songs that made him a star – as well as sharing captivating stories about his life in the limelight.

Ben said: “It’s almost 14 years since I won Superstar so now will be a great time to look back at my career since then, and share the songs from musical theatre that are so special to me.”

Inspector Morse – House of Ghosts Review

Nottingham Theatre Royal – until Saturday 4 October 2025

“A nostalgic 1980’s Morse mystery, where theatre, academia, and hidden motives collide.”

Detective Inspector Morse brings a wave of British TV nostalgia, with a brand-new mystery set in 1987 – a time when computers were just starting to enter into the workplace, much to Morse’s quiet dismay.

Director Anthony Banks reunites with Tom Chambers, having previously worked together on ‘Dial M for Murder’, so Chambers is no stranger to the genre. His performance captures some of the quirks and mannerisms of Morse well. Thoughtful, slightly brooding and with just enough edge to keep things interesting and naturally, he still loves a crossword puzzle.

Of course, every Morse requires his Lewis, and Tachia Newall is an ideal sidekick. He’s future-thinking, far less cynical and provides many of the much-needed laughs in the show. He was my favourite character – warm, grounded and a great counterbalance to Morse’s more downbeat energy.

The play is an original story, not an adaptation of a Colin Dexter novel, unlike much of the TV series. It’s a play-within-a-play, with the plot centred around a travelling theatre company performing Hamlet in Oxford and the leading lady dies in the opening scene. The cast are, predictably, a bunch of eccentrics, each hiding secrets, motives, and in some cases, desires. It’s the ideal mix of suspects for Morse and Lewis to comb through.

Oxford is a fitting backdrop for the action, given Morse’s academic history. Among the ensemble are Lawrence (Robert Mountford), the egotistical director; Ellen (Tresea Banham), a local historian and potential love interest; and Verity (Charlotte Randle), an aging actress and old peer of Morse. Their tangled relationships and history add texture, though not all are fully explored. Alongside younger members of the cast, facing their own issues from substance abuse to unrequited love.

As a newly written piece by Alma Cullen, the audience uncovers clues alongside the detectives, which adds a layer of suspense. Whilst the mystery unfolds with a steady drip of revelations, the pacing occasionally falters – especially in the second act, where unfortunately, exposition begins to outweigh intrigue.

Overall, Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts offers a welcome return to one of British television’s most enduring detectives, but the stage adaptation doesn’t always match the quiet intensity of its source material.

The mystery is interesting, the performances decent and the nostalgia well-handled. Sadly, the production struggles at times to generate the kind of dramatic urgency that Morse’s best cases demand.

Fans of the character will find enough to enjoy, especially in Tom Chambers’ thoughtful portrayal, but newcomers may find the pace and emotional stakes a little too subdued. It’s a respectful tribute, but it doesn’t quite match the national treasure that is John Thaw.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe Review

Hull New Theatre – until 4th October 2025

Chris Harper Productions and Catherine Schreiber, Michael Watt Productions, No Guarantees, Winkler and Smalberg, Jonathan Church Theatre Productions, Echo Lake Entertainment, Laurence Myers, James Seabright, Jones Theatrical Group present The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

From the moment this show started we were treated to an assault on the senses, a piano on the stage and a clock without handles as the dark backdrop. All the cast were amazing, from the musicians playing their instruments on the stage as well as acting to the other cast members who all played their parts faultlessly.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is based on the book by C S Lewis, which is celebrating its 75th year since it was first published. It is set in World War Two and its were we meet the four Pevensie children who are about to evacuated from the Blitz. The children, Susan (Joanna Adaran), Peter (Jesse Dunbar), Lucy (Kudzai Mangombe) and Edmund (Bunmi Osadolor) are sent by train to Inverness in Scotland to stay at the Professors (Kraig Thornber) home. Whilst staying there the children discover the mystical world of Narnia, firstly Lucy who meets Mr Tumnus (Alfie Richards), then Edmund who meets the White Witch (Katy Stephens) and then all the children together. What follows is the journey all of the characters take, the children learning how to brave and how to fight to save themselves and the friends they have made.

The set and costumes (design by Tom Paris) were fabulous, from the dark forest, the creatures who lived there to the White Witch, the attention to detail was outstanding. Under director Michael Fentiman the story from the pages of C S Lewis came alive on stage.

The Lion, Aslan, was so good, from the puppeteers (Andrew Davison, Molly Francis, Rhodri Watkins) to the voice of Aslan (Stanton Wright) they really brought Aslan to life and The White Witch (Katy Stephens) was very menacing and their scenes were some of the best in the production.

This was a stunning production; it was quite dark in some places with humour and brilliant acting setting the tone for quite a heartwarming tale of families, communities coming together and friendship. Definitely one not to miss.
