New dates including Southbank Centre added to UK Tour of The Boy at the Back of the Class

NEW DATES ADDED TO THE 2026 UK TOUR OF

THE BOY AT THE BACK OF THE CLASS

INCLUDING SOUTHAMPTON, EDINBURGH, BRISTOL &

THE SOUTHBANK CENTRE’S QUEEN ELIZABETH HALL

Children’s Theatre Partnership and Rose Theatre are delighted to announce new dates as part of the 2026 UK Tour of The Boy at the Back of the Class.  The tour will now also play at Southampton’s Mayflower Studios, Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre, Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park Theatre, Bristol Old Vic and the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.  Nick Ahad’s critically and publicly acclaimed adaptation of Onjali Q. Raúf’s award-winning and best-selling novel is a celebration of friendship, kindness and compassion and will once again be directed by The Stage Debut Award-winner, Monique Touko.  Following a two-week run at Rose Theatre, from 6-22 February 2026, the tour will run through to 23 May 2026.

There used to be an empty chair at the back of the class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it. He’s nine years old (just like me), but he’s very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn’t like sweets – not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite!

After learning that he has fled his own war-torn country, Ahmet’s classmates have ‘The Greatest Idea in the World’ – a magnificent plan to reunite Ahmet with his family. An unexpected and often hilarious adventure follows, all topped off with a terrific twist.

Told from a child’s perspective, balancing heart and humour, The Boy at the Back of the Class highlights the power of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn’t always make sense and reminds us that everyone needs a place to call home.

The cast is to be announced.

The creative team includes Monique Touko (Director), Amy Crighton (Co-Revival Director), Lily Arnold (Set & Costume Designer), Ryan Day (Lighting Designer), Giles Thomas (Composer & Sound Designer), Kloé Dean (Movement Director) and Sophie Parrott CDG (Casting Director).

DANIEL BROCKLEBANK to star in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN THE MUSICAL Liverpool Playhouse Transfer

DANIEL BROCKLEBANK

TO STAR IN

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN THE MUSICAL

LIVERPOOL PLAYHOUSE TRANSFER

FOR LIMITED 5 WEEK RUN

3 DECEMBER 2025 – 3 JANUARY 2026

Hope Mill Theatre are delighted to announce that Coronation Street’s Daniel Brocklebank will be taking over the role of Dr Frederick Frankenstein in their production of Mel Brooks’ YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN THE MUSICAL when it transfers to Liverpool Playhouse for a limited 5-week run over the Christmas season. Performances start on 3 December 2025 running through to 3 January 2026.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is currently having its regional premiere at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester starring Ore Oduba in the lead role. The show continues its run there until 30 November 2025.

Also joining the cast with Daniel will be Amelia Adams (Grace Farrell in Annie, UK Tour; Mary Delgado in Jersey Boys, UK Tour & West End) as Elizabeth Benning alongside current cast members Jessica Martin as Frau Blücher, Pete Gallagher as The Monster, Curtis Patrick as Igor, Simeon Truby as Inspector Hans Kemp/Harold the Hermit and Julie Yammanee as Inga. The cast is completed by Belle Kizzy Green, Robin Kent, Bryan Mottram, Alanna Panditaratne, Nathan Ryles, Hakeem Tinubu, Patricia Wilkins and Jessica Wright.

Daniel Brocklebank is an award-winning actor best known for his portrayal of Billy Mayhew in Coronation Street. In 1999 Daniel won a Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in the multi award-winning Shakespeare In Love (Miramax) and in 2010 he won a Best Actor Award at LesGaiCineMad International Film Festival for his role in British indie film Release (FAQs Ltd).

On screen, Daniel has played much loved character Billy Mayhew in Coronation Street since 2014. He played Ivan Jones in ITV’s Emmerdale between 2005 – 2006, and Carl Saunders in seasons 2-3 of BBC’s WPC 56. Other credits include Finding Joy (Acorn TV); Midsomer Murders, Chasing Shadows, The Bill, Emmerdale, Oliver Twist (ITV); Born and Bred, Down To Earth, Doctors, Ed Stone Is Dead, Captain Lamar and Casualty (BBC); Fair City (RTE). He was also crowned winner of ITV’s All Star Musicals in 2019.

On film, Daniel’s work includes The Hole starring opposite Keira Knightley and Thora Birch; The Hours opposite Meryl Streep; Another Life, Merlin, The Devil’s Arithmetic and The Criminal with Eddie Izzard. Further credits include Admiral; Soft Lad; Native; The Vintage; Cal; Age of Heroes, and Little Deaths/Mutant Tool. Daniel’s theatre credits include numerous productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company including Silvius in As You Like It; Chiron in Titus Andronicus; and Ralph in Lord of the Flies. Further theatre includes The Hallowe’en Sessions (Leicester Square Theatre); The Importance of Being Earnest (Rose Theatre Kingston); A Dolls House (The Lowry); His Dark Materials (Birmingham Rep / West Yorkshire Playhouse); John Rutherford in Rutherford and Son (Manchester Royal Exchange); John Honyman in Cressida (Almeida Theatre).

Adapted by Mel Brooks from his legendary 1974 film starring Gene Wilder, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN tells the story of the grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) who inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN marks the 10th Anniversary year of Hope Mill Theatre, which opened its doors in October 2015. Founded by Joseph Houston and William Whelton the Award-Winning venue has gained a reputation Nationally and Internationally for its in-house musical productions.

Every bit as relevant to audience members who will remember the original as it will be to newcomers, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN has all the panache of the screen sensation with a little extra theatrical flair added. It will surely be the perfect opportunity for a production company to showcase an array of talents. With such memorable tunes as The Transylvania Mania, He Vas My Boyfriend and Puttin’ on the Ritz by Irving Berlin, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is scientifically proven, monstrously good entertainment.

Mel Brooks’ YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN has a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, with music and lyrics by Mel Brooks, orchestrations by Doug Besterman & Mark Cumberland and original direction and choreography by Susan Stroman. This production will have direction and choreography by Nick Winston, musical direction and co-musical supervision by Francesca Warren, set design by Sophia Pardon, orchestration and co-musical supervision by Charlie Ingles, sound design by Ben Harrison, lighting design by Aaron J Dootson, video and projection design by Matt Powell, costume design by Lorraine Parry, wigs and make-up design by Jackie Sweeney, prosthetics design by Noah Ehrhardt, associate choreography by Lauren Kate Hampton and casting by Jim Arnold CDG.

Little Shop the Musical

Following its major revival at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre next autumn, the cult musical comedy LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS will transfer to the Liverpool Playhouse for a special Christmas season from 3 December 2026 to 9 January 2027 with a Press Night on Friday 4 December 2026. Tickets are on sale now via Little Shop the Musical.

This run in Manchester – from Friday 25 September to Sunday 29 November 2026 – plus Liverpool will be the longest sit-down production to play in the UK since the 2007 West End production

Directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award-nominated Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, this brand-new production will bring Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s beloved musical to life, with its killer tunes, outrageous comedy, and one very hungry plant!

Joining Carrie-Anne on the creative team is the award-winning set and costume designer Morgan Large (Sister Act, This Bitter Earth, Newsies); musical supervisor and arranger Paul Schofield (Hair, BatBoy ) lighting designer Rory Beaton (Burlesque The Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, For Black Boys…), sound designer Kelsh Buckman-Drage (associate on EvitaHamiltonMamma Mia!), and casting director Rob Kelly (HadestownThis Bitter EarthGeek Girl). Further creative team and casting will be announced next year.

Nathan Powell, Creative Director of Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse said “We’re really looking forward to welcoming this cult classic musical to the Playhouse next Christmas. Little Shop of Horrors is wonderfully odd, full of cracking tunes, and offers a brilliantly different take on festive entertainment. After bringing The Rocky Horror Show to the Playhouse in 2024 and preparing to present Young Frankenstein this Christmas, Little Shop of Horrors will be another chance to enjoy a gloriously offbeat holiday season with plenty of laughs and, yes, a rather hungry plant.”

Thomas Hopkins said, “I am truly honored to be entrusted with the opportunity to produce the first major sit-down production, not in one city but two, of Little Shop of Horrors since its celebrated West End run in 2007. With Carrie-Anne and such an exceptional creative team, it’s a dream collaboration. When the team at the Liverpool Playhouse invited us to follow our already announced ten-week run at Hope Mill, we couldn’t be more grateful. This production promises to be one of the most exciting and faithful interpretations of Little Shop of Horrors the UK has seen in many, many years.”

Little Shop of Horrors has music by Alan Menken, book and lyrics by Howard Ashman.

The Lightning Thief – The Percy Jackson Musical Review

New Wimbledon Theatre – until Saturday 1st November 2025

5*****

Wimbledon brings you the well known story from the book series of Percy Jackson written by Rick Riordan, made into a tv series and now a broadway show directed by Lizzi Gee.

It tells the story of a young teenage boy Percy Jackson (Vasco Emauz) who throughout his life has found it difficult to fit in, so far being expelled from a number of schools and generally just struggling to find his way in life. Things begin to take a massive turn, when he is sent of to a half-blood camp only to discover that he is infact a demigod and that his father is actually Poseidon! This is all discovered whilst being on a school trip which goes from good to bad within no time at all. Leading him to fighting against monsters such as mythical creatures blowing his mind and questioning his whole life!

Percy Jackson is then accused of stealing Zeus’s lightning bolt, which then sends him on a quest across the United States with two of his friends Annabeth (Kayna Montecillo) a demigod of Athena, and Grover (Cahir O’Neill) a Satyr, to prevent a war happening amongst the Gods.

Along their journey they face a series of trials that involve encounters with mythical creatures and challenges that they must navigate as a team and overcome, showing personal growth and a bond that will become unforgettable!

This was an exceptional show to watch. There was a strong connection between all actors on stage, that was definitely clear to see! The choreography also done by Lizzi Gee was outstanding and it was amazing to see so much talent on one stage. I also feel that the vocals need a mention as all actors just smashed it alongside some great songs. The whole performance I thought was just exceptional. The props were simple but very effective alongside the lighting just gave it that wow factor!

I took my 13 years old daughter to see this and she had a blast smiling from start to finish. I would definitely recommend this show for a family day out, it definitely didn’t disappoint!

Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts Review

Sheffield Lyceum – until Saturday 1st November 2025

Reviewed by Claire Moore

3***

Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts brings Oxford’s most famous detective to the stage for the first time. Written by Alma Cullen, who penned several episodes of the much-loved TV series back in the ’80s and ’90s, it’s set in 1987 and combines classic murder mystery with a touch of the personal. When Morse and Lewis are called to investigate the mysterious death of a young actress during a performance of Hamlet, the case begins to stir up ghosts from Morse’s own past — blurring the lines between professional duty and personal pain.

Fans of the TV series will find plenty of familiar nods — from Morse’s fondness for real ale to his sharp eye for the tiny details everyone else overlooks. But rather than the elusive, emotionally guarded Morse we know from television, this story digs a little deeper. As the investigation unfolds, we see glimpses of Morse’s own past and the memories that still haunt him, as the sinister events on stage begin to connect to something that happened twenty-five years earlier.

Tom Chambers delivers a strong performance, putting his own stamp on Morse while still giving the occasional echo of John Thaw’s beloved portrayal. His Morse has the same quiet intelligence and dry wit, but it’s refreshing to see a more personal, reflective side. His partnership with Lewis (Tachia Newall) works well — there’s an easy warmth and respect between them that makes their relationship believable and engaging to watch.

Robert Mountford works well as the arrogant and slightly sleazy director Lawrence — he could have stepped straight out of a 1980s episode. He’s the perfect opposition for Morse, who we know can’t help but loathe that kind of man. Eliza Teale gives a layered performance as Rebecca, the cast member who’s fallen off the wagon, while Teresa Banham brings a steady, grounded presence as Ellen, giving the story a touch more emotional weight. Unfortunately, what’s missing is that real sense of suspense — the tension never quite builds in the way you hope it will.

The scene changes are smooth as the cast move the furniture on and off with slick precision, keeping the action flowing without any awkward pauses. I did find myself missing those familiar shots of beautiful Oxford though; with everything set in the theatre, pub or police station, it all felt a little dark and enclosed at times.

Overall, it won’t keep you on the edge of your seat, but fans of the TV show will enjoy a nostalgic trip into familiar territory. And there are just enough twists and turns to keep everyone else entertained.

Mamma Mia! Review

Mayflower Theatre, Southampton  – until 8 November 2025

Reviewed by Jo Gordon

If happiness could be bottled, it would probably sound a lot like Mamma Mia!  From the first glimmer of sunshine on that Greek island to the final, glorious explosion of sequins and lycra this production is a glitter cannon of joy that fires straight at your heart  and quite possibly your dancing feet.

The fact it has been running, globally for over 26 years makes it clear this isn’t just another jukebox musical. The story, centred on Sophie’s quest to discover which of the three charmingly confused men is her father before her wedding, is both chaotic and heartwarming. What could go wrong when you invite three of your Mum’s old flames to an island wedding without telling her? (Answer: everything, but in the most delightful way imaginable!)

Sophie ( Lydia Hunt) played with infectious enthusiasm and a voice that could probably power a small village, is a total delight. Her chemistry with Sky (Joe Grundy) is genuine, her excitement palpable, and her rendition of “I Have a Dream” sweet enough to melt the toughest cynic. However, the show truly belongs to Donna (Jenn Griffin). When she belts out “The Winner Takes It All” it’s as if every heartbreak you’ve ever had suddenly decided to join in and I don’t believe anyone who says they do not have a tear in their eye at “Slipping Through my Fingers“ The emotion is raw and  the vocals spine-tingling.

Donna’s partners-in-chaos (we all have our version!) Tanya (Sarah Earnshaw) and Rosie (Rosie Glossop) provide a masterclass in comedic brilliance. Tanya, glamorous and gloriously sassy, nails her timing with the precision of a Swiss watch, especially during “Does Your Mother Know”, where she effortlessly turns the tables on a much younger admirer. Rosie, meanwhile, is the friend we all need, bold, hilarious, and utterly unfiltered. Her flirtation with Bill had the audience roaring with laughter, and when she launches into “Take a Chance on Me”, resistance is futile.

The three Dads, Sam (Luke Jasztal), Harry (Richard Meek) and Bill (Mark Goldthorp) each bring their own charm to the mix. Sam’s emotional honesty grounds the chaos, Harry’s awkward earnestness is endearing, and Bill’s carefree humour adds warmth and mischief in equal measure. Together, they’re a wonderfully mismatched trio who make you root for all of them.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Mamma Mia! without the music. Every ABBA hit lands perfectly, from the cheeky fun of “Lay All Your Love on Me” to the euphoric energy of “Voulez-Vous.” The choreography bursts with life, the costumes shimmer like a disco ball’s daydream, and the ensemble cast radiates such joy that it’s impossible not to join in.

By the time the encore hits complete with those legendary jumpsuits, the audience is on its feet, clapping, cheering and dancing. It’s silly, it’s heartfelt, it’s gloriously over the top and that’s exactly the point.

Mamma Mia! isn’t just a musical; it’s a holiday for the soul. You’ll leave humming ABBA, grinning from ear to ear and wondering how soon you can see it again.

A Murder Has Been Arranged Review

The Little Theatre Leicester – until 1st November 2025

Emlyn Williams’ play A Murder Has Been Arranged hinges on a rather convoluted and farfetched premise. Which unfortunately doesn’t wear well. The plot concerns an unusual party that takes place on the stage of an empty theatre, rented for the occasion of Lord Jasper’s 50th birthday. Lord Jasper is something of an expert in all things occult and the theatre is reputed to have its own ghostly apparitions, hence his choice of location. Legend has it that a murder once committed at the St. James Theatre, that a mute woman will appear on stage and reveal the murderer. In addition to this, according to the terms of a will, if Jasper can survive until 11 pm, he stands to inherit 2 million pounds. Also in the running for the money is Jasper’s only surviving relative, Maurice Mullins, who will inherit the money if Jasper doesn’t make it to midnight. Of course, the mysterious relative shows up.

Sadly, this rendition of the play offers nothing new or inventive. There is no mystery as we know who the murderer is, the spookiness falls flat and the flaws in the plot make for a wholly unsatisfactory piece of theatre. It’s all a bit ponderous, convoluted and unconvincing. There is no real fear or suspense and not for the first time this season, I was left questioning the choice of play.

Andrew Webster’s portrayal of Lord Jasper misses the mark; his character lacks the eccentricity and edge needed to sell the occultist angle. Daniel Creedon’s Jimmy North, while technically proficient, veers into exaggerated territory, undermining the believability of his relationships on stage. Charlotte Brown brings charm to the role of Jasper’s young bride, though her scenes with North suffer from a lack of chemistry. Nadine Hossent, as the bride’s mother, injects energy with a performance that balances haughty elegance and maternal desperation. Angela Hill shines as Mrs Wragg, delivering a fiery and entertaining performance, while Joy Brankin-Frisby adds tension as the jittery Miss Groze—though her nervousness stems from reasons unrelated to the ghostly lore. Paul Large’s Maurice Mullins is flamboyant and commanding, but the character could benefit from more nuance. Dorota Wojtkowska’s portrayal of ‘The Woman’ lacks the eerie impact the role demands, coming across more as repetitive hysteria than chilling mystery.

I’m not sure if this is all performance based or if this was the intention of director John Ghent, whose nostalgic passion for the play is evident, but the staging feels static and outdated. The cast are often prone on stage, waiting for cues or their turn to speak, much like sim characters awaiting activation. The dialogue-heavy script demands dynamism to elevate the piece, but alas, there is none. The set is rather full; furniture fills it and there is a dining table that is repeatedly dressed by various characters. This play is long and drawn out, the humour does not land and the performances do not hold up. It takes an extraordinary amount of time to set the scenes, then it drifts in the doldrums for a while waiting for the clock to tick towards 11 o’clock when the unexplained and unnatural take over.

While there are occasional clever effects and moments, such as the manipulation of a character into writing a suicide note, the overall tension and fear factor fall short. With a fresher, more vigorous interpretation, this vintage piece might have found new life. As it stands, A Murder Has Been Arranged feels like a missed opportunity.
