Direct from London’s West End!

Olivier-nominated Best New Play
‘CRUISE’

written and performed by Jack Holden
directed by Bronagh Lagan

will get its regional premiere at HOME, Manchester

20 July – 12 August, 2023

Set in 1980’S Soho, ‘CRUISE’ was the first new play to premiere in the West End when theatres re-opened after the Covid pandemic in May 2021.

Now writer and performer Jack Holden (‘Ten Per Cent’, Amazon Prime Video; ‘War Horse’, National Theatre), and his co-star John Patrick Elliott (The Litle Unsaid), who mixes and performs live an original electronic soundtrack during the show, will bring their stunning West End production to HOME, Manchester from 20 July – 12 August, 2023.

Winning critical acclaim and a coveted Olivier Award nomination for Best New Play, a feature film of ‘CRUISE’ is also currently in development.

Inspired by a true story Jack was told while volunteering for Switchboard, the LGBTQ+ listening and advice phone line, ‘CRUISE’ brings vividly to life 1980’s Soho in a kaleidoscopic musical celebration of queer culture with an uplifting soundtrack.

Jack Holden and John Patrick Elliott said today: “We’re so excited to bring ‘CRUISE’ to HOME Manchester for a limited run this Summer! In 2021, we reopened the West End with a bang, returning for another sell-out run in Summer 2022. Audiences were in desperate need of a release – a reason to come together, to laugh, to cry and to have a little dance – and ‘CRUISE’ gave them just that. HOME is the perfect next stop for our loud, proud, hilarious and heartbreaking show. We can’t wait to get back on stage, make one hell of a noise, and take Manchester back to the 1980s!”

February 29, 1988. Soho, London. ‘CRUISE’ is the true story of what should have been Michael Spencer’s last night on Earth. When Michael is diagnosed with HIV in 1984, he’s told he’ll have four years to live – at most. So, with the clock ticking, he and his partner, Dave, decide to sell their house, flog the car, spend everything they have and party like it’s the last days of Rome. When Dave dies two years later, Michael doubles down on his hedonistic ways, spending what little he has left and drowning himself in drink and drugs.

On the last night of his four-year countdown – the 29 February, 1988 – Michael decides to go out with a bang. He puts on his favourite jacket, heads for Soho, and embarks on a long night of farewells. He says his goodbyes to friends, enemies and strangers; old haunts, dive bars, cafes, clubs and pubs; his brothers, sisters, allies and exes. He dances, sings, and says yes to everything and everyone. Then, with all his affairs taken care of, Michael promptly… survives. Michael got lucky, and he goes on to live to a ripe old age. Michael has been given the gift of life; but what kind of life can he now live?

Cymbeline Review

Royal Shakespeare Theatre Stratford-Upon-Avon – until 27th May 2023

Reviewed by Amarjeet Singh

4****

An empty stage, bar a huge, full moon. Cymbeline is King of Britain, married to a Queen. They each have a child from previous relationships, The King, a daughter, the wilful and feisty Imogen, The Queen, a son, the boorish, entitled Cloten. Cymbeline adopted an orphan boy, Posthumus Leonatus and brought him up as his own. Imogen and Posthumus Leonatus, become lovers, the King objects as Posthumus Leonatus has no royal lineage and is therefore proclaimed an unworthy match for Imogen. The Queen believes her son, Cloten, should marry Imogen and he would thus secure the crown. She is also ensuring this by commissioning the doctor, Cornelius to supply poison to enable her in her dastardly deeds. Cornelius, suspicious, swaps the poison for a sleeping potion.

Cymbeline, had two sons, Imogen’s brothers, Guiderius and Arviragus, who were taken as babies, by the banished Lord Belarius, as an act of revenge against Cymbeline for the banishment. Cymbeline, a fan of banishing, banishes Posthumus Leonatus to Italy, where he encounters Iachimo, a Roman lord, who, tired of hearing Posthumus Leonatus brag about his lady and her virtues, wagers that he could seduce her with ease. Affronted, Posthumus Leonatus accepts, confident that Imogen would stay true and thus off trots Iachimo to try his best with Imogen, vowing to bring back indisputable evidence of his conquest. His wit and charm not influencing Imogen’s chastity, Iachimo enters Imogen’s bedchamber via a chest and records details about the room and, non-consensually, her body, as well as stealing the bracelet Posthumus Leonatus gave her. Upon receiving these, Posthumus Leonatus orders Pisanio, his loyal servant to kill Imogen. Knowing Imogen to be innocent, Pisanio helps Imogen to disguise herself as a man and flee.

I could continue, there is a lot of story to Cymbeline so it’s difficult to explain it in a nutshell. A headless corpse, a roman battle, and even the god Jupiter descending from the heavens. Cymbeline is one of Shakespeare’s last plays and is akin to a greatest hits album. It’s more plot than play, there is not enough time for all these storylines to be fully realised so you end up with a confusing mash-up of several of Shakespeare’s other plays. Cymbeline’s relationship with his daughter Imogen suggests Lear and Cordelia in King Lear, while Iachimo gives glimmers of Iago in Othello, the sleeping potion taken mistakenly is reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet and Imogen’s cross-dressing recalls Shakespeare’s comedies.

Therefore, Gregory Doran’s production is triumphant in its general coherence. Clearly sectioned into 3 acts it allows the 3 and a half hour play to be told simply and traditionally. A fitting swan song for Doran, its uncluttered with no elaborate sets, sounds, or staging. There are key dramatic moments, a rain-washed battlefield, Gods descending from the heavens, puppets and dream sequences. The paring back of the main set make the staging of these moments really pack a punch. The lighting is effective especially when paired with the full moon.

However, there are elements which missed the mark for me. The performances are excellent throughout, some are outstanding others left me puzzled. Without deviating from the text, these characters could have been given more depth. Alexandra Gilbreath’s Queen was superb but then quickly descended into a pantomime villain, losing an element of true threat. Conor Glean’s Cloten is played with the petulance of a three-year-old. It’s relentless, we never get a sense of the aggressive threat he levies at Imogen. When he describes the act of sexual assault/rape on Imogen, the audience was laughing as there was no sign of his tyranny in this production. Jamie Wilkes puts in a tremendous performance as Iachimo, but so likeable and charming is he, that the audience was laughing when he, without consent, explores Imogen’s body. Strange choices to not pause or find some artistic tell to let the audience know of their sinister machinations. The most troubling though was Amber James’ performance as Imogen, Cymbeline’s daughter. Word perfect, crying on point, but there was no change in energy. Tightly wound, aggressive and always ready for a fight, there was no softness or femininity, no ebb and flow. Therefore, when she disguises herself as a man there is no remarkable change, and this has an impact on the story. For all these characters, beyond the mess of the plot, there is no light and dark to their performances, so it made them difficult to believe.

This aside, this production of Cymbeline is a riotous romp. The last scene may feel interminable, but maybe this was Shakespeare’s intention. At a time when plays were being threatened by other forms of entertainment, up and coming playwrights were hot on his heels, Shakespeare was trying to give you more bang for your buck. It is unquestionably all entirely worth it by the end.

As the piece now enters the New Adventures repertoire, I’m excited to say that several of the young performers who were given their first performance experience in this production are now returning to the show as seasoned professionals. I’m also delighted to see many of the phenomenal original cast return, along with some beloved New Adventures legends making their debuts in the production. Our “Romeo and Juliet” was inspired by a desire to listen to and represent young people starting out in their careers as artists, so I’m also thrilled to welcome several very talented recent graduates, making their professional debuts with us, to continue that tradition.”

Matthew Bourne’s “ROMEO AND JULIET” gives Shakespeare’s timeless story of forbidden love a scintillating injection of raw passion and youthful vitality. Confined against their will by a society that seeks to divide, our two young lovers must follow their hearts as they risk everything to be together. A masterful re-telling of an ageless tale of teenage discovery and the madness of first love, “ROMEO AND JULIET” garnered universal critical acclaim when it premiered in 2019, and now joins the New Adventures repertoire alongside the very best of Bourne’s world renowned dance theatre productions.

In 1920s Hollywood the business of making dreams come true is in full swing.

Silent movie icon George Valentin has long been the darling of the silver screen when he falls for aspiring actress Peppy Miller.

But while her star is about to rise, his might soon flicker out: amidst all the glamour, laughter and romance, the silent movie industry is on the brink of a revolution.

With the Talkies on their way, George must either find his voice in a brave new world or lose everything he holds dear to a bygone era.

The Artist has mesmerised film audiences across the world for over a decade, winning five Academy Awards, seven BAFTAs and three Golden Globe Awards. Now the beguiling love story is reinvented for the stage in a dazzling celebration of silent cinema that blends cutting-edge theatre-making with iconic music of the period.

Drew McOnie, Artistic Director of The McOnie Company, said:

“Creating the world premiere stage adaptation of The Artist marks not only the start of a new era in my life as a theatre maker but also an arrival moment for The McOnie Company. I have held its development close to my heart for many years having been mesmerised by the original film.

To be joined by such an extraordinary creative team is thrilling and I am so grateful to the team at Theatre Royal Plymouth for supporting our vision of this story and giving us a creative home to launch this special project. Having the support of Michel Hazanavicius, the mastermind behind the original film, is incredibly important to all of us and it’s an honour to bring this beloved story to the stage.

The Artist shows us that even within this noisy world we can find our voice if we listen with our hearts.”

NHS 75th Anniversary Gala searching for
NHS Stars to celebrate

The search has been launched for NHS Stars to be celebrated at the 2023 NHS Gala, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the NHS this autumn, presented by Adam Blanshay Productions in partnership with NHS Charities Together. Members of the public can nominate themselves or any inspiring NHS workers, volunteers or patients they know to be an NHS Star through an online form or video submission

Adam Blanshay Productions and NHS Charities Together will select several NHS Stars from the nominees later in the year. The NHS Stars will be the inspiration for new songs written about them and their heroic work in the NHS for a new song cycle, Newfound Hope Songs, which has been commissioned specially and will be performed at an epic West End concert gala in the autumn.

Do you know a superstar doctor or nurse, courageous patient, outstanding ambulance worker, health support worker or psychologist? Maybe you’re an exceptional occupational therapist, know a brilliant pharmacist or have a friend who is an amazing paediatrician? Head to the easyto-use online form to submit a nomination and help us find our NHS Stars.

Ellie Orton OBE, Chief Executive at NHS Charities Together comments, We are so looking forward to this event, which will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the incredible people of the NHS in its 75th anniversary year. The NHS is one of the biggest employers in Europe and everyone has a story to tell about their fantastic friend, neighbour or family member who goes above and beyond to help care for our nation’s health. These people all deserve recognition, and we’re excited to tell their stories in a way that’s never been done before.

Brokeback Mountain Review

@sohoplace – until 12 August 2023

Ashley Robinson’s adaptation of Annie Proulx’s short story is a poetic and emotional wonder.

Inside the intimate @sohoplace, the cinematic glory of Ang Lee’s sweeping vistas is impossible, but Dan Gillespie Sells’ evocative and transportive music fashions a clear picture of the physical isolation of the mountain as well as the emotional isolation of the characters.

The tragic love story begins at a laconic pace, with Ennis (Lucas Hedges) monosyllabic and guarded as Jack Twist (Mike Faist) tries to chat around the campfire high up on the mountain. The live band (musical director Sean Green, BJ Cole, Greg Miller, Meelie Traill) are simply wonderful, with Sophie Reid’s backing vocals complementing Eddi Reader’s magnificent and spellbinding voice. The musical themes as glances and touches are exchanged is gorgeous, building to an ominous beat before the couple’s first sexual encounter takes place in silhouette inside their tent. The following morning’s denials – “just a one-shot thing”- are soon forgotten as horse play gives way to passion and their bond becomes stronger. Ennis’s insistence on conforming to expectations and fear of the brutality he has seen against gay men sends them their separate ways to wives and children, but their love leads to 20 years of fishing and hunting trips until a tragic accident leaves Ennis alone and broken.

Lucas Hedges is brooding and brutal as Ennis, tense and prowling, only relaxed and happy when he is with Jack. Mike Faist makes Jack irresistible – charming and boyishly reckless, but with an underlying wistful longing for a life together. Their stunning chemistry is magnetic – you can’t take your eyes off them when they are chatting tenderly in each other’s arms.

Director Jonathan Butterell doesn’t rush through the story, with the songs accompanying some almost non-verbal scenes portraying the agony of Ennis and Alma’s life as efficiently as a more verbose script. The damage Ennis’s refusal to live his true life with Jack causes both men runs through every one of their encounters but the devastation Ennis brings into Alma’s life is portrayed with rapier sharp clarity by Emily Fairn in an exquisite performance that will break your heart. Paul Hickey plays older Ennis, reliving the memory of his one great love and haunting the stage, staring lovingly at jack and guilt ridden as he remembers how he treated his wife Alma (Emily Fairn). There are a few scenes where his presence seems unnecessary, but the play’s beautiful final images justify his inclusion.

Tender and tragic, this play with music will touch your heart and tear it up.

ORANGE TREE THEATRE ANNOUNCES FULL CAST FOR WORLD PREMIERE OF ISLEY LYNN’S THE SWELL

ORANGE TREE THEATRE ANNOUNCES FULL CAST FOR

WORLD PREMIERE OF ISLEY LYNN’S THE SWELL

Orange Tree Theatre (OT) today announces the full cast for the world premiere of Isley Lynn’s The SwellHannah Hauer-King directs Jessica ClarkRuby Crepin-GlyneViss Elliot SafaviSaroja-Lily RatnavelShuna Snow, and Sophie Ward. This OT co-production with Damsel Productions and The Women’s Prize for Playwriting is a thrilling romantic drama, featuring a live vocal score, spanning decades of love, sacrifice, and betrayal, opening on 29 June, with previews from the 24 June and runs until 29 July.

Artistic Director Tom Littler said today: “The Swell is funny, romantic, and tender, with a perfectly engineered plot: I couldn’t put it down. Isley Lynn has been building a reputation as one of the most exciting playwrights around: The Swell is set to be her best yet. I’m delighted that we’ve assembled this wonderful ensemble cast.”

Director of The Swell, Hannah Hauer-King, and co-founder of Damsel Productions said today: “When Isley and I developed this play with Hightide back in 2017, we couldn’t have hoped for a better home than the Orange Tree. The in-the-round intimacy of the space is perfect for a play that manages to be both laugh-out-loud funny, and filled with tragedy and loss. And though it is a play that puts six queer female characters centre stage, it really is a play for everyone. The questions it asks about relationships, fidelity and trust, will resonate for anyone who has been in love.”

Ellie Keele, co-founder of Women’s Prize for Playwriting said today: “The Swell was one of only 40 plays shortlisted for the 2020 Women’s Prize for Playwriting, out of a total 1162 entries. It was a sure-fire entry on the shortlist on the basis of its lyrical tenderness perfectly counterpointing its epic sweep. We don’t read many plays that can execute that combination so exquisitely. Added to that, Isley’s dialogue is perfectly pitched and compelling and her characters are some of the most interesting and plausible that I’ve ever come across in a play. I have no doubt that audiences will delight in this play just as much as our reading panel did. Isley Lynn is one of our finest writers for the stage and we (the Women’s Prize for Playwriting) are thrilled to be co-producing The Swell.”

ABOUT THE ORANGE TREE THEATRE

The Orange Tree (OT) is an award-winning, independent theatre. Recognised as a powerhouse that creates high-quality productions of new and rediscovered plays, it entertains 70,000 people across the UK every year.

The OT’s home in Richmond, South West London, is an intimate theatre with the audience seated all around the stage: watching a performance here is truly a unique experience. We believe in the power of dramatic stories to entertain, thrill and challenge us; plays that enrich our lives by enhancing our understanding of ourselves and each other.

As a registered charity (266128) sitting at the heart of its community, we work with 10,000 people in Richmond and beyond through participatory theatre projects for people of all ages and abilities. The Orange Tree Theatre’s mission is to enable audiences to experience the next generation of theatre talent, experiment with ground-breaking new drama and explore the plays from the past that inspire the theatre-makers of the present.

DAMSEL PRODUCTIONS
Hannah Hauer-King and Kitty Wordsworth co-founded theatre company Damsel Productions in 2015 to produce hit show Dry Land at Jermyn Street Theatre. Since then, Damsel has continued to produce work with the core aim of developing and platforming scripts written by women, and produced with primarily women-led creative teams. Damsel has produced several full-scale productions at theatres including Soho Theatre, Theatre 503, the Bunker Theatre and Jermyn Street Theatre. They have also produced sell-out live comedy and cabaret nights such as “Damsel In The Bush”; and festivals including Damsel Develops; London’s first all-women directing festival; and Damsel Outdoors, a festival of commissioned new plays written for the outdoors during the pandemic. This is their first production at the Orange Tree Theatre.

ABOUT THE WOMEN’S PRIZE FOR PLAYWRITING

Founded in 2019 by Ellie Keel and Paines Plough, The Women’s Prize for Playwriting has a simple mission statement: to secure equality in the number of male and female writers whose plays are produced on national stages in the UK and Ireland. In 2018, only 26% of new plays on main stages in Britain were by women.

The Prize’s core activity is:

·        Running an open call-out for plays by women.

·        Selecting the winning script(s) with the help of an experienced reading team and a prestigious judging panel of industry leaders.

·        Producing the winning plays on national stages.

·        Leading development work on the winning plays and some of the scripts on the shortlist.

In 2020, the Prize’s inaugural year, two First Prizes of £12,000 were awarded: to Amy Trigg for Reasons You Shouldn’t Love Me, which enjoyed a sell-out, critically acclaimed run at Kiln Theatre, directed by Charlotte Bennett and starring Amy Trigg, and to Ahlam for You Bury Me, which had its staged reading at the Lyceum Theatre, directed by Katie Posner, with a main stage tour in 2023. For the Prize’s second year in 2021, the First Prize was awarded to Karis Kelly for their play Consumed, which is now currently in development.
