What the Butler Saw Review

Festival Theatre, Malvern – until 13 July 2024

Joe Orton gives us a farcical evening to savour at Malvern Theatres with What The Butler Saw (from 1967).

The staggeringly inappropriate Doctor Prentice (John Dorney) encourages his proposed secretary Geraldine Barclay (Alana Jackson) during her job interview to strip off so that he can assess her suitability for the job. With the sudden appearance of his wife (the aptly named Mrs Prentice; Holly Smith) events rapidly unravel as the more he attempts to cover up the situation the more he’s tripped up by his own metaphorical dropped trousers. It transpires that Mrs Prentice has spent a far from innocent previous evening with a hotel employee, Nicholas Beckett (Alex Cardall). Dirty laundry aired and recriminations thrown around ramp up the tension but when the most unhinged character of the lot, Doctor Rance (Jack Lord), arrives to trouble us all with his unprofessional professional opinions… well, he’s the blender’s blade that whips up the great frenzy.

The entire cast was magnificent. Each producing a crescendo of emotional turmoil over the course of the evening, giving us a most mirthful watch. Miss Jackson (Geraldine) and Mr Cardall (Beckett) both deserve special bravery mentions for spending more time cavorting around in their underwear than any of the other characters – Michael Hugo (as police Sergeant Match) coming a close third. But all deserve massive credit for their timing (the key to making this style of comedy work) and relentless energy.

After a catalogue of disastrous misunderstandings, assumptions, mistaken identities, cross dressing, inept policework, even inepter psychiatric conclusions, the ineptest of excuses and general ludicrous buffoonery the whole sorry saga reached a satisfying conclusion (well, perhaps not satisfying haha – only time (and a sequel) will tell!). One thing is certain – it’s a lorra lorra fun and I’m still not sure where the butler of the title comes in…

The set was rather impressive, reminding one of a Monty Python animated interlude and the costumes were all very stylish too with many a ladies (and gents) gown providing glamour (and laughs). Kudos to Bek Palmer for providing such lush creations.

There’s many wince-worthy subjects explored – the type of situations that only occur in a late 60’s/early 70’s style farce. This is a joyous nudge-nudge wink-wink towards that era’s No Sex Please, We’re British type of, ahem, affair. Probably best not to think too deeply about it, just revel in the madness which is rather apt given the play’s setting. The programme provides some explanation of the writer’s intentions which makes the subject matter much more understandable; Mr Orton using the stage as a platform to shine a light on moral mores that were outdated and to chip away at the institutions that he saw as stuffy.

So, a very enjoyable comedy that is well worth seeing. It’s not quite Jimmy Carr territory but if you are very (very) easily offended you may wish to take a pillow to giggle behind. But if you need the sunlit uplands of some gently (and at times highly) inappropriate comedy then you can do a lot worse than tickets to this classic. Highly recommended. In fact, I’d love to see it again myself.

Come From Away Review

Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield – until 20th July 2024

Reviewed by Sophie Dodworth

Winning four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical in London, and the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical on Broadway, Come From Away arrives in Sheffield with this great reputation. Will it live up to expectations? It most certainly does…

Following a real-life story of how 7,000 air passengers from all over the world were grounded during the wake of 9/11 in Gander. The small town (population 9000) is on the island of Newfoundland, Canada. The scene is set by the locals welcoming the audience to their typical morning routines in their hometown on ‘The Rock’. Little do the residents know how much everything is about to change! Follow the true experiences of how they almost double their population, over five days due to The United States airspace closing and 38 passenger jets becoming stranded with them.

All the cast members play multiple characters, and we follow the people from the plane alongside the town folk. It all works seamlessly and it’s clear to the audience when the characters switch where you are in the story, which is super impressive. There is a real sense of the Gander locals being great people, caring for their new visitors to ensure they are welcomed and have the items and resources they need. Juxtaposed at the side of the tragedy that has just taken place of 9/11, it’s emotions central. There are some beautiful stories in the true events that take place including a developing marriage of two people; Nick played by Daniel Crowder and Diane played by Kirsty Hoiles. They met during the five days in the town, returning there to get married at a later date. What a love story!

The cast are all so skilled, mature in their experience and crisp. There isn’t a moment on stage that you see their character become flimsy. All the voices on stage are strong and beautiful to listen to, particularly skilled vocally is Sara Poyzer playing Beverley, Anette and others. She has some wonderful solos. There are some fab comedic moments and the audience chuckle along regularly, especially to Jamal Zulfiqar, playing Kevin J, Ali and others, he has a great way of delivering his lines comically.

The set is really quite endearing, being just lined with what look like realistic tall trees on each side of the stage, you really get a feel for the sleek simplicity that is Canada. The lighting is used perfectly and without it, the audience would struggle to work out where you are scene-wise as there isn’t really much in the way of scene changes on stage with props, it is manipulated by the lighting, which is really quite a talent.

The show is wholesome and charming and really different to your typical musical. The stories are mainly told through the lyrics in the music and there’s a reserved and contained feeling to the production. There is no wonder it is such a hit. A must see for any theatre fan!

“WWDD? (What would Dolly do?) See this musical is what she would do. Toe-tapping tip top first class entertainment.”

I’m willing to bet that there’s not a soul that hasn’t heard of the global star, the iconic Dolly Parton, right? So it’s pretty surprising that it’s taken this long for a musical to pop up featuring all of her hits. Dolly has fully authorised the production too.

It’s been an instant hit following several shows in the USA and is now on a UK tour ahead of beginning a stint in the West End. Here You Come Again is a fresh, new and delightful musical comedy hitting all the right notes musically and comedically.

It’s unlikely that many of us would want to relive our isolated experiences during the pandemic, but that’s the unique setting for this surreal show.

When we meet Kevin (Steven Webb) he’s a few weeks into lockdown, his relationship has fallen apart, he’s back living with his parents and he’s self-medicating – oh and he’s in his forties on furlough from a job he’s not the biggest fan of.

He’s also reluctantly back in his childhood safe space of his parents attic, quarantining amidst all his old toys, complete with superhero bedspread and surrounded by hobbies of his younger years and of course, his Dolly Parton shrine. We all had one of those right?

For Kevin ‘WWDD?’ is his personal mantra and throughout the show her inspirational and comforting lyrics perfectly fit the story of Kevin’s transformation. Steven Webb has spent most of the past decade in the ‘Book of Mormon’ and this is a huge departure from that, as he adeptly carries the stage solo for some of the performance – he’s very impressive with physical comedy.

Dolly (Tricia Paoluccio) is honestly amazing, her voice when singing and her accent when speaking is flawless. She’s clearly a Dolly superfan too as her mannerisms match the style and southern drawl to a T. Tricia has nailed the look, the laugh, and the feel of the country superstar, she also co-wrote parts of the show. She gets to dazzle in plenty of fantastic outfits created by the wonderful mind of costume designer Paul Wills as well.

Throughout the show Dolly almost takes on a fairy godmother-like role, as a manifestation of Kevin’s imagination. With a lot of humour and songs, she helps Kevin realise that things could be worse and helps him sort his life out, step by step. Whilst she shares some life lessons and anecdotes about her own struggles and triumphs that not everyone will know.

The show is written by Bruce Vilanch with Gabriel Barre and Tricia Paoluccio. TV and theatre writer Jonathan Harvey, (who has written for both”Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” and “Coronation Street“) brings a new style and much welcomed twist to the jukebox musical, as they interject more British humour.

This production is the perfect form of escapism, which is created brilliantly by Paul Wills’ magical and nostalgic stage design. It’s a treasure trove and very cleverly built for reveals and creating the impression of extra space as the only location in the show. Look carefully and see how many childhood memories you can spot, there’s so many.

Here You Come Again is a belter of a new musical – hilarious, vibrant and full to the rafters with heart and hope. The fun show is packed with iconic songs like ‘Jolene’, ‘9 to 5’, ‘Islands in the Stream’, ‘I Will Always Love You’ and of course ‘Here You Come Again’ – it would be a crime to miss it.

So grab something covered in rhinestones and your best cowboy boots and book some seats.

After conquering the world’s leading cities many times over, Slava’s SnowShow, a visual and musical extravaganza, offers a dream-like vision that overflows with theatrical magic and humorous antics. The production is set within an absurd and surrealistic world of ‘fools on the loose’, a work of art in which each scene paints a picture: an unlikely shark swimming in a misty sea; clowns and the audience tangled up in a gigantic spider’s web; heart-breaking goodbyes with a coat rack on a railway platform; audience members hypnotized by giant balloons; and an out-of-this-world snowstorm that’s sure to leave audiences spellbound.

Slava’s SnowShow is the recipient of more than 20 international awards, including an Olivier Award for Best Entertainment, a Drama Desk Award, and a Tony Award nomination. In addition to unanimous public acclaim, the production is a darling with critics who have declared it “a thing of rare theatrical beauty not to be missed” (Daily Telegraph) and confessed, “my heart leapt… [SnowShow] induces waves of giggles and sighs of pleasure.” (New York Times).

Born in a small town in central Russia, Slava Polunin discovered the art of pantomime in high school. As he grew to adulthood in Leningrad, he developed an eccentric version of the form, which he lovingly dubbed ‘Expressive Idiotism.’ From 1979 on, Slava quickly became a fixture on Russian stages and TV, sharing his gifts and continuing to redefine the art of clowning with his poetic and poignant approach to comic performance. This discovery would reach its zenith with Slava’s SnowShow, which burst onto world stages at the 1996 Edinburgh Festival to universal praise and wonder.

Since its debut, the work has travelled all over the world, with more than 12,000 performances in over 225 cities and 40 counties.

I have always been a fan of the late, great Kay Mellors work on the tv but this was the first time I have seen a production of hers on the stage. And it was really, really good. It was typical Kay Mellor, with very likeable characters, a brilliant storyline and was funny and heartbreaking in equal measures, she really was the most brilliant storyteller.

The Syndicate tell the story of five people who all work together in a local shop. On the day that they find out that they are going to lose their jobs, as the shop has been sold and is going to be demolished, they win big on the Lottery rollover… £24,000,000 big, and as they are all members of a lottery syndicate that is nearly £5,000,000 each! When the lottery representative (Jade Golding) arrives at the shop to verify their win the fun then really starts.

The staff are all big characters, brothers Stuart (Benedict Shaw) and Jamie (Oliver Anthony). Denise (Samantha Giles), Leanne (Rosa Coduri-Fulford) and the manager Bob (William Ilkley) and we learn about their lives and some of the secrets they keep. Stuart needs money for a deposit on a flat, his girlfriend Amy (Brooke Vincent) has moved back to her mums taking their son and baby daughter with her. Jamie owes money to some very dodgy people, Leanne, who lives with her daughter and is not quite what she seems and Denise, who loves dogs and her bone-idle husband. Jamie hatches a plot to steal money from the shop with the help of his brother Stuart, unfortunately Bob comes back during the robbery and is badly injured so the police arrive in the shape of DCI Newall (Jerome Ngonadi) who is determined to get to the bottom of what happened.

The story is fast paced and it kept my interest throughout, the cast are really good and they make their characters very believable. I enjoyed this show would really recommend that you go and see this if you can.

The highly anticipated production has its US premiere this July at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, the prestigious theater that has launched productions such as SIX, Illinoise, and The Notebook ahead of their Broadway debuts. The Lord of the Rings – a Musical Tale had its initial production at The Watermill Theatre in the United Kingdom, receiving rave reviews with The Guardian calling it the ‘Greatest Show on Middle Earth’.

This journey to the magical realms of Middle-earth tells the story of The Lord of the Rings from the Hobbits’ perspective, as J.R.R. Tolkien’s trilogy of books is brought to life on the stage, performed by a stellar cast of multi-skilled actor-musicians.

Created under license from Middle-earth Enterprises (the owner of exclusive worldwide motion picture and stage rights for The Lord of the Rings), this adventure through the epic realm of Middle-earth has been beloved by generations of readers. With book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna (Maddie, La Cava)  and Matthew Warchus (Groundhog Day) and original music by Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman (Bombay Dreams, Slumdog Millionaire), Finnish folk band Värttinä, and Tony Award winner Christopher Nightingale (Matilda the Musical), this theatrical event celebrates community, courage and camaraderie to create an unforgettable experience for longtime fans and newcomers alike. “Tolkien would have been so proud” (WhatsOnStage).

As the Hobbits celebrate Bilbo Baggins’ eleventy-first birthday in the Shire, he gifts his nephew Frodo his most precious belonging – a gold ring. This fateful moment launches Frodo on a legendary and perilous quest across Middle-earth to the darkest realms of Mordor, to vanquish evil with his loyal Fellowship. The dynamic folk-inspired score is performed live by the company on stage, weaving together original music with storytelling. The New Zealand premiere comes fresh off the 70th anniversary of the publication of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first book in The Lord of the Rings trilogy which debuted in 1954.

“We are delighted to share Director Paul Hart’s imagining of The Lord of the Rings on stage with New Zealand audiences before it embarks on its journey to entertain audiences around the world.” said Kevin Wallace on behalf of the producers. “This production that originated in the English Shires, before its US Premiere in Chicago, comes to Auckland where we invite New Zealand to join us for Bilbo Baggins’ Long-expected Party.”

Glen Crighton, Acting Director Performing Arts at Auckland Live continues. “I’m excited that The Civic will be hosting the Australasian premiere of The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale.  The iconic status of Tolkien’s epic tale can’t be understated, and we look forward to welcoming local and international audiences alike into Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s own iconic venue to embark on what promises to be a remarkable theatrical experience.”
