Award-winning director Igor Golyak, winner of 4 Off Broadway (Lucille Lortel) Awards for Our Class, will direct the UK premiere of Anna Ziegler’s acclaimed play, The Wanderers, opening at the Marylebone Theatre from 17 October to 29 November, with a press night on 22 October.

Following its critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run at the Laura Pels Theatre in 2023, where the Wall Street Journal called it ‘an absorbing, twisty and thoughtful play’ and ‘the finest play of the year!’, the Wanderers now makes its UK premiere with a brand-new production at the Marylebone Theatre, designed by Berlin based-Jan Pappelbaum, Head of Set-Design-Department of Schaubühne theatre in Berlin since 2000.

Abe is a celebrated writer with a restless spirit and certain disdain for religion—including his own. He is married to Sophie, another writer, whose first book was overlooked. She doubts she has a second book in her— Abe has his doubts too. Their marriage, while rooted in love, is marked by tension, quiet rivalry, and unresolved discontent.

Then an unexpected email from a movie star sets Abe on a flirtatious and increasingly risky journey. What starts as curiosity spirals into something deeper—an unravelling of long-buried truths – threatening his marriage, his sense of self, and the life he thought he built.

Meanwhile, in another time and place, Esther and Schmuli are shy young Orthodox Jews entering an arranged marriage after only one meeting. Gradually, Esther finds herself suffocated by the strictures of her ultra-religious world. A dissatisfaction that couldn’t have higher stakes when it starts to jeopardise her family and the foundation of the only life she’s ever known.

These two narratives intertwine in The Wanderers, a story about longing, connection, and the invisible threads that bind us across generations. Can we ever truly escape the inheritance of our past?

Anna Ziegler is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter whose work has been staged around the world, from New York to London to Tokyo. She is best known for Photograph 51, which starred Nicole Kidman in the West End and won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Play. She is currently adapting the play for film, to be directed by Tom Hooper. Ziegler’s acclaimed body of work includes Actually(Los Angeles Ovation Award for Playwriting), Boy (NY Outer Critics Circle nomination), The Janeiad (2025 Susan Smith Blackburn finalist, 2025 Steinberg Award citation), and The Wanderers, which received the San Diego Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Play when it premiered at The Old Globe, before it went on to be produced around the country and at Roundabout Theatre Company.

In 2026, her new work Antigone (This Play I Read in High School) will premiere at The Public Theatre in New York. On screen, she is developing projects with CBS Studios, FilmNation, and Marielle Heller.

Igor Golyak is a Ukrainian-born, award-winning director and founder of -Arlekin! and Zero Gravity (zero-G) Theater Lab. A bold innovator in hybrid and virtual theatre, his acclaimed 2024 production of Our Class at BAM won four Lucille Lortel Awards, including Outstanding Director. Other notable works include The Orchard starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Jessica Hecht Off-Broadway, The Merchant of Venice at Classic Stage Company, and the US premiere of The Dybbuk.

During the pandemic, Golyak’s groundbreaking virtual productions —chekhovOSState vs. Natasha Banina, and WITNESS—earned international acclaim and multiple New York Times Critics Picks. His work has been honoured with Elliot Norton Awards, a Broadway World Best Director Award, and a special citation for innovation.

A graduate of the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts and the Schukin Theatre Institute, Golyak has directed and taught internationally. His company -Arlekin, formed of immigrant artists, has performed across the US, UK, and Europe. He is the founder of the #ArtistsforUkraine initiative.

Full casting and creatives to be announced.

Igor Golyak said, “Theatre, at its essence, is a quiet conversation with the soul, unravelling the delicate threads between tradition and change. In The Wanderers, we see the poetic tragedy of longing—beautiful, endless, and profoundly human.”

Anna Ziegler said, I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring these five characters—each restless, each full of yearning—to wander in London under Igor Golyak’s inventive, poetic, and emotionally rigorous eye. I can’t wait to see their world unfold on his watch.”

The Wanderers is produced by Sarig Peker of Grapevine Shoot Productions & Keren Misgav of Norel Productions (www.norelproductions.co.uk)

Critical acclaim for previous productions of The Wanderers

“The Wanderers is that rare play worth seeing twice, with a plot to ruminate on for a lifetime.” — Washington City Paper

This absorbing, twisty, and thoughtful play is the finest play of the year!…In addition to writing with searching depth, Ms. Ziegler can be quite funny…A play of superior quality.” – Charles Isherwood, The Wall Street Journal

A charming, penetrating, deeply moving new play—it sparkles.” – The New York Sun

The Wanderers lasts only 105 minutes, yet effectively and expertly holds enough storylines for a half dozen lesser plays.” – The Wrap

“[Ziegler], an increasingly important writer, pulls off a high-wire act with her probing, admirably original world premiere play The Wanderers.” — San Diego Union Tribune

“[Ziegler’s play is] thoughtful, compassionate, funny…The playwright deftly displays the barbed and tender sides of [the central characters’] relationship…But The Wanderers is about more than bittersweet relationships and coping with the past; it’s about the human tendency to be chronically dissatisfied. Confused and yearning, Esther wonders, “Who really understands whether or not they are happy?” — The Washington Post

Ovation Rights acquires Sir Richard Stilgoe’s iconic musical catalogue in landmark deal and announces up to $100m backing to support artists’ legacies

Ovation Rights acquires Sir Richard Stilgoe’s iconic musical catalogue in landmark deal and announces up to $100m backing to support artists’ legacies.

Ovation Rights today announces its acquisition of Sir Richard Stilgoe’s rights in some of the most successful stage musicals of all time, including The Phantom of the Opera and Starlight Express.

The partnership represents one of the most significant acquisitions of theatrical rights in a major move echoing a growing trend in the music industry, where artists from Bob Dylan to Justin Bieber have sold their music catalogues, and marks a pivotal step in recognising the enduring value of theatrical rights and the legacies behind them.

Founded and led by producer Jamie Hendry and former Amazon executive Philip Green, Ovation Rights acquires theatrical rights by introducing the scale and strategy ordinarily seen with music catalogue acquisitions to the creators and rightsholders of major plays and musicals. The team collaborate closely with authors, composers, lyricists and estates, working as custodians to protect legacies, honour artistic visions and passionately champion works.

Ovation Rights’ scale and ambition is underpinned by a major capital commitment from funds managed by BlackRock’s Direct Private Opportunities business.

Sir Richard Stilgoe:“Together with the trustees of my foundation, I have been working closely with Jamie to ensure the custodianship of my work on ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Starlight Express’ and ‘Cats’ rests with someone who truly understands and respects the theatre. In Jamie and the team at Ovation Rights, I have found a partner I can trust wholeheartedly to protect and champion the work I am immensely proud of.

Jamie’s deep roots in our industry, coupled with Ovation Rights’ vision for the rights of authors, composers and lyricists, make this partnership a perfect fit. Ovation Right and The Really Useful Group share my unwavering commitment to preserving and championing the work Andrew and I, together with our many collaborators, created all those years ago, and which I hope audiences will continue to enjoy for many more years to come.’

Jamie Hendry: “Richard’s extraordinary contributions have not just shaped British musical theatre, they’ve transformed the global stage. I’m honoured to be entrusted as the custodian of his remarkable legacy and to have helped him unlock the future value of his contributions in these iconic works to support his ongoing charitable work.

In partnering with BlackRock, we are poised to continue investing in artists and rightsholders with significant capital and care, ensuring their contributions endure and thrive for decades to come”

Who Is Claude Cahun? Review

Southwark Playhouse – until 12 July 2025

Reviewed by Claire Roderick

3***

Who is Claude Cahun? This is the question that Cahun themselves seeks to answer in D.R. Hill’s play. Born Lucy Schwob, Cahun’s explorations of identity and gender – “Neuter is the only gender that suits me” – propelled her art and writing, and also her actions during the German occupation of Jersey during WWII.

Beginning with a tableau that matches one of Claude’s photographs, the narrative switches between scenes from Claude’s childhood to their life in Paris and then Jersey. David Furlong’s assured direction manages to keep the narrative threads coherent, and the change of tone from surrealism to historical biography are smooth and mostly effective.

Juliette Demoulin’s set is bizarrely functional, with household furniture and sculpture fusing under Matthew Bliss’s atmospheric lighting design. Jeffrey Choy’s projections of Claude Cahun’s photographs are used stylishly as the cast reenact the creative process behind the images wearing Carla Joy Evans’ costumes.

After a miserable childhood, unaccepted as they question their gender by a mother with mental health problems and comforted by a more liberal father, Claude’s life changes when they meet Suzanne Malherbe, who becomes Claude’s photographer and takes the name Marcel Moore. They fall in love and leave for Paris, the male surrealists cannot accept Cahun as anything other than a woman – shown in gloriously clownish performances from Gethin Anderson and Ben Bela Bӧhm.

The couple leave Paris for Jersey, living as sisters and drawing interest from the locals with their sculptures and nude bathing that becomes dangerous when the island is occupied. The couple begin a campaign of resistance against the Germans, doctoring propaganda posters, painting slogans and scattering messages around the island. Claude assumes the identity of “The Soldier With No Name” and despite a few close shaves, they succeed in spreading dissent amongst the German soldiers. The chauvinistic attitudes of the German officers mean that they cannot imagine that the two women are acting alone. Hill shows the contrasting attitudes of the absolute believer in the Gestapo and the more pragmatic and humane career army officer to the couple, but both men repeat the mantra of “unnatural women.”

Rivkah Bunker’s bravely emotional performance as Claude is a wonderful contrast to Amelia Armande’s more stoic Marcel. Armande plays Marcel as Claude’s shield from the world, and her love for Claude is made clear, but glimmers of resentment and sadness leak through as she reminds Claude that she is always introduced as “my photographer” Gethin Anderson, Ben Bela Bӧhm and Sharon Drain play multiple roles with aplomb.

The fascinating story is important and this is a brave attempt to capture the views and actions of Claude Cahun, but the question asked in the play’s title remains unanswered.

Kieran Hodgson: Voice of America Review

Soho Theatre – until 28 June 2025

Reviewed by Claire Roderick

5*****

Kieran Hodgson channels his prodigious talent for impressions into a hilarious but heartfelt exploration of how his idea of the American Dream has evolved, and how the country is viewed.

Conversational and self-deprecating, Hodgson is utterly charming as he recounts his big break in the DC blockbuster The Flash. Unfortunately, the stars behaviour buried the film, so Kieran’s key role as “Sandwich Guy” isn’t widely known. Phone calls with his “super-excited” American agent that he isn’t believable as an American lead him to question whether his idea of an American is true today. Growing up with teacher parents who strictly rationed or downright vetoed “American rubbish” in their home, Hodgson describes the mystical allure of American movies and music through his childhood, and how his performance based on this doesn’t ring true in today’s world, so decides to explore how the country is viewed today when the overwhelming output we receive is on social media rather than polished Hollywood PR.

Hodgson brings out the big political guns in his parade of voices from the US’s recent history – quotes from Kennedy, George W and, of course, Trump say more about the social and political climate in the US over time in a few lines than pages of research. Rather than go down the rabbit hole of trying to understand Trump’s outbursts, Hodgson reminds us that Trump is beyond parody and refuses to use his voice – but he keeps creeping in! His throwaway Thatcher impression made people spit out their drinks while a fantastic running joke about his lack of improv skills is the gift that keeps on giving.

Anecdotes about trips to the US with his student friends – who thought they could take a quick drive down to Miami from New York for spring break – and with his husband provide some lovely reflective moments. Hodgson’s story about his visit to the opera in New York captures the brashness, openness and surprising depth of American culture and allows him to let rip with a bonkers New York accent while a visit to an English themed pub (why?) helps him explain the way we view the USA.

An intelligent, thoughtfully written and layered hour of brilliant comedy that is stuffed full of impressions, nostalgia and sharp observations, Kieran Hodgson: Voice of America is unmissable

Press Review

Jack Studio Theatre – until 5 July 2025

Film producer David is interviewed live on TV as the Hollywood buzz predicts that his film about escaped slaves is set to be nominated for multiple Goldies that day. The film is catnip for award panels: an auteur filmmaker’s take on a true story about slavery – but nobody but the Goldies committee has actually seen it. When the bombshell revelation that the film’s main character, played by a white man – the star of a reality series called “Hot Bods” – was in reality a former slave it’s time for frantic damage control at the offices of Smack Wave Films. Can David and his partner Kate fix everything in time for the nominations?

Written and directed by Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller, this smart Hollywood comedy captures the hypocrisy and shallowness of the industry and the marketing machinations of production companies (David’s explanation of his PLAP system is hilariously vacuous.) Even though he never appears, writer and director Joe George Frampton – at a retreat – is clearly drawn as a pretentious berk. The extract from the script of Catch Me Some Freedom included in the Press script is toe-curlingly bad – and hilarious. Just look at this from the title page:

Catch Me Some Freedom

a Joe George Frampton Experience

shepherded by Joe George Frampton

The opening scene, with Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller as David sweating and twitching as he tries to compose himself under the unseen interviewer’s and the TV studio lights’ glare is phenomenal. Brimmer-Beller tells us so much about the character with his frozen expressions and spouting of meaningless jargon when trying to be politically correct.

When we see David with Kate (Rosie Hart), it becomes obvious who is the blue-sky thinker and who is the one that actually does the hard graft. Kate and David’s brainstorming of ideas to save their reputations, their company and the film is wonderfully scattergun and circular. Comparisons with past “white saviour” films are thrown around as the pair seem to despair that those producers and actors were let off the hook.

Their frenetic attempts to contact useful important people, and the depths they have gone to schmooze these people to garner Goldie nominations is simultaneously impressive and pathetic. Brimmer-Beller nails David’s oily sense of self-preservation and Hart’s initial down-to-earth practicality shatters nicely as we find out what she has been willing to do to get Goldie nominations. The actors bounce off each other brilliantly – this isn’t a healthy working relationship, but it’s believable. Press is smart, very funny and performed with energy and wit

As St Leonard’s Hospice celebrates its Ruby Anniversary this year West End performer and international multi award winning Cabaret star Ian Stroughair is uniting York’s finest performers and stars from the West End to raise money for a cause that is extremely personal.

You might know Ian as the UK’s Queen of live vocal drag, Velma Celli. Ian has appeared in West End productions of Chicago, Cats, Fame and Rent and as Velma he is still the only person ever to appear in Eastenders as “Themselves” in a very special guest appearance performing a gig in the Queen Vic!

The hospice cared for Ian’s mum Pauline in her final days battling cancer.

He says: “It was so difficult when my mum was ill, but the staff at the hospice provided a level of care that was above and beyond. They gave us the space and freedom to spend those precious last days by Mum’s side in such a warm and supportive environment.”

By a sad coincidence, Ian’s close friend Sarah Walker’s father Peter died at the hospice just three weeks before Pauline. Retired policeman Peter was better known as writer Nicholas Rhea, whose Constable series of books were turned into the hugely popular TV series Heartbeat.

Sadly, Sarah was back at the hospice just a few months later: “What my sister Tricia thought was a stomach bug turned out to be an aggressive form of cancer. She died in St Leonard’s five weeks after being diagnosed, and just eight months after Dad.”

Ian and Sarah produced a live steam kitchen concert in 2020 to help support the hospice and always strive to help in any way they can.

Ian came up with the idea of a charity show after learning that St Leonard’s receives just a quarter of its annual running costs from the NHS. The other six million pounds has to come from fund raising.

“All of the artists and musicians are donating their time and talent for free, none of us are taking a single penny, so as much money as possible will go directly to the hospice,” says Ian.

Sarah Atkinson, Community and Events Manager at St Leonard’s adds: “We’re really excited about the upcoming Voices United evening at the Grand Opera House as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. We’re deeply grateful to everyone involved, those performing, organising, and supporting the event. The compassionate care we provide at St Leonard’s Hospice is only possible thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, and we very much appreciate the continued support. So book your tickets for a glittering evening of entertainment and join us in celebrating both the talent and spirit that make our work possible.”

The ‘Voices United: Rubies for our Angels’ show will take place at 7.30pm on Friday 18th July 2025 at the Grand Opera House, York. Tickets prices range from just £20 and upwards making this fabulous event affordable for all! There will be other opportunities to donate on the evening too!
