The full cast is today announced for the fabulous killer comedy sensation Death Drop. Following rave reviews, a hugely successful UK tour and two sold out West End runs, the smash hit show is sashaying back into London for a triumphant third time. Joining the previously announced Jujubee as Summer Raine, Kitty Scott-Claus as Shazza and Holly Stars as the Bottomley Sisters are: Drag Race UK star Vinegar Strokes as Lady Von Fistenburg, George Orell as Phil Maker, Richard Energy as Rich Whiteman, Anna Phylactic as Morgan Pierce and Apple Derrieres swinging in and covering the entire show in extraordinary fashion.

The producers are also thrilled to announce that RuPaul’s Drag Race star Latrice Royale, will be reprising her role of Summer Raine and joining the cast for the final two weeks of the run on 13th April, after Jujubee departs following her final performance on 10th April.

Latrice Royale said: “I can’t wait to return to the cast of Death Drop, get on that stage and perform in the Criterion Theatre. It’s going to be so much fun; I don’t think the West End is ready to have me back!

Described by Attitude as a “killer show” and “rollicking good fun” by The Guardian, Death Drop is written by Holly Stars. This “dazzling and delightfully camp comedy” is “jam-packed with hilarious one liners” and guaranteed to provide laugh-out-loud comedy that we all need right now. This show is like nothing you’ve seen ever before!

It’s 1991 and a gaggle of guests gather on Tuck Island for a soirée like no other. The tension rises as the outrageous guests reveal their suspicious and sordid pasts, and one by one they sashay away, until at the last, nerve-shredding, side-splitting moment the surviving guests find out who-dunnit!

This rampant, raucous, ridiculous romp of a murder mystery serves up all the drama, comedy, twists and turns you’ll ever need!

THEATRE TOURS RETURN AT THE ROYAL SHAKESPEARE THEATRE IN STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

THE RSC’S ICONIC TOWER ALSO REOPENS

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s popular Theatre Tours in Stratford-upon-Avon will resume from Saturday 30 April with a new 1-hour guided tour which, when possible, will include first-time public access to the Company’s newly developed Costume Workshop, the largest in-house costume-making department of any British theatre*

Led by the RSC’s experienced team of tour guides, the newly launched Theatre Tour will invite audiences to explore the public and backstage areas of the building, and find out more about the unique history of the RSC and its buildings in Stratford. The guides will also bring the tours to life with new and engaging stories about one of the most famous theatre companies in the world.

The RSC’s iconic Tower will also reopen from Tuesday 15 March. Standing 36 metres tall, and with views across Warwickshire, entrance to the Tower will be free, and prebooking is not required. It will be open daily, closing at 4pm.

Kevin Wright, RSC Head of Commercial Development, said: “We are delighted to be offering public theatre tours again, after a hiatus of over two years. We have taken this time to refresh the tours, so that, when possible, they will include a visit to our new Costume Workshop, giving people a glimpse into the work of the largest in-house costume-making department of any British theatre.  The guides will also have lots of new stories to tell about the RSC’s rich history, celebrating the diversity of our productions and the people who have worked here. We are also very pleased, once again, to offer everyone the chance to visit the top of our Tower with its spectacular views.”

Theatre tours will run daily, normally with four tours a day, apart from on matinee days when there will be two, and on Sundays when there will be three.

Theatre tour tickets cost £12 per person.  A family ticket is also available offering half-price tickets for up to four family members under the age of 18 with every full priced adult ticket purchased.

RETURN OF WEST END FLEA MARKET

Theatrical charity, Acting for Others,today announces the welcome return of the West End Flea Market, following its hugely successful debut in 2019, which saw crowds of theatre fans lining up for showstopping goodies and a chance to meet West End stars, raising over £26,000 in one morning. The event will take place on Saturday 21 May at St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden.

Top West End shows will set up a variety of uniquely designed stalls offering theatrical memorabilia, signed posters, bric-a-brac and special items for auction. Each will be tailored by the company to celebrate their productions, with themed merchandise and special limited-edition collectables.

The shows hosting a stall will compete to win in a brand-new theatrical challenge, with judges to be announced. The public are invited to come and cheer on their favourite show and the winner will be announced at the event. In addition, there will be signings, a theatrical tombola, auctions and all sorts of exciting theatrical memorabilia up for grabs as well as the chance to meet stars from hit shows.

Come join the judges as they navigate the best and the boldest stalls welcoming the newest shows in the West End alongside many long running firm fan favourites, celebrating the return of the West End.

West End Flea Market is organised in aid of Acting for Others, a fundraising organisation for 14 UK theatrical and welfare charities.

TO STREAM THEIR HIT REVIVAL OF  

FRANKENSTEIN

Blackeyed Theatre have today announced their acclaimed production of Frankenstein, which is currently touring nationally, will be streamed on Digital Theatre’s website from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 5 March to coincide with their performances at Greenwich Theatre.  

Frankenstein, adapted by Nick Lane from John Ginman’s original 2016 adaptation, will be one of the very first productions streamed on Digital Theatre’s EVOD (Event Video On Demand) platform. It will be available on a pay-per-view basis and streamed as live at specific times; Wednesday 2 – Saturday 5 March at 7.30pm, plus a US stream on Saturday 5 March at 7.30pm EST. The EVOD package gives audiences exclusive wrap-around content, including virtual backstage access and interviews, before and in the interval of each performance, providing a unique, interactive and shared online theatre experience. The production will then be available on demand via Digital Theatre’s TVOD platform for three weeks from 8 March. 

Artistic Director of Blackeyed Theatre, Adrian McDougall said:

The EVOD model will, I believe, offer online audiences a more immediate, shared and inclusive experience while being more sustainable for producers and theatres. The role of Victor Frankenstein will be played by Robert Bradley (Hedda Gabler, National Theatre, Joe Strummer Takes A Walk, Cervantes Theatre, Encounters With The Past, Hampton Court Palace). Max Gallagher (Brief Encounter, Watermill Newbury, War Horse, National Theatre, Richard III, Northern Broadsides) returns to reprise the role of Henry Clerval, while the role of Robert Walton is played by Benedict Hastings (Wolf Hall, RSC, Three Guys Naked From the Waist Down, Finborough, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt, Kenny Wax). Billy Irving (War Horse Tenth Anniversary Tour, National Theatre) is Chief Puppeteer and the voice of The Creature, while recent Rose Bruford graduate Alice E Mayer makes her professional stage debut as Elizabeth Lavenza.  

Frankenstein is adapted by Nick Lane, who was Associate Director and Literary Manager at Hull Truck from 2006 to 2014, with original music composed by Ron McAllister. The production is directed by Eliot Giuralarocca and musically directed by Ellie Verkerk, while the puppetry is created and directed by Yvonne Stone. Completing the artistic team are Victoria Spearing (set design), Anne Thomson (costume design) and Alan Valentine (lighting design). The original 2016 production of Frankenstein was scripted by John Ginman with lighting designed by Charlotte McClelland. 

In Geneva of 1816, Victor Frankenstein obsesses in the pursuit of nature’s secret, the elixir of life itself. But nothing can prepare him for what he creates, and so begins a gripping life or death adventure taking him to the ends of the earth and beyond.  

As well as featuring live music and ensemble storytelling, Blackeyed Theatre’s highly theatrical telling of Shelley’s gothic masterpiece is unique for its use of Bunraku-style puppetry to portray The Creature. Designed and built by Yvonne Stone (Warhorse, His Dark Materials), the 6’4” puppet, operated by up to three actors at any one time, adds an exciting new dimension to the retelling of the classic story.  

Director Eliot Giuralarocca said: 

“For me, the beauty and excitement of theatre is that it is live, unfolding in front of an audience as they watch, and the decision to make the creature a life-sized puppet – beautifully and painstakingly made by Yvonne Stone – seemed to fit perfectly with this approach. Frankenstein is obsessed with re-animating dead matter by finding the spark of creation, the ‘elixir of life’. We bring our creature to life theatrically, animating, manipulating and breathing life into the puppet right in front of the audience and in doing so I hope we present a lovely theatrical metaphor for the act of creation in the story itself and give audiences the chance for audiences to share in that creation.” 

Frankenstein is produced by Blackeyed Theatre in association with South Hill Park Arts Centre and supported by Arts Council England. 

The production is currently touring across England until 29 March 2022.

The award-winning Original Theatre Company are delighted to announce Miss Marple’s return to the stage in a brand new production of Rachel Wagstaff’s acclaimed adaptation of Agatha Christie’s THE MIRROR CRACK’D. The production, directed by Philip Franks, will begin its UK Tour at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne on 8 September 2022.

THE MIRROR CRACK’D will star Susie Blake as Miss Marple, with further casting to be announced.

In 1960s England, a wind of change is blowing through the land. It has even reached the sleepy village of St Mary Mead. There’s a new housing estate, which alarms the villagers as much as it intrigues them and, even more unsettling, a rich American film star has bought the manor house. Jane Marple, confined to a chair after an accident, is wondering if life has passed her by. Then there is a shocking murder, and Miss Marple must unravel a web of lies, danger and tragedy. This adaptation of Agatha Christie’s famous novel brings real emotional depth and psychological insight to a thrilling story of secrets, loss and revenge.

The Mirror Crack’d From Side to Side was published in the UK in 1962 and adapted as a feature film, The Mirror Crack’d, in 1980, starring Angela Lansbury as Miss Marple, Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak, Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis.  On television, adaptations of the novel have starred Joan Hickson as Miss Marple in 1992 and Julia McKenzie as Miss Marple in 2011.

Director Philip Franks said of the new stage adaptation, “Rachel Wagstaff’s new version of Agatha Christie’s fascinating mystery has real heart and depth as well as tension. It’s witty, exciting, fresh and surprising.”

Rachel Wagstaff said, “I am so excited to be working with The Original Theatre Company on this new production of The Mirror Crack’d, a fascinating mystery, packed with a rich constellation of characters, all struggling with loneliness and the long shadows cast by grief.  I have always loved Miss Marple’s wry observations about human nature and her desire to put the world quietly to rights, so it’s a pleasure to welcome back the acclaimed and wonderful Susie Blake to play the role of Jane Marple.”

Susie Blake is best known for playing the Continuity Announcer in Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV, as well as her regular roles of Bev Unwin in ITV’s Coronation Street and Hillary Nicholson in BBC’s Mrs Brown’s Boys. She has recently appeared in series one and two of Kate & Koji (ITV), Not Going Out (BBC One) and The Real Marigold Hotel (BBC One). Her films include Fierce Creatures and Nativity 3: Dude, Where’s My Donkey?!. Her theatre credits include Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical (Hall for Cornwall), Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em (UK Tour), My Fair Lady (Grange Festival), Grumpy Old Women Live 2 & 3, When We Are Married (West End), Pygmalion (Chichester Festival Theatre), Madame Morrible in Wicked (West End) and Belinda Blair in Noises Off (National Theatre).

Tom Francis is to play Romeo in & Juliet, as the award-winning show today announces new cast. Tom, who starred in the recent acclaimed production of Rent, will join the company next month, in the joyous musical which won 3 Olivier Awards and 6 Whatsonstage Awards.

Julius D’Silva will also join the cast as amorous Frenchman Lance, opposite Keala Settle as Nurse. Keala – internationally renowned for her starring role in the global smash hit movie The Greatest Showman in which she performed the iconic song “This Is Me” – will be making her West End debut.

They will all join the production from Tuesday 29 March 2022 at the Shaftesbury Theatre, where the show recently extended its booking period through until Saturday 24 September 2022.

Miriam-Teak Lee – who was awarded the Olivier Award for Best Actress in 2020 for her performance as Juliet – leads a cast including Cassidy Janson, who also won an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Anne Hathaway, Oliver Tompsett as William Shakespeare, Tim Mahendran as Francois and Alex Thomas-Smith as May.

David Bedella continues his Olivier Award-winning performance as Lance until Saturday 26 March, as does Jordan Luke Gage as Romeo and Melanie La Barrie as Nurse.

London Theatre Week, the successful and popular West End theatre ticket promotion, has announced its return. The initiative, which is dedicated to helping audiences experience the breadth of entertainment available in London’s vibrant theatres by offering the best prices for the widest selection of West End shows, will run from Monday 21 February until Sunday 6 March.Even more shows are available this time around with prices from £15, Tickets are now on sale at londontheatreweek.com.

The initiative, which is in its fourth year and bigger than ever before, sees nearly 50 shows taking part. This includes classic West End productions and critically acclaimed shows such as The Lion King, The Book of Mormon, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Also, as part of the expansion of the initiative in 2022, newcomers to the West End stage such as Frozen, Back To The Future, and Cinderella are included.

Similar to in autumn 2021, London Theatre Week arrives at a time where the capital’s theatres are once again fully reopened and welcoming audiences back to experience live entertainment. Following the challenges brought about by the Covid pandemic, the promotion gives Londoners and visitors the chance to return to the theatre, and provides much-needed additional sales to dozens of productions across the city.

The producers of the highly acclaimed UK tour of Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em are delighted to announce the casting of Susie Blake returning as Frank’s disapproving mother-in-law Mrs Fisher, Moray Treadwell as Mr Luscombe/Mr Worthington, James Paterson as Father O’Hara and Ben Watson as Desmond/Constable. They join the previously announced Joe Pasquale as the loveable but accident-prone Frank Spencer and Sarah Earnshaw as his long-suffering wife Betty. Also in the cast are Nick Wray and Alice Osmanski.

Susie Blake regularly appeared in the TV series and comedy specials of Victoria Wood, Russ Abbot and Stanley Baxter, and is perhaps particularly loved as the Continuity Announcer in Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV.  She recently has appeared in Silky Hotel (BBC iPlayer), Kate & Koji (Series 1&2 – ITV), Not Going Out (BBC One), The Real Marigold Hotel (BBC One). Moray Treadwell recently finished filming The Witcher: Blood Origin (Netflix). His theatre credits include No Man’s Land (UK tour), Hysteria (national tour for London Classic Theatre Company), The Railway Children (King’s Cross Theatre), The Beatles LOVE Show (Cirque Du Soleil, Las Vegas), Waiting For Godot (Italian tour), The Importance of Being Earnest (Vienna’s English Theatre) and The Ruling Class (Frankfurt’s English Theatre).

James Paterson made his London debut in the original production of The Phantom of the Opera. During his long association with the show he played the title role when Michael Crawford was indisposed and also played M. Andre. He became Resident Director for the national tours and the London production. His other theatre credits include Sunset Boulevard (London Coliseum), Half a Sixpence (Chichester Festival Theatre), Cats (UK/International Tour), Cinderella, Dick Whittington and Snow White (The London Palladium). James most recently played Herr Schulz in Cabaret for ARTS Aberdeen. His television credits include London’s Burning, Close To Home and Birds of a Feather.

Ben Watson is an actor, writer, director and comedian who recently starred in Around the World in 80 Days (Blackpool Grand Theatre). He regularly performs his own solo comedy show The History of Everything in 60 minutes. NATIONAL THEATRE SUMMER SEASON WITH LEADING ACTORS FROM STAGE AND SCREEN

The National Theatre today announces new productions for all three South Bank stages this summer: Jack Absolute Flies Again in the Olivier theatre, Much Ado About Nothing in the Lyttelton theatre and All of Us in the Dorfman theatre with tickets on sale to the public from Thursday 10 March.  

Jack Absolute Flies Again a riotous and comedic new version of Sheridan’s The Rivals, co-written by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Oliver Chris (Emma), will play in the Olivier theatre in July. Originally due to open in April 2020, Emily Burns (The Comeback) will direct Laurie Davidson (Cats) as Jack Absolute alongside Caroline Quentin (Jonathan Creek) as Mrs Malaprop, Natalie Simpson (Three Sisters) as Lydia Languish, Kelvin Fletcher (Emmerdale) as Dudley Scunthorpe and Kerry Howard (Him & Her) as Lucy, James Corrigan, Theo Cowan, Jordan Metcalfe, George Kemp, Akshay Sharan, Tim Steed, Geoffrey Towers, Shona White and Helena Wilson also join the company.  

Set and costume design is by Mark Thompson, lighting design by Tim Lutkin, composer is Paul Englishby, sound design by Paul Arditti and video and projection design by Jeff Sugg. Physical comedy director is Toby Park and choreography is by Lizzi Gee. Staff director is Cara Nolan.  

Simon Godwin (Romeo & Juliet) will return to the Lyttelton theatre to direct Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in July. Set in the Italian Riviera at the fictional Hotel Messina, Katherine Parkinson (Home, I’m Darling) will play Beatrice with John Heffernan (The Pursuit of Love) as Benedick in Shakespeare’s timeless romantic comedy. With set design by Anna Fleischle, costume design by Evie Gurney and lighting design by Lucy Carter. Composer is Michael Bruce and sound design by Christopher Shutt. Staff Director is Hannah Joss.  

Award-winning writer and comedian Francesca Martinez will make her NT debut with her new play All of Us, directed by Ian Rickson. A powerful and timely drama that explores the human cost of abandoning those who struggle to fit in, the play was postponed due to Covid-19 and will now open in the Dorfman this July.  

The cast is led by Francesca Martinez alongside Chris Anderson, Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Bryan Dick, Kevin Hely, Christopher-John Slater, Francesca Mills and Wanda Opalinska. Set and costume design is by Georgia Lowe, lighting design by Anna Watson, movement direction by Lucy Cullingford. The composer is Stephen Warbeck, sound design by Gregory Clarke and fight director is Terry King. Staff Director is Hana Pascal Keegan. 

Artistic Director of the Bush Theatre, Lynette Linton makes her National Theatre debut with a new production of Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky in the Lyttelton theatre from September. This startling play set in 1930 during the Harlem renaissance, is about four friends whose lives and passions collide when a newcomer from Alabama arrives. Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange is the New Black) performs the role of Angel Allen with Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo (Three Sisters) as Delia Patterson, Osy Ikhile (Sweat) as Leland Cunningham, Sule Rimi (Barber Shop Chronicles) as Sam Thomas and Giles Terera (Death of England: Face to Face) performing the role of Guy Jacobs.  

Set and costume design by Frankie Bradshaw, lighting designer is Oli Fenwick, movement director is Kane Husbands, composer is Ben Kwasi Burrell, sound designer is George Dennis and Staff Director TD Moyo. Tickets for Blues for an Alabama Sky will go on sale in May. 

National Theatre Live 

Following the success of Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt broadcast to 40,000 people around the world on 27 January, NT Live continues with Henry V broadcast from the Donmar Warehouse on 21 April and Straight Line Crazy, a new play by David Hare, from the Bridge Theatre on 26 May.  

National Theatre Collection 

With 75% of all UK state secondary schools now signed up to the National Theatre Collection, ten additional productions will be available to schools, colleges and educational establishments from 24th February in partnership with Bloomsbury Publishing and ProQuest. These ten new productions will complete the second Collection, making a total of 50 titles available to the education sector worldwide.  

The new titles include the multi-award-winning new staging of Tony Kushner’s two-part play Angels in America starring Andrew Garfield, Nathan Lane, Denise Gough, Russell Tovey and James McArdle, award-winning one-woman play Chewing Gum Dreams written and performed by Michaela Coel and award-winning original film Romeo & Juliet directed by Simon Godwin with Jessie Buckley and Josh O’Connor as the star-crossed lovers.  

Free for UK state-funded schools and FE colleges, the NT Collection celebrates the best of British theatre and provides access to high-quality recordings of world-class productions from the NT and other leading UK theatres. The NT Collection is also available via subscription to education providers worldwide and is used in schools and colleges in 57 countries.   

West End and On Tour 

The National Theatre’s acclaimed production of The Ocean at the End of the Lane continues in London’s West End until 14 May. The first major stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s work, this fantasy novel is brought to life in an adaptation by Joel Horwood, directed by Katy Rudd.  

The internationally acclaimed production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time based on Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel, adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, continues on a 10th anniversary tour of the UK and Ireland this spring. 

International

Following an acclaimed Broadway run, The Lehman Trilogy by Stefano Massini and adapted by Ben Power, tours to the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles this spring.  Sam Mendes directs Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Howard W. Overshown who play the Lehman Brothers, their sons and grandsons. A co-production with Neal Street Productions.

A musical legacy handled with care!

The Travelling Wilburys were a super-group initiated by George Harrison in 1988. Given George’s penchant for fun (he funded Monty Python’s Life Of Brian film) it’s only fitting that the evening should start with a whole lotta fun chatting with Jayne (Jayne Connor, the show’s Manager) at the intriguing merchandise stand with an exciting Wilbury Twist: a brand new Epiphone guitar, signed by the band, being raffled. You don’t get that at every merchandise stand!

Tonight’s tribute band consists of Paul Hopkins (Roy Orbison), Mark Pearon (George Harrison), Aubrey Robinson (Bob Dylan), Red Litchfield (Jeff Lynne), Buddy Baker (Tom Petty) and Jake Perrett (Jim Keltner). Paul is a very engaging (main) front man, with an assured onstage presence and an infectious sense of humour. It’s an ensemble affair though, as the entire band are crowd pleasers. This is a genuinely funny show, with special mention going to Mark (as George) explaining what happened to Travelling Wilburys Vol 2. Hilarious! The band do a fine job of appearing like our heroes, which adds to the occasion (of course), but it’s really all about the music. And boy does it help when you have a back catalogue as rich as the original Wilbury lineup! That’s a classic show of top notch tunes covering the history of rock ‘n’ pop right there! I could single out each band member for marvellous solo moments but it’s as a collective that they shone most brightly. “I Won’t Back Down”, “Pretty Woman”, “Mr. Blue Sky”, “Blowin’ In The Wind”… as you can see the instrumentation needed for such an eclectic set list is extremely varied. Luckily the band have plenty of talent, which hit its peak perfection (for me) on “Here Comes The Sun” with the stunning backing parts sumptuously recreated on keyboards! Fun facts about the songs and band are interspersed throughout by the musicians as well as on the big screen behind them. Audience participation is greatly encouraged too and with everyone having such a fab time we didn’t need much persuading!

The introduction of Jayne showed she was a natural on the stage as well as off! She even managed to make not winning the guitar enjoyable. I’ll buy more raffle tickets next time… This was a real feel good night out with talented musicians engrossed in the music of the band they’re paying homage to. In fact that’s one of the biggest things I took away from the show – it was a total celebration of these great artists and their music. I’m sure the original Wilburys would be thrilled to know that their legacy is being handled with care. From the evidence of tonight’s performance this new incarnation has certainly not come to the end of the line! I will definitely catch their show next time they are in town and I unreservedly recommend you do the same. I’m sure you will love them just as much as I did tonight.
