Waitress Review

Sunderland Empire – until 30 September 2021

5*****

Every so often you see a show that really speaks to you, almost giving you an epiphany.  Waitress is such a show.

Beautifully written by Jessie Nelson with stunning music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles and sensitively directed by Diana Paulus, it was billed as the first Broadway musical with an all-female creative team and this is a show that is a tribute to female solidarity.

Lucie Jones plays Jenna, a waitress in a diner.  Trapped in an abusive marriage, like her mother before her.  FInding herself stuck with a pregnancy and husband, of which she wants neither.  But with no way of escape for her either.  Every day she freshly bakes 27 pies for the diner and it’s in this baking that her mind manages to escape when she physically can’t.

Unusually Waitress is a moving musical full of flawed, morally compromised characters.  Jenna begins an affair with her married obstetrician Dr Pomatter (Matt Jay-Willis).  Her fellow waitresses have hard times too.  Becky (Sandra Marvin) has a husband who is very ill meaning she is now more of a carer than a wife and lover, begins an affair with diner chef Cal (Christopher D Hunt) who’s wife he suspects is gay.  Dawn (Evie Hoskins) is timid but looking for love, adorably geeky she finds love with uber geek Ogie (George Crawford)  and they cement their love in their reenactment clothing.  Dawn has playedBetsy Ross in 43 different reenactments after all.  Jenna’s husband Earl (Donal Brennan covering the absent Tamlyn Henderson) is menacing, taking all her tips and living off her wages after losing his job.  He’s pleased about the baby because it proves his manhood but so insecure he makes Jenna promise not to love the baby more than him.

Bareilles’ lyrics are full of melody and feeling, from poppy to ballad, with the show stopping She Used to be Mine stopping the show for a good five minutes while Jones basked in a much deserved applause.  And if this was a show that spoke to me then She Used to be Mine really did sing to me.  I still have these lyrics in my head over 12 hours later.  For me this wasn’t so much a show but a life lesson

A special mention must go out to the band who were on stage (but not always seen) all night.  Ellen Campbell, Denise Crowley, Oliver Copeland, Alex Crawford and Rowland Palmer brought the melodies to life. Scott Pasks’s set and Suttrat Anne Larlarb’s costumes bring authenticity to the diner, typical of one seen on film and TV, or visited on American holidays.

Thankfully there is a happy ending, a beautiful baby is born, the affair ends and a way out is produced for Jenna to escape.  Sugar, butter and flour might make the perfect pie, but Waitress makes the perfect musical

ETT ANNOUNCES SECOND YEAR OF FLAGSHIP PLAYWRIGHT DEVELOPMENT SCHEME – NATIONWIDE VOICES

ETT ANNOUNCES SECOND YEAR OF

FLAGSHIP PLAYWRIGHT DEVELOPMENT SCHEME –

NATIONWIDE VOICES

ETT (English Touring Theatre)today announces the second year of its flagship playwriting programme Nationwide Voices in collaboration with five new partner theatres and companies. The year-long development programme aims to nurture and amplify a cadre of five exciting new voices, helping to bring their work onto mid-scale stages across Britain.

Year two of Nationwide Voices is led by ETT in collaboration with Bristol Old VicGraeae, Nottingham PlayhouseOctagon Theatre Bolton and Theatre Royal Plymouth, with venues and companies offering an attachment for their chosen playwright, who each have a meaningful connection to the local area. This year the playwrights are Amy Bethan Evans (Bristol Old Vic), Lettie Precious (Graeae), Naomi Obeng (Nottingham Playhouse), Hannah Wilkin (Octagon Theatre Bolton) and Mich Sanderson (Theatre Royal Plymouth).

Nationwide Voices exists to connect writers with mid-scale theatres and companies to help them break through onto main stages, while also facilitating theatres and companies nationwide in platforming fresh and imaginative voices. These five talented writers will develop their craft and expand their practice to the mid-scale through regular workshop sessions led by award-winning playwright and Artistic Director of tiata fahodzi, Chinonyerem Odimba. Throughout the course of the programme, each writer will develop a play of imaginative ambition and scale, with opportunities to develop their pieces with and for local communities. These plays will then be shared spring 2022 in a festival of rehearsed readings, with ETT and partners working towards further commissioning, co-producing, and touring the plays in the future.

Nationwide Voices is made possible by funding from the John Ellerman Foundation with additional support from the D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust.

Artistic Director and Executive Producer of ETT, Richard Twyman and Sophie Scull today said: “Nationwide Voices sits at the heart of ETT’s mission and our efforts to foster exciting new talent nationwide; to reflect the diversity of our nation in the work we develop and the artists we collaborate with; to make work that resonates with a wide range of audiences, that  is both creatively empowering and financially accessible; and to work with playwrights who are pushing the boundaries of form and content to platform their voices on mid-scale stages.

We are excited to be working with five excellent partners who are cultural leaders making fantastic work across England – Bristol Old Vic, Graeae, Nottingham Playhouse, Octagon Theatre Bolton, and Theatre Royal Plymouth. The five playwrights, Amy, Lettie, Naomi, Hannah and Mich are all outstanding, deeply imaginative talents, and we are lucky to work with them – and with the brilliant Chinonyerem Odimba, whose guidance and insight will be a vital part of the programme. We look forward to supporting them to make work that resonates nationwide. We are grateful to the John Ellerman Foundation for making this programme possible, and for the D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust for their additional support.”

Lead facilitator and Artistic Director of tiata fahodzi Chinonyerem Odimba added, “I’m truly thrilled to be working with ETT and partner theatres to support this group of writers over the next few months. This kind of space and workshop time is invaluable to me as a writer, and I hope I can give some of that back. Excited to get started!

from the original novels by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont

Friday 26 November 2021 – Saturday 29 January 2022

New Vic Theatre, Newcastle-under-Lyme

CASTING ANNOUNCED FOR NEW VIC’S SPECTACULAR RETELLING OF ORIGINAL BEAUTY AND THE BEAST STORY

This Christmas, the New Vic Theatre takes the classic story of Beauty and the Beast back to its roots, for a magical retelling of the much-loved classic, from Friday 26 November 2021 to Saturday 29 January 2022.

Directed by New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins (The 39 Steps; Olivier Award-winning The Worst WitchThe Snow Queen, UK Theatre Award Best Show for Children and Young People) this production will bring together the creative team behind previous New Vic shows The Prince and the PauperThe Borrowers and Treasure Island. Following in the tradition of the New Vic’s hugely successful festive productions, this adaptation of Beauty and The Beast has sought inspiration from the original versions of the tale to retell this magical story in the New Vic’s unique style.

Creating the characters on stage are a talented company of actors, featuring faces new and familiar to the theatre-in-the-round, including Rhyanna Alexander-Davis (Mischief Movie Night In, Mischief Theatre; The Visit, National Theatre) as Nigella; Bella Band (Young Dracula, So Awkward, CBBC) as Mechanical/Ensemble; Danielle Bird (The Worst Witch, Vaudeville Theatre, West End; The Prince and the Pauper, Astley’s Astounding Adventures, New Vic Theatre) as Goblin Queen; Jonathan Charles (Peter Pan in Scarlet, Robin Hood and Marian, The Borrowers, New Vic Theatre) as Wheeliam; Lucinda Freeburn (As You Like It, Beacon Hill Cottage) as Mechanical/Musician/Ensemble; Polly Lister (The Worst Witch, Vaudeville Theatre, West End; The Snow Queen, 101 Dalmatians, New Vic Theatre) as Warrior Queen; Frederik Pahus making his professional debut as Mechanical; Nicholas Richardson (Astley’s Astounding Adventures, New Vic; Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Hulu) as the Beast; Solaya Sang (Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens, TriBeCa Manchester) as Prunella; and Rhiannon Skerritt (Stranger Things, Secret Cinema; Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Box Clever) as Bella.

Artistic Director Theresa Heskins said: “Bringing new life to these classic stories is absolutely what we’re about at the New Vic.  I enjoyed discovering the original version of Beauty and the Beast to create this new version for our in-the-round stage. It’s a story about kindness; about love; about not judging people based on outward appearances: themes that feel apt for this time. And it’s about magic, which is exciting to me as a director.”

Sh!t-faced Showtime present: A Pissedmas Carol

Sh!t-faced Showtime present:

A Pissedmas Carol

2019’s Christmas hit returns bigger and better to lift our spirits in 2021

Leicester Square Theatre, 6 Dec 2021 — 15 Jan 2022

“It’s the anarchic R-rated panto I never thought I needed” **** Metro

Twitter @shitfacedshow | Insta @shitfacedshowtime | #shitfacedshowtime

Combining cast members from Sh!t-faced Showtime and Sh!t-faced ShakespeareA Pissedmas Carol is the all singing, all boozing alternative Christmas knees-up we all so desperately needed after the last year and a half of Zoom calls, Tiger King and bloody banana bread. Miserly Scrooge and his classic coterie of employees, relatives and ghosts travel through time having the night of his life – but will Scrooge be merry before the end? Or will it be the spirits that have had too many spirits? With one genuinely drunk cast member in every performance, A Pissedmas Carol is the ultimate “You’ll never guess what happened to me last night” story – despite having heard it all these last 2 years!

So how does it work? Each performance has a cast of actors who all arrive 4 hours before the start of the show for a ‘party’ – however this particular Christmas work social is dry for all but one performer, who gets, yes, you’re starting to catch on – Sh!t-faced. The rest is a delicate tight rope between performing songs and reciting Dickens all within the parameters of our strict improvisation rules, which are stated as thus: Go with WHATEVER the drunk actor decides to do. Unless it’s illegal. But even that’s a grey area we prefer to let our lawyers wade through.    Every single show is a one-off. Every single performance has a different drunk actor. Every single time they are genuinely inebriated.

Sh!tfaced Shakespeare was launched in 2010, by a bunch of idiots who loved creating chaos at music festivals such as Secret Garden Party and Glastonbury. Sh!tfaced Showtime joined the Sh!tfaced family in 2015 and have previously presented Oliver with a Twist and Alice through the Looking Glass. Sh!t-faced Shakespeare and Showtime have performed all across the UK, USA and Australia and regularly sell-out the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringes.

Producer and performer James Murfitt said “We know you all missed not having Tiny Tim’s not-so-tiny endowment and Scrooge’s expletive laden tirade on the working class bandied about the Christmas table last year, so we’ve decided to charitably stuff an extended 90 minute show with all new songs, scenes, dance sequences and even an extra trick or two into your stockings this year! Don’t say we’re Scrooge’s this Christmas! Bar, Rum, Glug!

Running Time: 90 minutes | Suitable for ages 16+ (may contain nudity and strong language)

The National Theatre has today released studio recordings of three songs and confirmed the full cast for its upcoming new musical Hex, a vividly original retelling of Sleeping Beauty that will open in the Olivier theatre for previews on 4 December.

Hex goes beyond the kiss that woke the Sleeping Beauty and tells the story from the fairy’s perspective as she tries everything in her power to make things right after placing the hex on the baby. Rosalie Craig plays the fairy in this mythic, big-hearted new musical.

The three songs released today are ProblySixteen and In the Middle:

  • Probly is sung by Fairy (Rosalie Craig). After Fairy has been invited to the Palace to bless the new baby, Rose, she questions whether she should go or whether she will be forever on the outside.
  • Sixteen is sung by Rose (Kat Ronney). On the eve of her 16th birthday our soon-to-be sleeping beauty dreams of breaking free from her over-protective parents and the confines of her palace life.
  • In The Middle is sung by Fairy (Rosalie Craig) and Queenie (Tamsin Carroll). After the birth of Bert, the Prince, Fairy tries to teach Queenie to trust her maternal rather than her ogre instincts, and to feed the baby.
  • Songs From Hex – The Studio Sessions will be released by Broadway Records and available on all major digital music retailers from today.

The cast is led by Tamsin Carroll as Queenie, Rosalie Craig as Fairy, Michael Elcock as Bert and Kat Ronney as Rose, alongside Christopher Akrill, Delroy Atkinson, Esme Bacalla-Hayes, Madeline Charlemagne, Ebony Clarke, Sonya Cullingford, Hanna Dimtsu, Tamsin Dowsett, Joe Foster, Ben Goffe, Eleanor Kane, Daisy Maywood, Kody Mortimer, Joseph Prouse, Shaq Taylor and Sargon Yelda.

Rufus Norris directs with music by Jim Fortune, book by Tanya Ronder, lyrics by Rufus Norris, designs by Katrina Lindsay and choreography by Jade Hackett.

Orchestrations by Simon Hale, music supervision by Marc Tritschler, music direction by Tarek Merchant, lighting design by Paul Anderson, choreography by Jade Hackett with consultant choreography by Bill Deamer, sound design by Simon Baker and video design by Ash Woodward.

Probly, Sixteen and In The Middle were recorded at Konk Studios in September 2021, performed by Rosalie Craig, Kat Ronney and Tamsin Carroll (vocals), Marc Tritschler (piano), Nick Pynn (mandocello, guitar), Joley Cragg (drums) and Flo Moore (bass). Recorded by Julian Simmons and Matt Jaggar with Assistant Engineer Andy Whyte.

Hex begins performances in the Olivier theatre on Saturday 4 December. It is recommended for ages 8+

Supported by the Garfield Weston Foundation through the Weston Culture Fund. The reopening of the Olivier theatre is generously supported by Areté Foundation / Betsy & Ed Cohen.
