QUEEN MAB

By Danielle Pearson

Directed by Georgie Straight; Designed by Isobel Nicolson

21 – 26 June 2021

Mab is an ancient being who doles out dreams and nightmares to her sleeping victims. She has watched humans for centuries, knows our worst fears and wildest fantasies – and quite frankly, she’s bored of us. That is until a chance meeting with Freya Roberts, a locked-down teen watching her best years slip away. As Mab and Freya strike up an unlikely friendship, the faerie is reluctantly drawn into the laughter, squabbles, triumphs and anxieties of the Roberts’ family. But when grief threatens their world, can Mab maintain her impartial role of observer?

Inspired by Mercutio’s famous speech in Romeo and JulietQueen Mab brings this mythic dream-weaver into the mundanity of pandemic life. A coming-of-age tale for fifteen-year-olds and five-hundred-year-olds alike. Through music and storytelling, Queen Mab examines the euphoria, confusion and loneliness of youth.

  • THE ON-DEMAND DIGITAL RUN WILL BE AVAILABLE FROM 15 APRIL – 9 MAY 2021

Due to popular demand, the Barn Theatre have today announced that the world debut production of the British song cycle Now or Never will return for a three week on-demand digital run from 15 April – 9 May 2021.

This song cycle, which first debuted as a livestream from the Barn Theatre on the 1st April, marked the first collaboration between The Barn Theatre and associate artist Matthew Harvey. Harvey created the song cycle with the intention of writing about individual responses to global adversity without writing specifically about the pandemic.

The piece features 7 songs with relatable everyday characters as they each take a defiant act of positivity in the face of adversity on what might be their last week on Earth.

The ambitious digital spin presents the work as a non-stop, one-shot, song cycle, with one camera navigating the entire building, featuring 7 characters moving between 7 spaces.

Tickets for the on-demand run are priced at £5 and can be purchased at barntheatre.org.uk/barn-at-home from 7pm BST on 15th April 2021. Once purchased the customer will gain one-hour access to the production.

The cast of Now or Never is Eloise Davies (Be More Chill, Grease), Ahmed Hamad (Rent, Stay Awake Jake, The Boy in the Dress), Matthew Harvey (Les Misérables, Violet, Jesus Christ Superstar, Murder Ballad), Irvine Iqbal (The Boy in the Dress, Aladdin, Broken Wings), Lucy St Louis (Man of La Mancha, Motown, Beautiful), Katie Shearman (The Sound of Music UK Tour, Evita) and Courtney Stapleton (Dear Evan Hansen, Six, Les Misérables). The production also features a cameo performance from Olivier Award winner Janie Dee (FolliesCarousel).

Matthew Harvey created the concept and wrote the song cycle. Freddie Tapner is Musical Supervisor and Ryan Carter is Creative Director, who is responsible for the innovative digital approach. Ben Collins as Director of Photography, supported by Ben Thomas & Alex Tabrizi. Harry Smith as Sound Designer.

Matthew Harvey said of the extension, “I’m absolutely delighted Now or Never is making a return! Mostly because it means I can actually watch it. I think what Ryan & The Barn have made happen is nothing short of remarkable; having shown up with only a guitar and a hard drive full of songs I had no idea just how far the team would push the bounds of digital theatre. I can’t wait for people to see what this amazing team and incredibly special cast have created.”.

Creative Director Ryan Carter said, “This whole project is the epitome of how theatres should approach digital theatre post-pandemic. An ambitious digital approach that emulates the live theatre experience as much as possible, broadcast live, and is now being streamed for an on demand run due to popular demand. Matthew Harvey has done such an incredible job writing this piece, This video-on-demand run is just the next step in what is undoubtedly an exciting future for the work”.

The shutters of the Phoenix Theatre in London will lift on 22 July and welcome in audiences to the highly anticipated re-opening of international hit musical Come From Away.

Winner of every major Best Musical award when it opened in the West End in March 2019, Come From Away tells the remarkable and inspiring true story of 7,000 stranded air passengers during the wake of 9/11, and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but as uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.

Twenty years ago on 11 September 2001, the world stopped. On 12 September and in the years following, their stories of kindness, generosity and love have moved us all.

The international hit musical has celebrated sold-out, record-breaking engagements on Broadway, in Canada, throughout Australia, and on a 60-city North American Tour.

Producers of Come From Away, John Brant and Joseph Smith, say: It’s been too long since we were able to welcome people to ‘The Rock’ and we’ve really missed our audiences.  The resilience and kindness of Newfoundlanders is known the world over and constantly provides inspiration to us all in these challenging times. Theatre is integral to the vibrancy of the UK’s creative sector and we look forward to being part of welcoming people back to London’s West End.   It’s now more than ever that we want to tell our story and give audiences the chance to see us live again.

Come From Away stars Jenna Boyd (Beulah and others), James Doherty (Claude and others), Mary Doherty (Bonnie and others), Mark Dugdale (Kevin T/Garth and others), Alice Fearn (Beverley/Annette and others), Kate Graham (Diane and others), Alasdair Harvey (Nick/Doug and others), Jonathan Andrew Hume (Kevin J/Ali and others), Harry Morrison (Oz and others), Emma Salvo (Janice and others), and Cat Simmons (Hannah and others), with Ricardo Castro, Stuart Hickey, Sorelle Marsh, Alexander McMorran, Micha Richardson, Jennifer Tierney and Matthew Whennell-Clark.

Originally Produced by
GENE WOLSK

When most of us think of the 1950s, we think of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Hot Rods, Elvis, D.A. haircuts and teenage rebellion. But there was a ‘flipside’ to this era – the side of harmony, innocence and the sincerity of dreams – when American families gathered in front of the TV to watch their favourite programmes, like Ed Sullivan or the Perry Como Show. It was a period when vocal groups harmonised their way across the airwaves and jukeboxes of the USA

Francis, Jinx, Smudge and Sparky loved to sing. They all met in high school around 1956, and, as Forever Plaid, dreamed of becoming like their idols – The Four Aces and The Crew Cuts. They rehearsed in the basement of Smudge’s family’s plumbing supply company. It was here they became FOREVER PLAID.

CURVE TO RE-RELEASE SUNSET BOULEVARD AT HOME – IN SUPPORT OF THE ANDY NAIRN BURSARIES IN TECHNICAL THEATRE 10 – 15 MAY

CURVE TO RE-RELEASE FIVE-STAR PRODUCTION OF SUNSET BOULEVARD – AT HOME

All proceeds to be donated to The Andy Nairn Bursaries in Technical Theatre

The critically acclaimed Made at Curve streamed production of Sunset Boulevard – at Home will once again be available to view online from Mon 10 to Sat 15 May, and all money raised will benefit The Andy Nairn Bursaries in Technical Theatre.

Hailed as a ‘game changer’ by The Telegraph, Curve’s streamed production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical reunited company members from the award-winning 2017 Made at Curve touring production. The show ran 22 December 2020 to 17 January 2021 and was seen by almost 15,000 people across 45 countries.

Sunset Boulevard – at Home was the last show Curve’s Head of Production Andy Nairn worked on before he sadly passed away on 26 November 2020. All money raised from ticket sales and donations for the upcoming week-long run of the musicalwill go towards The Andy Nairn Bursaries in Technical Theatre, which was set-up by Curve, Derby Theatre and Nottingham Playhouse in honour of Andy’s contribution to theatre in the region. The scheme will provide accessible training opportunities for aspiring theatre technicians from challenging socio-economic and diverse backgrounds.

Curve’s Chief Executive Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster said:

“We were truly blown away by the incredible response to our production of Sunset Boulevard, a testament to the incredible freelance artists, technical teams and musicians who made it all possible. And we are thrilled the gates of Paramount will open once again before we start to emerge from lockdown. What makes this screening even more special is that when you buy a ticket, you will be supporting The Andy Nairn Bursaries in Technical Theatre, named in honour of Andy Nairn, our much missed Head of Production, who passed away last November aged just 34 years old.

“Andy wasn’t only an exceptionally talented and respected technician and production manager, but he was an incredible leader and mentor for those starting out. He was deeply passionate about training the technicians of tomorrow, encouraging people from all backgrounds to embark on a career in theatre. All money raised from these screenings will support the bursary programme at Curve, meaning many young technicians will be able to benefit from accessible training in our state-of-the-art theatre..

“Our thanks and enormous gratitude to The Really Useful Group, Paramount Pictures, UK Theatre, the Musicians Union, sponsors PPL, Arts Council England, Leicester City Council and the DCMS’ Culture Recovery Fund which has enabled us to produce this show.”

Andy, who was born on 11 June 1986, is survived by his wife Anne Nairn and three daughters. Anne commented:

I find it incredibly heart-warming and humbling knowing that Andy’s name will live on forever in the world of theatre.

“Anyone that knew Andy, knows that as well as an immeasurable love for his family and friends, he also loved theatre and was particularly passionate about giving opportunities to young people. To know that the three theatres in the East Midlands, where Andy loved working, are coming together to enrich the lives of young people, who otherwise might not have had the chance to experience theatre, as Andy did, would make him so proud.

“My immense gratitude goes to Curve and Andrew Lloyd Webber, for showing such grace and compassion, in supporting the Andy Nairn Bursaries in Technical Theatre.”

An Orange Tree Theatre and Actors Touring Company co-production

RICE
by Michele Lee

Directed by Matthew Xia

OT On Screen: 4-5 November, 7.30pm

Nisha is a young hotshot executive working for Golden Fields, Australia’s largest producer of rice. Ambitious and headstrong, she’s determined to become the first female Indian CEO in Australia. She’s close to sealing a contract with the Indian government, which would see her company take over India’s national rice distribution system. A secret deal worth billions.

Working late nights in the office she encounters Yvette, an older Chinese migrant, who cleans up her mess. Yvette has her own entrepreneurial ambitions, but her daughter faces court after participating in a protest against the unethical practices of a national supermarket chain.

The two form a powerful – if unlikely – bond as they navigate the complexities of their lives and the world at large.

Brimming with wickedly humorous observations on globalisation, politics and family, this is the UK premiere of a powerful new play from Asian-Australian writer Michele Lee, which has won numerous awards including the Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Best Original Stage Play.

Michele Lee is an Asian-Australian writer working across television, film, stage, books, audio and live art. Her other theatre credits include Security (finalist for 2021 Patrick White Award), Single LadiesGoing Down (shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, the Nick Enright Prize, an Australian Writer’s Guild Award and five Green Room Awards), An Assistant’s Notes for a PandemicThe Naked Self, and Off Centre. This is the third collaboration between the Orange Tree Theatre and Actors Touring Company, following Amsterdam by Maya Arad Yasur and Winter Solstice by Roland Schimmelpfennig, both of which also toured the UK.

Artistic Director of Actors Touring Company Matthew Xia returns to the Orange Tree Theatre to direct Rice – he previously directed Amsterdam (ATC co-production) and Blood Knot at the OT. But a Free French lieutenant also has eyes for her… And to complicate matters, Bobby’s future father-in-law turns up too. London in the Blitz, and identities get confused: time to make hay…

This first major London revival of Rattigan’s delectably charming comedy in decades had an acclaimed sold-out run in 2019. It was the writer’s greatest hit playing for over 1,000 performances in the West End when it opened in 1943.
