In a unique collaboration and for the very first time, this spectacular reimagined staging of THE CAR MAN will utilise the expanse of the stunning Royal Albert Hall with a cast of 33 dancers, a 25-piece live orchestra and an epic new design by Olivier and Tony award-winner Lez Brotherston.

This is one of modern dance’s most thrilling shows, and to see it specially adapted to the scale and grandeur of this spectacular space promises to be an unforgettable experience.”

Matthew Bourne said today “The Car Man may have found its perfect setting in the epic and spectacular surroundings of Britain’s favourite venue, the Royal Albert Hall. This unique and iconic landmark will only heighten the visceral thrill and emotional highs of a piece already regarded as a classic favourite in the New Adventures repertoire. As a lifelong lover and supporter of the Royal Albert Hall, I am delighted to be a part of its 150th birthday celebrations! it is a real career highlight for me to present my work here for the first time and create what will no doubt be, an important moment in New Adventures history. Based on Bizet’s beloved Carmen, the familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America where the dreams and passions of a small town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.

Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling combines with one of the most thrilling and passionately dramatic scores ever written, featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen), and new arrangements of Bizet’s legendary score, by New Adventures Associate Artist, Terry Davies.

Car Man group shot on stage

THE CAR MAN was first seen in 2000, winning the Evening Standard Award for Musical Event of the Year and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for Best Choreography.

THE CAR MAN is directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne, with music by Terry Davies & Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen); designed by Lez Brotherston with lighting by Chris Davey and sound by Paul Groothuis.

UPDATE FROM CURVE REGARDING TIER 3 PLANS – SUNSET BOULEVARD IN CONCERT TO BE STREAMED ONLINE 22 DEC – 9 JAN

UPDATES FROM CURVE REGARDING TIER 3 PLANS

SUNSET BOULEVARD IN CONCERT TO BE STREAMED ONLINE
22 DEC – 9 JAN

Curve Theatre – Leicester – Backstage

Following the recent Government announcement that Leicester went into Tier 3 measures as of yesterday, Leicester’s Curve theatre has announced the planned production of Sunset Boulevard in Concert has unfortunately been cancelled. However, in a first for Curve, the production will be performed by the company in the newly configured auditorium and filmed in HD for audiences to watch from the comfort of their own homes. Tickets for the filmed version will start from £20 and between Tuesday 22 December and Saturday 9 January, there will be up to three different performance times daily. The streamed version will be available for audiences in the UK and all territories across the world, with the exception of North America. Tickets are on sale now and can be booked via the theatre’s website or by calling the Box Office.

All current ticket holders will be contacted as soon as possible by Curve’s Box Office team, and will be eligible for either a full refund or an exchange for an ‘at home’ ticket.

Curve’s Chief Executive Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster said “Due to Leicester entering Tier 3 and the uncertainty of when we will be able to reopen, we have made the difficult decision to cancel public performances of Sunset Boulevard. We are incredibly disappointed not to welcome audiences back to Curve this Christmas, especially as we have invested significantly in measures to ensure we can operate in a Covid-safe way.

However, the show must go on and in a Curve first, we will be bringing back our terrific Sunset Boulevard company to film the production for audiences to watch from the comfort of their own homes. The concert staging will see our stalls cleared of seats to accommodate our socially distanced 16-piece orchestra and we will celebrate every corner of Curve’s astonishing in-the-round auditoria with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s magnificent score. Although we are sorry not to be able to come together in person this Christmas, we are delighted we can share this specially-created concert with audiences across our city and beyond. Our sincere thanks to Really Useful Group, Paramount Pictures, UK Theatre, the Musicians Union, our sponsors PPL and the Culture Recovery Fund for helping make this possible.

Joining the previously announced Ria Jones as Norma Desmond and Danny Mac as Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard will be a host of original company members from Curve’s award-winning 2017 touring production. Molly Lynch will reprise her role as Betty Schaefer, Adam Pearce returns as Max Von Mayerling, Dougie Carter as Artie Green and Carl Sanderson as Cecil B DeMille.

The Sunset Boulevard company will also include Benjamin ChambersOwen ChapondaJoanna GoodwinKristoffer HellströmJames MeunierGemma NaylorJoanna O’HareJessica PaulSam Peggs and Barney Wilkinson.

Set over a turbulent New Year’s Eve in 1940s Hollywood, Sunset Boulevard is a gripping tale of romance, glamour and obsession. Curve’s Artistic Director Nikolai Foster will once again direct this production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical masterpiece, which features book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton and is based on the 1950 film by Billy Wilder.

A 16-piece orchestra, supported by music licensing company PPL, will bring the musical’s score to life with musical supervision by Stephen Brooker. Set Designer Colin Richmond, Video Designer Douglas O’Connell and Choreographer Lee Proud will also rejoin the production team.

Geppetto the boatmaker tosses aside a piece of wood; it’s only good for the fire. To his amazement, a voice answers him back. Geppetto picks up the wood and begins to carve – and a small wooden boy is revealed. A puppet, which he names Pinocchio.

And that’s when the mayhem begins. Pinocchio can’t stop getting into trouble, despite the best efforts of the Blue Fairy and the Cricket to keep him on track. His intentions may be good – he truly wants to go to school like real boys and girls – but the temptation to discover the wonders of the world and make his fortune keep getting in the way.

Pinocchio encounters a host of fascinating characters, from Punch and Judy to the wily Fox and Cat and the strange Sea Monster, as he journeys to Wonderland and the world beneath the sea. But he discovers that it isn’t easy hiding the truth – especially when your nose gets longer with every lie you tell…

Anna Ledwich’s previous work at Chichester includes The Butterfly Lion (2019), Crossing Lines (2019) and Beauty and the Beast (2018).

Pinocchiowill have set design by Simon Higlett, costumes by Ryan Dawson Laight, lighting by James Whiteside, musical direction by Colin Billing, sound by Gregory Clarke and movement by Lauren Grant.

Recommended for ages 7+.

Pinocchio runs at Chichester Festival Theatre from 16 December 2020 – 2 January 2021

There will be a Polish-translated performance on Monday 21 December at 7pm and a Relaxed Performance on Sunday 27 December at 2pm.

BOUNDLESS THEATRE ANNOUNCES BOUNDLESS HAPPENINGS

BOUNDLESS THEATRE ANNOUNCES BOUNDLESS HAPPENINGS

Boundless Theatre announces Boundless Happenings; a series of theatrical, digital, and experimental online participatory events launching today, 2 December, and running until 31 January 2021.

The specially commissioned Happenings created by early career artists, include virtual escape room U R NOT ALONE, livestreamed production Realness Revolution, a journey of self-care for people of colour and of learning for allies with Our Eden and digital exhibition Log Off. These new works offer interaction, connection and community when coming together in live spaces has been restricted. All events are free to access and are available via boundlesstheatre.org.uk

Artistic Director of Boundless Theatre, Rob Drummer today said “At Boundless, we’ve been motivated by a sense of service to our artists and our audiences, most of whom are early career artists between 15-25 years old – those who have seen so much vanish as a result of the pandemic.

“For all of them, we wanted to make something happen and for that reason, we’re launching Boundless Happenings. This is our first major digital experiment that aims to create reasons for young people and artists to meet in safe spaces online, to forge new connections around performance in a positive way. Some of the content is directly influenced by the challenges young people are facing but the spirit of community is alive in all of them.”

HAPPENING 4

LOG OFF

Created by Sarah-Louise Davila

Log off social media and log into your creativity. Culminating in a digital exhibition LOG OFF, Sarah-Louise wants to encourage young adults to literally leave their phones alone and spend time that usually would be spent being on social media to create art. Intrigued? Yes? Good.

With the freedom to create whatever they want, submissions do not have to focus on the negative sides of social media; this is one for exploration and creativity.

Submission should be made between 18 – 24 January to be featured. Submissions Details at: https://happenings.boundlesstheatre.org.uk/log-off/ and on Boundless Socials @boundlessabound

Episode 4: Lacking in human interaction, Vicky is struggling. She seeks connection and as a result, demands a live audience to preview the show. With the tightest of turnarounds, the producers begin making arrangements. Invitations are distributed worldwide & the RSVP’s start pouring in. With a clash of opinions and Tom the director insisting they are not ready, musical director Chris continues to rehearse with Vicky as she vehemently prepares herself for the performance.

This heightened reality web-series, featuring a company of actual real-life creatives, is raising the stakes and bringing the challenges of rehearsing online to the forefront. The series is inspired by a love of live performance, a passion for drag and queer culture and the dilemma we all find ourselves in with Miss Rona. It offers some insight into the creative process of making a show during a pandemic, with a drag queen, across multiple time zones and explores the artistic vision, design concepts and music creation all while celebrating Vicky’s sentiment that “When the world goes to sh*t, sometimes you gotta celebrate a little harder.”

Theatre discovery platform Thespie is thrilled to announce that renowned composer Stephen Schwartz has created a special sung performance at the piano for audiences to enjoy as part of the first concert of the Reunited series— four filmed musical theatre concerts premiering throughout December.

Unlimited: The Songs of Stephen Schwartz is a celebration of his works including WickedPippinGodspellChildren of Eden, and The Prince of Egypt, Schwartz’s newest musical.  The concert will premiere on Thursday 3 December at 8pm GMT, and will be available on demand afterward for audiences around the globe.

The nine artists in the concert (Nikki Bentley, Sophie Evans, Alice Fearn, Alexia Khadime, Melanie La Barrie, Carl Man, Dianne Pilkington, Liam Tamne, Oliver Tompsett) have all starred in Wicked during its first 14 years in London, and two (Khadime, Tamne) are in the current cast of The Prince of Egypt.

Stephen Schwartz shared, “Since right now we can’t see WickedThe Prince of Egypt and other live shows, I’m grateful to Thespie for offering the Reunited series of concerts and I’m excited to have these amazing artists singing my songs in this program.”

Developed by Aimie Atkinson (Thespie’s Creative Producer and the Olivier nominated star of Pretty Woman and SIX), each Reunited concert presents ensemble music performances (filmed in COVID-secure London venues), with over 40 of the UK’s top musical theatre artists appearing in the series. The program of each concert has been developed by the artists involved and will also include intimate interview footage.

Thespie Creative Producer Aimie Atkinson commented, “This is truly an all-star cast singing a wide range of Schwartz’s repertoire, music that has meant so much to them since their school days and throughout their careers. The artists really deliver vocally and emotionally, and audiences are in for some incredibly special performances.”

The Reunited concerts are designed to inspire global theatre audiences, by bringing the UK’s best musical theatre talent directly to their homes this holiday season. The artists involved collectively represent over three centuries of experience on UK stages; their recent credits include The Prince of Egypt, Pretty Woman, SIX, Dear Evan Hansen, & Juliet, Come From Away, Wicked, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, and Kinky Boots.

The further concerts in the Reunited series are:

An Extended-Access bundle (£45/$54) gives purchasers access to all four concerts from their premiere through 31 December, and provides a 25% discount over booking the concerts separately. All concerts and the bundle can also be purchased after their premiere, with the same window of access (72 hours, 7 days, or through 31 Dec.)

The Reunited Series and Thespie’s original content initiative support its work to foster the connection between artists and audiences on its theatre discovery platform. Thespie’s first original production, The Reunion, was one of the bestselling paid theatre streaming events in the UK, selling tickets to 3600 households across 65 countries; and employed 35 live entertainment workers who received over £30k in income from the event.

Thespie founder Tyler Stoops said, “The message that Stephen Schwartz shares in Unlimited about the humanity of theatre really underscores Thespie’s mission and purpose. We’re very fortunate that he is lending his talents to this already-incredible line-up of artists.

Thespie offers listings for theatre streaming, theatre music & audio, theatre eBooks, educational resources, live London theatre, theatre news, and more.
