Neal Street Productions announces new bursary scheme

NEAL STREET PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCES NEW SCREENWRITERS BURSARY

21 September 2020

Neal Street Productions has today announced a brand-new screenwriters bursary scheme aimed at supporting and training emerging Black, Asian and ethnic minority screenwriters.

Five successful writers will each receive £20,000 to write an original screenplay, which can either be a TV pilot or a feature film script.

Run by Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, Caro Newling, and Nicolas Brown, Neal Street Productions has been successfully producing award-winning film, TV and theatre for almost 20 years. Their recent productions include the Oscar and Bafta winning 1917, and for TV, RTS winning and BAFTA nominated Informer and Call the Midwife, currently in production on its 10th series, which remains one of the highest rated returning dramas in the UK. Like others in the UK industry, Neal Street are keen to widen the pool of screenwriting talent, and in particular to nurture new, diverse voices from a Black, Asian or ethnic minority background, who are currently under-represented in the UK.

Pippa Harris said: “There is a wealth of un-tapped screenwriting talent in the UK, and we are keen to help identify and support those people to tell their stories. All writers, regardless of background deserve an equal chance to succeed, and the strength of the overall industry depends on the richness and diversity of the screenplays which get produced.”

During the writing process, each bursary recipient will receive meetings with the Neal Street Productions Development team and Company Directors as well as access to networking opportunities with established writers and commissioners. The scheme, which is supported by Neal Street Productions’ parent company All3Media, is aimed at writers who are near the start of their careers and haven’t yet had an original screenplay produced for film or TV. Neal Street Productions may work with the successful applicant/s to develop the screenplay further.

Sam Mendes said; “We hope these bursaries will provide the resources to offer a stepping stone into the industry for underrepresented voices. Applicants shouldn’t feel restricted by subject matter, but instead be encouraged to develop whatever story they feel inspired to write, in whichever medium (TV or Film) is best suited to tell it. We’re excited to discover new talent, explore new perspectives and work with our writers collaboratively to help kickstart their careers.”

reign in musical SIX, will reunite live for in-person
and at-home audiences, powered by Thespie

•           The Reunion is the first stage+streaming concert performance by seven powerhouse vocalists who rose to fame as the original West End queens of the musical SIX: Aimie Atkinson, Alexia McIntosh, Grace Mouat, Jarneia Richard-Noel, Maiya Quansah-Breed, Millie O’Connell, and Natalie Paris.

•           Streamed globally, with live performances in an intimate, COVID-secure venue (previously host to artists like Iggy Azalea and Thom Yorke) now reimagined for safe, seated shows.

•           Drawing on themes of girl power and sisterhood, The Reunion will feature songs by celebrated female pop artists and touch on the artists’ bonds, on stage and off.

•           Thespie is built and run by a team of theatre lovers with extensive tech and theatre credentials from Amazon, Disney, TodayTix, ATG, Encore Tickets, Met Opera, and more.

The Reunion brings together seven of the UK’s top vocal powerhouses for an epic evening of empowering pop music in a unique intimate venue.

Performing together for the first time since their reign as the original West End queens of the musical SIX, these women are close friends on stage and off, and have been eager to perform together again. They shared: “We are beyond thrilled and excited to be back together again with our reunion show! and with an actual LIVE audience! We cannot wait to belt out some of our favourite girl power anthems and bring our fans an epic show they will never forget!”

The Reunion stars Aimie AtkinsonAlexia McIntoshGrace MouatJarneia Richard-NoelMaiya Quansah-BreedMillie O’Connell, and Natalie Paris. Each has an Olivier Award nomination, prestigious theatrical and concert credits, and they have been featured on studio recordings, cast albums and concert livestreams spanning musical theatre and pop.

The live performances and streaming are ticketed and run by theatre platform Thespie which aims to be the most trusted way to discover theatre and the arts. Thespie launched in May as a means to keep people connected to theatre and the arts during lockdown, and now offers more than 1,500 digital streaming listings as well as audio, theatre ebooks, and educational resources, including nearly 400 productions to stream for free. Now that London live indoor theatre performances can safely resume, Thespie has expanded to develop ways to help artists resume working safely in the current conditions.

Commenting on the announcement, Thespie founder Tyler Stoops said: “These incredibly talented artists are the ideal collaborators to deliver a thrilling performance for in-person and at-home audiences simultaneously. So many people are ready to experience incredible shows again and are happy to follow robust, simple-to-follow safety measures, so we’re proud to be solving the operational challenges that can get artists working again.”

Performances will be held in Oval Space, a spacious and well-ventilated East London venue that has been entirely reimagined for safe, seated music and theatre performances. The seating plan is entirely flexible which allows seating to be customised to the audience that books. Audiences book for themselves and their household or support bubble only (to a maximum of six), and Thespie’s technology determines a seat plan that ensures safe spacing between households and optimises use of the space. Audiences receive their seating assignment and scannable digital ticket prior to the event.

Additional safety measures in place include:

•           Time indoors is minimised using ample outdoor space and the terrace bar,

•           Scannable digital tickets, with no paper tickets or box office collection,

•           Seating is by household/support bubble with appropriate distance between each,

•           Masks are required and should be worn whenever feasible,

•           Thorough cleaning of all customer areas between performances,

•           If the performance cannot proceed, purchasers will automatically be refunded.

The global livestream will take place at 9:30PM BST on Saturday, 10 October and will be available in over 100 countries, with several local currency prices available. Advance purchase of a Household Livestream Pass is £12.50 (or $15 US) if booked before 30 September. All-at-once scenes, music videos, free-standing performances, The Theatre Channel is committed to celebrate everything beautiful and magical about theatre, and we hope will inspire imaginations across the Globe.”

The Theatre Channel is produced by Adam Blanshay Productions and The Theatre Café, with direction and choreography by Bill Deamer and musical supervision by Michael England, set and costume design by Gregor Donnelly, lighting design by Jack Weir, sound design by Keegan Curran, videography by Ben Hewis and hair and makeup by Diana Hudson.

London-based Event Cinema specialist More2Screen has been appointed by Sonia Friedman Productions and Angelica Films (an All3Media company) to distribute Uncle Vanya, Ian Rickson’s highly acclaimed production of Conor McPherson’s new adaptation starring Toby Jones and Richard Armitage, to cinemas across the UK, Ireland and internationally from 27 October 2020. This special cinema event will only be available for a limited run in Autumn 2020. Tickets are on sale now at UncleVanyaCinema.com

Sonia Friedman Productions and Angelica Films are co-producing a sumptuous re-interpretation of Ian Rickson’s stage production. Marrying the intimacy of the big screen with the electricity of live performance in an exciting combination of film and theatre, this is not simply a capture of the play, but a new and exhilarating hybrid artform. The West End stage production was half-way through a sold out run when the Coronavirus pandemic forced theatres across the world to close. It has garnered huge critical and public acclaim and is currently nominated for four Olivier Awards. It ran at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 14th January 2020 with an Opening Night on Thursday 23rd January 2020.

To re-create and film for the first time a British theatre production closed by the pandemic, the production team adhered to strict COVID-19 protocols to ensure the safety of both cast and crew. This involved the actors self-isolating before shooting on location at the Harold Pinter Theatre as well as being regularly tested to allow them to perform closely together, as they did on stage in the West End theatre production.

The film reunites nearly all of the original cast of the production that was in its final weeks when the country went into lockdown in March and theatres were forced to close. Only Ciarán Hinds was unavailable and his role has now been taken by Roger Allam who is best known for playing Peter Mannion MP in The Thick of It (A NumberEndeavourThe Moderate Soprano).

Sonia Friedman and Sally Angel (Angelica Films) said: “It is fantastic to be partnering with More2Screen on this project. Their strong track record in bringing event films to UK cinemas will ensure that this extraordinary re-interpretation of Ian Rickson’s acclaimed stage production of Uncle Vanya will be seen by as many people as possible.”

Toby Jones (The Detectorists, The Birthday Party, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Richard Armitage (The HobbitThe Stranger), Rosalind Eleazar (The Personal History of David Copperfield, Deep Water, The Starry Messenger), Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education, Downstate), Anna Calder-Marshall (LOVE, Evening at the Talk House, Male of the Species), Dearbhla Molloy (The Ferryman, Dancing at Lughnasa, Juno and the Paycock), Peter Wight (The Birthday Party, Hamlet, The Red Lion) and Roger Allam (A Number, EndeavourThe Moderate Soprano, The Thick of It), all star in McPherson’s witty and timely adaptation of Chekhov’s classic which is directed for screen by Ross MacGibbon.

Sonya (Aimee Lou Wood) and her Uncle Vanya (Toby Jones) while away their time on an isolated estate, visited occasionally only by the local doctor Astrov (Richard Armitage). However, when Sonya’s father Professor Serebryakov (Roger Allam) suddenly returns with his restless, alluring, new wife Yelena (Rosalind Eleazar), polite facades crumble and long repressed feelings start to emerge. As the conflicted family are forced to confront their despair, loneliness and each other, can the beauty of life help them find new hope?

Olivier Award-winner Conor McPherson’s stunning new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece, Uncle Vanya, is a portrayal of life at the turn of the 20th century, full of tumultuous frustration, dark humour and hidden passions.

Uncle Vanya is the eleventh collaboration between Ian Rickson and Sonia Friedman Productions, with previous productions including RosmersholmJerusalemThe RiverBetrayal and The Children’s Hour.

The stage production of Uncle Vanya was designed by Rae Smith, with lighting by Bruno Poet, music by Stephen Warbeck, sound by Ian Dickinson and casting by Amy Ball CDG.

The original production was presented by Sonia Friedman ProductionsGavin Kalin ProductionsRupert Gavin, Patrick Gracey/Scott M. Delman1001 Nights ProductionsTulchin Bartner Productions in association with Len BlavatnikEilene Davidson ProductionsLouise & Brad Edgerton.

BBFC is to be confirmed and the running time is 150 minutes approximately.

The Barricade Boys Review

Turbine Theatre – Summer Showtime on the Coaling Jetty – 18th September 2020

Reviewed by Claire Roderick

5*****

Released from lockdown and bouncing around the stage like excited puppies, the Barricade Boys’ night on the Coaling Jetty showed what we have been missing these past months. There has been lots of stunning and creative online content, but the buzz and joy of coming together for a live performance is unbeatable, even in the freezing wind! I’m still not sure who was the most excited – the audience or the boys!

Simon Schofield, Keiron Brown, Scott Garnham and Lee Honey-Jones are as slick as ever singing Les Mis favourites, upping the tempo with Blues Brothers, Motown and Frankie Valli medleys, as well as a gorgeous West Side Story section. Apparently there were sound issues, so they couldn’t hear themselves, and it was COLD, but the voices and harmonies were just amazing, and their version of Bohemian Rhapsody was as stunning as it is indoors.

The easy shtick between, and often during, numbers is , as ever, a joy – and after Keiron Brown’s moving rendition of Music of the Night, the toes came off and the goofing around was ramped up for a wonderful Uptown Funk disco mashup. By the time they got to the Beatles, the audience were up and dancing.

A fantastic, fun show, and a wonderful celebration of the return of live performances – and made even better by the tip to keep an eye on The Barricade Boys’ socials for dates for their socially distanced tour as they take their cracking Christmas Cabaret on the road later this year!
