The King’s Head Theatre, Making Productions and RGM Productions are delighted to announce the full cast for the West End transfer of Kevin Elyot’s Coming Clean.

Tony will be played by Lee Knight. His theatre credits include A Very Very Very Dark Matter (The Bridge Theatre), Adam & Eve (Hope Theatre) and Much Ado About Nothing (Wyndhams Theatre, West End). Film credits include Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, The Spiritualist, Away With Me,Misrule, and The Doorman.

Stanton Plummer-Cambridge will play Greg. He has recently appeared in Macbeth, The Tempest(Southwark Playhouse), Queers (King’s Head Theatre), Richard III, Much Ado About Nothing(Handlebards Summer Tour), and As You Like It (Shakespeare in the Squares). His television credits include Black Earth Rising and The Durrells.

Tom Lambert makes his West End debut in the role of Robert. Tom graduated from Drama Centre London in 2018, and previously studied at Oxford University. He performed in Life According to Saki(Edinburgh Fringe 2016), which won the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award, and subsequently transferred Off-Broadway to New York City.

Elliot Hadley will play the role of William/Jurgen. He was an original cast member of the award-winning verbatim drama 5 Guys Chillin’ and, after touring with it nationally and internationally (New York’s Soho Playhouse), won the Micheál Mac Liammóir Award for Best Male Performance.  Previous performing credits include Alfred Cummins in the BBC’s Preston Passion, Dark Matters for Discovery Channel USA, Thomas Kyd in The Dead Shepherd, ITV’s The Halcyon, and Far From The Madding Crowd with Michael Sheen and Carey Mulligan.

Adam Spreadbury-Maher, Artistic Director of the King’s Head Theatre, will direct the production, which will run at Trafalgar Studios 2 from 9 January to 2 February 2019, with a national press night on Friday 11 January 2019.

In 2017, Adam Spreadbury-Maher directed the 35^th anniversary production and the first London revival of Coming Clean, Kevin Elyot’s first play.  The play premiered at the Bush Theatre on 3 November 1982. Coming Clean looks at the breakdown of a gay couple’s relationship and examines complex questions of fidelity and love.

The play is set in a flat in Kentish Town, north London, in 1982.  Struggling writer Tony and his partner of five years, Greg, seem to have the perfect relationship.  Committed and in love, they are both open to one-night stands as long as they don’t impinge on the relationship.  But Tony is starting to yearn for something deeper, something more like monogamy.  When he finds out that Greg has been having a full-blown affair with their cleaner, Robert, their differing attitudes towards love and commitment become clear.

In his foreword to Kevin Elyot: Four Plays (Nick Hern Books, 2004), Elyot writes, “From 1976 to 1984 I’d acted in several productions at the Bush Theatre, and Simon Stokes, one of the artistic directors, had casually suggested I try my hand at a play.  I presented them with a script entitled Cosy, which was passed on to their literary manager Sebastian Born.  He responded favourably and, largely through his support, it finally opened on 3 November 1982 under the [new] title Coming Clean.”

Written 12 years before his most famous play, My Night With Reg, Coming Clean won Elyot the Samuel Beckett Award for writers showing particular promise in the field of the performing arts.

Theatre critic Michael Coveney wrote of Elyot in his obituary for The Guardian in 2014, “In writing about the human heart and the art of living… Elyot transcended categorisation and produced a small body of stage plays that will reward revival, and not just as period pieces.”  Coveney goes on to describe Coming Clean as “an elegiac play about sexual relationships at a time when Aids was still a barely credible rumour in Britain, but there was a sense of foreboding in the final scene.” 

Director Adam Spreadbury-Maher (recent King’s Head Theatre productions include the European premiere of Tommy Murphy’s Strangers in Between, La bohème and Trainspotting) will be joined by set designer Amanda Mascarenhas (For Reasons That Remain Unclear and La Traviata for the King’s Head Theatre) and lighting designer Nic Farman (La Traviata, Shock Treatment, La bohème,Così fan tutte, Madam Butterfly, and F*cking Men for the King’s Head Theatre). 

Coming Clean is being produced in the West End by King’s Head Theatre, Making Productions and RGM Productions.

Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre have today announced their 2019 season. Opening the season, Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning play Our Town (16 May – 8 June) is directed by Ellen McDougall, Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre. Directed by Timothy Sheader, and continuing the 2018 collaboration which brought The Turn of the Screw to the Open Air Theatre stage, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and English National Opera present Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck (14 June – 22 June). A Midsummer Night’s Dream (28 June – 27 July) returns to the theatre for the first time in seven years in a new production directed by Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow. To conclude the season, Jamie Lloyd directs Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita (2 August – 21 September) as Jesus Christ Superstar transfers to the Barbican (4 July – 24 August).

Our Town (16 May – 8 June) celebrates what it means to be human, the bonds that hold communities together, and our relationships with the ancient past and the eternal tomorrow. The Pulitzer Prize winning play is directed by Ellen McDougall, Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre. Ellen’s credits away from the Gate include:The Wolves (Stratford East); Othello (Shakespeare’s Globe); The Remains of Maisie Duggan (Abbey Theatre, Dublin); The Glass Menagerie (Headlong); Anna Karenina (Royal Exchange Manchester) and Ivan and the Dogs (Olivier Award-nomination, Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre/Actors Touring Company/Soho).

Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and English National Opera continue their 2018 collaboration with a co-production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel (14 June – 22 June). Sung in English, members of the ENO orchestra will be conducted by Ben Glassberg, with direction by Open Air Theatre’s Artistic Director, Timothy Sheader.

Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, then directs a new production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (28 June – 27 July). Whilst at the Citizens Theatre, Dominic has won Best Director in the Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) for Oresteia, Crime and Punishment and Betrayal. He previously directed Peer Gynt at Dundee Rep (in a co-production with National Theatre of Scotland), which won four CATS and transferred to the Barbican.

 

The 2019 season concludes with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita (2 August – 21 September) directed by Jamie Lloyd. The musical premiered in the West End in 1978, and features a chart-topping score including Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, Oh! What A Circus, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, and the Academy Award-winning You Must Love Me, originally performed by Madonna in the motion picture. As Artistic Director of The Jamie Lloyd Company, Jamie is currently producing and directing Pinter at the Pinter, a season of Harold Pinter’s short plays in the West End.

 

The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar transfers to the Barbican (4 July – 24 August), ahead of a North American Tour in the autumn. Casting to be announced.

Also announced today are the full tour dates and casting for To Kill a Mockingbird, first produced by Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2013, which opens at Curve Leicester on 7 February. Produced by Jonathan Church Productions, Curve and Regent’s Park Theatre Ltd the cast is led by Simon Robson in the role of Atticus Finch. The production visits: Milton Keynes; Birmingham REP; Norwich Theatre Royal; Rose Theatre, Kingston; Newcastle Theatre Royal; King’s Theatre, Edinburgh; Malvern Theatres; The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury; Cambridge Arts Theatre; Bord Gais, Dublin; Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford; The Lowry, Salford; Eden Court Theatre, Inverness; and His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen.

The role of Scout will be shared by Summer Jenkins and Eve Prenelle; the role of Jem will be shared by Stanley Jarvis, Jaxon Knopf and Theo Josse Wilkinson; the role of Dill will be shared by Billy Marlow, Joshua Pickering and Jack Riley.

Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s Calendar Girls The Musical is a total triumph. The story follows the highs and lows of a group of W.I. members as they attempt to produce an “alternative” calendar to raise funds for the relatives’ room in Skipton Hospital in memory of their friend’s husband John Baker. This is of course loosely based around a true story and is handled with sincerity, care and masses of humour, never shying away from how difficult it is to lose a loved one to cancer and how hard for those left behind to deal with the little things in life. The story takes place in a small Yorkshire village and we move through the seasons with the villagers as life changes irrevocably for Annie (Anna-Jane Casey), and as her best friend Chris (Rebecca Storm) tries to keep her going. We also see the broader story of village life through the stories of the other members of the W.I., the husbands and the teenagers who are just trying to find their path in life.

The cast is outstanding and deliver the story with superb comic timing but also with feeling and emotion, never losing sight of the serious side of the story. Anna-Jane Casey is excellent as Annie and the whole audience felt for her as she lost her beloved John. Rebecca Storm plays Chris beautifully with just the right amount of naughtiness. I loved Karen Dunbar’s musical numbers and Christmas Carols will never be quite the same. Denise Welch and Ruth Madoc play their parts to perfection, Sara Crowe is suitable dippy as Ruth and Fern Britton adds the right amount of frostiness as Marie. The cast made all of the characters real and made you care what happened to them. I was very impressed by the young actors Tyler Dobbs as Tommo, Danny Howker as Danny and Isabel Caswell as Jenny, they had superb timing and added beautifully to the humour.

This is ultimately a musical about community, life and love and about grabbing those chances while they are there. It will drain you of emotion and you will probably cry but you will leave the theatre feeling empowered and uplifted and full of joy. It is a real celebration of life. I’m not alone in thinking this the entire audience at the Hull New Theatre was quickly on their feet to give the cast a well-deserved standing ovation. The friend I went with summed it up nicely – “That’s the best thing I’ve ever seen at Hull New Theatre”.

Katharine McPhee will make her West End debut starring as Jenna in the UK premiere of Waitress, having played the role on Broadway earlier this year. The Tony Award-nominated musical will begin preview performances on 8 February ahead of its official opening night on 7 March at London’s Adelphi Theatre. Currently playing its third year on Broadway, Waitress will bring with it an all-female lead creative team – a West End musical first.

Since finding international fame as a captivating singer on American Idol – Season 5, Katharine has become a successful recording artist, landing numerous songs and albums on Billboard’s pop, jazz, holiday and adult-contemporary charts in her native US. Her latest album of timeless American standards “I Fall In Love Too Easily” was released by BMG in 2017. As an acclaimed actress, she was the breakout star of the 2013 NBC-TV musical series Smash, Executive Produced by Steven Spielberg with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray). She recently starred in the hit CBS dramatic series Scorpion.

Waitress opened on 24 April 2016 at Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theater. Based on the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly, Waitress was the first Broadway musical in history to have four women in the four top creative team spots, with a book by Jessie Nelson, a score by six-time Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, choreography by Lorin Latarro and direction by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus. The production is currently touring the US and has also recently announced it will have its Australian premiere in 2020 at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.

Waitress tells the story of Jenna, an expert pie maker in a small town, who dreams of a way out of her loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a new life, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes to happiness. But Jenna must find the courage and strength within herself to rebuild her life. This American musical celebrates friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie.

On its Broadway opening, Waitress was nominated for four Outer Critics’ Circle Awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical; two Drama League Award Nominations, including Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Musical; six Drama Desk Nominations, including Outstanding Musical; and four Tony Award Nominations, including Best Musical.

Based on a TV show, now a theatrical tour de force, Cilla the Musical tells the tale of dear departed, national treasure Cilla Black.

Cilla (or Cyril as John Lennon lovingly calls her) dreams of singing, her parents Big Cilla (Jayne Ashley) and John (Neil McDonald) are proud of the fact she works in an office and try to dissuade her from a showbiz life.  But her friends Pat (Billie Hardy) and Pauline (Gemma Broderick) and her boyfriend Bobby Willis know she has what it takes to be a massive star.

Her big break comes when Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles hears her singing.  Her first audition for him a disaster, her second see’s her signed and on her way to Abbey Road and to the top.

Kara Lily Hayworth, who was chosen from thousands of hopefuls, is magnificent as Cilla.  Her rendition of Anyone Who Had a Heart at the end of the first act was show stoppingly beautiful.  Her growing relationship with Bobby (Alexander Patmore) which became a long and happy marriage, and her fight to be famous with Epstein (Andrew Lancel) whilst feeling second fiddle to the Beatles

There is poignancy when the Beatles sing Hide Your Love Away – in essence about John hiding his wife and son from the fans, but when Epstein sings hauntingly along you realise that he was hiding his sexuality, so not to commit an offence.

There is a strong narrative throughout, telling a true story with some wonderfully rousing music and vocals with a live band on and musicians off stage led by Scott Alder: clothes that accentuate the nostalgia, an incredible and versatile set perfectly evoking the era and a talented ensemble make for a perfect balance of song and story line.  

This is the perfect night out, whether you a fan of Cilla, of the 60’s or just of good music.   Lovingly created by her good friends Bill Kenwright and Laurie Mansfield, with input from her son Robert Willis – this is a production that has been created with a “lorra lorra” love for our Cilla

Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment and Hope Mill Theatre are delighted to announce the full cast for the London transfer of their production of Aspects of Love at Southwark Playhouse.

 

Madalena Alberto will play Giulietta Trapani, and Eleanor Jackson will join the ensemble. This completes the previously announced cast of Kelly Price (That Day We Sang, A Little Night Music – Olivier Award Nominee, 2010) in the role of Rose, Felix Mosse (The Rocky Horror Show) as Alex, Jerome Pradon (Jesus Christ Superstar, Pacific Overtures – Olivier Award Nominee, 2003) as George, Jack Churms, as Jerome/ensemble, Jason Kajdi (Our House, Assassins) as Hugo, Julia J Nagle (An American in Paris) as Elizabeth/ensemble, Minal Patel (The Secret Garden, Bend it Like Beckham) as Marcel and Eleanor Walsh as Jenny/ensemble.

 

Madalena Alberto has played some of the most coveted roles in musical theatre, including Fantine in Les Misérables (Barbican and UK tour), Grizabella in Cats (London Palladium) and the title role in Evita (Dominion Theatre, UK and International tours). Madalena is also an established solo artist and songwriter, performing regularly in concerts in London, Lisbon and Barcelona, and is a proud associate artist to Chaskis Theatre Company in London.

 

Eleanor Jackson trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Her theatre credits include Freight (RADA Festival), Medea (Bristol Old Vic), and Great Again (Vaults Festival).

 

Directed by Jonathan O’Boyle (Rain Man, Hair and Pippin) this new, intimately reimagined production will play for a limited season from 7 January to 9 February 2019, with a national press night on Thursday 10 January. This will be the fourth London transfer from Hope Mill Theatre, following Yank!, Hair and Pippin, and the award-winning 50^th anniversary production of Hair has recently announced a major UK tour in 2019. 

 

2019 marks 30 years since the original production of Aspects of Love first opened, premiering at the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1989.  With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Don Black and Charles Hart and based on the novel by David Garnett, the musical is set in France in 1947 and features the iconic songs Love Changes Everything, Seeing Is Believing and First Man You Remember. While English student Alex Dillingham is travelling through France before his call up, he falls in love with the alluring actress Rose Vibert. Rose joins Alex at his uncle’s villa. As the pair embark on a passionate affair, the unexpected arrival of Uncle George changes their lives forever. From the cobbled streets of Paris to the mountains of the Pyrenees, Aspects of Love is a heart-breaking love story spanning twenty years.

 

Aspects of Love will have musical direction by Richard Bates, choreography by Sam Spencer-Lane, design by Jason Denvir, lighting design by Aaron J Dootson, sound design by James Nicholson and casting by Jane Deitch.

 

Aspects of Love at Southwark Playhouse is produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment and Hope Mill Theatre with Jim Kierstead.

Punchdrunk is delighted to announce The Punchdrunk Encyclopaedia, the definitive book on the company’s work to date, which will be released to mark eighteen years of Punchdrunk’s existence. Written by Jo Machon along with the Punchdrunk team and published by Routledge, it will provide the first full-scale, historical account of one of the world’s foremost theatre companies, drawn from the collective memory and archives of the core creative team past and present.

Compiled in playful encyclopaedic format, just like the company’s mask shows readers are invited to make their own journey through the book, and explore the concepts and context that form the foundation of Punchdrunk’s work.

The book features writing from past collaborators and friends such as Adam Curtis, Lyn Gardner and Nicholas Hytner alongside core creatives including Felix Barrett, Stephen Dobbie, Maxine Doyle, Peter Higgin, Beatrice Minns, Colin Nightingale and Livi Vaughan. A series of exercises also offer guidance on how to delve deeper into the company’s creative approaches.

From first ever production The Tempest to Masque of the Red Death and Sleep No More, The Punchdrunk Encyclopaedia charts the company’s rise and evolution over the past eighteen years.  It is suitable for anyone with an interest in the company’s work.

NEW SITE AT BLENHEIM PALACE

[21 November] Europe’s first ever pop-up Shakespearean Theatre – SHAKESPEARE’S ROSE THEATRE – today announced its expansion for 2019 with a summer residency of 9 weeks at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. This follows last week’s announcement of a return to York, following its inaugural and highly successful season in 2018.  Both theatres will run simultaneously over summer next year, performing a total of eight Shakespeare plays.

SHAKESPEARE’S ROSE THEATRE – a 13-sided Elizabethan-style playhouse, complete with an Elizabethan village – will be constructed over a three week period in the glorious grounds of ‘Britain’s Greatest Palace’ where it will run from 8 July until 7 September, whilst in York the theatre will return to the foot of 13^th century Clifford’s Tower, where it will open on 25 June and run until 1 September.

Originator of the project and CEO of international theatre company, Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, James Cundall, said “We had such a wonderful response from our 80,000 visitors in York over the summer and an overwhelming number of requests to return – so not only are we thrilled to be coming back to York in 2019, but our expansion to the magnificent grounds of Blenheim Palace will enable us to bring this unique immersive experience of Shakespeare to an even wider audience.

 

Preparations are now in full swing for eight Shakespeare plays, four companies of actors, two theatres and two Elizabethan villages.”

The new site at Blenheim Palace will enjoy one of the finest views in England, situated within the glorious grounds, adjacent to the 18^th century palace.  Coincidentally, it will be just yards from the historic Shakespeare’s Way, which bisects the Blenheim Palace Estate.

At both the York and Blenheim Palace sites, the Shakespearean theatres will be constructed using state-of-the-art scaffolding technology, corrugated iron and timber.  Inspired by the famous London Rose Playhouse built in 1587, 12 years prior to The Globe, SHAKESPEARE’S ROSE THEATRE will house an audience of 900, with 560 seated on three tiered balconies around an open-roofed courtyard with standing room for 340 ‘groundlings’.

Both theatres will be located within a Shakespearean village, bringing an authentic Elizabethan ambience and theatricality to the event, including:

·        ‘wagon’ performances of Elizabethan-style entertainment, including comic mini-plays, speeches and mediaeval musicians

·        the best Yorkshire and Oxfordshire food and drinks, housed in oak-framed and reed-thatched buildings

·        and an Elizabethan garden, created by a leading Yorkshire garden designer, with ornate box-edged beds of vegetables, cottage flowers and herbs.

The plays have been selected from across the genres, offering something for everyone, and will be performed in repertory by two companies of actors based at each location.  The Blenheim Palace companies will be performing the repertoire of plays from the first season in York: Romeo & Juliet, Richard III, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth, while in York another four of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays will be performed: Hamlet, Henry V, The Tempest and Twelfth Night.
