NORMAN PACE TO JOIN STEVE PUNT AND CHARLIE CONDOU AS THEY SHARE THE ICONIC ROLE OF THE NARRATOR IN UK NATIONAL PRODUCTION OF THE

LEGENDARY MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA

Comedian Norman Pace will be joining the cast of the smash hit musical Rocky Horror Show next month.  He will join fellow comedian Steve Punt and Coronation Street star Charlie Condou to share the legendary role of The Narrator on the UK tour which is currently smashing box office records in venues from Brighton to Liverpool, Birmingham to Sunderland.

Following critically acclaimed performances on the tour earlier this year, Steve Punt will reprise the role in Cardiff, Sunderland, Southampton, Wimbledon, York, Aylesbury, Nottingham, Richmond, Malvern and Stoke. In Bradford – back by popular demand – following his hilarious performance in Manchester, Charlie Condou will be slipping his suspenders back on for two performances on Friday 18th March.

Norman Pace will make his Rocky Horror Show debut in Torquay, and will then perform in Bradford, Edinburgh, Belfast, Dartford, Wolverhampton, Sheffield, Woking, Leicester, Watford, Bristol, Milton Keynes, Canterbury, Glasgow, Southend and Bournemouth.  The unique show also stars Diana Vickers, Ben Freeman and Liam Tamne.

Steve Punt has been half of Punt and Dennis for many years and has co-hosted The Now Show on Radio 4 since its inception in 1998. Steve also presents the university quiz The Third Degree and the light-hearted investigative show Punt PI for Radio 4. Steve’s TV writing and performing credits include Canned Carrott,The Mary Whitehouse Experience, Punt and Dennis, Mock the Week and Horrible Histories. In 2011 Steve played Eric Idle in BBC4’s Holy Flying Circus.

Norman Pace, one half of comedy duo Hale and Pace, has become an accomplished actor in his own right, with guest lead roles in BBC’s Casualty and ITV’s The Last Detective.  He made his West End debut as ‘Amos Hart’ in Chicago in 1999 and has since gone on to perform in the UK tours of Honk, A Slice Of Saturday Night, Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, Satin ‘N’ Steel, Breakfast With Johnny Wilkinson, Donkeys Ears, Our Man In Havana, Dry Rot, Charley’s Aunt, Annie Get Your Gun and most recently One Man Two Guvnors.

Charlie Condou is best known for playing Marcus Dent in Coronation Street for four years and his successful column ‘The Three of Us’ in The Guardian. Charlie’s other television credits include Me, You, and The Apocalypse, The Impressionists and Midsomer Murders. On the silver screen, Charlie has starred in Good,Fred Claus and Charlotte Grey, while some of his theatre roles include Next Fall (Southwark Playhouse),Dying for It (The Almeida), The Changeling (Southwark Playhouse) and Shopping and F***king (UK Tour).

Since its first appearance at the Royal Court Theatre in June 1973, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Showhas become the world’s favourite Rock N’ Roll musical. It has been performed worldwide for over 40 years in over 30 countries, selling out in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and Austria, and has been translated into more than 20 languages. Director Christopher Luscombe created a stunning new production to celebrate the 40th Anniversary, which famously combines science-fiction, horror, comedy and music and encourages audience participation. This critically acclaimed version of the classic show, which tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet – two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank’n’Furter by chance when their car breaks down outside his house – is back by popular demand, embarking on a year-long national adventure starting in Brighton next month.

This musical extravaganza features all of its famous musical classics including “Science Fiction/Double Feature”, “Dammit Janet” and of course, the timeless floor-filler, “The Time-Warp”.

Many stars, including Russell Crowe, Tim Curry, Jerry Springer and Meatloaf have appeared in The Rocky Horror Show over the past four decades. Ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, O’Brien’sRocky Horror Show is the boldest bash of them all. Be warned, this show has rude parts!

Whistleblower – the story of Edward Snowden

Waterloo East Theatre  9 February – 6 March.  Reviewed by Claire Roderick

This play made me worry about my political leanings. By the end I was rooting for the NSA – at least they were funny and had the best lines.

Snowden and the journalists come across as grey and joyless. Snowden’s motivation was ethical and patriotic but here his repeated justifications for his actions become trite and sanctimonious. The jumps between key events following 9/11 and in Snowden’s career influencing his decision to go public are jarring and the whole thing becomes a mishmash of good dialogue lost among a misjudged cacophony of noise and movement that becomes increasingly more irritating. The security briefings amuse at first, with endless mind-numbing acronyms and tubthumping rhetoric, but feel overused (a lovely exception being the GCHQ man with his schoolboy one-upmanship), and the difference between Snowden’s idea of patriotism and his colleagues’ more gung-ho attitude is hit home with a sledgehammer far too many times.

The second act is a little calmer and more coherent (apart from revisiting the worst excesses of act one verbatim to signal where we are in the timeframe – you’ll wish they hadn’t), dealing with the lead up to publication of the leaked material. There are moments of tension and humour but then it all gets a bit meta and sermon like at the end. Thankfully the cast all deal admirably with what they are given and just about carry it off.

This story is relevant, interesting and should be told – just not like this please. I for one was glad when the final whistle was blown.

Dark new comedy double-bill at Theatre N16 this February

Painting Painting presents:

BLACKHANDER/F**KING LITTLE ELF B*TCH
February 21st – 25th 2016, 7.30pm, Theatre N16

New theatre company Painting Painting bring two brutally funny pieces of new writing to Theatre N16 this February: Blackhander and F**king Little Elf B*tch.

In Blackhander, an ageing, racist invalid invites a spiritual leader to absolve her of her sins for an obscene amount of money. Only this is not what’s happening.

“Were you planning on saving me from the searing fires of eternal damnation before lunch, only I’ve got the Jews coming at 3. And I hear they’re pretty persuasive.”

Sermons flow, truth deteriorates and she may be justice incarnate, and she may be properly insane, and retaliation is an inaccurate business… and we may not be the good guys. Blackhander is written and directed by Colum David Demirer.

Inspired by 8 years working in a grotto, F**king Little Elf B*tch follows the adventures of Ivy through the dark realities of the Wonderland. As the truth of her situation dawns on her, Ivy makes it her mission to take the make believe out of Christmas.

“You’re not a real elf. You are just a grown up dressed in a stupid costume. There is nothing magic about you.”

If the idea of a festive themed show in February is your idea of humbug hell then perfect, you are already tapped into the mind-set of this disgruntled oversized Elf. F**king Little Elf B*tch is written by Katherine Newman and directed by Dudley Rees.

The Wardrobe Ensemble’s 1972: The Future of Sex to begin national UK tour in March 2016

THE WARDROBE ENSEMBLE

@WardrobEnsemble / www.thewardrobeensemble.com

  • THE WARDROBE ENSEMBLE’S 1972: THE FUTURE OF SEX TO BEGIN NATIONAL UK TOUR IN MARCH 2016

  • 1972: THE FUTURE OF SEX WILL OPEN UK TOUR AT THE WARDROBE THEATRE, BRISTOL (8 – 26 MARCH) AND WILL PLAY FOR TWO WEEKS AT SHOREDITCH TOWN HALL (12 – 23 APRIL)

Award-winning theatre company The Wardrobe Ensemble will take their production 1972: The Future of Sex on tour across the UK this spring. The production, which won the Stage Award for Acting Excellence in 2015, will begin its UK tour at the Wardrobe Theatre in Bristol where it will play as part of Tobacco Factory Theatres BEYOND from 8 – 26 March. The production will then tour to eight venues across the UK, including a two-week residency at Shoreditch Town Hall.

1972: The Future of Sex is the latest offering from The Wardrobe Ensemble. Devised by the company, the show uses The Wardrobe Ensemble’s trademark inventive theatricality, irreverent humour and spectacular ensemble moments to tell the story of 3 couples having sex for the first time on the night that David Bowie first appeared as Ziggy Stardust on Top of the Pops.

Directors of 1972: The Future of Sex Tom Brennan and Jesse Jones said: We’re thrilled to take 1972: The Future of Sex on the road to some of our favourite venues across the UK and to see it grow and develop in front of lots of different audiences. Originally, we wanted to make a show about sex because it’s something we all have opinions on and experience of. However, once we started rehearsals it became clear that a conversation about shagging is also a conversation about a whole host of other prickly subjects: power, gender, choice, representation, equality, identity and oppression just to name a few. We decided to use the lens of the seventies to examine the topic because as well as being a pivotal moment in sexual history (a seemingly consequence-free era post-the pill and pre-AIDS) it also gave us the distance to comment on sex and sexuality today. It also gave us a really great soundtrack.”

The Wardrobe Ensemble is a group of theatre artists from Bristol working together to make new plays that dissect the twenty-first century experience. Their previous plays include RIOT, 33, Eliza and the Wild Swans, Edgar and the Land of Lost, Eloise and the Curse of the Golden Whiskand The Star Seekers. They have toured nationally and internationally to venues including the National Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre, Bristol Old Vic, Salisbury Playhouse and Jack, Brooklyn. The full cast for the production includes: Tom Crosley-Thorne, Tom England, Emily Greenslade, Kerry Lovell, Jesse Meadows, Helena Middleton, James Newton and Ben Vardy.

1972: The Future of Sex is commissioned by Shoreditch Town Hall. Supported by Arts Council England, Bristol Ferment, the Kevin Spacey Foundation and Tobacco Factory Theatres Artist Development Fund.
