Cast Announced for Seussical The Musical

Cast Announced for Seussical The Musical
Southwark Playhouse (The Large), 77-85 Newington Causeway,
London, SE1 6BD
Thursday 22nd November – Saturday 29th December 2018

This November, Marc Pickering (Boardwalk Empire, HBO; Les Misérables, Universal Pictures; Sleepy Hollow, Paramount Pictures) will star as the mischievous Cat in the Hat in Immersion Theatre͛s larger-than-life musical extravaganza, Seussical the Musical. He is joined by Scott Paige (Eugenius, The Other Palace; The Addams Family, UK/Asia Tour; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, UK Tour/West Yorkshire Playhouse) as the warm-hearted Horton the Elephant and Amy Perry (Bananaman, Southwark Playhouse, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Adelphi Theatre; Sweet Charity, Cadogan Hall) as the humble Gertrude McFuzz in this high-energy production for ͚thinkers͛ of all ages.

Katie Paine (We Will Rock You, Dominion Theatre; Godspell, Lyric Theatre; Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Gatehouse) will play the vivacious Mayzie La Bird alongside Ngozi Ugoh (The Book of Mormon, Prince of Wales Theatre; The Life, English Theatre Frankfurt; Avenue Q, Brookside Theatre) who will play Sour Kangaroo and Anna Barnes (Cats, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre; The Fix, Guilford School of Acting; Bullets Over Broadway, Guilford School of Acting) who plays Jojo, ‘a thinker’ with a wild imagination.

The cast is completed by Daisy Steere (42nd Street, Theatre Royal Drury Lane; Jackie The Musical, UK Tour; Legally Blonde, Aberystwyth Arts Centre), Adam Dawson (Spring Awakening, Hope Mill Theatre; Hair the Musical, The Vaults; West Side Story, Royal Shakespeare Company), Robbie Fell (Song, Pulse Films/BT; Cinderella, Malvern Festival Theatre; The Life, Performance Preparation Academy), Rhys Benjamin (Me and My Girl, The Urdang Academy; Bring It On,
Pleasance Theatre; Is There Life After High School?, The Royal Academy of Music), Marianna Neofitou (Grease, Leicester Curve; Dusty: The Dusty Springfield Musical, Charing Cross Theatre; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, London Palladium) and Sarah Spence (9 to 5 The Musical, Legally Blonde, The Producers – all whilst training at Performance Preparation Academy.

Director James Tobias comments, Finding a cast who are able to bring these fantastical, over the top characters to life whilst retaining their truth, heart and integrity is, in my opinion, one of the key ingredients to the success of a show like this. I could not be more thrilled with the company we have assembled and feel immensely privileged and excited to be working with such exceptional talent, on stage and off, to create an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages this Christmas.

Brimming with fun and excitement for all the family, the fantastical world of Dr. Seuss bursts onto the stage in this feel-good musical bonanza. Set to an electric score and co-conceived by Monty Python͛s Eric Idle, this raucous and ultimately touching story by Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty dares us to think big and reminds us of the power of loyalty, family, and acceptance. After all, a person͛s a person no matter how small!

Far from being only a show just for children, Seussical is filled with larger-than-life characters and an incredible and varied score featuring a range of genres from funk, to big band, to rock and roll, to musical theatre. The much-loved characters all have something which we can all connect with, be it a sense of mischief, insecurity, that feeling of you against the world, and everything in between.

From bullying, to unrequited love, to being insecure with your body, to inclusivity, Seussical touches on some of today͛s most topical issues in a funny and moving way. With choreography from 2018 Off West End award winner Chris Whittaker, this production is an intelligent, hilarious and moving piece of theatre whose themes, plot, characters, and score resonate and entertain audiences of all ages.

KING OF COMEDY BRIAN CONLEY AND FASHIONISTA GOK WAN TO STAR IN CINDERELLA AT THE BRISTOL HIPPODROME!

KING OF COMEDY BRIAN CONLEY AND FASHIONISTA GOK WAN TO STAR IN

CINDERELLA AT THE BRISTOL HIPPODROME!

Strictly sensation, comedian, King of pantomime and musical theatre star Brian Conley and celebrity style guru and television presenter Gok Wan are to star in the Fairy Godmother of all pantomimes – Cinderella at The Bristol Hippodrome.

This spectacular show, supported locally by BAWA Healthcare and Leisure, is at The Bristol Hippodrome from Saturday, December 8, 2018, until Sunday, January 6, 2019.

In a career spanning three decades, Brian Conley has appeared in award-winning West End musicals and television sitcoms, presented his own chat shows, recorded three albums and completed numerous sell-out tours of the UK. Most recently he was a contestant on the 15th series of BBC 1’s Strictly Come Dancing. Coupled with pro-dancer Amy Dowden, Brian was fifth to leave the competition, not before wowing the nation with his endearing dance routines and loveable personality.

On stage, he has starred as Edna Turnblad in the hit West End musical Hairspray and the title role in the UK tour of Barnum, previously at The Bristol Hippodrome.

Brian has completed a nationwide tour of Brother Love, celebrating the music of Neil Diamond, directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, starred in the nationwide tour of Oliver! playing Fagin, played the title role in Jolson, for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award, and had leading roles in Me and My Girl, The Music Man and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He also embarked on his latest UK tour earlier this year, Still the Greatest Entertainer (in his Price Range).

And it has just been announced that Brian will be starring in Country legend Dolly Parton’s rollicking new West End show, 9 To 5 The Musical, alongside pop star and Strictly Come Dancing finalist, Louise Redknapp. The show will run at The Savoy Theatre, London for a strictly limited season from January 28, 2019.

Gok Wan will play The Fairy Gokmother, offering helpful style tips to The Ugly Sisters and creating the most magical ball gown in panto-land for Cinderella!

Cinderella marks Gok’s sixth pantomime appearance, the first of which was the subject of the Channel 4 documentary Gok Does Panto. Cinderella marks Gok and Brian’s fourth pantomime together.

Gok’s TV career started with the overwhelming success of his Channel 4 series, How To Look Good Naked, which proved so successful that a further six series were filmed, as well as three series of Gok’s Fashion Fix. Gok’s other recent TV credits include How To Cook Chinese, Gok’s Style Secrets, Gok Live: Stripping For Summer, Too Fat Too Young and Gok’s Teens: The Naked Truth. Gok is a regular guest presenter on ITV1’s This Morning and hosted ITV1’s Gok’s Lunchbox.

Lauren Hall will star as our beautiful heroine, Cinderella.

Lauren’s extensive theatre work includes Me and My Girl (Chichester Festival Theatre), Oklahoma! (BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall), Mrs Henderson Presents (Royal Alexandra Theatre, Toronto), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Kilworth House) and Singin’ in the Rain (UK tour and Tokyo Theatre Orb, Japan). Lauren has also starred as Francine in Jersey Boys (Prince Edward Theatre), Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street (Chichester Festival Theatre), and Sharpay Evans in High School Musical 2 (UK tour).

This is Lauren’s ninth pantomime as principal girl for Qdos Entertainment.

Ugly Sister Ben Stock will be donning his best dress to perform in his hometown!

Bristol boy Ben is delighted to be in his hometown for his tenth year as an Ugly Sister for Qdos Entertainment. He first appeared at the Hippodrome as a Cub Scout in the 1987 Gang Show singing ‘Tomorrow’ from Annie.

In the West End, Ben has appeared in Grease, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Dame Edna, The Spectacle and Over My Shoulder. On tour, his credits include Lumiere in Disney’s Beauty And The Beast and Noel Coward in Noel And Gertie.

In London, Ben has been seen in Noel And Gertie, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Follow That Girl, while his regional work includes Cornelius in Hello Dolly, Lady Windermere’s Fan, Stepping Out, La Cage Aux Folles and Annie. He was also in The Tale Of Mr Tumble for the Manchester International Festival and Cbeebies.

Ben has two solo cabarets, which have played to sell-out audiences in New York, the Far East and across the UK. He is also a Music Hall regular and adds directing to his list of credentials.

Ben’s fellow Ugly Sister is played by Neal Wright.

Neal’s many theatre credits include Judah in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Adelphi Theatre), Pepper in Mamma Mia! (Prince Edward), Cookson in Peter Pan (Royal Festival Hall), Benny Southstreet in Guys and Dolls (Sheffield Crucible), Wopsole and Wemmick in Great Expectations (Unicorn Theatre) and Yo-Less in Only You Can Save Mankind (Soho Laundry).

His television credits include appearing as CeeLo Green in Harry Hill’s Tea Time (CPL Productions/Sky), Dan The Van Man in Nuzzle and Scratch (BBC), and Mr Make It (The Foundation).

Neal has performed in many pantomimes over the years, in roles including Genie in Aladdin, Smee in Peter Pan, Gusty Gail in Cinderella, Dame Dottie Trot in Jack and the Beanstalk, Widow Twankey in Aladdin and Buttons in Cinderella.

Ben and Neal recently won the Great British Pantomime Award 2018 for their portrayal of the Ugly Sisters in Cinderella at Milton Keynes.

Bristol audiences shall go to the ball this Christmas as Cinderella transforms from rags to riches, outwits her very Ugly Sisters, and with the help of her hilarious friend Buttons and one very magical Fairy Godmother, wins the heart of the dashing Prince Charming.

Cinderella will feature all the ingredients of the perfect pantomime; a fabulous cast and orchestra, laugh-out-loud comedy, stunning scenery and special effects, beautiful costumes and plenty of boos and hisses for all the family to enjoy.

Cinderella will once again be produced by Qdos Entertainment, the world’s biggest pantomime producer continuing their partnership with Hippodrome operators, ATG.

Michael Harrison, managing director of Qdos Entertainment’s pantomime division said: “We are absolutely delighted to be back in Bristol this Christmas and thrilled that Brian and Gok will be leading the cast. Brian has won legions of new fans following his short-lived success on Strictly, and is the ultimate showman, and Gok is an absolute natural at pantomime, and both have a fantastic chemistry which delights audiences every festive season. Audiences will be in for a treat as they bring comedy, stunning vocals, fashion tips and plenty of surprises to the production packed full of music, dance, laughter and audience participation.”

Jenny Hutchinson, Theatre Director said. ”Having Brian and Gok starring in Cinderella this year will delight Bristol audiences. Off the back of a great run last year with Aladdin, with many customers saying it was the best panto they’d ever seen, I’m thrilled QDOS Entertainment have raised the bar even higher! Many of our customers have already booked their tickets in order not to miss out and therefore we would urge anyone else to book sooner rather than later as Christmas will soon be upon us!”

An international tour visited Amsterdam, Toronto, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney and Perth from 2017 – 18. A schools tour, taking a specially staged in-the-round 90 minute version of the play into 60 schools around the country runs until December.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at the Piccadilly Theatre is a co-production with the Ambassador Theatre Group.

Simon Stephens said: “I am stunned and inspired by the return of Curious Incident to the West End. It is a story that means the world to me. Mark Haddon’s exquisite imagination twisted into shape and infused with life by Marianne Elliott and her incredible team. After travelling the country and seeing the world Christopher Boone is coming back home. I’m mainly thrilled because I get to see it again.”

Lisa Burger, National Theatre Executive Director said: “We always felt that there were many more performances of Curious Incident in the West End left to give, and many more audiences who were yet to connect with Christopher Boone and his extraordinary story. We’re absolutely thrilled to be joining with ATG to bring Curious Incident – with its stellar creative team – back to the West End and we can’t wait to share this beautiful and inventive show with a new generation of audiences.”

The show tells the story of Christopher John Francis Boone, who is fifteen years old. He stands besides Mrs Shears’ dead dog, which has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in a book he is writing to solve the mystery of who killed Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain, and is exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

The production is designed by Bunny Christie, with lighting designer Paule Constable, and video design by Finn Ross.  Movement is by Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett for Frantic Assembly, music by Adrian Sutton and sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph.

New production of Under Milk Wood opening in November

UNDER MILK WOOD
Written by Dylan Thomas
2 – 17 November at Northern Stage

Tickets from £10

Originally written as a BBC radio drama by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, Under Milk Wood gets a contemporary, technological twist under the direction of The War of the Worlds director Elayce Ismail.

An enfolding, haunting and at times unsettling experience, this ‘play for voices’ offers a glimpse of a golden era that may never have existed. It follows 24 hours in the lives of a collection of characters who inhabit the fictional town of Llareggub, and was made into a film starring Richard Burton with Elizabeth Taylor and Peter O’Toole.

Director Elayce Ismail is currently Associate Director at Northern Stage as part of a pilot scheme by the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme (RTYDS) aimed at preparing directors with a strong professional track record for artistic leadership. Elayce has directed theatre and opera for companies including the
National Theatre, Royal Opera House, Young Vic, Gate, Soho Theatre, Royal Court, The Yard and Deutsches Theater Berlin.

Elayce explains, “The fabric of the play allows you to get a glimpse of people’s secret stories – their desires, dreams, and disappointments – whilst conjuring a natural world that is rich, sensual and evocative. For me, the beauty of Thomas’ text lies in the surprising rhythms, tones and textures of his words: he delights in
language, and through it creates characters that are surreal and yet reveal so much about human nature. In this new production, we’re creating a dream-like space that invites you to listen: immersing the audience in a playful soundscape, beautiful layered visuals and imaginative storytelling.”

Taking on multiple roles including Captain Cat, the old blind sea captain who dreams of his drowned shipmates; Myfanwy Price, the sweetshop-keeper lusting after Mog Edwards; Organ Morgan, obsessed with his music; postman Willy Nilly who reads his neighbours’ letters; and Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard, relentlessly nagging her two dead husbands, the cast are Christina Berriman Dawson (Key Change, Open Clasp) and David Kirkbride (Pinocchio, National Theatre).

Alongside Director Elayce Ismail, the creative team includes award-winning set and costume designer Jen McGinley – Jen has recently worked on The Reluctant Fundamentalist (Prasanna Puwanarajah, National Youth Theatre) and The Secret Life of Humans (David Byrne, New Diorama Theatre); lighting designer, Andy
Purves – a regular with Frantic Assembly and The National Theatre of Scotland; sound designer Richard Hammarton whose work includes the Olivier Award-winning production The Mountaintop and the Ivor Novello award-winning Ripper Street for BBC Television; and film maker Kris Deedigan who worked with Northern Stage’s Young company to create visuals for David Almond’s A Song for Ella Grey

Tickets start at £10; for more details or to book tickets see northernstage.co.uk or call the box office on 0191 230 5151.
