Girls Own Adventure: Woman in Crime Fiction Review

York Theatre Royal – 23 March 2017.  Reviewed by Marcus Richardson

‘Girls Own Adventure: Woman in Crime Fiction’ was a book talk as part of the York Literature Festival happening in 2017, held at the York Theatre Royal.

The talk delves into the portrayal of women in crime fiction books. With the panel of 3 women and 1 man, all of which are authors of crime fiction books themselves, they delved into their own novels and looked at popular crime stories such as Poirot.

A lot of topics were discussed during the talk and all were mainly focused around women in books, with the 3 females having protagonists who are also female, they gave us an insight into how their characters deal with issues both in novel and critical issues, with most female protagonists being overall disliked in the book community. The male writer had a female protagonist in one of his books and he talks about the issue he faced as an author about writing from a female point of view, and how he overcame the problem he faced.

The panel took in questions from the audience that ranged from their methods and creation of places that were made up to if they use a political agenda in their novels to big women up. With the focus of women in power and independent women you could tell that this was very current and new age, the panel handled the questions rather well as all the authors had their own views on topics and there was exploration between the topics.

The York Literature Festival will be running until the 30th of March where they will have more events across the city of York.
