Happily Ever Poofter Invites You To A Royal Ball At London’s Kings Head Theatre

HAVE A ROYAL BALL WITH HANDSOME PRINCE HENRY

HAPPILY EVER POOFTER COMES TO THE KING’S HEAD THEATRE AHEAD OF AN INTERNATIONAL TOUR

Audiences will be transported to a land far far a-gay when Edinburgh smash hit Happily Ever Poofter opens at London’s leading fringe theatre this season.

The hottest – and naughtiest – musical parody around, which stars actor and writer Rich Watkins, will make its debut at the King’s Head Theatre from 21 January to 8 February.

And producers are promising that the show will be bigger, bolder and braver than ever.

Follow Prince Henry, the only gay in the Kingdom Far Far Away, on his royal adventure to find true love… because if Disney won’t do a gay love story, we’ll just have to do it ourselves!

The show features re-imagined Disney classics such as High Ho, O, I’ve Just Come Out to The King and Let It Show.

And the London run will coincide with the start of LGBT history month 2020, celebrating the past, present and future of queer culture.

Happily Ever Poofter enchanted audiences and critics alike when it premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019, with one five-star review saying “this very clever inter-woven fairytale for adults touches all the emotions” and another critic praising its “clever jokes and also some unexpectedly serious twists and turns”.

The residence at the Kings’ Head Theatre will be followed by an international tour which will see the production travel Down Under to play at the Adelaide Fringe and in Sydney during February, followed by the Prague Fringe in May before a victorious return to Edinburgh this summer.

Actor and activist Rich Watkins is no stranger to the London queer theatre community, having work extensively at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Above The Stag, The King’s Head and with TwoBox Productions, Dragonflies Arts and LAMBCO Productions.

Happily Ever After marks his debut as a writer.

When not on stage, he is an advocate for HIV awareness and was recently featured in BBC documentary That Moment When, speaking openly about living happily and healthily with HIV. Happily Ever Poofter is sponsored by Wandsworth Oasis, a South London HIV charity.

Award-winning creative Denholm Spurr directs the show. He has been featured in Attitude, Gay Times, BuzzFeed, Jack The Lad and Vice Magazines talking about his career and LGBT community advocacy.

His recent directorial credits include Positive (Theatre Royal Stratford East), MERCY KILLING Mercy Killing (Stockwell Playhouse), and Under The Blue Sky (Drayton Arms). As an actor he is best known for playing the lead in the hit series The Grass is Always Grindr (London Live / YouTube), has been nominated twice for an Off West End Award and was named one of the Top 12 Leading Men of the Year in London. He has also served as a judge on the Olivier Awards.

Dancer, choreographer and movement director Simone Murphy has worked both on and off West End, on UK Tours and internationally. Notable dance work includes Cool Rider Live (Duchess Theatre) and as assistant choreographer to Lizzi Gee on Around the World in 80 Days (St James’ Theatre). She choreographed The Wizard of Oz (Fisher Theatre), while Happily Ever Poofter will be her first London show as choreographer.

Rich Watkins says: “I’m really thrilled Happily Ever Poofter has had such a great reception so far, and I can’t wait to take the show to the King’s Head.

“I’ve always loved stories about magical kingdoms and the idea of a happily-ever-after, but as I got older, I realised most of them were traditional boy-meets-girl tales. That’s why I decided I’d write my own fairytale and tell the story of a gay prince who is on a quest to find his one true love. It feels incredibly fitting that I will be performing Happily Ever Poofter during LGBT History Month, and I look forward to sharing this story of pride and acceptance with audiences.”

Denholm Spurr adds: “Rich’s brilliantly structured script has been a director’s dream-come-true. I’ve focused on the emotional journey and overarching message of the piece, ensuring that the pantomime tropes lull the audience into a false sense of security. It may have all the comedic moments you’d expect in a pantomime, but as audiences at Edinburgh discovered, this is much more than just a flamboyant and whimsical fairytale.”

Pinafore or “The Lass That Loved a Sailor” sails into 5 ports throughout the spring and summer with more dates likely to be announced. The award-winning team that brought the all-male The Pirates of Penzance to Wilton’s Music Hall take you below deck in a re-imagining of Gilbert and Sullivan’s fourth collaboration and first internationally acclaimed comic opera: H.M.S. Pinafore.  Sasha Regan’s production is set on a World War II ship where troops set out a distraction from the goings on above board. The captain’s daughter has fallen for a lower-class sailor.…but what lies in store for the lass and her hearty seafarer?

With infectious tunes and a beautifully constructed libretto, this wonderful comic opera deals with conventionality and the age-old conundrum of love between social classes.  Plenty of surprises and romantic capers on the high seas!

Joyful, witty and fun for all the family!

Sasha Regan’s all-male H.M.S. Pinafore will run at Wilton’s Music Hall from 15th April until 9th May 2020.  The production will then tour to The Theatre Royal Bath 12-16 May; Theatre Royal Winchester 1-6 June; The Cambridge Arts Theatre 8-13 June; and Exeter Northcott Theatre 22-24 June.

Darlington Hippodrome Press Release: Young Darlington musicians to compose and perform own piece of music with world class orchestra

YOUNG DARLINGTON MUSICIANS TO COMPOSE AND PERFORM OWN PIECE OF MUSIC WITH WORLD CLASS ORCHESTRA

As part of the Darlington Concert Series co-produced by Orchestras Live and Darlington Hippodrome, a creative project is being held for young musicians from local Secondary schools who will compose their own piece of music to perform with the Hallé Orchestra at Darlington Hippodrome.

In workshops led by experienced Hallé musicians and Orchestras Live/Spitalfields new trainee music leader Alice Phelps, a short 5 minute piece is being devised that combines the participants and Halle musicians as an ensemble.

Hallé musicians and Alice are working with young guitar players at Haughton School in Education Village and Longfield Academy to explore the themes, structure and musical ideas of the Rodrigo Guitar Concerto.

A final workshop will take place on Tuesday 7th January at Longfield Academy in Darlington before rehearsals in the Hippodrome on Thursday 9th January culminating in the new piece opening the Halle’s concert at Darlington Hippodrome that evening, performed by the young musicians alongside those from the Hallé and soloist Craig Ogden. The young people will be given free tickets to attend the rest of the concert, so they have the opportunity to experience the full orchestra perform and hear the music used as the inspiration for the project performed live by international guitarist Craig Ogden.

NATALIE INSIDE OUT at the Ustinov Studio

Ustinov Studio hosts unique fusion of circus skills and digital art

NATALIE INSIDE OUT: Ustinov Studio, Tuesday 14 & Wednesday 15 January 2020

In the New Year, the Ustinov Studio plays host to a compelling and truly unique performance – NATALIE INSIDE OUT, a collaboration between world-class hand- balancer Natalie Reckert and digital artist Mark Morreau.

Playful, beautiful and highly skilled, NATALIE INSIDE OUT uses technology and video projection to turn conventional ideas of circus upside down and inside out, literally!

Fusing circus and interactive technologies, Natalie and Mark playfully investigate the relationship between the actual and the digitally represented body. Through a blend of live acrobatic performance, extreme close-up slow-motion video, and spoken word, they take movement on stage and transform it into projections on screen.

Natalie Reckert is a circus-maker integrating robotic movement, spoken word and hand-balancing. Since 2007 she has been using her skills to create full length shows. Following 15 years as a professional trapeze artist, Mark Morreau has become an established film-maker and photographer. They have worked together for more than ten years, drawn together by a shared desire to investigate the inner workings of the body of a circus performer. NATALIE INSIDE OUT has been developed over the last three years, in partnership with Jacksons Lane – North London’s flagship venue for contemporary circus.

Jekyll / Hyde
The Vaults, Waterloo
Wednesday 12th February – Sunday 22nd March 2020

Can you get away with murder?

Fire Hazard Games launches an exciting, new urban game for adults, based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Gothic masterpiece, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Exploring schisms of identity, the unreliability of memory, moral conflict, terrible ambition, and unbridled hedonism, Jekyll / Hyde confronts players, asking what they would do if they could get away with murder.

Waking up to the aftermath of Mr Hyde, players are plunged into a thrilling world of investigation and moral ambiguity as their twisted deeds from the night before are revealed. Taking on the role of Dr Jekyll, they must retrace their steps to uncover their hidden past and make decisions about their future, all while under increasing time pressure.
