This production recently ran for an extended season in the West End following a sell-out tour of the UK and Ireland in 2015/16 as well as a recent sell-out season in Toronto.

As Angie Watts in EastEnders, Anita Dobson created one of the most popular characters in television winning numerous awards. Her West End theatre credits include ‘Madame Morrible’ in “Wicked”, ‘Mama Morton’ in “Chicago”, ‘Mrs Meers’ in “Thoroughly Modern Mille”, ‘Chris’ in “Calendar Girls”, ‘Joan Crawford’ in “Bette and Joan” and ‘Nancy’ in “Frozen” at the National Theatre for which she was nominated for an Olivier, Evening Standard and London Critics Award. Her film credits include “London Road”.

Craig Revel Horwood is probably best known as a judge on all 16 series of BBC1’s “Strictly Come Dancing”. He returns to the part of ‘Miss Hannigan’ having played the role to critical acclaim in this production in both the West End and on the 2015/16 UK tour. His other West End Theatre credits include ‘Munkustrap’ in “Cats”, “Miss Saigon” at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and ‘Harry’ in “Crazy for You” at the Prince Edward Theatre. Craig directed and choreographed the recent tour of “Sister Act The Musical” as well as the “Strictly Come Dancing Live” tour for the past six years. He also choreographed the film “Paddington 2”.

Set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression, brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery and torment at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage. Determined to find her real parents, her luck changes when she is chosen to spend Christmas at the residence of famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. Spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search…

With its award-winning book and score, this stunning new production includes the unforgettable songs ‘It’s the Hard Knock Life’, ‘Easy Street’, ‘I Don’t Need Anything But You’ and ‘Tomorrow’.

“ANNIE” has Music by Charles Strouse, Lyrics by Martin Charnin and a Book by Thomas Meehan. “ANNIE” is directed by Nikolai Foster with set and costume design by Colin Richmond, choreography by Nick Winston, lighting by Ben Cracknell and sound design by Richard Brooker. “ANNIE” is produced by Michael Harrison and David Ian.

London Theatre To Dedicate New Play Exploring 1988 Student Uprising in Burma To Two Imprisoned Reuters Journalists in Yangon

Guy Slater in association with Tara Arts presents the World Premiere staging of

Eastern Star

By Guy Slater

London Theatre Dedicates Play about Freedom of Expression in Myanmar to the two Imprisoned Reuters Journalists arrestedwhile investigating violence against the Rohingya minority

11th – 29th September 2018 | Tara Theatre

Tara Theatre in London has dedicated a three-week run of Eastern Star, a play about freedom of expression in Myanmar to the two Reuters journalists, U Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, given seven-year prison sentences in Yangon, for ‘violating a state secrets act’. This news comes shortly after the 30th anniversary of the 1988 student uprising against the military dictatorship in Burma (now Myanmar) on 8th August.

Jatinder Verma, Artistic Director of Tara Arts said

“When we planned this run, we had no idea that Eastern Star would become so painfully current. The sentences handed down to these two men are truly shocking even by the standards of justice we have come to expect in Myanmar today. We urge for them to be released immediately.”

A petition book, calling on the authorities in Myanmar to release U Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo will be available for theatre goers and members of the public to sign. At the end of the three-week run, which begins on 11 September Jatinder Verma will present the petition to the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Eastern Star is based on the true story of the relationship between a BBC World Service journalist, Christopher Gunness and a Burmese human rights lawyer, U Nay Min, with the latter acting as the ‘architect’ of the revolution, and the former serving as its ‘voice’.

After the revolution was brutally suppressed Chris went on to comparative fame and fortune (he is currently director of communications with UN in the Middle East) while U Nay Min was arrested, imprisoned for 16 years and tortured. Set around their fraught and painful reunion 25 years after the revolution, Eastern Star examines the responsibility of global news corporations towards their sources. The piece shines a light on what happens when a foreign journalist walks away from the subject of their story, and addresses the tension between the journalist and the activist in a dictatorial society.

Jatinder Verma adds:

“I call on all people of conscience to raise their voices in support of U Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo. They are guilty of nothing but the crime of writing. Their sentences should not be allowed to stand.”

Eastern Star is written and directed by Guy Slater, who was struck by Chris’ story after hearing him speak at a fund-raising event, and with his permission set about adapting this fascinating story for the stage. The production stars David Yip (The Chinese Detective), Michael Lumsden (The Archers)Julie Cheung-Inhin and Patrick Pearson.

Guy Slater said:

“Christopher and U May Min’s story is a moving and resonant one. I am delighted to be bringing it to the stage for the 30th anniversary of the 1988 student uprising. People rarely stop to think about the relationship between a reporter and his/her subject. Its been a challenge and a delight to look at the story from both – very complex and painful- perspectives.”

Christopher Gunness said:

“It’s surreal to have started a revolution by mistake without even realising it, but as a cub reporter at the BBC that’s just what I did. I never imagined that my reporting would play a part in shaping the fate of a nation and writing the first draft of its history. And with the Rohingya crisis deepening, that history is still being written. The true hero of this story is U Nay Min, and I am delighted that this story is being brought to the stage on this momentous anniversary.”

Kneehigh’s Mike Shepherd adapts Julia Donaldson’s ZOG for the stage at Rose Theatre Kingston

Freckle Productions and Rose Theatre Kingston present

From the book by Julia Donaldson with illustrations by Axel Scheffler

World premiere stage adaptation

prior to a UK Tour

Adapted and directed by
Kneehigh founder and Artistic Director Mike Shepherd

Freckle Productions and Rose Theatre Kingston are delighted to announce the world premiere stage adaptation of Zog, based on the book by Julia Donaldson with illustrations by Axel Scheffler, premiering at Rose Theatre Kingston from Thursday 14 to Saturday 23 February 2019 prior to a UK Tour.

Large in size, and keen in nature, Zog is so eager to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school, where dragons learn all the things that dragons need to know.  Zog tries so very hard, perhaps too hard, and he bumps, burns and roars his way through years one, two and three. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet…a duel with a knight, Sir Gadabout the Great! Zog promises to be roaring fun for all ages.

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved Zog is adapted and directed by Mike Shepherd (founder and Artistic Director of Kneehigh) with an original folk score by Johnny Flynn (award-winning actor and singer-songwriter with The Sussex Wit) played live on stage. It is designed by Katie Sykes (Jane Eyre at the National Theatre).

Zog is produced by Freckle Productions and Rose Theatre Kingston. Freckle Productions’ most recent show is Tabby McTat, an adaptation of the book by Julia Donaldson, following their acclaimed productions of Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales and Stick Man. Rose Theatre Kingston’s other forthcoming family productions include a brand-new staging of The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss featuring original new songs, and for Christmas a magical new adaptation of Hansel & Gretel.

Julia Donaldson said today: “I’m tremendously excited that Zog will be taking flight around the UK in this first ever stage production. Going to the theatre can be a truly magical experience, I know it will be such a thrill to see the world of Zog being brought to life on stage.”

Jay Green and Jen Sutherland of Freckle Productions said: “Freckle has a proud and longstanding association with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler having adapted many of their wonderful books. We are delighted to now be partnering with Rose Theatre Kingston to bring Zog to the stage, in what will be a hugely exciting and imaginative adaptation by Mike Shepherd, with thrilling original music by Johnny Flynn.”

Jerry Gunn of Rose Theatre Kingston said: “Rose Theatre Kingston are thrilled to be welcoming Zog the dragon and his classmates to the stage for the very first time. Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s wonderful creations have long been delighting children here in Kingston and across the country. We’ll have fire extinguishers at the ready for an adventure that promises to delight young children and their families alike.”

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler are the UK’s number one picture book pair and are creators of many modern classics, including The Gruffalo which is in 75 languages.

Zog was first published in 2010 and won the Galaxy National Children’s Book of the Year Award. Ithas gone on to become a perennial bestseller. For Christmas 2018, Magic Light Pictures will premiere an animated film of Zog on BBC One featuring an all-star cast, following their award-winning films such as The GruffaloRoom on the Broom and Stick Man.

Suitable for children and families of all ages. Casting and further tour dates to be announced.

Fame the Musical Review

The Hexagon. Reading – until 8th September 2018

The class of ’84 at PA school in New York City bring us Fame the Musical, celebrating its 30th anniversary. Taking you right back to the 80’s, to the iconic movie that those of us in a certain age bracket remember fondly. Like the movie it is loud, full of high energy routines, plenty of hormones flying about and just a few leg warmers. With an artsy backdrop of year books and yellow cabs randomly driving up the wall.

PA or Fame school in the 80’s was the springboard of so many hopefuls with dreams and aspirations to be a star, fame being the longed for prize. Today they do X Factor and similar shows I guess. As with so many shows there is a lot going on, we only get a glimpse into the characters struggles and dreams, although it seems pushy parents, drugs, sexuality are all touched on.

Iris (Jorgie Porter from Hollyoaks) has a great chemistry and fluidity almost nymph like when dancing with Tyrone (Jamal Kane Crawford). Tyrone is without doubt the male dance star of the show his routines are superb.

The story touches on some serious issues like Tyrones dyslexia which is picked up by the formidable Miss Sherman (Mica Paris). She pushes him to his limit and she gets through to him in the end, like so many he needed someone to believe him and she did, their relationship is sound. Her pupils are the children she didn’t have and her rendition of These are my children is simply stunning, what a voice!

The other stunning voice is that of Carmen (Stephanie Rojas) so desperate to be famous and to see her name in lights she quits school and her budding romance with Schlomo (Simon Anthony) and heads off to LA having been lured by a would be agent, everyone tries to talk her out of going, she ignores them all and heads off. We see her again in a dishevelled state on the night the others all head off for their big night. Carmen delivers some big tunes including the title song Fame and I’m a survivor, sadly she wasn’t.

There are some fab dance routines in this show along with superb dancers three caught my eye Mabel (Hayley Johnson) she’s funny too with her see food diet, it was her dancing and voice that I really noticed. Two of the male ensemble Morgan Jackson and Ryan Kayode are really good, worth looking out for.

There are some really funny lines in this not least the ones delivered by Joe (Albey Brookes) he is suggestive, cheeky and slightly inappropriate but overall he is funny.

Its high energy carries the show through to it’s fabulous finale which has Mica Paris and Stephanie Rojas singing Fame, 2 powerful ladies belting out an iconic classic.

It’s an 80’s classic show that was thrilling an audience of youngsters whose parents watched the movie .

Madagascar the Musical Review

REVIEW: Madagascar The Musical (Sunderland Empire) ★★★★

September 3, 2018

For: West End Wilma

https://www.westendwilma.com/review-madagascar-the-musical-sunderland-empire/

It’s not every show where a monkey warns you not to take photos or else it will throw poo at you. But it made the many children in the audience laugh and laid the tone for the rest of the show.

Based on the Dreamworks film of the same name, Selladoor’s production of Madagascar tells the story of Marty the Zebra becoming disillusioned with his life in Central Park zoo, so escapes to see the outside world. Worried for his safety, his friends Alex the Lion, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo follow him, but are captured and sent to a Kenyan nature reserve. After the boat they are travelling on is seized by penguins and crashes, they become stranded on the strange and madcap island of Madagascar where they meet King Julien the 13th and his tribe of Lemurs.

Antoine Murray-Straughan plays Marty, streetwise and sassy. X Factor winner Matt Terry is Alex, the Lion who loves to show off but needs steak because he is starving. Jamie-Lee Morgan’s hypochondriac Melman proves his worth as a puppeteer as he swings around his long giraffe neck, while Timmika Ramsay brings more sass to Gloria’s caring nature. But it is Jo Parsons‘ King Julien who steals the show in the second act, playing the party-loving Lemur monarch.

The costumes were brilliant and the set design, bright and enchanting. The use of puppetry for the penguins, monkey and lemurs contributed to the comic mood and magic of the evening.

Whilst the majority of the songs are less than memorable, ‘Move It’ had the theatre clapping and sing along.

At only 100 minutes long, it is a short story but it’s probably long enough for its target of audience of younger children. But this is a night of simple fun and a great introduction to live theatre for the next generation.

Kinky Boots Angels a Hit at Manchester Pride

Last weekend, Kinky Boots Angels George Grayson and Joshua Lovell from the smash hit musical Kinky Boots joined Manchester’s Pride celebrations, adding even more glitter and glam to Saturday’s Parade.

Starting on Deansgate near the iconic Beetham Tower, the Angels joined the line-dancers, jugglers and circus acts all taking part in this year’s ‘Circus of Acceptance’ themed parade. And accepted they were! High-kicking their way through the city to meet the thousands of revellers enjoying the Parade, the Kinky Boots cast members were greeted with screams of delight from fans already aware of the musical, and those desperate to see it during its Manchester run this November.

With the mantra ‘Just be who you wanna be’, Kinky Boots was the perfect musical to be showcased at this year’s Pride. The show tells the story of Charlie Price, who is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Son. With the shoe factory’s future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola – a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos.

With songs by Grammy® and Tony® winning pop icon Cyndi LauperKinky Boots takes audiences from the factory floor to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Cast includes Callum Francis, who returns to play Lola following his award-winning, critically-acclaimed performances in Australia, alongside Paula Lane as Lauren, best known for her role as Kylie Platt in Coronation Street. West End star Joel Harper-Jackson completes the trio, as Charlie Price.

The hit musical struts in Manchester’s Opera House from Monday 12th November – Saturday 1st December. For more information, or to book, visit atgtickets.com/Manchester.
